If I install Vista RC1 it will create a dual boot system. I want to create a separate partition for the Vista which is no problem. When and if it comes time to uninstall Vista. What is the best way to do this? How do I go back and get that partition that was created as part of my original partition and how do I get the master boot record back to the original single boot Windows XP?
View 1 RepliesMy friends XP crashed so I leant them my recovery disc (my old pc had XP this one has vista), when the xp recovery disc didn't work for them, they used my Acer Vista one which has half or more loaded vista and stalled probably because the lap top is to old to handle it. Anyway there is a blue Acer loading screen doing nothing and the vista programs run behind it which makes it difficult to see what you're doing. They brought it around to me as I can use this pc to see what I'm doing and try and fix there's more or less by feel, if that makes sense. They tried reinstalling my xp disc but vista seems to super seed it and it wont take, which doesn't surprise me.

Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista
Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:?
Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation?

I have been using an XP machine for 3 years now. I have always used the character map to use special characters such as the squared symbol in almost every application that accepts input, i.e, notepad, wordpad, OutLook Xpress and many others. Up until about a week ago, I have not been able to key in the ubiquitous alt+0178 to get the character I want. It comes out as another character or just a bunch of dots. I have not; to he best of my knowledge, changend anything, ans also it is my production machine, so there are no others or kids on it at all. However, I am able to open character map and selcet, copy and paste it into my document. Way too many steps obviously.

His system has a Maxtor USB hard drive for backing up the hard drive. He keeps saying he needs a complete system back. I point out that if the entire system is backup on a schedule you are backing up problems as you go. I told him the data is what needs to be backed up (along with the original installation before the data was added. But I am not sure .what is the perferred method for backing up a system?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had done a couple of reboots yesterday to install a couple of USB devices and then needed to uninstall a printer and then reinstall it. I did another reboot and my XP Pro system with an Intel Dual core 2.4 Ghz machine only displays the first DOS screen, the one with the F button functions at the bottom of the screen. No matter which F buttons I try, it will not show me a boot screen or anything else. I just sits there and is frozen. I even tried rebooting with my XP CD in the drive and it wouldn't recognize or react to that either. What could have gone wrong? More importantly what other emergency boot methods are available?

Anyhoo, He doesnt have Windows Recovery disk, but he does have a priated version of WindowsXP. My question is, say his OS had to be reinstalled could he use a program like Jelly Bean and get the key from his current system, write it down and use it when he reloads windows with this priated copy? The computer just booted all the way to my desktop without any intermediate steps. Now I have to select a user at an intermediate step. I'm the only user and am not on a network. After it finishes the initial installation and restarts it says to press any key to boot from the CD. I wait without pressing anything and than it says that there was an error reading the disk. If I remember correctly, after it restarts it goes strait into windows setup. This happens every time I try restarting, but I can get back into vista by putting the hard drive to boot first. The hardware is very dated (about 6yrs, AMD 1800+, AGP 2, PC2100 ram) and I want to upgrade to new stuff. So being a good citizen I called Microsoft and ask the question, "How do I legally install the legal copy on my new equipment while uninstalling it from the old?" The old hardware is not going to be reused, just to old and slow. Two reps from M$ told me that I could not use my legal copy with the new hardware while one said that I could but had to uninstall it somehow while online so they could verify and activate it for the new stuff. They never got around to telling me how to do that. I take that as a no that they won't allow the 2nd use. So what OS would you choose at the moment? I think I am going to try to reuse the current copy. If that doesn't work I'll repurchase, but which? XP Pro, XP Home, XP 64, Vista, Vista home, Vista 64? I understand that SP1 for Vista has gone into beta so it shouldn't be long to get that. If anyone has some input or experience I would greatly apperciate it. Does anyone think that this is wrong? I'm not trying to cheat M$, as I said it is a legal copy. Any Microsoft employees out there? If I want to reuse a piece of hardware no prob right? Seems to me to be the same thing. Ok well i have 3 days left of my computer (windows xp home edition) due to the fact that i recovered it too many times and used up the serial number, and it costs $100-$200 for a new serial. So should i just get vista or should i just get the new serial?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed the SP3 today and have been kicking myself since then. I didn't even follow advice I was giving others to wait. I set a restore point before I installed it and went into Safe Mode to restore to that setting. When I checked on my Add/Remove Programs file it states the SP3 Cannot be Removed. I have read here in a few threads that some people have uninstalled it. I don't know of anyother way other than AddRemove programs. I hope I don't have to reformat. What happened was that my computer would start to boot up and hang, then I got it to boot up as far as desktopand then it will just hang.
