Recovery Screen Pops Up On Boot (Windows 8)

Jan 3, 2014

When I power on my computer (toshibba satellite) it comes to a screen that says RECOVERY: you need to use installation media. And I never thought of it to make a recovery disks. It is windows 8 and only a year old. Windows 8 actually cost more than this computer. Both toshiba and windows didn't know what it was doing. The screen has three options Press Enter for restart(tried it) Press F8 for boot options(didnt work) Press (I forget) for UEDI menu. (Something like that) I really need this computer because I edit videos and clips. I have a backup which is running windows xp but it's outdated and can't get Sony Vegas for it. I think on my broken computer a virus deleted my operating system.

8.1 Update - Won't Boot Past BIOS / All Recovery Media Black Screen With Mouse

Jun 2, 2014

I tried updating to Windows 8.1 Update 1 and in didn't go through properly (it hard froze and crashed) and now won't boot past the BIOS. I cannot get into Windows and I cannot get into the Recovery Menu.

I tried recovery USB's and any I create either from a 3rd party or Windows itself results in loading to a black screen with a mouse cursor. Only one worked, Acronis (probably because its Linux) and it showed all the drives ruling out a hardware issue but sadly it cannot repair Windows.

So it seems I might be a victim of the black screen issue some had when moving to Update 1.... BUT the difference is I cannot boot into the recovery menu at all and any recovery media boots to a black screen.

How to get out of this screen and actually boot into anything which will allow me to try to fix the MBR or go back to a restore point.

I thought the point of recovery software was that it loads no matter how corrupted Windows is... obviously not! Something is stopping all of them booting properly.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 Password Recovery - Can't Boot From DVD

Oct 4, 2013

It's too late for me to return the computer so I want to be able to use it, unfortunately I don't know his password and there's no chance he will tell me. I can't reset the password because it's linked to his email that I don't have access to.

So doing some research online I found some programs to recover the password that I could burn onto a disc and then boot from the disc. The problem is despite changing the boot order in the BIOS to but from CD/DVD (in my case I'm using a DVD), it doesn't boot from it and eventually just goes to the password login for Windows.

I disabled Secure Boot, I didn't have anything called Legacy Boot to enable, but I did disable something called Boot Quiet Mode, and once I did that when I first start the computer instead of getting a Gateway logo I get the Windows logo. I've searched the BIOS and can't find any other type of boot option.

I figure if I could get the darn thing to boot from disc I could try one of the many programs for password recovery but I can't get that far.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 Failed To Boot - Going Into Automatic Recovery Mode

Mar 24, 2014

I have a Lenovo G580 laptop 2gb RAM, i5, and 500gb HDD. It had windows 8 RTM 32 bit installed on its C drive. It had come with DOS preinstalled so I had to do a fresh install of windows 8 via bootable usb. It worked well for few months but now it refuses to boot and goes into "automatic recovery mode" and then it says that your pc needs to be repaired with a recovery disc.

I did not made any recovery disc when it was working so I tried to do a fresh install of win 8 and then win 7 via bootable usb, but both have failed. The screen freezes after blue logo of windows appears and then it restarts saying it has encountered an error and needs to be restarted.

I have tried booting it in safe mode along with all other options on start-up menu but it doesn't work.

After Choose Windows 8 It Goes To Blue Recovery Screen

Jan 16, 2013

Dual booting Win 7 and Win 8. Win 7 is C: Primary installed first, Win 8 is installed to a primary partition (25GB). I get the blue recovery screen after starting Win 8 from bootloader menu. Win 7 starts fine. I have installed Win 8 on another computer using the same flash so I know the flash is good. First I defraged and cleaned out C: then created the partition. I have installed it on the computer before (preview edition) then removed it(formated D: partition), this is the RTM 9200 build. Did I mention that on the other computer when installed it asked for Key which I temporarily skipped, on this computer however when installed it did not ask for the key. Before the install I ran bootrec /fixmbr, /fixboot and also /rebuildbcd from Win 7 install disk.

I don't think it's a problem with the Win 7 boot loader. My guess is some registry value or other setting or file in Win 7 is preventing normal startup of Win 8. I do believe it's not hardware related. Any thoughts on what could cause this? Could it be the Win 8 bootloader now causing problems and if so how would I fix this issue? Do I need to fix bootloader in Win 8 and should I run the bootrec cmd's from the Win 8 flash this time? Not sure which has taking over now! I have searched in these forums and online for a couple of day's to no avail though references have been made that the Win 8 bootloader has now taken over, if so were does the now functioning bootloader reside - C: or D: (partition) and which one is it Win 7 or Win 8 loader?

Can't Boot To Win 8 Recovery Disk

Jan 8, 2014

I have (had) a dual boot with Windows 8.1 and win7 and I was using EasyBCD to edit the boot order. Now, when I try to reboot, I get a blue screen - saying 'RECOVERY - Your PC needs to be repaired'. I have a bootable USB recovery medium for win 8 but the problem is that I can't boot to it and fix the problem because I can't access the boot menu in my BIOS. The usual F12 option to select the boot device isn't showing up no matter what I do. I read that it has something to do with Windows 8's hybrid shutdown system. Is there any way to get out of this 'hybrid shutdown' so I can once again access the boot menu?

How To Boot To F11 Recovery Manager

Sep 17, 2014

My problem is that when i try to boot to F11 Recovery Manager i get the "error 0xc0000225" message.

Here is how my partitions look -As you can see i have the Recovery partition there, it is actually 17.5GB in actual size. Here is a what the Recovery (D) folder looks like -In the "HP Recovery Manager" it also says on the left "Disabled: Recovery partition is removed" but on the right side it actually allows me to remove it, which doesn't make sense, this image will show you what i mean -

I actually do have the Recovery Media on a USB in which i created from this very drive, i can boot the PC from the USB which then gives me options to factory restore etc.

The whole point is that i want this to work without reverting back to the recovery USB, is there any way at all to repair this?

Unable To Boot Into Recovery Disk

Anyway, I burned an iso for the Windows 8 recovery disk, and the disk is fine since it works on another computer. However, it doesn't work on the computer I want to use it on. The recovery disk says

Code: Loading files...

And completes a loading process. Then, blue squares go along the top of the screen. However, it suddenly turns off my computer in the middle of the process. I've tried this multiple times with the same result.

On Boot F11 Will Not Start Restore / Recovery

Nov 27, 2012

I made an installation error of an Exit shortcut and now it automatically begins a shutdown shortly after entering my password. I can get to the bios and diagnosis and Boot, but pressing F11 does nothing. Holding it down or tapping it makes no difference. Once I enter my password and the tiles appear the shutdown process beings anew.

How can I get to the restore function or to something where I can correct my stupid mistake? I do have an ISO DVD to fall back on.

Can't Boot To Any Recovery Disk - Infinite Crash Loop

Mar 20, 2013

I have a DV6T with Win 8 (Can't boot to any recovery disk; infinite crash loop - HP Support Forum - 2490191).

Windows told me that there was some corruption on the hard drive, and to reboot so it could solve the problem before losing any data.

Now I am in an infinite crash loop. It will try to boot windows, but just as soon as the first dot of the spinny wheel from the windows loading screen loads, it crashes. On the next boot, it said it's preparing to repair. Crashes again. Repeat...

I tried to boot into the HP recovery environment with F11. Looks like it just skips it and tries to boot Windows. Crashes.

I put in a Win 8 DVD, and try to boot off the DVD. I press a key at the "press any key to boot from DVD" prompt. I hear the DVD seek for a bit. Then it seems like it gives up and tries to boot Windows from the hard disk. Crashes.

I tried creating a Windows 8 recovery disk on USB from another Win 8 machine. Same drill.

I brought it into my office and tried a network boot to a recovery environment. I watched the loading bar, and when it reached the end, it crashed.

I'm stumped as to why it can't even boot to external media! The two things I've been able to boot into have been HP's onboard diagnostics (full, extended suite passed) and memtest86 (which passed).

Maintenance :: Boot Recovery CDs With UEFI - Macrium Reflect / Aomei

Jan 2, 2014

I'm just been playing with free backup tools; Macrium Reflect and Aomei Backupper, and working out which works best for me for those times when you need to boot from a Recovery CD.

I've been using a Toshiba PC which has 64-bit Windows 8 preinstalled, and is using a GPT file system. I changed the boot order so that the CD/DVD drive comes before the main HDD, if it finds a valid bootable source.

The BIOS options on the PC also include:

* Secure Boot: enabled or disabled
* Boot mode: UEFI or Legacy (CSM)

I tried both Secure Boot enabled and disabled; this didn't seem to affect the findings below.

However the differences some on switching between UEFI mode and Legacy mode in the BIOS settings.

My question was whether I can boot from a Recovery CD in UEFI Mode; although the PC can access bootable CDs in Legacy Mode, it won't boot itself.

Aomei Backupper 1.6

CD was created using the Windows PE option rather than Linux. By changing to Legacy boot mode, I can boot from the Aomei CD, and it then could backup my HDD to an external USB drive. But I had to change back to UEFI boot to make the computer boot again.

Macrium Reflect Free v5.2.6444 - 32-bit.

This is similar to Aomei. I selected the option to create a CD using Windows PE (version 4). By changing to Legacy boot mode, I can boot from the Macrium CD, and it then could backup to an external USB drive. But I had to change back to UEFI boot to make the computer boot again.

Macrium Reflect Free v5.2.6444 - 64-bit.

This works! I selected the option to create a CD using Windows PE (version 4), 64-bit this time. This creates a CD which will boot in UEFI mode. I think this is because it uses the 64-bit version of Windows PE 4 rather than 32-bit.

So on this basis, I prefer Macrium Reflect Free, because it creates a CD which I can boot in UEFI mode without needing to get into the BIOS settings. It also works in Secure Boot mode.

Although this particular Toshiba seems to allow me to get into the BIOS without too much trouble by repeatedly hitting the F2 key on startup, I know not all PCs are so easy and some times when you need a recovery CD, the PC may not be functioning well enough to let you get into the BIOS easily.

Dell :: Inspiron 3537 - Boot To Recovery UEFI BIOS

Apr 14, 2014

So, I got a Inspiron 3537 i5. Nice laptop for it's price. Downloaded all the manuals, made my recovery DVDs. All was well in my world.

First thing I noticed is that there is no info in the manuals for tweaking the BIOS and since it is my first experience with a UEFI bios I was a bit disappointed. Is there a manual available for it?

Next I upgraded ATI Drivers to 13.12. I am an old user who always knew that updates were usually a good thing to do. Got in the same problem as many others with PC screen not waking up from sleep.

Thought I would do a recovery from the disk, but after trying various combinations (Ctl+F11, F8, F12 etc) I couldn't find a way to boot in the Recovery console. I did the recovery from my DVD and the laptop works fine.

How to add in UEFI bios a boot option to the Recovery partition? I undersstand that I have to create a new boot option using "Add boot option" and the two options available are to boot to the 1st (windows EFI) or 2nd (recovery partition), but the path for the recovery efi file to be loaded is unknown (+ you can't have access to the recovery partition to see the contents of it from windows).

Setup Installation :: New MSata Install From Acer Recovery USB - In Bios No Boot

Jan 14, 2014

These are the steps I've taken-- OS Win 8, pre-installed by Acer.

1) Make recovery USB using the Acer recovery wizard, with the laptop in stock configuration.

2) Install msata as secondary drive

3) Go to Computer management and initialize the msata and format with GPT style. Format the drive, assign a drive letter. (I only see 1 partition). I did this as NTFS/default allocation size. Is this where I went wrong?

4) Remove the factory HDD (listed as HDD0 in BIOS)

5) Boot to BIOS
5a) in BIOS, disable secure boot.
5b) Go to legacy mode
5c) Set msata (HDD1 in BIOS) as #1 in boot order

6) boot to USB recovery drive, follow steps to restore from USB (clean install, make partitions as it wants)

7) remove USB, reboot.

Error message-- no bootable device. I can basically load the USB again or the BIOS.

Windows 8 Won't Boot - Blank Colored Screen

Oct 30, 2013

Windows 8 issue. I recently installed Windows 8.1 as a 2nd OS on my Windows 7 PC. I installed Windows 8.1 on a brand new Samsung A840 SSD, and am dual booting it with Windows 7 (installed on an entirely different drive). I am still using Win7 as my default.

The install went fine. After a few days, I attempted to boot into Windows 8 and after a few seconds of the initial logo loading screen, I was greeted with a blank, purple screen (the same color as my chosen color scheme). Rebooting into Windows 8 I was prompted to let Windows check the disk for continuity errors, but even after identifying and fixing errors Windows 8 just hangs on this blank screen.

I was able to boot into Safe Mode successfully. However, a normal boot always leads to the blank colored screen.

I used the troubleshooting options available by booting from the install disc - first refresh and then reset. Both ran successfully but did not fix the issue.

At this point I booted back into WIn7 and ran CrystalDisk. The SSD reports 'Good'.

The next step was deleting the Windows 8 partition, reformatting it, and reinstalling Windows 8. Windows 8 is on an 100GB simple volume and the rest of the SSD is unallocated. Again, the install went fine. After a few hours it crashed into an all green blank screen (I picked a different color this time). Now when I try to run "refresh" or "reset" from the DVD I get an error message that says "your computer could not be reset. No changes were made".

I will continue to use Win7 for 99% of my productivity/gaming/etc but I work at a college Support Desk so I'd like to think I can figure this out with a little collaboration. I don't have much Windows 8 experience but I'm seeing more and more customers all the time with Windows 8 laptops/tablets so I'd like to find out as much as I can.

I can't eliminate either the OS or the SSD as the problem.
