Setup Installation :: New MSata Install From Acer Recovery USB - In Bios No Boot

Jan 14, 2014

These are the steps I've taken-- OS Win 8, pre-installed by Acer.

1) Make recovery USB using the Acer recovery wizard, with the laptop in stock configuration.

2) Install msata as secondary drive

3) Go to Computer management and initialize the msata and format with GPT style. Format the drive, assign a drive letter. (I only see 1 partition). I did this as NTFS/default allocation size. Is this where I went wrong?

4) Remove the factory HDD (listed as HDD0 in BIOS)

5) Boot to BIOS
5a) in BIOS, disable secure boot.
5b) Go to legacy mode
5c) Set msata (HDD1 in BIOS) as #1 in boot order

6) boot to USB recovery drive, follow steps to restore from USB (clean install, make partitions as it wants)

7) remove USB, reboot.

Error message-- no bootable device. I can basically load the USB again or the BIOS.

Setup Installation :: Win 8 Install On SSD Connected To MSATA 7 Pin Adapter

Jun 12, 2013

mSATA to 7 pin adapter for SSD or HDD: mSATA to 7pin SATA Adapter

reviews on Amazon.com: Amazon.com: Micro SATA Cables - mSATA to 7pin SATA Adapter: Electronics

I ordered a Dell XPS 8500 Special Edition desktop with a 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate OS installed on a 500GB Samsung 840 SSD and a 3TB HDD for videos/music/documents/etc. I want to install Windows 8 so that it will be a dual boot system along with Windows 7. Each OS will be on a separate SSD. I have an empty mSATA port. So, I've ordered a mSATA to 7 pin adapter like above to connect a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD to and to install Windows 8 on it. I understand that this mSATA connector should make the 256GB SSD bootable.

The desktop comes with an OEM Windows 8 installation disk. I have a Windows 8 Pro upgrade disk. What would happen if I had to install Windows 8 a second time on the same SSD on the same desktop? I've read that the 8 Pro upgrade deletes the original OEM serial number. How would I install Win 8 again if I would need to for some reason? Would I have to purchase another edition of Win 8?

With the 3TB HDD, I would like to partition it so that both Win 7 and Win 8 can use it, but on separate partitions. How would I do this? Would it be like any partition? GTP?

Setup Installation :: Dual Boot Acer Aspire V5 With Windows 8.1 Pre-installed

Apr 14, 2014

I am using Windows 8.1. I have an Acer Aspire V5-571P computer with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. I want to install my licensed copy of Windows 7 Professional on it as a dual boot to dual boot Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. I have seen that it can be done, but I cannot figure out how to correctly do it. I have already had to re-install Windows 8.1 once from a USB Recovery drive which was not fun. So how to do it and get it done. I love windows 7 Pro but I can't figure out how to do it.

I have already turned off secure boot in bios. However, UEFI mode is still active vs legacy bios which is the other mode I have.

Setup Installation :: Acer XC600 - No UEFI Device In Boot Menu

Jul 21, 2013

I have a desktop PC Acer XC600, the hard disk is formatted in the UEFI-Scheme. Now I want to do a clean install of a fresh Windows 8, but I cannot manage to boot into UEFI-mode, neither from DVD or USB.

I can reach a boot menu by pressing F12, but there is nothing like shown in the article about installing Windows 8 in UEFI mode. Only standard bios devices show up. There are simply no UEFI devices. I tried different usb sticks, dvds, formatted them different ways, but the best I can get is the point where setup says "cannot install because the disk is formatted GPT".

But the acutal system is definitely running in UEFI mode (?)

Setup Installation :: ASUS M2N-E Won't Boot Win 8.1 After BIOS Update

Jul 2, 2014

It has an ASUS M2N-E motherboard with an old single core AMD Athlon 64 (I cannot remember which model specifically).

Last week, I provided him with a couple of old HDDs and 8GB worth PC-5300 DDR2 667 MHz RAM. We also installed Windows 8.1 64-bit, and other than the CPU being a single core and a bit slow, things were proceeding relatively smoothly.

He has an NVIDIA Geforce 8500 on the board, and he's ordered a PNY-made Geforce GTX 650 that's on it's way at present.

He's wanting to upgrade the CPU to the AMD PHENOM X4 9950, so we've been periodically meeting over the past couple of weeks to perform surgery on this old machine.

At any rate, we found that to update the CPU, we needed to update his BIOS from the one that was installed, which was at revision 0502. The needed BIOS revision for the CPU was 1504, but would also work with revision 1701.

After jumping through several hoops to update the BIOS, we updated it to 1701. However, since then the machine will not boot into Windows 8.1. He gets an instant BSOD. I did not see the error code, so I cannot say what it was. He told me that he's attempted to do a repair install to no avail. The repair attempt results in a constant loop of the machine rebooting and BSODing.

At any rate, here are some URLs that detail the board specs and the list of BIOS revisions for that board.

Motherboard Specs: Motherboards - M2N-E - ASUS
CPU Compatibility list: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- CPU Support M2N-E

Setup Installation :: Can't Enable Secure Boot On BIOS

Oct 11, 2013

I had a bit of a problem with Malware which led me to reinstall windows 8. I had also at the time been trying to install Linux to dual boot beside it. However, upon reinstalling I got the annoying watermark saying "Secureboot isn't configured correctly." Having decided I would rather remove the watermark and having gone back into the BIOS (with a reinstall) and trying to enable secure boot I get a message - "CSM is Loaded! Disable the CSM via Setup and repeat operation after Restart".

However there is, as far a I can see no option to disable the CSM in my bios - I've tried disabling anything related to Legacy and reinstalling both Ubuntu and Windows 8 as well as wiping the drive and jumping the CMOS as well as updating the BIOS.

I've tried every permutation in the BIOS. Could possibly be an incompatibility with graphics card, but wouldn't know where to start on that end if it is.

Setup Installation :: BIOS Boot Priority / Windows Loading Off Different Drive

Mar 10, 2013

Re-install windows 8 with new motherboard and CPU

I ended up managed to be able to boot into windows after i swapped out my motherboard and CPU to the new ones and everything seems to be working as it should, windows automatically installed the intel drivers and all my old programs and settings are there perfectly.

I can only boot into windows if i select my backup drive as #1 boot device in the BIOS, the SSD isnt even on the list.

The thing I don't understand lies in that, if i select my SSD as priority, where the directory of windows is installed, i get a bootmgr missing error - I've tried the various methods of recovering this using the cmd and a windows installation disc.

This isn't a huge issue but it's really tripping me out as to why this is occurring? I initially had some issues getting windows to boot so i installed a clean windows8 on this backup drive, i didnt change any settings at all. was only making sure that the SSD was being recognized and i hadn't corrupted it somehow. is it possible that the backup drive boot manager is directing it to the SSD.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 Boot Priority Device Not Saving On BIOS

Jul 17, 2014

I wanted to do a fresh windows 8.1 install (i have a samsung NP500P4C-T03CL notebook with windows 8 OEM preinstalled and when i updated to 8.1 the system went slow and "faily"). So i put the CD on the drive, but for my suprise when i reboted the system to enter the BIOS the F2 key didn't do the job, nor it appeared on the splash screen on samsung. After googling a lot and under trial/error concept i could enter the BIOS via Shift+Restart.

I did some changes to the BIOS booting set-up and noticed i have 2 Windows Boot Manager, the CD, the HDD and one option called "SETUP" that has a "!" ("!3.Setup"). So i tried every combination posible with Secure boot unabled, and UEFI+CSM OS, also with UEFI disabled, and none gave me the option to enter bios with F2, or recovery with F4. I managed to install win7 on another HDD. Main thing, besides the F2, F4, F8, F9, F12 (yes i prove all of them, even ESC), is that whenever i change the boot order it's not saved, and it is restablished to:

1. Windows Boot Manager
2. Windows Boot Manager
3. Setup
4. HDD
5. CD

Also i noticed that on the password options the one for the HDD appears grayed and as "FROZEN". I entered user and supervisor password, neither cleared the HDD one. i want to keep the BIOS update as a last resort. clearly it's not hdd related as the same thing happened when i tried another hdd with win7).

Setup Installation :: Win 8.1 Pro - Install Goes Straight To RECOVERY

Nov 15, 2013

OK, my company has a licensing agreement with MS with Software Assurance, so i downloaded the US English Win 8.1 Pro ISO.

Details on the ISO below:
MD5 (SW_DVD5_Win_Pro_8.1_64BIT_English_MLF_X18-96634.ISO) = ae933ae02925d6ece7f325ca93dcb118

First I tried installing on a late 2013 27" iMac running Mavericks. I ran the Boot Camp Assistant and tried installing multiple times, both options: 1) with a DVD (which was verified when burned) and USB drive for the Apple drivers, & 2) with a USB drive only, that Apple extracts the ISO to and loads its drivers on. Each time I got the following message:

RECOVERY

Your PC needs to be repaired

The operating system couldn't be loaded because a critical system driver is missing or contains errors.

File:windowsSystem32DriversNtfs.sys

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

Press Enter to try again

Press F8 for Startup Settings

If I simply power off the iMac and boot it back up, it goes straight into OS X. If I run Boot Camp Assistant again, it prompts me to remove Windows & resizes the disk back to all OS X.

So I decided to try on an old DELL that uses a BIOS and is already running Windows 8.1 Pro. It fails if I try to run setup.exe from within Windows, & if I boot with the DVD I get the exact same message I get on the iMac.

Setup Installation :: Recovery Drive Refused To Install Win 8.I?

Jan 27, 2013

I have a brand new system with an OEM version of Windows 8 installed (Core not Pro)

ASUS CM 6870
2 TB HD
16 TB RAM
ASUS P8H77-M Pro Motherboard

The new system works well but I have also purchased an OCZ Vector 256GB SSD and intend to install it as my primary hard drive.

ASUS didn't and will not supply a recovery disk.

ASUS provides an activation key for a downloadable version of Acronis True image. I tried that but their version is not compatible with Windows 8. I managed to get a newer version but it didn't recognize that the SSD was installed.

Next, I used Win 8 to make a recovery drive USB drive thinking that I would be able to do a clean install of Win with it. I had the 2TB HD disconnected and the SSD installed but the recovery drive refused to install Win 8. I either got the message "The drive where windows is installed is locked. Unlock and try again." or "The drive is too small to format" (the wording on the last may not be exact)

I was able to "find" a Windows 8 ISO file. I burned it to a DVD and was able to install Win 8 but it was not a UEFI installation. There were only 2 SSD HD partitions: 1. System Reserved - 350 MB NTFS. 2. 238.13 GB NTFS Healthy.

I then deleted these volumes and followed the UEFI installation instructions in the thread:
UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 8 with

Windows installed but it was not a UEFI installation. I got the same partitions as above. At step 6, I only saw the 2 partitions. I tried this process twice with the same results.

The USB stick was prepared using the instructions in this thread:

UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows

I think that the USB drive should have had 4 partitions on it but it only has one:

7.47 GB FAT32 Healthy.

Setup Installation :: No Recovery Partition After Clean Install Of Windows 8.1

Dec 2, 2013

I built up a new PC featuring a brand new SSD (i.e fully unallocated). Then, I made a clean install of Windows 8.1 pro (64bits) using an ISO DVD. Using Windows disk management tool after the install, I can see that only two partitions have been created: one System partition in NTFS (350MB) and the remaining of the SSD is the C: partition while I was expecting a third one : a recovery partition. Of course, I do not remember a prompt during the install to ask whether I want a recovery parttion or not.

Is it normal ? Is a recovery partition useful knowing I have the install DVD ? If the recovery partition has some advantages, is there a way to create it after the install is completed ?

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 Password Recovery - Can't Boot From DVD

Oct 4, 2013

It's too late for me to return the computer so I want to be able to use it, unfortunately I don't know his password and there's no chance he will tell me. I can't reset the password because it's linked to his email that I don't have access to.

So doing some research online I found some programs to recover the password that I could burn onto a disc and then boot from the disc. The problem is despite changing the boot order in the BIOS to but from CD/DVD (in my case I'm using a DVD), it doesn't boot from it and eventually just goes to the password login for Windows.

I disabled Secure Boot, I didn't have anything called Legacy Boot to enable, but I did disable something called Boot Quiet Mode, and once I did that when I first start the computer instead of getting a Gateway logo I get the Windows logo. I've searched the BIOS and can't find any other type of boot option.

I figure if I could get the darn thing to boot from disc I could try one of the many programs for password recovery but I can't get that far.

Dell :: Inspiron 3537 - Boot To Recovery UEFI BIOS

Apr 14, 2014

So, I got a Inspiron 3537 i5. Nice laptop for it's price. Downloaded all the manuals, made my recovery DVDs. All was well in my world.

First thing I noticed is that there is no info in the manuals for tweaking the BIOS and since it is my first experience with a UEFI bios I was a bit disappointed. Is there a manual available for it?

Next I upgraded ATI Drivers to 13.12. I am an old user who always knew that updates were usually a good thing to do. Got in the same problem as many others with PC screen not waking up from sleep.

Thought I would do a recovery from the disk, but after trying various combinations (Ctl+F11, F8, F12 etc) I couldn't find a way to boot in the Recovery console. I did the recovery from my DVD and the laptop works fine.

How to add in UEFI bios a boot option to the Recovery partition? I undersstand that I have to create a new boot option using "Add boot option" and the two options available are to boot to the 1st (windows EFI) or 2nd (recovery partition), but the path for the recovery efi file to be loaded is unknown (+ you can't have access to the recovery partition to see the contents of it from windows).

8.1 Update - Won't Boot Past BIOS / All Recovery Media Black Screen With Mouse

Jun 2, 2014

I tried updating to Windows 8.1 Update 1 and in didn't go through properly (it hard froze and crashed) and now won't boot past the BIOS. I cannot get into Windows and I cannot get into the Recovery Menu.

I tried recovery USB's and any I create either from a 3rd party or Windows itself results in loading to a black screen with a mouse cursor. Only one worked, Acronis (probably because its Linux) and it showed all the drives ruling out a hardware issue but sadly it cannot repair Windows.

So it seems I might be a victim of the black screen issue some had when moving to Update 1.... BUT the difference is I cannot boot into the recovery menu at all and any recovery media boots to a black screen.

How to get out of this screen and actually boot into anything which will allow me to try to fix the MBR or go back to a restore point.

I thought the point of recovery software was that it loads no matter how corrupted Windows is... obviously not! Something is stopping all of them booting properly.

I'm evaluating the benefit of pruning my boot drive to its essentials and moving everything unessential to the its own partition on the spinning drive, then cloning this and moving it to the mSATA drive and rejiggering the boot sequence.
