I changed the computer which is running Windows 2000 server from a domain to a work group and then rebooted. When it came back up The password to get into windows was no longer recognized.Can I reinstall windows 2000 without losing files and still get back into windows?I have already done the F8 thing, It seems to be booting fine. It's just when you get to the login screen it won't accept the password.

For some info that may help u, I dont have a headset mic. Just one that sits on your desktop. Its definatly plugged in, I have SP2 for XP Pro.I previously had Windos ME where my mic worked fine. Ive tried doing the audio tuning wizard, but it still says I dont have a mic plugged in and it doesn't detect it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure exactly what brought this on since this is a nearly fresh install of windows, but I have had a problem accessing any web content with internet explorer except for the web itself (thanks to firefox). This means, Help files, Windows update, web forms, and many other features are completely unusable. Whenever I acess any kind of content through IE or it's engine embedded in windows, instead of displaying the HTML I am prompted to download it (open/save dialogged) this is a serious problem and I dont want to re-install windows yet again but it looks like I might have to if things keep going this way.. any help? I havnt been able to find a single mention of this problem on google

When i go in services.msc in start>run i try to start the process for automatic updates and it won't let me. I go to manual, click start, and it says 'could not start automatic update service on local computer. Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it'. Now when I go to auto updates in control panel, it is set on automatic, however it doesn't do it.

- I'm running windows xp
- Never had this issue before with keyboard, it's always worked until 5 hours ago
- There is no fault with the keyboard, I've tried in on 2 other systems and it works fine
- There's no problems with the USB ports all other usb devices work and work on all the ports.
- The mouse as well as all other usb devices work fine
- I've uninstalled the keyboard several times and reinstalled with no luck
The keyboard is a generic dell one using a dell system.
- The device manager doesn't report any issues. The keyboard is listed as installed and working properly.
- The keyboard does work in BIOS just not in windows
The only way i can get into windows is to use remote desktop from another pc so i can use another systems keyboard to control this pc which is what im doing now.Having endlessly searched for a solution, nothing has worked. There was a registry fix but it hasn't worked. One thing I thought may have caused it was before I had made a registry change to IRPStackSize to try to resolve a network issue. I reverted this change back and still no response from keyboard.
My daughters Disk Cleanup Utility was hanging when compressing old files. Microsoft has posted an easy fix but the end result is that Disk Cleanup no longer works at all. Has anyone experienced this problem?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't use System Restore all that often, but when I tried to use it after the last Windows Update, it didn't work. I didn't think all that much of it at the time, until I found out that someone else I know has a similar problem. I tried it again and it still didn't work. I have tried disabling it and then re-booting, turning it on again, re-booting and then setting another resore point, hoping this will clear any corrupted files as well as all the other restore points. Again, this hasn't worked. It is refusing to go back to any restore point I set. What is wrong? I have found this facility really helpful the few times I have needed to use it - in fact a life-saver and wouldn't want to be without it. I am using Windows XP Home - SP3.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running XP Home Edition. A few days back I contracted one of those viruses that hi-jacks IE, but I was able to catch it before it completely installed. I used Malwarebytes, AVG and SuperAntiVirus to get rid of it and (after several scans) I'm now pretty certain that my system is 100% clean.Nevertheless, under the one user account that was infected AND in Admin (Safe Mode), programs like IE, Firefox, and Rhapsody can no longer find an Internet connection. Also Malwarebytes and SuperAntiVirus can't find their respective update servers. However, Bittorrent and Outlook still work fine and I can still ping IPs and Web addresses from the command window. The other odd thing is that one user account (on the same computer and that does not have Admin privileges) is still working perfectly.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Media Center Desktop PC with Windows XP SP2. I had no problem using my Screen Saver or Standby Mode when I had dial-up internet service. I decided to go with Starband Satellite Internet Service and I have had problems ever since. My PC goes into Standby Mode with no problem but will not stay, after a time my monitor and PC come back on, at times my Screen Saver fails to come on. I have checked my power settings and reset them, they are the same as they were before. The modem is always on but if I unplug the power cord Standby Mode and Screen Saver work normally. Starband says the problem is not because of their syatem. I would appreciate help to correct this issue.
View 11 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I tried to update my families pc to SP2 so I could get all the updates etc. It seemed to install alright, but then when starting up it gave me some drwatson.exe error which ended up freezing the pc. So I did what I thought was safest at the time and that was to go back to a restore point and then maybe try reinstall SP2. BUT, after restoring, windows suddenly showed the password/log on screens. I now can't log on as Administrator OR Guest. Nothing works. I've tried EVERY possible password that I could have used in the passed, but nothing works. So now I can't get into the pc at all. I've tried booting up in safe mode and logging in as administrator with a blank password, but that doesn't even work. I've read a lot about it online, and it seems the only solution would be to reinstall XP. But would that work as a format and erase some of my files and/or settings? Or would it just be like an upgrade?

I can log into my profile page for yahoo, I can change the password on both so I know the login id is correct and the password is correct, but when I try to login to the mailbox, it says the password is incorrect. What is crazy is that I can login to other password login sites such as my online stock trading account and other sites...
but for yahoo, msn (hotmail) and some others, such as a forum web sites, etc. there is some glitch that does not recognize the correct password and let me in. I use the Windows xp remote desktop connection for my PC and my laptop via Wifi. When I first established it and sent an invite to my laptop my main pc had a password that was required to log on, so I used the same password to log onto the PC through the remote desktop via my laptop. Now, I have removed the password from my main PC but when I do that I cannot log onto through the remote desktop connection via my laptop because it won't accept a blank for the password. It will only work if I have a password on my user account on my main pc.

The hand cursor never becomes a cursor for me to type in passowords to user accounts. I went into safe mode and then into control panel and deleted the passwords for each user acct and now I can get into the accounts but how can I add the passwords again and be able to type them in. We have 3 user accounts on this pc and would like to have them password protected.

Spybot Search and Destroy flashed up and I clicked to allow, or not allow as the case may be, to do something to, from what I can remember, 'WLON' or something similarly named. In any case, what happens now is that I fire up the computer, enter my password, the desktop briefly flashes up for a split second(no icons) and then it immediately logs off and goes to password entry again.

Over a year ago, I got tired of entering my password because I an the only person that uses this computer. I did something so it would boot without the password screen appearing ( I don't remember what, but I think I left the password line blank).
Since the computer boots directly to my account, I am never prompted to enter a password; but if I use Power Options (and the computer sleeps), it wakes to the login screen and I cannot reenter my account. I have to reboot. On the login screen, I have tried leaving the password blank and entering every password I use, but I get an Invalid Password response.
I got Compaq Armada 1592 Its screen said password expired, enter old password, then the new password. I entered old password, tried all sorts of combinations of upper case, lower case I thought I could just bypass that screen and start as new user, but apparently
not.
I am currently trying to set up a log in for xp where the user changes based upon only the password you enter. in other words there will only be one user and it will change based upon the password you enter. i also want to be able to tell who logged on and when.
for example say i setting up a business computer that 20 people will use but i don't want 20 accounts i only want one and each people will have a different password and based upon the password they enter i will be able to tell who downloaded what and installed what by knowing who logged on. thanks for the help

My Brother bought a used laptop from a stranger but it works and everything but the password. Here are more details: It's a Dell Inspiron 2100 and the operating system is windows 2000 professional. The laptop does not include a CD or Floppy drive but it has 1 USB port. now when my Brother bought the laptop we powered it on and it worked fine until a "Log On to Windows" box appear and you need to type a user name and password to log in but we don't have the password and we cannot contact the guy he bought the laptop from so what should we do?
