I recently reinstalled the Home Edition and now after rebooting the computer goes directly to the Home Edition. I changed the boot file too. When I boot up I get the two options, but when I log in to the Professional Edition I get an error. I suppose that the way I name the Professional Edition is not okay.If it is the problem, where can I find the proper name of the Professional Edition installed in my computer.

1st I use internet explorer for my web browser. At work when I click on it it pops right up with out even thinking about it Page loads with in 10 seconds every time. At home. Some times it will take 30 seconds to a minute to start after I click on it.2nd issue is this Occasionally I will come into my computer after not using it for 8-10 hours or so and I will have a ton (sometimes 40+) Error messages that say "unable to launch restart.exe".I can close all of them but then the computer runs like a tank. I always have to do a hard shut down after this too.It will NOT restart using the proper methods just hangs up.

I am having to set up a computer for a friend of mind and we are having a disagreement on the proper method of backing up information on a hard drive. His system has a Maxtor USB hard drive for backing up the hard drive. He keeps saying he needs a complete system back. I point out that if the entire system is backup on a schedule you are backing up problems as you go. I told him the data is what needs to be backed up (along with the original installation before the data was added. But I am not sure .what is the perferred method for backing up a system?

I am using a video production system that a great deal of RAM, sometimes over a gigabite at a time. To accommodate this need, I am trying to eliminate as
much resident memory as possible. Since I turn off all internet connections at such times, any Windows-based files relating to internet work can be eliminated Indeed, I have found that even explorer can be removed and I can use task manager to start the program. Can anyone tell me what Windows files are essential for proper functioning when off line?

Just upgraded 128 mg (which showed as 112 in System) with additional 512 slot. This shows as 608. Is there a way to force XP to read the actual amount of installed ram just once before it allocates it to vir mem? Not vital. Just curious.Getting to know xp.

My question: What is the best way create another partition and format the remainder of my HD? I have the retail WINXP CD (non SP2). When doing a fresh installation, I created a 50 GB partition on my new 300 GB Seagate HD. As you know, the "non SP2" CD does not allow the installer to recognize the full 300 GB at installation. So basically, I have (1) active 50 GB partition with XP installed on it. The remaining 250 GB is open and empty. I finally have the computer running; installed SP2, drivers, etc. How can I properly access the rest of the drive to create several more partitions and format?

I decided to use a computer at an Elementary school I work at in Japan. I switched it on and then checked my email and surfed the web. I decided to shut down the computer after I finished. The next day a teacher says do not shut down the computer because last night teachers could not use the computer. Is this just a security reason once you shut down you can't use the computer again for that day? I always thought it was simply reenter the password and reconnect to the internet again to use the computer again.

Every now and then when starting my pc (WinXP), it seems to enter a hanging mode. I know when the problem is occurring because the sound card icon doesn't show on the task bar.I don't know if all programs are non-functioning, but the internet connection and the sound card are not only when this occurs. The main problem: the pc will not shutdown. Bringing up the task manager won't work either, leaving me no choice but to shut off the pc via surge switch. What can cause this problem?

When I go to the start button and go to the turn off computer option, the computer freezes. Then when I shut down by going to windows task manager, after everything closes and goes to the screen "windows is now shutting down", it never shuts down. The computer just stays on that screen forever, and then I have to shut off the computer with the power button.

I recently re-installed win. xp on the dell insperation 2400. Everything went find except the resoluton wouldn't change from the 480 x ...so I tried to set up my dial up but I needed a higher resolution. I did finally find a way to get that although it was very poor quality and I figured that I'd be able to down load the proper driver once on line, which I did do, although I'm not sure it was the right one, as dell doesn't seem to have anything for that model of pc. Anyway I also downloaded the Microsoft updates to get back to current for the secruity stuff. When that was done it required restart, which I did. When it restarted the monitor remained blank after the win. xp part was done loading. I know its on and that my pc is sitting there running, but I can't see anything. I restarted using F5 and tried; last known good configuration, vga mode, and safe mode. In the 1st 2 no monitor. In safemode the whole screen filled with a dos like line repeated over again to fill the whole screen, then a message came on that said, "stop!!! fatal error and I can't remember what else. Can you help? I guess I should mention that I don't have the right driver disk that came with the pc.

I've had a problem with my computer; in the past, almost every time I turned off the computer and rebooted, I would have to enter safe mode and then switch to regular mode, so I generally kept the computer on. After a longer than normal power outage, my computer doesn't reboot anymore. When I push the power button, it begins to boot and then shuts down. The computer in question has an amd 1,1 ghz athlon, 1 agp video card, 1 pci dual monitor video card (I run 3 monitors), a dvd drive, a cd-rw drive, a 3.5" floppy drive, a soundblaster card, 56k modem, 40 gig hd and an ethernet card for dsl.I'm running xp home edition with sp2. I tried unplugging various cards and drives, but it still will not boot.

I'm running Windows XP home sp2 on a WD Raptor hooked to a Gigabyte 7NNXP mobo inside a Lian Li tower. I have all the latest drivers, BIOS updates and Windows updates. The problem is that when turning off the computer from Windows it continues to run, (Windows shuts down but power light is on and fans are running). At this point I used to be able to turn it off by pressing the power button [Instant off set in BIOS]. Then that stopped working and I tried the four second delay after pressing power button option in BIOS and that is working but I'm afraid something is not right and continuing without isolating the problem will result in broken computer.

It restarts more often than stays of.Usually (9 out of 10) if I flick on the power switch of the volt regulator, the Computer Starts before I press the start button.

I have windows xp home edition oem version on compaq presario desk top with sp 2. When I try to shut down and it gets to the "windows is shutting down" it just stays there until I turn computer off with switch. I only use that computer occasionally as a back-up but would really like to fix it. The bios was last updated in 2004 and the power settings of bios are set to default so I believe it is a windows problem. The computer is loaded with pre-installed junk software from a recent restore using the restore cd. I am also open for suggestions on how to uninstall all the junk without causing other problems with the oem windows xp. The computer has 2.8 celeron and 500 mb memory. I would greatly appreciate any help

This system, for whatever reason, is having some weird issues.
1. Applications keep shutting down
2. The computer randomly shuts off
3. Computer screen will go black, and the cursor will turn into a larger cursor like the cursor looks like when it is in safe mode, and I won't even be able to move the cursor; the fans also started kicking in when it did this as if it were starting to work really hard (only did this once).I've scanned for viruses and spyware. It was relatively clean. Then I did a sfc /scannow. Seemed to work for a while, but now it's acting weird again.

I run Windows XP had to recently restore my laptop.Things are getting back to "normal" except that now when I click on the "start" button and then "turn off computer"I have to wait about 4-5 minutes while the hour glass icon spins before I get the "log off, shutdown, restart" menu. Once this appears and I select "shutdown" everything goes okay and shuts down pretty fast. What might be causing this long delay?

I am using XP SP3, Comodo, Avast,Spywareblaster. (AMD Athlond 2600+). When the PC has been on a while, i press Start, Turn Off computer, the dialogue box does not appear and the hourglass symbol appears, I can still access Task Manager, the graph still unfolds and the CPU usage shows 1 or 2 %. After several minutes there is a beep from the pc, and the dialogue box opens, but if I press it, it starts the process again. I have to press the on/off button to shut down. Does not seem to happen if the pc has only been on a few moments.
