Hardware Drivers :: Black Screen And Cursor - No Safe Mode Access
Oct 25, 2013
Last week my laptop had trouble starting up, it had a problem with atidvag.dll if I recall. I wasn't sure what to do but I got lucky and after a few attempts in managed to boot. Now however it doesn't even get to the point where it could tell me what is wrong, no Windows logo. Just straight in black screen with a cursor in the top left. F2 will take me to BIOS (if I am quick), but no other keys work. Booted onto installation media to try startup repair, no joy, rollback also no joy, tried using command line following the instructions here to force a boot into safe mode but no joy.

My Windows8PC shows black screen with only mouse cursor instead of login screen. I tried chkdsk but it shows no errors. Even when i start in safe mode the screen stays black. I think it's a graphic driver problem, but i dont know how i can deactivate or delete the installed driver via cmd.

I am using Windows 8.1 with all the latest updates.
I'm trying to get into safe mode, but when I do it is only a black screen with in each corner it says "Safe Mode" and the whole screen blinks every few seconds resetting the cursors position. The cursor and text are only visible when I am moving the mouse, otherwise it's all black. I can't do any button combinations like CTRL ALT DEL or anything.
Normal mode works fine, and I can't think of any viruses/malware that work allow you to work in normal... but not safe mode.
I have all my Windows 8 options disabled (Windows 8 mode, fast boot, secure boot) to see if it was those but to no avail.
Every time I try, I have to go into safe mode. It sticks, so I can't just reboot/reset and go back into normal mode. I have to go into the emergency cmd and do bcdedit to delete the safeboot value.
I usually clean my PC every so often, the same with OS re-installation but nothing is wrong with the normal mode and the OS still seems quite fast with the SSD.
I have never seen safe mode function, this is the first attempt at running it in safe mode. What could cause this? I can't get into safe mode but can get into normal mode...

I have recently installed windows updates and after restart the black screen occurred after I typed my password. About five days before that I have reinstalled my Mobile Intel 4 series driver and now in Device manager it shows 3 grayed out monitors which were installed when I have reinstalled the Video driver. The monitor driver that Is currently loaded was installed when I installed the OS itself.

Win 8 Pro..I am trying to fix an error that is causing my desktop to randomly reboot.
I wanted to run chkdsk from safe mode, however, tapping f8 doesn't work for me.
Tried to restore a backup and paragon merged all the drives into one file and says the structure is different and I may lose data.
Win 8 will not let me stop chkdsk with any key press.

My screen seems to have a grey filter overlaying it. See attached.
When i booted it in safe mode, the screen is showing the right vibrant colors. When i booted it back to normal mode, the screen is greyish but strangely the mouse is showing the correct white color.
I have googled across numerous website but none of them bring me closer to the issue. I have read the thread, Personalize Suddenly Greyed Out but this is not what i encountered. The options or buttons or selections did not grey out, it affects the screen only.
I cannot afford a system restore because i shared this laptop with my gf.

One day i tried to start my computer. Once it started i booted up steam only to see that none of my games were installed. Hmm. So i opened up my computer and saw that one of my SATA cables came unplugged. After plugging it back in my computer did a system check on all of my hard drives. Once that was completed my computer restarted and went to the swirly windows logo and then to a black screen with a mouse pointer that i could move...that's it. I've tried a few things from looking it up like booting into safe mode, trying to log in with the black screen still up, taking out the video card and putting it back in and nothing, just goes to the black screen. I don't have a windows 8 disk so i can't attempt to fix it that way nor do i have my 8 key on hand. i built my desktop so its nowhere on my rig.

I recently started having the black screen with the flashing cursor come up sometimes when I start my PC. I have narrowed it down as being my 3rd HDD (2TB WD) as the culprit, which I only use as media storage. It is not set as a boot device since windows is on my SSD and when I unplug the drive from my mobo, windows always starts up without any issue.
Basically my question is, is this just a case of a hard drive going bad? I ran chkdsk on all 3 drives and none of them had any issues and it is not fragmented or anything that I can tell, so I don't know. I have had this setup for a while now and about a month ago it started doing this. The screen doesn't always come up however, so I have no clue what the issue is.

My MSI GE70 laptop with windows 8 64 has recently been having an issue while watching videos (whether it is a downloaded file or a stream) where the screen will suddenly go black and the sound will go away, but the cursor will still be visible with the spinning circle to show me it is working on something. It will just stay black and nothing will respond, even CTRL-ALT-DEL. The only way to fix it is to restart the computer by holding down the power button. It doesn't give me any error messages before this happens or on start up afterwards. It isn't overheating, and I didn't install any new drivers before this started.

I had to reinstall the whole machine from scratch because old HDD has been playing up. This is what I did:
1. Imaged old (faulty) drive to new one - just because I needed some data out of it and the old one was very slow and freezing.
2. run the system with new imaged drive - all working except sometimes it was playing up, so I decided to upgrade to another drive with Windows 8.1 from Win7
3. have plugged in new HDD to SATA0 port and the imaged drive to port SATA2
4. installed Windows 8.1, copied data over, reinstalled applications and so on.
5. all working perfectly. Now every time I boot up the machine, I'm offered options if I want to boot to Windows 8.1 or Win7. No problem there.
6. Now I wanted to remove the imaged HDD from SATA2 port, so I did - and here comes the problem:
All I get now is the black screen with flashing cursor in top left corner. How is this possible ? When I plug the second drive in all works as before. I just have to remove the second drive. How can I do this? In the attached image you can see my drives from Windows 8.1 the Disk0 is the one I need to keep - that's a Windows 8.1 ( C: ) Disk1 (imaged HDD) is the one with Win7 on it and needs to be removed.

I recently upgraded my dell 1645 from windows 7 to 8.
I installed most of the drivers from the dell website even though they were meants for win 7. For some of them I installed drivers directly from the device manufacturers website.
When the computer first starts up it passes the windows logo, and then a black screen is shown (no cursor) for a good 5 minutes. Then it advances to the login (seatle cartoon image) and everything works perfectly.
I had another issue before that I think I solved which was the intel rapid storage technology. Whenever the computer would go to sleep I got a windows BSOD saying driver_irql_less_than_or_equal. But after installing the newest intel rapid storage drivers sleep seams to work perfectly.
The drivers I installed from the manufacturers that arent on the official 1645 driver page:
- ati radeon drivers from ati
- synaptics drivers
- bluetooth 380 drivers, supposed to be 370 I believe but it seems to only be 380 available which people say works.
I also tried running the intel chipset automatic check, which said I was on the latest.

This has happened on a few different systems. After it has the login screen, It will go to the desktop (completely black no icons) and a cursor.
Windows sign does not work nothing other then CTRL + ALT + DEL works but wont bring up task manager.
So I end up doing the "Advanced start up" where I Restore the system and do a fresh load, but when I try to run the updates i get the error of
" Log file c:windowssystem32logfilessrtsrttraill.txt "
So I go to CMD (administrator) and run SFC/ Scannow
"Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"
then, chkdsk x: /f
Cannot lock current drive, windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected. I ended up erasing the HDD and starting from scratch and STILL get the same issue.

My laptop has been acting really weird the last couple of weeks. It would crash randomly, and sometimes when I picked it up to put it somewhere else, it crashed too.
Now, I thought this was a problem with Windows 8.1, because it didn't behave like this before with normal Windows 8. So I Refreshed my laptop, and after that it worked again, without crashing.
I left it in sleep mode while I got some sleep too, and when I booted it up this morning, it crashed again.
After that the whole laptop wouldn't boot up, and now the only thing that shows is a cursor on a black screen, and it seems to be stuck in sleep mode, because I can't even turn it off completely manually. So I can't access the BIOS or make it boot up in Safe Mode. What the hell should I do?
Specs:
Toshiba Sattelite L50-A-15U
Windows 8 64-bit
Intel i7 4th generation processor with Intel HD4600 graphics card
nVidia GeForce GT740M graphics card
2x 4 GB DDR3L RAM

I upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 8.1 Pro about a week ago. Everything seems fine, unless I leave the computer idle for a long time. What happens is I get a black screen, with no cursor, when I return to the computer after leaving it idle overnight. It is not asleep. It is also not frozen. I can tell because I am able to reboot it while it's like this by:
Press: WIN+R
Type: shutdown /r /f [ENTER]
Wait 90 seconds.
The computer reboots just fine when I do this. Could it be a bad display driver perhaps? I have an AMD Radeon HD 7950 and am using the latest display drivers from AMD.

I shut down my computer last night. It runs 8.1 and when I shut it down I do not believe it installed updates.i tried to boot it. It boots and after I type in my PIN, shows my desktop for a few seconds. Then, my display will either turn black or a blueish grey. There is no cursor. It does this every reboot now. I can not do anything except reset when it happens.
System info:
Two GTX 760's in SLI
Two Asus monitors
Possible culprits:
1 - I have Actual Multiple Monitors trial installed. The freezing/display blanking seems to happen when the trial time left window shows up, but that may be coincidence.
2 - I heard graphics card driver updates and windows updates can clash in some way and cause a similar issue. From what I've read, a cursor is still on screen and task manager can be opened with CTRL SHIFT ESC. Neither of these work for me.
3- Virus? I have avast so I doubt it.

I just installed 8.1 on my Samsung Series 7 Chronos laptop and it's now unusable. All I get after a reboot now is a blank screen and a vanishing cursor. I can't do CTRL+ALT+DEL or any other button combination. I also can't seem to be able to do a system restore as a restore point doesn't seem to exist for some odd reason. I've also tried the boot into low res mode but I get the same result. The only thing that seems to work is booting into Safe Mode with Networking but that doesn't allow me to install/uninstall anything so it's pretty much useless.

I just updated my Windows 8.1 when I restarted my PC. When I was going to login, it was just a black screen. If you are in the login screen, the selected language in the right left corner and the internet connection in the left corner. Both of those two signs are flickering in the corners. And my cursor is also flickering.

Upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro from 8 through the Windows Store. Everything seemed to go smoothly. Updated graphics card drivers prior to install of 8.1. Now whenever I start up, I can log in, but then it goes to a black screen with a cursor. Ctrl-Alt-Del will bring up the task manager and from there I can access programs and get on the internet. So after maybe 5 minutes or so after opening a program (usually firefox) the Metro screen randomly loads. None of the store apps worked, though I was able to find a fix for that. Some of them still don't work right though. Is there a better way to upgrade from 8 other than through the store?

I have a problem in my dual boot machine. I decided to remove Linux mint 17 from my dual boot with windows 8.
I used easeus partition manager to delete the partitions associated (root, home and swap). Then I got unallocated space just before my windows partition. So I moved my windows partition to the extreme left possible. Then I merged this unallocated space with my second storage partition.
These steps required reboot (specifically the moving of windows partition). When I rebooted my PC I got an error that grub was not found. I realized that I had forgot to fix MBR and load windows boot loader. So I used windows 7 recovery disk (yes windows 7 as I don't have windows8 recovery or installation disk). I got a windows 7 style boot loader instead of windows 8's graphical one which has advanced recovery options built in. But I proceeded. Then eases did its job with the partitions. After a reboot now I am stuck at a black screen after entering my password with a movable mose cursor. I can only press Ctrl+alt+del. Selecting task manager from it does nothing.
Since I don't have windows 8 disks and windows 8 boot loader I am not able to refresh or reset my PC. Neither can I shift restart my PC to get advanced boot options. One more thing to note, that while entering password, I noticed that the lock screen and account pictures have changed to defaults of a freshly installed windows.

One day, I rebooted, and then there was nothing. After Windows finished loading, there was naught but a black screen, and a cursor if I move the mouse quickly. This happens in safe mode as well, and on both my dedicated graphics card (an Asus AMD HD 6450 Silent) and my integrated graphics (Other than it is a Biostar A780L3G). When I try to refresh directly, with a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 installation media, it says it is invalid, despite it being x64, same as the installed version. When I try directly, it says the HDD is locked, and none of the guides I have followed to unlock it through the disk work. Also, I dont know if this matters or not, but when I try booting into safe mode, at first, when I move the mouse, in the corners, it says Safe Mode.

I have an Asus CM6730 PC, bought in October, which had Windows 8 installed on it.
Everything was fine, until I decided to install the upgrade to Windows 8.1.
After a week or so, my mouse started to freeze up randomly and the only way to log out of the PC was by holding the power button down for several seconds. The next day, I was working on the PC, took a phone call and the machine went into standby mode - but wouldn't come back on when I press a key / moved mouse.
At that point I decided to restore the machine back to factory settings. This was done successfully so I was back to Windows 8. However - my problems have got worse - and now I am at the stage where the PC wont even boot up in Safe Mode - the screen just goes black.
I have read up on a few sites and I believe it could anything from driver related - to a faulty motherboard.

My system is old : MSI Neo2 Nforce3 + HD4650 Radeon AGP + 2 GB mem + AMD Athlon 3000+
However, I wanted to try Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation for it and was able to install it successfully with 32 bit version (64 bit didn't work). I installed Radeon legacy AGP Hotfix 12.6 drivers that seem to work for the old AGP card giving Youtube HD playback! Not too shabby for a single core beast.
So I have been happy with the system performance (faster to boot than XP etc.).
However, I have encountered two problems that I haven't been able to resolve:
1 - Realtek Gigabit Ethernet (8111) fails to initialize the Internet on some boots, requiring enable/disable driver to make it work. I have installed newest drivers from Realtek website but no effect.
2 - When the system goes to sleep, it wakes up with black screen and no way to get picture back except resetting the computer. I have tried to change my MB BIOS setup (I have the latest BIOS installed) to disable S3 and use only S1 mode but to no avail. Black screen awaits in every wake up. I have also experienced once the driver_power_state_failure error..
So, I see there are many posts about black screens and sleep modes but I haven't found the solution for Nforce3 motherboard AGP setups yet.

I recently built my first custom PC. Here is a link to the build on PCPartPicker: AMD FX-6300, Sapphire Radeon R9 270, Corsair 300R - Ordered build updated - ajthemacboy's Saved Part List - PCPartPicker
Since then I have had random black screen issues. At one point I reinstalled the OS, and they still occur. You may notice the R9 270 needs a 450W power supply at the least.
At first look you would think this is the problem, but it's not. Before the R9 270 I had an EVGA 750 Ti, which only uses like 60 watts of power or something, as well as a CM430W power supply, and the black screen issues still occurred.
First I returned the power supply for a CS450M, black screen still occurred. Then I returned the 750Ti for an r9 270, and the issue still occurs.
If it's not the graphics card, power supply, or OS, what should I do?
The dump file is attached. It blames NTOSKRNL.EXE, but I have no clue what this is or how to fix it.
