Microsoft Configuration Finding Solution
May 16, 2005I have a question about Microsoft Configuration. First off, it's not there. I go to start > run > msconfig and get this: Quote: Windows cannot find Microsoft Configuration. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. I search for it and I find it, but run won't find it.I don't really want to have to put a shortcut to it on the desktop because my friends are idiots.

Mar 9, 2007He recently bought a Dell XPS 410 that has WindowsXP on it. He bought it right before the change over to Vista. Anyhoo, He doesnt have Windows Recovery disk, but he does have a priated version of WindowsXP. My question is, say his OS had to be reinstalled could he use a program like Jelly Bean and get the key from his current system, write it down and use it when he reloads windows with this priated copy? Would Microsoft recognize it as being genuine? I told him he shouldnt be using the pirated copy, and just go out and buy the Vista.

I alway zero in on Startup check or unch0eck something and leave it at that.Tonight I noticed a tab marked "service" and investigated. There are lots of entries, all checked off, and many of them refer to programs long since deleted. What are these entries, can I uncheck some of tjhem, eg the ones belonging to programs long ago deleted? And most important why is this section separated from startup?

Feb 25, 2005I am currently using windows xp on my computer. I tried to speed up the computer by making some changes in msconfig. I went to selective startup and unchecked some boxes in startup. The changes didn't make a difference after I restarted the computer. I clicked on diagnostic startup by accident, so I then clicked normal startup and restarted my computer. Now help & support will not work. It keeps saying that windows can not start help and support due to system files not running. I also can not log onto the internet. It says aol must download files first before you can access. I hit yes and nothing happens. I tried to run error checking and it won't let me because it says there are some things not running. I also went into system information and checked the hard drive and it says that it failed. How I can fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Character Map Not Working With Alt+172 Method
Feb 26, 2007I have been using an XP machine for 3 years now. I have always used the character map to use special characters such as the squared symbol in almost every application that accepts input, i.e, notepad, wordpad, OutLook Xpress and many others. Up until about a week ago, I have not been able to key in the ubiquitous alt+0178 to get the character I want. It comes out as another character or just a bunch of dots. I have not; to he best of my knowledge, changend anything, ans also it is my production machine, so there are no others or kids on it at all. However, I am able to open character map and selcet, copy and paste it into my document. Way too many steps obviously.

His system has a Maxtor USB hard drive for backing up the hard drive. He keeps saying he needs a complete system back. I point out that if the entire system is backup on a schedule you are backing up problems as you go. Jul 21, 2007I had done a couple of reboots yesterday to install a couple of USB devices and then needed to uninstall a printer and then reinstall it. I did another reboot and my XP Pro system with an Intel Dual core 2.4 Ghz machine only displays the first DOS screen, the one with the F button functions at the bottom of the screen. No matter which F buttons I try, it will not show me a boot screen or anything else. I just sits there and is frozen. I even tried rebooting with my XP CD in the drive and it wouldn't recognize or react to that either. What could have gone wrong? More importantly what other emergency boot methods are available?

Well i only have one user, never had another user created until recently (temporary fix) is there anything i can do, the main user is called the owner, it says its the computer admin, but i guess there is still an admin user, i cant get to that. the only way i can get ms office to work was to create a new user, open all the office programs, export the office registry, and import it to my main user, thats the only thing that works, for a little bit.

Then after a while I turned it back on, but it said restarting set up and asked for the installation CD. I put it in and Windows installed, but my documents was all gone to about four months worth.

Mar 19, 2005I am living in a shared residence and the guys here are running wireless adsl. It is an infrastructure network using 128bit WEP encryption. I'm not sure about their hardware but I am using an asus 54mbps usb stick. I have no problmes logging on but for some reason the wireless config. program automatically checks the "the key is provided for me automatically" option in the network properties. Now this prevents me from getting access to the network after any sort of disconnection. If I uncheck this box the stars in the key field (representing the WEP key) dissappear and so the key needs to be reentered. It only does this some times and since I don't have a copy of the key (the network administrator enters it on my computer) every couple of days I need to get the key re-entered on my computer. It is a real hassle and I can't work out why windows keeps defaulting to this option of having the key provided automatically.
