This afternoon I was at a friend's house and we installed CCleaner. After installing it, we went through the startup list and removed alot of stuff, and unfortunately removed two entries...one referencing DLA and the mentioned DVD.Now trying to access the DVD and CD-RW drives and it acts like a disk is not inserted. Went into Device Manager and both listed correctly with no problems. Made several attempts to uninstall them and reinstall them but still no luck.
when I open explorer there's no more CD or DVD drives shown anymore (and I've got one CD burner and one DVD ROM internally and one DVD Burner externally). This means I can't watch any more DVDs on my PC or burn any more discs.
A Dell Dimensions 2400 with Pentium 4, 256MB memory and a 80GB hard drive. He is running windows xp home edition. We opened up the tower to clean out all the dust using air cans. We were very careful not to touch any wiring or connections to the CD roms or hard drive. We were ready to install 256MB chip more of memory to make it 512MB. However he purchased the wrong chip so we did not install it. I did remove the memory stick it had to show him what to purchase. I then made sure we reinstalled it back properly and tightly. We also installed tune up 2006 and Norton system works to clean out his system. I had tested the cd roms and they seemed to be working. Then my nephew tried to install his I-pod software and the program did not open itself. He then went to my computer to open the software manually and realized that the d:/drive and the e:/drives were not showing. I tried updating the drivers with no luck. My next step was to delete the cd rom's in device manager and reboot the sysytem. The system recognized the hardware and installed the drivers but the cd roms still do not appear in My Computer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW I also tried to do a system restore to an earlier date but windows xp could not restore to an earlier date.
I have several workstations that can access the internet and xbox and ps3 just fine. but for some reason my main pc can no longer access any website page, but can still browse the LAN and get to the routers homepage, and i can get my dchp from router so we know this is not a physical layer one issue with the nic card or network cable, it seems like its just a http port 80 issue? any suggestions maybe reset my IP stack?I have moved my question to the "Networking section" can you please remove
Our domain is having problems all of a sudden. Windows Installer for MS Office 2000 is trying to install something but the installer has gets access denied at the share where originally installed from. No changes to the system have been made except leaving on auto-updates on our XP machines. Users can freely access the share, yet Windows Installer gets access denied. What gives? Has there been a recent update to Windows Installer that is causing grief on Server 2003 + XP domains. Have not installed 2003 Server SP1 patch yet even.
Fresh install of windows XP.My computer has decided that connected usb drives do not exist.I can access them from Disk management. if I assign it a drive letter manually. But that is kind of hit or miss.This includes thumb drives and card readers.Other usb devices work fine.
I was hit by a virus and now I can't access my hard drives from My Computer. I get a message "Windows Script Host" and "cannot find script file, "C:autorun.vbs" when I click on my "C" icon. Right clicking gives me gibberish in the menu box where the "Open" should be. I can still get through to the contents via My Documents and up-leveling.
I recently upgraded my operating system to 'Windows XP Professional' and I am happy with the outcome, with one exception.Since upgrading I am unable to easily access the 'my computer' facility.The symptoms are as follows. I double click the 'my computer' icon and the window opens, however, no drive details appear and I see the 'waggling torch' symbol which indicates that the computer is looking for the drives. Unfortunately this continues for some time ( often up to 5 minutes, and sometimes it will not find the drives at all
A week or so ago I preformed a repair installation of Windows XP Professional SP2 (retail) after basic Windows features (such as WMP10 and Search) became corrupted. The repair worked without a hitch, except for the fact that I've been denied access to my optical drives. All administrative accounts can access the drives without a problem, but limited and guest accounts can not. It doesn't matter if it's a music CD, data DVD burned on the limited user's account, or no disk is even inserted...each time I receive the ''Access denied'' error. All other removable storage (flash drives, card reader, etc) are accessable on all accounts. I've tried restarting my computer, booting in Safe Mode, checking permissions (found nothing relevant), scanning for malware (sparkling clean), and even performing another repair installation. The drives are new (about 6 months old), fully functional, cables are firmly connected, all of the latest drivers are installed, and nothing (to my knowledge) has changed prior to or since the repair installation. I checked the Microsoft database, but only found registry edits for NT 4.0...Windows XP wasn't mentioned as having this issue.Is there a permission I have missed, registry edit, etc that might give my limited user accounts access to the LiteOn DL DVD+/-RW and Sony DVD-ROM drives again? Suggestions are appreciated, but solutions are preferable.
i have three hard drives : 1 Hitachi 250 GB Sata 2 on Nvidia Controller 2 Samsung 80 GB Sata in RAID O on Silicon Controller 1. the problem is when i boot into windows the LAN connection (two small monitors in the taskbar) takes atleast 10 minutes to show !! and theother problem is that until tht two monitors dnt appear i dnt get any reply frm right clicking any of the drives to see their properties and frm My Computer too, but as soon as the two small monitors come all the properties just pop up.
2. Sometimes suddenly in between Windows shows Write Delayed Failed Error only on the Raid Drives and i cnt access them afterwards,restarting solves the problem tho but jst for sumtime.
Everytime I boot I get an "Administrator has prohibited access to CD/DVD DRIVES and removable storage devices" All of my USB ports and my CD are greyed out with a red circle and bar symbol. I am running XP Pro with SP3. I am the only user of this computer and I did not restrict them. I have gone in with the secret administrator account and it is also locked.
I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers.It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".
I recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem. - I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery. - I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install. - I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help. - I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters. - i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios. I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.
My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. Uninstalled with Revo Uninstaller
I am using Windows XP Professional SP2 on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe MB. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.
I work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?
This is not a hardware problem as it just seems to have happened to both my home and work pc's. The exact same issue, the F5 key no longer "refreshes". The only thing I can think of that has been installed recently on both PC's is XP SP3.
I am working on Windows XP Pro and just noticed that RUN is no longer under PROGRAMS. I have looked everywhere but it has just disappeared. I need to load an update and the only way I can do it is to type something in RUN.
i had been helped over in the security forum with some issues with my PC which have now been resolved thanks to Cybertech. Had asked him if he had any idea which OS would be better for my PC.My ISP which is AT&T no longer supports my OS which is 98SE.Without upgrading to another OS I cannot get any updates for the spyware or others they offer.We only have one PC presently and think that may be all we will have.We surf the net, the kids come over and play some games but that is really it nothing too intense.
I used Mozilla as my browser until I upgraded to Windows xp a few days ago. I can no longer use Mozilla because all the icons are gone and there are strange, overlapping words for what used to be the menu bar. When I click on one, such as "bookmarks," I get nothing but a solid black box open on my screen. I am okay with using Internet Explorer, but I would like to be able to import my bookmarks from Mozilla.
when I try to end them it takes an inordinately long time. Like two or more minutes. I bring up Task Manager, highlight the "not running " program and click "end task" which brings up another box that says "end program". But when I click this box nothing happens for at least a couple of minutes, quite often longer. I can repeat this process over and over and it makes no difference.
Before my daughter's Dell 8300 with XP Profesional HD crashed it started with up with WINDOWS XP Propfessional while it loads. I replaced the HD and reinstalled XP Pro with service pack 1 from the original CD supplied by Dell. So far so good. I went through all the updates, downloaded and installed service pack 2 for Pro. Now when XP loads it no longer displays "Professional" It displays as if its XP Home. In other words, Windows XP with out the Professional banner. When I check system info it states XP Professional is installed.
I changed the computer which is running Windows 2000 server from a domain to a work group and then rebooted. When it came back up The password to get into windows was no longer recognized.Can I reinstall windows 2000 without losing files and still get back into windows?I have already done the F8 thing, It seems to be booting fine. It's just when you get to the login screen it won't accept the password.
I am running a computer with Windows XP SP2. When I put a card in my card reader it used to automatically open the picture download wizard. When I put in a DVD it automatically opened Power DVD. When I plugged in my MP3 player it automatically opened its associated software. Now, nothing seems to auto start.
since i got XP, my microphone no longer works. It says that it doesn't detect it and that I should plug it in but I'm 100% sure its plugged in, Ive checked. For some info that may help u, I dont have a headset mic. Just one that sits on your desktop. Its definatly plugged in, I have SP2 for XP Pro.I previously had Windos ME where my mic worked fine. Ive tried doing the audio tuning wizard, but it still says I dont have a mic plugged in and it doesn't detect it.
I'm not sure exactly what brought this on since this is a nearly fresh install of windows, but I have had a problem accessing any web content with internet explorer except for the web itself (thanks to firefox). This means, Help files, Windows update, web forms, and many other features are completely unusable. Whenever I acess any kind of content through IE or it's engine embedded in windows, instead of displaying the HTML I am prompted to download it (open/save dialogged) this is a serious problem and I dont want to re-install windows yet again but it looks like I might have to if things keep going this way.. any help? I havnt been able to find a single mention of this problem on google
So I can't update windows or anything. I can't gt automatic updates to start. When i go in services.msc in start>run i try to start the process for automatic updates and it won't let me. I go to manual, click start, and it says 'could not start automatic update service on local computer. Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it'. Now when I go to auto updates in control panel, it is set on automatic, however it doesn't do it.
About 5 hours ago my pc crashed, since rebooting my usb keyboard no longer works when it reaches windows login. I'm completely lost with this and it's infuriating me. - I'm running windows xp - Never had this issue before with keyboard, it's always worked until 5 hours ago - There is no fault with the keyboard, I've tried in on 2 other systems and it works fine - There's no problems with the USB ports all other usb devices work and work on all the ports. - The mouse as well as all other usb devices work fine - I've uninstalled the keyboard several times and reinstalled with no luck The keyboard is a generic dell one using a dell system. - The device manager doesn't report any issues. The keyboard is listed as installed and working properly. - The keyboard does work in BIOS just not in windows The only way i can get into windows is to use remote desktop from another pc so i can use another systems keyboard to control this pc which is what im doing now.Having endlessly searched for a solution, nothing has worked. There was a registry fix but it hasn't worked. One thing I thought may have caused it was before I had made a registry change to IRPStackSize to try to resolve a network issue. I reverted this change back and still no response from keyboard.
I was leaving to work, so I left the computer in standby. I got home about 7 hours later and when I tried to return to desktop, the fan went on loudly but kept on going and nothing would be displayed on the screen. I just turned it off by the front panel button and went to sleep. This morning, I tried unplugging the whole machine from the electricity plug and replugging it in..well it worked! It started but the fan was constantly working for some reason.I downloaded SpeedFan and at the time the temp was like 43 (normal?). Then I turned it off to see what was wrong with the fan. I opened the box and did a small vacuum just trying to collect the dust.after that NO LUCK.The computer doesn't even come on anymore. I have important files on it.I'm going to be screwed.
I have been playing around with my computer (running windows xp) and found that I'm no longer able to install new software (its says it could be in safe mode).I'm also unable to access the restore function, and the search function. When I do go through the control panel it opens the restore to a blank box (box with no text of instructions or calendar). On the search function it shows a blank box with the yappy dog and no text
