I have been playing around with my computer (running windows xp) and found that I'm no longer able to install new software (its says it could be in safe mode).I'm also unable to access the restore function, and the search function. View 1 RepliesI can no longer install any program with installshield. The process goes about 3/4th the way through and hangs up, no error message, it just stops. I have been able to install a program in safe mode but the program then does not work correctly. I also tried to uninstall a program and that process hangs up also.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAudio died recently, though I realize that now in retrospect.Started running real slow, finally died 4 weeks ago, MOBO wouldn't recognize Hard drive.after trying everything under the sun, I finally bought new harddrive. I installed winXP sp2 After installation, No Network connections.After trouble shooting I discovered that when I change the BIOS to enable on board ethernet, the MOBO recognizes that the PCI ethernet card is there and installs network connections...BUT, when I plug in the cable from the router, It does NOT see the bandwidth. It reads 10MBps when my laptop (plugged into the sme router ) reads 100. Additionally there is a green light on the back indicating that there is a connection AND my router lights up like something is connected.My device manager WILL show the ethernet card and that it is working properly. BUT no network connection (can't browse the I-net, can't connect to other computers on my network, PC is not visible to others on the network. total bytes sent and received remains 0.
View 3 Replies View Related1) i bought it with service pack 1, when i downloaded and installed service pack 2 from the good old windowsupdate site, things started getting funkky.
2) i can no longer install any new updates from the update site. i can download them but when the install part starts, i get errors and asks me to debug them.makes no sense to me.
3) more problems. randomly, my computer screen will sometime go comepletely blue, white white typewriter font, (a windows message) and it will say...blah blah error restart if its ur first time seeing this message.check recently added programs/hardware and contact their manufacturers if uve already seen this message.then it lists some numbers and it poops on me.
4)random popups saying i have memory loss / missing files - they will ask me to debug them or end them.then i have to send ANOTHER stupid error report to windows, yes those are a pain in.
5) my aol instant messenger has problems as well whenever i log off and close aim, i get errors about it saying i need to close it or debug it but i already closed it. sometimes it says im missing files from aim. but how? even when i just installed it
6) sometimes it says my files in win32are pooped.and i get weird errors like warning messages and all this weird crap.
This is not a hardware problem as it just seems to have happened to both my home and work pc's. The exact same issue, the F5 key no longer "refreshes". The only thing I can think of that has been installed recently on both PC's is XP SP3.

Had asked him if he had any idea which OS would be better for my PC.My ISP which is AT&T no longer supports my OS which is 98SE.Without upgrading to another OS I cannot get any updates for the spyware or others they offer.We only have one PC presently and think that may be all we will have.We surf the net, the kids come over and play some games but that is really it nothing too intense.
View 14 Replies View RelatedA Dell Dimensions 2400 with Pentium 4, 256MB memory and a 80GB hard drive. He is running windows xp home edition. We opened up the tower to clean out all the dust using air cans. We were very careful not to touch any wiring or connections to the CD roms or hard drive. We were ready to install 256MB chip more of memory to make it 512MB. However he purchased the wrong chip so we did not install it. I did remove the memory stick it had to show him what to purchase. I then made sure we reinstalled it back properly and tightly. We also installed tune up 2006 and Norton system works to clean out his system. I had tested the cd roms and they seemed to be working. Then my nephew tried to install his I-pod software and the program did not open itself. He then went to my computer to open the software manually and realized that the d:/drive and the e:/drives were not showing. I tried updating the drivers with no luck. My next step was to delete the cd rom's in device manager and reboot the sysytem. The system recognized the hardware and installed the drivers but the cd roms still do not appear in My Computer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW I also tried to do a system restore to an earlier date but windows xp could not restore to an earlier date.

I can no longer use Mozilla because all the icons are gone and there are strange, overlapping words for what used to be the menu bar. When I click on one, such as "bookmarks," I get nothing but a solid black box open on my screen. I am okay with using Internet Explorer, but I would like to be able to import my bookmarks from Mozilla.

I bring up Task Manager, highlight the "not running " program and click "end task" which brings up another box that says "end program". But when I click this box nothing happens for at least a couple of minutes, quite often longer. I can repeat this process over and over and it makes no difference.
View 14 Replies View RelatedBefore my daughter's Dell 8300 with XP Profesional HD crashed it started with up with WINDOWS XP Propfessional while it loads. I replaced the HD and reinstalled XP Pro with service pack 1 from the original CD supplied by Dell. So far so good. I went through all the updates, downloaded and installed service pack 2 for Pro. Now when XP loads it no longer displays "Professional" It displays as if its XP Home. In other words, Windows XP with out the Professional banner. When I check system info it states XP Professional is installed.

When it came back up The password to get into windows was no longer recognized.Can I reinstall windows 2000 without losing files and still get back into windows?I have already done the F8 thing, It seems to be booting fine. It's just when you get to the login screen it won't accept the password.

For some info that may help u, I dont have a headset mic. Just one that sits on your desktop. Its definatly plugged in, I have SP2 for XP Pro.I previously had Windos ME where my mic worked fine. Ive tried doing the audio tuning wizard, but it still says I dont have a mic plugged in and it doesn't detect it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure exactly what brought this on since this is a nearly fresh install of windows, but I have had a problem accessing any web content with internet explorer except for the web itself (thanks to firefox). This means, Help files, Windows update, web forms, and many other features are completely unusable. Whenever I acess any kind of content through IE or it's engine embedded in windows, instead of displaying the HTML I am prompted to download it (open/save dialogged) this is a serious problem and I dont want to re-install windows yet again but it looks like I might have to if things keep going this way.. any help? I havnt been able to find a single mention of this problem on google

When i go in services.msc in start>run i try to start the process for automatic updates and it won't let me. I go to manual, click start, and it says 'could not start automatic update service on local computer. Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it'. Now when I go to auto updates in control panel, it is set on automatic, however it doesn't do it.
View 11 Replies View RelatedAbout 5 hours ago my pc crashed, since rebooting my usb keyboard no longer works when it reaches windows login. I'm completely lost with this and it's infuriating me.
- I'm running windows xp
- Never had this issue before with keyboard, it's always worked until 5 hours ago
- There is no fault with the keyboard, I've tried in on 2 other systems and it works fine
- There's no problems with the USB ports all other usb devices work and work on all the ports.
- The mouse as well as all other usb devices work fine
- I've uninstalled the keyboard several times and reinstalled with no luck
The keyboard is a generic dell one using a dell system.
- The device manager doesn't report any issues. The keyboard is listed as installed and working properly.
- The keyboard does work in BIOS just not in windows
The only way i can get into windows is to use remote desktop from another pc so i can use another systems keyboard to control this pc which is what im doing now.Having endlessly searched for a solution, nothing has worked. There was a registry fix but it hasn't worked. One thing I thought may have caused it was before I had made a registry change to IRPStackSize to try to resolve a network issue. I reverted this change back and still no response from keyboard.
I was leaving to work, so I left the computer in standby. I got home about 7 hours later and when I tried to return to desktop, the fan went on loudly but kept on going and nothing would be displayed on the screen. I just turned it off by the front panel button and went to sleep. This morning, I tried unplugging the whole machine from the electricity plug and replugging it in..well it worked! It started but the fan was constantly working for some reason.I downloaded SpeedFan and at the time the temp was like 43 (normal?). Then I turned it off to see what was wrong with the fan. I opened the box and did a small vacuum just trying to collect the dust.after that NO LUCK.The computer doesn't even come on anymore. I have important files on it.I'm going to be screwed.

We have multiple laptops in our home along with a desktop. We all can connect just fine. We can't figure out what is going on with his. View 3 Replies View RelatedAm running a new laptop with XP SP2. Been working perfectly for a month. I was getting program exceptions in IE6, so I downloaded and installed Firefox. It worked OK, but I could not remove the annoying Google search bar, so I uninstalled the whole Firefox using their uninstall tool that comes with it. Now, I have remnants in the Firefox directory, it didn't do a clean uninstall. But worse- now when I click on any desktop icon (shortcut), Windows asks me what program to use! It opens a window and I select Internet Explorer and check to always use this option, but it does not "remember", so the next time I click that (or any)shortcut, it asks again.

After several weeks of successful running, my Toshiba Satellite T7200 Core2 Duo Laptop (2 Gb DDR2 SODIMM, 100 GB SATA HD) WinXP Pro SP2 with latest patches (Windows Update on) no longer boots normally:System hangs in Windows Start Up screen.Boots and runs successfully in Safe Mode On 11/01, I manually created a System Restore Point after several days of successful operations including booting. When the system hangs in the Windows Start Up screen, and I boot into Safe Mode, the system is successfully booted into normal WinXP Pro SP2 by using the manually created Restore Point. No other (WinXP created) restore points work, i.e., they all hang in the Start Up screen during boot.

After installing it, we went through the startup list and removed alot of stuff, and unfortunately removed two entries...one referencing DLA and the mentioned DVD.Now trying to access the DVD and CD-RW drives and it acts like a disk is not inserted. Went into Device Manager and both listed correctly with no problems. Made several attempts to uninstall them and reinstall them but still no luck.

When I ran Error Checking though, it took MUCH longer than normal and when I rebooted the taskbar was missing and IE would no longer start. This is XP Prof SP2 btw. I checked the obvious taskbar settings, tried restarting explorer.exe via task manager, ran sfc, undid the changes made by spybot and still nothing. I also tried to system restore, but it wont let me load it, saying "system restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and try system restore again."
