CAn Xp Show Proper Amount Of Ram At-least Once In System?
Dec 11, 2004
Just upgraded 128 mg (which showed as 112 in System) with additional 512 slot. This shows as 608. Is there a way to force XP to read the actual amount of installed ram just once before it allocates it to vir mem? Not vital. Just curious.Getting to know xp.
I have 4 x 1GB sticks of RAM in my new PC i just built recently. but in XP System Properties it says there's only 3.25 why is that? does it have to do with the same reason HDDs don't really have 500GB if so on my old PC i had 768MB of RAM and it said i had exactly that.
I keep getting a little pop-up telling me I have X amount (under 200MB) of free disk space. So, I run disk clean-up, which helps a little. I finally decided it's time to try to run the disk defragmenter (it's been a long time since I have), but I need to free up 15% of my hard drive to run it.I've deleted all the programs I'm comfortable deleting, I've deleted temporary files and I still only have 1% of free space. I've try to do some research, but everyone just says to run the defrag tool to free up space, no one says what to do if you can't run the tool cause you dont have enough space.
When I look at my system properties it says I have 448 M of Ram when I should have 512M. Also When I try and run some programs my CPU is maxing out and explorer.exe is using half of it.
I am having to set up a computer for a friend of mind and we are having a disagreement on the proper method of backing up information on a hard drive. His system has a Maxtor USB hard drive for backing up the hard drive. He keeps saying he needs a complete system back. I point out that if the entire system is backup on a schedule you are backing up problems as you go. I told him the data is what needs to be backed up (along with the original installation before the data was added. But I am not sure .what is the perferred method for backing up a system?
my computer even though it is turned of the proper way thru the Start button, after 2-3 hours I find it on again No virus or other malaware has being detected by scanning with various softwares.
I am running XP professional and want to find out how to set it so that it will lock the pc after a set amount of time when the user has been away. I don't want it to log out, just lock the pc, like when you go to the switch user screen, only automatically.
i just installed a 512 meg stick of memory in my laptop that should have given me 768 meg but in "my computer" it only shows i have 736 megs of memory. is this normal? it is a toshiba satellite with windows xp.
I am using a video production system that a great deal of RAM, sometimes over a gigabite at a time. To accommodate this need, I am trying to eliminate as much resident memory as possible. Since I turn off all internet connections at such times, any Windows-based files relating to internet work can be eliminated Indeed, I have found that even explorer can be removed and I can use task manager to start the program. Can anyone tell me what Windows files are essential for proper functioning when off line?
I was looking many replies, but could not find any about this topic, I'm facing the following problem: I would like to have my Disk space (750GB) subdivided to accomplish the following:
1 - Boot Windows XP Prof SP2 x86 2 - Boot Windows XP Prof SP2 x64 3 - Store my Data Folders and Files separately (to do Backups from one place). 4 - Boot to Ubuntu 7.10 and alternatively 5 - Boot to Ubuntu Server 6 - Create System Backups for my Laptop (6.1), old PC (6.2) and for this new PC (6.3).
I recently reinstalled the Home Edition and now after rebooting the computer goes directly to the Home Edition. I changed the boot file too. When I boot up I get the two options, but when I log in to the Professional Edition I get an error. I suppose that the way I name the Professional Edition is not okay.If it is the problem, where can I find the proper name of the Professional Edition installed in my computer.
My question: What is the best way create another partition and format the remainder of my HD? I have the retail WINXP CD (non SP2). When doing a fresh installation, I created a 50 GB partition on my new 300 GB Seagate HD. As you know, the "non SP2" CD does not allow the installer to recognize the full 300 GB at installation. So basically, I have (1) active 50 GB partition with XP installed on it. The remaining 250 GB is open and empty. I finally have the computer running; installed SP2, drivers, etc. How can I properly access the rest of the drive to create several more partitions and format?
All of the sudden yesterday my computer just decided to start running very slowly. Nothing really changed with the exception of me installing the new Java update that my computer told me it needed. Now, at all times, all the items in my task manager use a huge amount of memory and I am completely unable to multitask. Right now, Firefox is using 180,000K of memory and this is the only website I have up, as well as the only program that I am running. Neither Firefox or IE ever used to use this much memory. I have included a screenshot of the task manager from when I first restarted my computer today. I have restarted, defragged, cleaned up the disk, everything. My specs are as follows: Dell Laptop, Intel Celeron M Processor 1.40 Ghz, 504mb of RAM, 80gb hard drive (hard drive is brand new).
Even when Firefox or IE is the only thing running, some websites bog the entire computer down and it stalls for minutes without moving. Then, all of the sudden, it catches up with itself and does everything I tried to do while it was frozen. I know I don't have a lot of RAM and it isn't the newest and fastest system out there, but the sudden onset of this makes me think that my computer isn't just outdated, something changed in the system. Can anyone tell me what is going on here? How can I stop all these applications from using so much memory and be able to multitask and stream online media again?
My computer has recently been getting an annoying amount of pop/ups for Winfixer, and WinAntispyware advertisements while surfing the web, but I haven't had it as a browser hijacker. Everytime I delete it from my registry site list it returns. I'm just wondering if what can i do to permanently get rid of this annoying pest. I have run adaware, spybot, spysubtract, AVG, Norton and nothing seems to get rid if this. Can someone run me though detailed steps or excellent free programs that will terminate this forever
Reformatted my hard drive, Drive C and reinstalled Windows XP Professional SP3 and all the drivers. The drive is 120 GB. I have a Dell 8300, now all of a sudden when I click on Drive C it shows that I only have 24% unused space on my hard drive. It has been defragged and I know it shouldn't be showing that full.
To view the amount of time that XP has been running with out rebooting or restarting the computer:1) Open the Command Prompt (located under Accessories).2) Type 'systeminfo' (without the dashes).3) Once the system has finished gathering the information, scroll up and the time is displayed in the System Up Time field. As you can see, running systeminfo also gives a lot of useful information.
i was trying to watch videos on my favourite site and i cannot view any videos .i have repaired wmp 10 and it still doesnt work i tried copying the URL ( from the web page ) and pasting it in VLC player and then it works .wmp10 not having the proper active X component installed to view web media . evennthought music ect plays just fine in wmp 10. just not videos.
1st I use internet explorer for my web browser. At work when I click on it it pops right up with out even thinking about it Page loads with in 10 seconds every time. At home. Some times it will take 30 seconds to a minute to start after I click on it.2nd issue is this Occasionally I will come into my computer after not using it for 8-10 hours or so and I will have a ton (sometimes 40+) Error messages that say "unable to launch restart.exe".I can close all of them but then the computer runs like a tank. I always have to do a hard shut down after this too.It will NOT restart using the proper methods just hangs up.
I recently re-installed win. xp on the dell insperation 2400. Everything went find except the resoluton wouldn't change from the 480 x ...so I tried to set up my dial up but I needed a higher resolution. I did finally find a way to get that although it was very poor quality and I figured that I'd be able to down load the proper driver once on line, which I did do, although I'm not sure it was the right one, as dell doesn't seem to have anything for that model of pc. Anyway I also downloaded the Microsoft updates to get back to current for the secruity stuff. When that was done it required restart, which I did. When it restarted the monitor remained blank after the win. xp part was done loading. I know its on and that my pc is sitting there running, but I can't see anything. I restarted using F5 and tried; last known good configuration, vga mode, and safe mode. In the 1st 2 no monitor. In safemode the whole screen filled with a dos like line repeated over again to fill the whole screen, then a message came on that said, "stop!!! fatal error and I can't remember what else. Can you help? I guess I should mention that I don't have the right driver disk that came with the pc.
If I use any program other than windows explorer to check my HD space, it says about 20 gigs left, windows right now says 0kb on both c, d and e partitions. I run off e at the moment.A few days ago I deleted lots of files and just made a huge 15 gig txt file because I was bored... then I deleted the txt file and the space didnt change (I made sure it was deleted, I know the recycle bin doesnt do its job) and as the space didnt change I used a program called Rollback RX to rollback my HD to a few days ago. so I got my deleted files back (from before the txt file) and checked windows says I am running out of space.
I've been doing some system maintenance to keep everything running smoothly and correctly. What the problem is that when i go to properties for my computer(system information) it reads out.
i was having the windows 7 then i install windows xp sp2. the windows xp hide the windows 7. now system boots only on windows xp. it does not show the option for operating system and start the windowx xp. now how could i get both the operating system without formating again
Like to know where all of the system files went? Such as the pagefile, autoexec.bat, etc. In any folder that contains files. Click on the tools menu and select folder options. Then click on the view tab. Locate where it lists Hide protected operating system files and uncheck it.Click yes on the box that will pop up.Click OK.
When I select Help & Support from the Start menu I get a dialog that says:"Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not running. To fix this problem, start the service named "Help and Support"When I run MSCONFIG and look for help and support it's not there.a bunch of Microsoft services are turned off in MSCONFIG. Would be good to know what should be on.
last night i ran a system restore (to two day prior), i had left the computer, awhile later came back, logged in and waited for windows to start up, the wallpaper of my desktop came up but nothing else, i waited about 20 minutes before leaving again for awhile, returning to the computer in about a half hour. after waiting an hour+ with the computer doing nothing
This is the first time i've done this. I'm using windows xp. I have a flash drive that i use for backing up files. All of a sudden I can't access it. When i plug it back into the USB port that I used it originally, the computer reconizes that it is plugged in (by showing that i have a new drive) but asks me to insert a disk. I've tried it in my other USB2 ports with no luck. I notice that the LCD (?) flashes when I plug it in. I've tried other flash drives in the same ports and they work fine. I'm wondering if I some how changed the format from FAT to NTFS or the other way around.
I put in my new 4g SD micro I bought off ebay and try to add music to it, instead I get "the Disk in Drive F is not formated". So I try to format it and it says "windows was unable to complete the format"? I look at the "File system" and it show FAT. Now I have read that in order to get mp3's to play you must have it set to FAT32? I can't change the "File system" it has no other options in the drop down?
Presario v6000 with windows XP professional. When I try to start windows I get a blue screen with white text stating that window terminated unexpectedly. Then it shuts down and attempts to reboot with the same result. I ordered a recovery disk from HP. when I attemted to install the; I received an error message stating the software does not support this system. I call HP and they claim it's a virus or a computer issue. How do I process to get my system working again? or did HP send the wrong disk?
