i was playing guild wars and my system froze--no bsod or anything like that, everything froze and the computer restarted by itself. after i logged in to windows xp, it told me system recovered from a serious error. i went to event viewer, and found two errors around the time of the crash.
View 2 RepliesI'm running XP Home Edition. A few days back I contracted one of those viruses that hi-jacks IE, but I was able to catch it before it completely installed. I used Malwarebytes, AVG and SuperAntiVirus to get rid of it and (after several scans) I'm now pretty certain that my system is 100% clean.Nevertheless, under the one user account that was infected AND in Admin (Safe Mode), programs like IE, Firefox, and Rhapsody can no longer find an Internet connection. Also Malwarebytes and SuperAntiVirus can't find their respective update servers. However, Bittorrent and Outlook still work fine and I can still ping IPs and Web addresses from the command window. The other odd thing is that one user account (on the same computer and that does not have Admin privileges) is still working perfectly.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Media Center Desktop PC with Windows XP SP2. I had no problem using my Screen Saver or Standby Mode when I had dial-up internet service. I decided to go with Starband Satellite Internet Service and I have had problems ever since. My PC goes into Standby Mode with no problem but will not stay, after a time my monitor and PC come back on, at times my Screen Saver fails to come on. I have checked my power settings and reset them, they are the same as they were before. The modem is always on but if I unplug the power cord Standby Mode and Screen Saver work normally. Starband says the problem is not because of their syatem. I would appreciate help to correct this issue.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI don't use System Restore all that often, but when I tried to use it after the last Windows Update, it didn't work. I didn't think all that much of it at the time, until I found out that someone else I know has a similar problem. I tried it again and it still didn't work. I have tried disabling it and then re-booting, turning it on again, re-booting and then setting another resore point, hoping this will clear any corrupted files as well as all the other restore points. Again, this hasn't worked. It is refusing to go back to any restore point I set. What is wrong? I have found this facility really helpful the few times I have needed to use it - in fact a life-saver and wouldn't want to be without it. I am using Windows XP Home - SP3.

When it came back up The password to get into windows was no longer recognized.Can I reinstall windows 2000 without losing files and still get back into windows?I have already done the F8 thing, It seems to be booting fine. It's just when you get to the login screen it won't accept the password.

For some info that may help u, I dont have a headset mic. Just one that sits on your desktop. Its definatly plugged in, I have SP2 for XP Pro.I previously had Windos ME where my mic worked fine. Ive tried doing the audio tuning wizard, but it still says I dont have a mic plugged in and it doesn't detect it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure exactly what brought this on since this is a nearly fresh install of windows, but I have had a problem accessing any web content with internet explorer except for the web itself (thanks to firefox). This means, Help files, Windows update, web forms, and many other features are completely unusable. Whenever I acess any kind of content through IE or it's engine embedded in windows, instead of displaying the HTML I am prompted to download it (open/save dialogged) this is a serious problem and I dont want to re-install windows yet again but it looks like I might have to if things keep going this way.. any help? I havnt been able to find a single mention of this problem on google

When i go in services.msc in start>run i try to start the process for automatic updates and it won't let me. I go to manual, click start, and it says 'could not start automatic update service on local computer. Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it'. Now when I go to auto updates in control panel, it is set on automatic, however it doesn't do it.
View 11 Replies View RelatedAbout 5 hours ago my pc crashed, since rebooting my usb keyboard no longer works when it reaches windows login. I'm completely lost with this and it's infuriating me.
- I'm running windows xp
- Never had this issue before with keyboard, it's always worked until 5 hours ago
- There is no fault with the keyboard, I've tried in on 2 other systems and it works fine
- There's no problems with the USB ports all other usb devices work and work on all the ports.
- The mouse as well as all other usb devices work fine
- I've uninstalled the keyboard several times and reinstalled with no luck
The keyboard is a generic dell one using a dell system.
- The device manager doesn't report any issues. The keyboard is listed as installed and working properly.
- The keyboard does work in BIOS just not in windows
The only way i can get into windows is to use remote desktop from another pc so i can use another systems keyboard to control this pc which is what im doing now.Having endlessly searched for a solution, nothing has worked. There was a registry fix but it hasn't worked. One thing I thought may have caused it was before I had made a registry change to IRPStackSize to try to resolve a network issue. I reverted this change back and still no response from keyboard.
My daughters Disk Cleanup Utility was hanging when compressing old files. Microsoft has posted an easy fix but the end result is that Disk Cleanup no longer works at all. Has anyone experienced this problem?

She recently moved her desktop from the floor to her desk to get it away from the pet hair, and i made sure the wires are all in good condition and plugged in correctly. Pc crashes the internet all the time, he is working on a ACER Laptop,everyone else gets internet just fine, it is his laptop that won't get it all the time, and when he does get it, it sometimes only lasts for up most to about 3 to 4 hours. if he is that lucky.could this be an internal problem? or could a file have been corrupted somewhere in the system?right now he is running a disk scan to see if it picks up anything but i don't think it will.

I installed winXP sp2 After installation, No Network connections.After trouble shooting I discovered that when I change the BIOS to enable on board ethernet, the MOBO recognizes that the PCI ethernet card is there and installs network connections...BUT, when I plug in the cable from the router, It does NOT see the bandwidth. It reads 10MBps when my laptop (plugged into the sme router ) reads 100. Additionally there is a green light on the back indicating that there is a connection AND my router lights up like something is connected.My device manager WILL show the ethernet card and that it is working properly. BUT no network connection (can't browse the I-net, can't connect to other computers on my network, PC is not visible to others on the network. total bytes sent and received remains 0.

If i restart it works for one or two IE pages but is really slow. AIM works but is also really slow. But I can use both fine on Safe mode with networking. Any thoughts? View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a 3Com 10/100BASE-TX Ethernet Adapter card. XP Pro recognized the card and installed it automatically. The device is working properly. My cable modem Data light constantly blinks when there is a connection. The NIC acknowledges this and blinks with it (just as my other NIC did). I still cannot connect to the internet.
I am good with computers for the most part when it comes to PC troubleshooting, but I have very limited experience with network troubleshooting. I am assuming that there are settings somewhere that I need to manually change. Somebody at school said I had to do something with the registry. I would prefer to stay away from the registry if there is another option available.
Whenever i launch internet explorer it takes longer than usual to load. And when i go to type a web address it just freezes and never loads a new webpage. I don;t know what is going on. This has started to happen on friday. I;ve ran the following and they found some stuff and have deleted it but i still have the same problem. I;ve even tried system restore and it still persist. I noticed that when i try to delete my history i get an error about not being able to open shell32.dll or something and that some about a inetcpl.cpl is having a problem.
I updated the site and now when I open Firefox it's just a blank page. No errors are displayed. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and it's still the same. The Internet Exlporer works but I rather use Firefox.

After 5 mins, I lose connection anything online.In safe mode, I stay connected forever, and internet explorer works.
View 2 Replies View Relatedmy problem is this, i switched on one of my home pc,s today and after briefly connecting to the internet it seemed to freeze/crash so i switched off & on again and no matter what i try which includes running the network setup wizard i keep on getting the same result, an error box(microsoft visual c++ runtime library) stating that a buffer overun has been detected which has corrupted the pc,s internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must be terminated. I have no idea what caused this as this is the first time ive seen this error.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a hp windows xp model number a705w and a problem arose with my internet. Whenever i open up any web browser (IE, Firefox, Safari) it won't let me!!! When i run the diagnostics for IE it says there is a problem with my HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP ports (error 12029). I do not have any firewalls besides the normal windows one and sometimes I have gone as far as to turn that off too but that doesn't work either. The wierd thing is that all the web browsers work in safe mode with networking but not in the normal mode so my ISP says there is aproblem my computer.. any ideas what it is or how to fix it?

In 'tools/internet options' I am missing the section for deleting cookies and files.I only have the security options of'security/privacy/content/ connections /advanced'I dont know how or why this happened as I used to delete my temp files daily. I now have to get to them through 'my computer' and delete them all manually. My keyboard delete button is getting a work-out.
