i cannot delete a file on my desktop (windows xp). delete will not work. usual windows message, file in use, cannot delete, blah, blah, etc. what methods has the fourm found to be effective?
View 1 RepliesI read the advice to start in safe mode to delete files that gave the errror message cannot delet file - source file not found. They wouldn't delete in Safe Mode either. I am trying to delete mp3 from my c drive because I have an external disk where I have my music library. I can delete them one at a time without getting the error message but not a bunch of them. Some of them I have been able to delete in a bunch.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a file on my Desktop which I can't delete. It was a file downloaded from a popular video site using a download program. This program delivers the files that initially have no extensions. You then choose what format (ie. wmv, avi, etc) that you want your video file in. The program then creates a converted file with the extension you have selected. So you finally end up with two files. The orignal file with no extension, and the file that you have converted. Lastly you delete the original downloaded file that has no extension. This has worked fine countless times. But some sort of glitch occured with one of these files a while back. I was able to create the converted file without a problem, but I can't delete the original extensionless file. Whenever I try to delete it, I get a message that the file can't be read. So I seem to have a permanent unwanted file on my Desktop. Can somebody please tell my how I can get rid of it.

I copied the files over from the cd to my computer to install the game because my cd-rom drive gets a little funky when i try to install things from it. So I put all the files in a folder on my desktop titled "BF2" The game was freezing up when i tried to loap a map so i decided to delete it. I uninstalled the game, deleted all the existing registry entries for the game and deleted the files in the BF2 folder (BF2 CD) but one file did not delete. The file is called "setup.ibt" I don't know why it won't delete it says "This file is being used by another person or program."

I can't move it or delete it because it says it is in use by other programs, and when I double-click it, it says it is not a valid win32 application. It won't even delete in safe-mode. Any ideas?

My question is if the thief ever tries to update the software through MS update, can he be tracked? I have not been successful in getting quick answers from MS, but I only tried contacting them yesterday afternoon. I had the system configured for update to contact the site automatically. Unfortunately, I had the administrator functions and password access turned off, so whoever stole it can use it.To track the thief through the software id and the net? The cops obviously have better things to do than chase this down. I did turn in the serial numbers and whatnot to the cops, and they say they case the pawn shops and whatnot weekly.

I have re-installed my Adobe programs. I have tried using the Office disks to repair. I have also gone to the MVP forum and followed the directions there, to no avail.System Restore was turned off, so that is not an option. (not sure why that was off - must have happened when my computer was at the repair person's office)
I'm battling spyware removal at the moment (aurora) and somehow my win xp sp2 search function no longer works. i get an error "A File That Is Required to Run Search Companion Cannot Be Found" you may need to run setup I went to the microsoft website and downloaded the hotfix, however it doesn't work with sp2! anybody know how to fix this? I checked and i do have the srchasst folder in windows.

I am not sure how far the direcroty goes, but I have counted to at least 26 directories deep. I cannot delete the parent folder in either explorer, or from the prompt. At the prompt I have tried RD foldername and it says, "Folder not empty". Tried del foldername*.* with no error and still cannot delete it.

The files and folders that I am addressing are: C:WINDOWSTEMP*.* *.OLD *.CHK *.BAK ~*.* _*.* and MSCREATE.DIRI have managed to clean all but one, which is _*.* When I run the search, I get the result of 144 files. I click on edit, select all, then file, delete. I receive the following error "cannot delete file: Cannot read the source file or disk" (please view screen shot). When I right click, I have no delete option, just "open containing folder, copy, and extract. (please view screen shot). I have run AdAware, Spybot, Ewido, and Avg Free. I also have CCleaner, Easy Clean which I have run. I have also used "Move On Boot" by putting the file path in the MOB window and try to have MOB delete the file. MOB says the file will be removed on the next boot.

I cant deleted this file on my desktop. It is an empty file(0 bytes), I tried renaming it and tried deleting it in safe mode. still I get " Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk." I did a search for the file and nothing shows! not even the actual file that is on my desktop. So used "registry cleaner" to see if it will delete it...nope. I tried safe mode again and the same problem. I ran AVG, Norton, Escan, Hijack, all came clean. nothing wrong.

I tried messing with msconfig and doing system restore to the last working configuration and it didnt work. I tried creating a new windows user acct it didnt work either.
