I am running XP professional and want to find out how to set it so that it will lock the pc after a set amount of time when the user has been away. I don't want it to log out, just lock the pc, like when you go to the switch user screen, only automatically.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSeveral strange things happened after a lock-up and reboot. Defrag and System Restore will not longer work. Norton Internet security advanced protection turns off. I have also had a problem receintly when starting up where a box opens that says "DWRCST tray icon encountered a problem and must shut down". Also, I am able to log onto my IPS and some websites will open as they should and when clicking on others, a page opens that says Internet Explorer cannot open this page. This also happens when I try to open this website, so I must use another computer to get here.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI keep getting a little pop-up telling me I have X amount (under 200MB) of free disk space. So, I run disk clean-up, which helps a little. I finally decided it's time to try to run the disk defragmenter (it's been a long time since I have), but I need to free up 15% of my hard drive to run it.I've deleted all the programs I'm comfortable deleting, I've deleted temporary files and I still only have 1% of free space. I've try to do some research, but everyone just says to run the defrag tool to free up space, no one says what to do if you can't run the tool cause you dont have enough space.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAll of the sudden yesterday my computer just decided to start running very slowly. Nothing really changed with the exception of me installing the new Java update that my computer told me it needed. Now, at all times, all the items in my task manager use a huge amount of memory and I am completely unable to multitask. Right now, Firefox is using 180,000K of memory and this is the only website I have up, as well as the only program that I am running. Neither Firefox or IE ever used to use this much memory. I have included a screenshot of the task manager from when I first restarted my computer today. I have restarted, defragged, cleaned up the disk, everything. My specs are as follows: Dell Laptop, Intel Celeron M Processor 1.40 Ghz, 504mb of RAM, 80gb hard drive (hard drive is brand new).
Even when Firefox or IE is the only thing running, some websites bog the entire computer down and it stalls for minutes without moving. Then, all of the sudden, it catches up with itself and does everything I tried to do while it was frozen. I know I don't have a lot of RAM and it isn't the newest and fastest system out there, but the sudden onset of this makes me think that my computer isn't just outdated, something changed in the system. Can anyone tell me what is going on here? How can I stop all these applications from using so much memory and be able to multitask and stream online media again?
My computer has recently been getting an annoying amount of pop/ups for Winfixer, and WinAntispyware advertisements while surfing the web, but I haven't had it as a browser hijacker. Everytime I delete it from my registry site list it returns. I'm just wondering if what can i do to permanently get rid of this annoying pest. I have run adaware, spybot, spysubtract, AVG, Norton and nothing seems to get rid if this. Can someone run me though detailed steps or excellent free programs that will terminate this forever

I sometimes get a partial lock up. I can move my cursor around the screen but right or left clicking does nothing. No error messages get displayed, If I go to task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) I show 2 instances of "drwtsn32.exe". If I select "End Process" on them they close and everything works fine. 2. My computer is refreshing itself on its own. I will be using the PC and the desktop will change. All the Icons will disappear but not the desktop picture and then reappear. The task bar will also reset itself during this process.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got xp without sp's. Went to run windows update. It started it's download, I believe installing sp2. About 3/4's of the way through it locked up. The computer was froze. I ctr-alt-del to get task manager but nothing happened. So I waited awhile longer and still nothing. So I rebooted the comp. Now everytime I go to windows update through help & support or through mc's site, even just clicking on the link windows update help at mc's site locks up the computer. I have to end task to get the comp running again. I've searched high and low over the internet for the answer, ran spybot, virus scan, and even reloaded xp. Which when i did that and it asked for registration info i filled it out and sent it and it too locked up the comp.

I've entered my Domain username and password so that everytime when the PC
boots up it will automatically log me on. The problem that i'm having is that
if there's a power failure and the PC boots up when i'm not there , others
will have access to my files and folders. Is there any way to automatically
lock the PC after the logon process.
For the past few days, I have had my xp lock up showing the classic logon popup window; within every 5 mins or so.It is driving me crazy! It is NOT my screen saver settings, as I do not use that, and have checked to be sure it is NOT ON.It is more like someone is hitting the win logo key + L every 5 mins or so. Only difference is that if "I" hit the win logo key + L ,it will lock my system up and bring me to my "welcome" logon screen. This is happening much the same way, except the "classic" logon popup window comes up when my system locks; I have not changed my logon from the "welcome" screen, and I am NOT hitting the win logo + L keys. I have had to remove my logon password so I can just hit the enter button to get back to what I was doing each time this happens.Every 5 mins I am idle, so I can't sit here to read without this happening, or view any videos either. I have to be physically keyboarding to not have this occurr.I have searched all over to figure out how to disable it, but to no avail.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running an AD site with XP clients, I locked the screen on one of my machines using ctrl-alt-del > Lock Computer. On my return, the username and password boxes were greyed out.
I could still click the dropdown to choose between domains but couldnt enter a username and password so had to hard reboot the machine
Each time I turn on my computer and as it is boots up it will delay for a time with a line that reads something like Automatic IDE Configuration and then a message that my date and time are incorrect. The date goes back to Nov. 2003. Once I correct the date, time and year things seem to perform ok.

I have a Dell 8300, now all of a sudden when I click on Drive C it shows that I only have 24% unused space on my hard drive. It has been defragged and I know it shouldn't be showing that full.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIf I use any program other than windows explorer to check my HD space, it says about 20 gigs left, windows right now says 0kb on both c, d and e partitions. I run off e at the moment.A few days ago I deleted lots of files and just made a huge 15 gig txt file because I was bored... then I deleted the txt file and the space didnt change (I made sure it was deleted, I know the recycle bin doesnt do its job) and as the space didnt change I used a program called Rollback RX to rollback my HD to a few days ago. so I got my deleted files back (from before the txt file) and checked windows says I am running out of space.

We have to manually turn the computer off and back on and it takes several minutes before it comes to the main screen. I did a system restore, turned off the screensaver, ran a virus check with Norton 2004, and it is still occuring and has hung up 5 times today. We do not have internet access to this computer, so I do not think there is a virus on it.

If I try to open it up in safe mode via msconfig from run, it just restarts the computer in normal mode. If I try F8, same thing.I get a "your system has recovered from a seriour error" every time the computer restarts. When I dig for details on the error, this is what it says.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer has run totaly perfect until 1 day ago, i left it on overnight to download some stuff, in the morning i turned the screen on and it was frozen, i thought that was weird, so i restarted it, about 2 minutes after it was booted i started connecting to the internet, right when i was typing in the webpage, BAM, frozen again, i was starting to get pissed. To make a long story short, it now freezes EVERY time i turn it on, sometimes its within 30 seconds and i cant even open a program, other times its 10 minutes and it freezes. I dont think its the memory because i just got the new ram about 3 months ago from Mushkin, after i returned a already friend RAM stick and they sent me a fresh one back, and like i said it worked flawlessly and i didnt touch anything, just woke up and turned it on and its all of a sudden got a mind of its own, can anyone help? thanks. I also looked in the BIOS and nothing has changed since like 6 months ago when i built it, im clueless to why it all of a sudden locks up.
