Proper Method For Backups
Aug 16, 2005
I am having to set up a computer for a friend of mind and we are having a disagreement on the proper method of backing up information on a hard drive. His system has a Maxtor USB hard drive for backing up the hard drive. He keeps saying he needs a complete system back. I point out that if the entire system is backup on a schedule you are backing up problems as you go. I told him the data is what needs to be backed up (along with the original installation before the data was added. But I am not sure .what is the perferred method for backing up a system?

In the PROPERTIES page of all the drives on my computer, in the TOOLS page there is a box asking if I want to backup the computer. I'd like know the procedure to do this BEFORE I do it.When I bought the computer, I was instructed to make 5 CDs or 1 DVD for Backup discs. Is this the same thing? Of course, there is much more information and/or files on my computer now. Is it just a matter of copying everything on my computer? What files are essential to backup?

If when you have installed XP along with all drivers, office and updates you make a back up image like ghost, of your system at that point, can this be used as a permanent reinstall if you were unlucky anouth to get hit by a virus or have a corrupted OS, or is it a stop gap until you can reformat and reinstall with a xp disc, and what happens to the data you back up over.

I am using a video production system that a great deal of RAM, sometimes over a gigabite at a time. To accommodate this need, I am trying to eliminate as
much resident memory as possible. Since I turn off all internet connections at such times, any Windows-based files relating to internet work can be eliminated Indeed, I have found that even explorer can be removed and I can use task manager to start the program. Can anyone tell me what Windows files are essential for proper functioning when off line?

Just upgraded 128 mg (which showed as 112 in System) with additional 512 slot. This shows as 608. Is there a way to force XP to read the actual amount of installed ram just once before it allocates it to vir mem? Not vital. Just curious.Getting to know xp.

I recently reinstalled the Home Edition and now after rebooting the computer goes directly to the Home Edition. I changed the boot file too. When I boot up I get the two options, but when I log in to the Professional Edition I get an error. I suppose that the way I name the Professional Edition is not okay.If it is the problem, where can I find the proper name of the Professional Edition installed in my computer.

My question: What is the best way create another partition and format the remainder of my HD? I have the retail WINXP CD (non SP2). When doing a fresh installation, I created a 50 GB partition on my new 300 GB Seagate HD. As you know, the "non SP2" CD does not allow the installer to recognize the full 300 GB at installation. So basically, I have (1) active 50 GB partition with XP installed on it. The remaining 250 GB is open and empty. I finally have the computer running; installed SP2, drivers, etc. How can I properly access the rest of the drive to create several more partitions and format?

I recently used the XP backup utility and I found that it worked fine for an immediate backup to my external USB drive but when I attempt to schedule the backup, it fails to occur.I am performing a 'normal' backup to the USB Drive and I scheduled it daily using the wizard. It appears in the calendar and looks normal and consistent with my setup but nothing happens at the appointed time. I confirmed my PC date and time were correct (no AM/PM or date error).I see no indication that it is/has attempting to perform a backup.

In my Windows directory,I have a number of files such as $NtUninstalkB.They are at the top of the directory and in blue.I'm guessing these were uninstall options for the various updates downloaded/installed after reinstalling XP.Is there a script to delete them enmass? I didn't seem to see anything in Kelly's Korner that applied to this issue.Should I delete them at all? Do I just delete them one at a time?

I started the process of conversion to NTFS from FAT32 and I got a response that included: This conversion will also remove your previous operating system backup. Then: Convert may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID (their caps). Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? What are opened handles? What happens when they are invalid?
And how do I find my backup(s)? I have a folder on my desktop Created Oct.29, 2006 that is faded and labeled _RESTORE. Properties shows that it is 1.21GB and has 951 files that are marked Read-only and Hidden but when I open the folder it shows only 4 files of 64KB dated 2002 and 2004. Is that folder related to backups?I want to create a current backup or restore point but I have only 5.15GB left free. Help, please.

My Toshiba Satellite 1905-303 laptop gave out a year or so ago & we bought a replacement desk top. I've since re-formatted the drive which worked fine as a filestore using a caddy with usb cord. However, I've now discovered some original Toshiba XP recovery disks that came with the machine & a CDROM of a reinstallbackups directory that was done fairly close to when it ceased to work. The disk doesn't seem to function in the laptop when I refit it, so I can't get anything on the screen. Can I recover the disk using a separate machine so that I can then refit it & get XP up & running on it, & if so how?

Under Windows 9x and ME, backing up the entire Windows Registry was a relatively simple task for which many free tools were available. PCMag had one called SaveReg2, a simple batch file that would back up the Win9x/ME registry (User.dat and System.dat) and save any quantity I liked and delete the oldest ones as it progressed. The Windows 2000/XP Registries aren't that simple and I see no automated schedulers for backing up just the Registry--the whole registry.I want a tool that will save the entire Registry on a schedule each day or once a week or month, depending on user preferences, save a user-specifiable quantity and, delete the oldest ones when that quantity is reached. With spyware and adware becoming difficult-to-impossible to remove and as destructive to the OS as it has become, this seems an indespensible tool--if it is available anywhere.

Some times it will take 30 seconds to a minute to start after I click on it.2nd issue is this Occasionally I will come into my computer after not using it for 8-10 hours or so and I will have a ton (sometimes 40+) Error messages that say "unable to launch restart.exe".I can close all of them but then the computer runs like a tank. I always have to do a hard shut down after this too.It will NOT restart using the proper methods just hangs up.

I recently re-installed win. xp on the dell insperation 2400. Everything went find except the resoluton wouldn't change from the 480 x ...so I tried to set up my dial up but I needed a higher resolution. I did finally find a way to get that although it was very poor quality and I figured that I'd be able to down load the proper driver once on line, which I did do, although I'm not sure it was the right one, as dell doesn't seem to have anything for that model of pc. Anyway I also downloaded the Microsoft updates to get back to current for the secruity stuff. When that was done it required restart, which I did. When it restarted the monitor remained blank after the win. xp part was done loading. I know its on and that my pc is sitting there running, but I can't see anything. I restarted using F5 and tried; last known good configuration, vga mode, and safe mode. In the 1st 2 no monitor. In safemode the whole screen filled with a dos like line repeated over again to fill the whole screen, then a message came on that said, "stop!!! fatal error and I can't remember what else. Can you help? I guess I should mention that I don't have the right driver disk that came with the pc.

I have been using an XP machine for 3 years now. I have always used the character map to use special characters such as the squared symbol in almost every application that accepts input, i.e, notepad, wordpad, OutLook Xpress and many others. Up until about a week ago, I have not been able to key in the ubiquitous alt+0178 to get the character I want. It comes out as another character or just a bunch of dots. I have not; to he best of my knowledge, changend anything, ans also it is my production machine, so there are no others or kids on it at all. However, I am able to open character map and selcet, copy and paste it into my document. Way too many steps obviously.

I had done a couple of reboots yesterday to install a couple of USB devices and then needed to uninstall a printer and then reinstall it. I did another reboot and my XP Pro system with an Intel Dual core 2.4 Ghz machine only displays the first DOS screen, the one with the F button functions at the bottom of the screen. No matter which F buttons I try, it will not show me a boot screen or anything else. I just sits there and is frozen. I even tried rebooting with my XP CD in the drive and it wouldn't recognize or react to that either. What could have gone wrong? More importantly what other emergency boot methods are available?

I'm wondering if you guys have any experience with programs that allow remote control of another computer on the same network at you.
You see, I'm planning on having a dedicated NT 4.0 box sitting in a corner without a monitor or keyboard attached to it. But I still want to be able to control that computer without hooking up all those things.
I've heard of a program called VNC that allows remote control, but I've never used it or heard anything about it.
So please, can you guys suggest some (free, if possible) programs that allow this and that you would recommend?

My three PCs run XP Pro with all patches. I am going to give a try to making some registry changes to tweak some things. Other than making a restore point, what is the best simple method to back up the registry, and be 99.999999999 % confident that you will be able to restore it should things go down the tubes. I would like to have a redundant backup in some method other than a restore point.
