Article New Windows XP Service Pack (SP2c) To Fix Product Key Shortage. Microsoft says Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2c is the result of "the longevity of Windows XP Professional", which has made it necessary to create more XP product keys for system builders, who will be permitted to sell the operating system through January 31, 2009. For all of Microsoft's other channels, Windows XP Professional will no longer available after January 31, 2008 " just over five months from now.

How does windows system builder licensing work? I need to understand how it works before I decide to buy into it. Lets pretend i'm buying this Here are my questions: How many times am I allowed to install this on the same pc (same hardware)? Does it allow upgrading major parts within the PC without requiring a new license each time? Can I install it on multiple PC's without requiring a new license each time? I don't care much about MS support not being included, but is it still available if i chose to pay for it?
If I sold my PC I could sell the license with it (transferrable) is this true? Would I need to re-purchase a license when I build a new PC if I transferred it already.

I'm building a new machine for a friend using WinXP Pro system builder's edition. It is my understanding that this edition can only be installed on a single machine - and even changing the hard drive or major hardware component will de-activate it. In the process of trying to fix a BIOS issue, the dang thing reset the SATA controller from the RAID 1 I had setup back to normal SATA. I finally got that fixed - but it somewhat hosed the Windows install - it wants to do diskcheck every time it boots and always find some errors - but if I bypass the diskcheck it boots fine - but there are other problems. if the system builders edition can be reinstalled on the exact same machine with the exact same hardware - or would I have to buy yet another copy?

I'm looking to install a remote connection on the systems i build. As i'm constantly having to walk people through basic tasks i would like to be able to just tell them to start a specific program then let me connect and do all the work. I have tried with windows own remote assistance but half of the time i can't even connect. I have over 150 sytems built and running, hence this software can't cost a lot. I want to install the server side on all these sytems then i can connect remotely from my Client side and carry out basic tasks... ie editing startup registry etc Anyone know of any good free software for this... i've looked at some software but to install on so many machines would cost a fortune.

I am trying to restore an HP PC that shipped with XP Home OEM. The restore disk is damaged and a few files in the i386 folder are unreadable. My ultimate goal is to reinstall XP home without purchasing another license because technically I still own the license, but the CD is damaged.
My question is. Is there a difference between the OEM version the HP used and the OEM version that I purchased with hardware? Is it possible to install my OEM version with the serial number on the PC?
I was also pondering trying to recreate the disk by replacing the damaged files in i386 folder with files from another version of home OEM using nlite.

My new rig recently had a Hauppage WinTV PVR-150MCE analogue TV Tuner attached. Following advice from this forum I was told that I could add any other TV Tuner in addition to what I currently had - it was impossible to add another identical PCI tuner because I am out of slots in my motherboard. So I got the Hauppage WinTV Nova-T DVB USB2.0 Stick - it fits in the USB port, provides me with DVB TV and doesnt have an excess unwanted remote control as I already have an MCE remote that came with the PVR-150MCE.
Now in MCE 2005 I cannot seem to record one channel while watching another. It keeps coming up with the message "Media Center is currently recording X do you want to stop recording and change channel?" - I want to change channel and KEEP recording going, why not do what I bloody well want and look for the other second tuner!!!) Why oh why doesn't Media Center use both the TV Tuners to its full potential?? I thought Media Center 2005 could utilize both tuners so I could watch one channel while recording another regardless of what type of tuner they are.

I don't use System Restore all that often, but when I tried to use it after the last Windows Update, it didn't work. I didn't think all that much of it at the time, until I found out that someone else I know has a similar problem. I tried it again and it still didn't work. I have tried disabling it and then re-booting, turning it on again, re-booting and then setting another resore point, hoping this will clear any corrupted files as well as all the other restore points. Again, this hasn't worked. It is refusing to go back to any restore point I set. What is wrong? I have found this facility really helpful the few times I have needed to use it - in fact a life-saver and wouldn't want to be without it. I am using Windows XP Home - SP3.

My system no longer shuts down by going to Start>Turn Off. It just sits there and doesn't do anything so I have to manually turn it off. What's the problem?

I just installed a new graphics card BFG 6200 G force. My system will no longer come out of standby mode, i have to reboot. I tryed disabling power mangement function in my bios but my PC wont boot unless they are enabled.

Just bought Windows (XP Pro) SP Pro OEM Software ($135. I bought it thinking I could install it in my just built desk top computer but after reading the info I wonder. Do I need to be a licensed builder?? Im not building it for someone else, just for me. Whats with the OPK. Can I just install it as a OS? I may have bought the wrong one but the comment in NewEgg from people who bought it gave me the impression it was for a single licensed user. I called Microsoft but they didn't know. The rep suggested I return it just in case it won't work. My fear is that when I go to OPK they will want a builders license which I don't have.

My system (see below) has run fine for about the first six months of its life with heavy use. Around a month ago I had some odd problems where the system would lock up when I ran the anti virus and explorer.exe would crash. Despite me trying numerous suggestions from eggxperts in a different thread, this issue seemed to go away by itself.
After a few weeks of moderate to heavy use (3 hour gaming sessions) with no issues at all, I all of sudden would get BSOD's immediately after boot up (this happened on two occasions, one shortly after the other). I did a system restore both times and that seemed to do the trick.

i was playing guild wars and my system froze--no bsod or anything like that, everything froze and the computer restarted by itself. after i logged in to windows xp, it told me system recovered from a serious error. i went to event viewer, and found two errors around the time of the crash.

Computer runs on Windows XP Home SP2. Since the last two or three monthly Window updates, that yellow shield icon - the Windows Update icon - no longer shows up in the system tray. I tried to locate it under "previous elements" (I'm translating from German since my computer language is in German), but it's not there. I only know when Window updates have been downloaded when I want to shut down the computer and I have the option to either first install the updates, after which the computer will shut down automatically, or shut down the computer without installing the updates.

A friend is running xp home edition and cannot boot his pc due to corrupted files. He hasn't got his set up disc and adding the hard drive to another pc as a slave drive didn't work. I have used Bart's PE Builder to save files from a pc before but the disc was made from XP Pro. My question is can a Bart's disc made from XP Pro work on a pc running home edition?

Just built my first computer and cannot install Windows XP Home successfully. It will boot from the CD, copy setup files, partition the drive, and then Windows does it's automatic restart which it will do fine, but when it is restarted it says " Resuming setup...." and then the screen goes black and stays that way. This is an OEM Windows XP home CD from another Dell tower, is this the problem? Do I need a new windows XP CD?

This is not a hardware problem as it just seems to have happened to both my home and work pc's. The exact same issue, the F5 key no longer "refreshes". The only thing I can think of that has been installed recently on both PC's is XP SP3.

when I open explorer there's no more CD or DVD drives shown anymore (and I've got one CD burner and one DVD ROM internally and one DVD Burner externally). This means I can't watch any more DVDs on my PC or burn any more discs.

i had been helped over in the security forum with some issues with my PC which have now been resolved thanks to Cybertech. Had asked him if he had any idea which OS would be better for my PC.My ISP which is AT&T no longer supports my OS which is 98SE.Without upgrading to another OS I cannot get any updates for the spyware or others they offer.We only have one PC presently and think that may be all we will have.We surf the net, the kids come over and play some games but that is really it nothing too intense.

A Dell Dimensions 2400 with Pentium 4, 256MB memory and a 80GB hard drive. He is running windows xp home edition. We opened up the tower to clean out all the dust using air cans. We were very careful not to touch any wiring or connections to the CD roms or hard drive. We were ready to install 256MB chip more of memory to make it 512MB. However he purchased the wrong chip so we did not install it. I did remove the memory stick it had to show him what to purchase. I then made sure we reinstalled it back properly and tightly. We also installed tune up 2006 and Norton system works to clean out his system. I had tested the cd roms and they seemed to be working. Then my nephew tried to install his I-pod software and the program did not open itself. He then went to my computer to open the software manually and realized that the d:/drive and the e:/drives were not showing. I tried updating the drivers with no luck. My next step was to delete the cd rom's in device manager and reboot the sysytem. The system recognized the hardware and installed the drivers but the cd roms still do not appear in My Computer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW I also tried to do a system restore to an earlier date but windows xp could not restore to an earlier date.

I used Mozilla as my browser until I upgraded to Windows xp a few days ago. I can no longer use Mozilla because all the icons are gone and there are strange, overlapping words for what used to be the menu bar. When I click on one, such as "bookmarks," I get nothing but a solid black box open on my screen. I am okay with using Internet Explorer, but I would like to be able to import my bookmarks from Mozilla.

when I try to end them it takes an inordinately long time. Like two or more minutes. I bring up Task Manager, highlight the "not running " program and click "end task" which brings up another box that says "end program". But when I click this box nothing happens for at least a couple of minutes, quite often longer. I can repeat this process over and over and it makes no difference.

Before my daughter's Dell 8300 with XP Profesional HD crashed it started with up with WINDOWS XP Propfessional while it loads. I replaced the HD and reinstalled XP Pro with service pack 1 from the original CD supplied by Dell. So far so good. I went through all the updates, downloaded and installed service pack 2 for Pro. Now when XP loads it no longer displays "Professional" It displays as if its XP Home. In other words, Windows XP with out the Professional banner. When I check system info it states XP Professional is installed.

I changed the computer which is running Windows 2000 server from a domain to a work group and then rebooted. When it came back up The password to get into windows was no longer recognized.Can I reinstall windows 2000 without losing files and still get back into windows?I have already done the F8 thing, It seems to be booting fine. It's just when you get to the login screen it won't accept the password.

I am running a computer with Windows XP SP2. When I put a card in my card reader it used to automatically open the picture download wizard. When I put in a DVD it automatically opened Power DVD. When I plugged in my MP3 player it automatically opened its associated software. Now, nothing seems to auto start.

since i got XP, my microphone no longer works. It says that it doesn't detect it and that I should plug it in but I'm 100% sure its plugged in, Ive checked. For some info that may help u, I dont have a headset mic. Just one that sits on your desktop. Its definatly plugged in, I have SP2 for XP Pro.I previously had Windos ME where my mic worked fine. Ive tried doing the audio tuning wizard, but it still says I dont have a mic plugged in and it doesn't detect it.

I'm not sure exactly what brought this on since this is a nearly fresh install of windows, but I have had a problem accessing any web content with internet explorer except for the web itself (thanks to firefox). This means, Help files, Windows update, web forms, and many other features are completely unusable. Whenever I acess any kind of content through IE or it's engine embedded in windows, instead of displaying the HTML I am prompted to download it (open/save dialogged) this is a serious problem and I dont want to re-install windows yet again but it looks like I might have to if things keep going this way.. any help? I havnt been able to find a single mention of this problem on google
