I would like to be able to log access to my folders from the network. That is, I want to know when an administrator has accessed my drive. I have private/confidential information on my PC and do not want administrators to be able to access it, unless I give explicit permission.
View 21 Repliesi just installed a fresh winxp pro, i did not set any password so the windows starts up without asking password, so i believed i have the administrative rights i have 2 local drives (c:) and (d:) i run gpedit.msc and configure the following:
1. remove run in start menu
2. remove search in start menu
3. prohibit command prompt to be use
4. Prevent access to drive access from my computer (drive c: only)
5. Hide specific drive in my computer (drive c: only)
i closed gpedit.msc now i cant re-run gpedit.msc to configure my settings again because i cannot access drive c: where gpedit resides (c:windowssystem32gpedit.msc) i dont want to re-install the whole thing or to start all over again. winxp expert
My windows xp home edition decided not to run, for some reason,,, ive installed another operating system, thats working fine, but the rpoblem is now there are a couple fodlers in my docutments that i made private,,,, now i cant view them using the new operating system
View 1 Replies View Relatedone my user profiles was set to 'Keep files Private' in XP Pro SP2 (workgroup, not domain). The windows installation has gone pear shaped. I am trying to get those users file/folders off the hard disk by connecting it up as a slave. I can see the contents of the disk fine but get 'Access Denied' (as you would do) when trying to access that particualr user profiles.Tried running recovery console, windows install repair, but think its messed up completed, I can however browse the disk from another PC, hence my question - BTW can't take ownership of file as PC I am trying from is not a member of a domain (although I could maybe try on one - would this work?)
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a new Dell computer with windows xp operating system. My old computer was a gateway with windows xp also. The mother board on the gateway crashed and I could not find a replacement thus I purchased the new dell. I extracted the hard drive from the gateway and installed in an external drive case. All works well and I am able to retreve data from the gate way hard drive with one exception. While the hard drive was installed in the gateway I elected to make some of the folders private, ie right click on folder, click on sharing and security and clicking on private. This worked fine in the gateway but when I installed in external hard drive I am getting an "access denied" error message when trying to open with the Dell.

This is to prevent data loss coz im the only one in the family using the other os on drive c, but even though when they use e: they can still access the contents of c: and d:. how to prevent this?

View 11 Replies View Relatedmicrosofts website states that on your old machine if you un-install the drive before removing it, you should then be able to move it over to the new computer and everything should be dandy, now unfortunatly ive set up the new computer and the old computer isnt working for some reason and im not sure what happend along the way but thats another matter altogether.
my question is, is it possible for me to recover the information on this disk? xp is currently asking me to format the disk whenever i try to access it.
PartitionMagic and DiskManagement in XP both show the drive and its full amount of space but unfortunatly it doenst show up any partitions, it is however listed in PartitionMagic as a "dynamic disk".
How can I copy and send the information available at the bottom of drwtson32.exe for application errors? I can access the info, but I want to be able to send it to the software vendor so they can determine the problem. It doesn't make a mini dump. I guess that is because the is no BSOD, only an application that has to shut down.

I gave in and bought another hdd on which I reinstalled XP (Home SP2), and fitted the original drive as a 2nd drive in the machine so all the original files are still accessible (or so I thought).
There are a 4 user accounts on both the old and new installations, and I had set mine to keep my files private (while the others weren't). I can now copy the settings, bookmarks etc etc for everyone else from the old drive to the new one, but my own stuff is encrypted and inaccessible. The user name and password are both exactly the same on the old and new hdd's, but the system isn't running from the old hdd, and so I can get at them even though I'm using the same password.
I'm a Mac User but bought a golf sky caddy (uses GPS to find your distances on a golf course) which required connecting the device via USB to the computer, loading a PC based driver and then having the website "communicate" with the device to download information.I successfully loaded the driver but to an error message from IE 6 says to the effect: "there is a security issue here and we're not going to let you access that web site". That dialogue box says "click here" for options around this. But that function does not work.

We don't have one of those password reset disk that the Windows website says. I have a disk that says "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition System Recovery CD/DVD" I was told if I reinstalled Windows on the computer that it would erase the entire harddrive. There are alot of pictures on the computer, not to mention Microsoft Office, that I don't want to lose. My mom passed away suddenly and while I know her other passwords, this one is different which leads me to believe one of my younger cousins was messing with her computer and did something they didn't mean.Is there anyway possible to reset the password and use the computer without losing all the pictures on it?

All of my hard disk drives (except the linux partitions) are NTFS. I encrypted the My Documents folder and all of its files and subfolders.Today I reinstalled XP in the C drive, after a quick format on it. I was unaware of the fact that what might be happened to My Documents folder. Now I can only view the files and folders inside My Documents folder. Neither I open any file, nor I decrypt those files. Windows is saying access denied.

I ran a windows recovery on my HardDrive yesterday - I selected NOT to delete any of my files.Now Ive set windows all up again, and I cannot access my documents. Firstly when i right click on the my documents folder it says 'empty', but when i try to double click it it gives me a 'cant access' error.My hard disk is showing on 1.8 Gb remaining, so my documents are still there somewhere, i just dont know how to access them?

Ok, heres the lowdown. EDIT: I run Windows XP SP2!
I share my music on my home network, it was working fine all the computers/laptops (we have about 3) could access my music collection and play it (only my 'My Music' folder was shared, not the whole drive).
About a week ago i had to put my pc user account passworded since i had alot of information about xmas prezzys on there, and i really didnt want my family finding it since they use my pc once in a while (was just being safe). I remeber when i set the password, it said 'do you want to make this account private, other people wont be able to see your files on it) that sounded like a good idea, so i clicked yes.
Now after a few days after christmas my sister wanted to access my music again, so i took the password off. But a problem occured, the laptop or any other pc's couldnt access my music. It apears on Network places but they cant open it or play the files. I go to the shared options and the problem is, is that the 'Private' box is checked. Of course being computers wanting to make it soo hard for you, it was greyed out so i couldnt uncheck it. I click the 'cannot make this public because another folder is private' or somthing. I click on that and it brings me to my user file, for me it is called 'Owner'. Im not sharing my entire drive so i dont want to make this shared, but making it public doesnt matter since im not sharing it. But alas 'Make this folder private' is also greyed out.
I recently upgraded my computer's CPU/Motherboard/RAM etc however, after plugging in my old hard drives, Windows failed to load. In an effort to save my old files I reinstalled windows XP on my secondary hard drive, hoping to access my original hard drive's files through the reinstalled version of windows. Everything went according to plan except when trying to access the old My Documents folder, and the computer says Access denied, probably because that folder was declared private on my old network and because the user account was password protected.

The virus is now wiped out, but my old install of windows was ruined. I attempted several methods of troubleshooting, the latest being running a windows repair through the CD. The current situation of the old install is that it boots up to a black screen where I can manoever the mouse cursor as desired but without any other functionality (this is before the login screen, which never occurs).

View 8 Replies View RelatedMy problem is with the above drives. I have Windows XP Pro and have followed all the instructions to get drives back working. They did work just fine till I put an old program on which conflicted with windows which said it couldn't be accessed so I unintalled it and then lost all the drives. I have since been able to get them back where they are recognized in My Computer and in the bios. In the bios they were always recognized but not in My Computer or in System files. In Device Manager they say all are working properly but still cannot use them. Can anyone tell me what else to do? I have followed all windows instructions but still can't use them.
