Hardware Drivers :: All Rear USB Ports Sometimes Stop Working?
May 31, 2014
And it happens only when I boot the computer up and find that neither my keyboard or mouse are working then I plug them into front (2) avaialable usb ports and they work fine....
And then If I try to uninstall universal bus controllers by device manager then my keyboard + mouse stops working (obviously) then I shutdown via power button .... plug keyboard+mouse again back to rear usb ports... and they start working till few days...
I'm on windows 8.1 x64 with latest updates and all latest drivers etc...
The funny thing is this problem is with me since last 2 years or so... and I changed 3 Power supplies since then and luckily one motherboard, changed 3 mouses and 1 keyboard, 1 Hard disk too
even if they are plugged in rear ports I get "USB Disconnection" sound sometimes....
now thinking about buying a bluetooth keyboard + mouse but there are other things that needed to be plug in into rear ports... or should I go for an internal USB 2.0 PCI card ?
I have problem that just crept up, my rear usb ports are malfunctioning. when I plug my mouse in the light underneath it comes on, but the mouse is not operational. The keyboards numlock light doesn't even go on.
My front ports are working now, but this is greatly inconveniencing me because, my scanner, printer, and headphones were plugged into there and now I have access to neither.
This started as soon as I plugged my phone into the front usb port as I have done over a thousand times with multiple phones even of dubious origin with no such a result.
my USB 3.0 ports are not working with my USB 3.0 ext-HDD. It's an ADATA Nobility NH13 I don't have any other USB 3.0 equipment to test, but the ext-HDD works perfectly on my laptop and on my TV as well, so it's definitely not the HDDs fault.
When I plug in USB 2 devices, they work perfectly and at maximum speeds. Even the HDD does work when connected with a USB 2.0 cable instead of it's own 3.0 cable.
This behaviour is present on front as well as the rear ports.
In the Device Manager there IS a USB3.0 driver:
Intel(r) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 (Microsoft) Universal Serial Bus controllers Generic USB xHCI Host Controller PCI but 0, device 20, function 0 This device is working properly
I don't know why but my external hard drive isn't showing up when connected.. Windows makes the connection noise when I plug it in but it don't show up in disk management, device manager or anywhere else... If I plug it into a regular usb port it works fine... And its a usb 3.0 capable drive it worked before....?" I tried the new hardware wizard in device manager and didn't see anything... drivers all look fine....

My pc was working fine until yesterday night when july windows update was downloaded and installed.
Then when today morning i booted up my pc all my usb devices stopped working, I cannot use my mouse or keyboard when my windows is booted.
However, I am able to use my mouse and keyboard fine in UEFI bios without any issue.
I tried clearing cmos, changing ports, enable and disable legacy usb in bios, enable and disable intel xhci still my mouse and keyboard are not working when windows boots up.
I tried system restore using windows 8 cd but it ends up giving some error during restore and says unable to restore.
I am able to access my system registry and explorer using the windows 8 cd.
all plugged in new computer drivers up to dateset to quadraphonic they were working yesterday but they appear to have stopped on their own. the test speaker option worked at first but now they dont when i click the speaker icon to test on the sound playback options tab the level indicator shows green as though they are working but there is no sound coming out of the rear speakers
In any case, as the topic title says, some keys on my laptop occasionally stop working for some time, before returning back to normal. Sometimes simply pressing the key several times makes it work, sometimes holding it pressed for ten seconds or so works... Sometimes neither of these works. Occasionally, the key starts working it I press it in rapid succession with a key that does work. For example, pressing I, a non-working key, instantly after pressing J, which works perfectly. Sometimes I simply just randomly press keys on my keyboard until the non-working keys start working again. Backspacing seems to make it easier for them to go back to 'non-working state', although this may be just my imagination.
When any one of the keys that sometimes stop working stops working, none of those keys works. And when one starts working again, all of them start working. Although they may return back to non-working state right away. Although it might be just coincidence, and it doesn't actually work that way.
An incomplete list of the keys that occasionally stop working: (Left) Ctrl, I, O, 2, 7.
There are others, I believe, at least one more number, but I have no way to check until they stop working. And at the time of typing this post, they seem to be working strangely well. Also, the keys are (almost?) always in the 'non-working state' when the laptop wakes from sleep mode and I have to input the password. Luckily, it offers the On-Screen Keyboard option, which, by the way, works perfectly.
I have a problem with keyboard and mouse. Every day when i playing some games my keyboard randomly stop working (backlight on keyboard still light but LED on num lock is off and buttons don't work) after few seconds my mouse also stop working. Plugin to another USB doesn't work. Only when i disconnect keyboard and connect mouse to other USB mouse work. After restarting system all works fine. Im sure keyboard and mouse is good (testing it on laptop when this happens and its work normal). I have updated drivers and BIOS.
PC spec.: Windows 8.1 AMD Phenom II x4 940 Gigabyte ga MA790x UD4P GTX 660 2xHDD+1SSD
I have problem with USB 2.0. The problem first begin with app called (zadig.exe) under options i click List all devices.
I think by mistake i change of the drives after that the USB 2.0 stop working. I have USB 3.0 and its fine. The USB 2.0 can charge my phone and the mouse can work in BIOS ONLY. After going to Win 8 is stop working but it will charge my phone.
i've been having this problem since I THINK starting to use a HDMI wire. But now, i cannot get any audio from the audio jacks, they are detected, but no sound is produced and I just cannot figure it out. I've disabled the HDMI, installed, un-installed, re-installed audio drivers and pretty much any method and i can find thus far and nothing at all has worked. I'm a huge lover of music, and the is driving me insane!
Note: The speakers are fine, they work with my iPhone.
I have a strange issue that started appearing when I installed win 8, all my USB ports seem to reset with no apparent reason on different time periods, from a few minutes to hours, its like I unplugged the thing that's in the usb, and put it back in, its really annoying since my wirelles is via usb so I loose my connection every time it happens, its not I hardware problem because when I switch to win 7 it runs perfect
I have checked the drivers for the usb and it says its up to date?
I have two programs on my hard drive. They both require access to a COM port. When I attempt to access either one it works fine, but I need to have both of them running at the same time---thus I need an additional COM port. When I setup either program, the available port appears (COM 3). It does not allow the entry of any other port or call up an additional one---with all the COM's available, it would seem reasonable to be able to use more than one port at the time! I am using a Dell Pentium Laptop (1545) with Windows 8.1 PRO. The computer has 3G of memory.
My usb ports do not recognize some devices. Sometimes when I plug one device another one is unplugged., some times a specific usb port works, sometimes it doesn't. eg: when i unplug the mouse nw and plug it again it will stop working. if i plug another device eon a different usb port the mouse is disconnected. I went to control panel devices Manger and uninstalled every usb port and enable it again with no results.
I have several printers at work all hooked up to a samba share so that the whole office can use them. We have Konica Minolta, HP and Lexmarks predominantly but some other brands as well like Kyocera.
I have a fresh Win 8.1 Pro install and i have installed the printer drivers via the Windows update mechanism for all the printers. Some i've added via the samba share some via direct ip connection.
For whatever reason i cannot add/delete or config any of the printer ports as seen in the attached screen cap. I've even tried the windows Administrator account to no avail. UAC is off and i have admin rights to the pc.
I have sought support on freenode's #windows channel and googled the hell out of this topic, to avail.
I have a new PC that a friend built for me, I've noticed that the wireless receivers for my keyboard, mouse and wifi aren't working properly when plugged into any USB ports (front or back, 2.0 or 3.0). The range for the keyboard/mouse is awful and wifi connection is very slow if it connects at all.
However, all peripherals work correctly when plugged into a powered USB hub, the range for keyboard/mouse is huge and internet/download speed is fantastic.
Everything is up to date and was installed correctly. Having a couple of forums and speaking to Asus, I think it's a power issue. I arranged an RMA but the problem persists with the new motherboard.
Mouse - Microsoft Wireless Mouse 4000 Keyboard - Logitich K400R Wifi - Edimax EW-7811UN OS - Windows 8.1 Case - Bitfenix Prodigy-M PSU - Corsair CX500 Mobo - Asus H81M-Plus CPU - Intel Core i5-4440 3.10GHz RAM - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4) DDR3 1600 HDD - Seagate Barracuda 1TB GPU - MSI R6850
I am having problems with USB 3 devices disconnecting and reconnecting all the time when they are plugged into the Esata ports on the back of the motherboard in my sig. The USB 3 devices work ok in the normal USB 2 and 3 ports on the motherboard but I am not sure why they are not working in the Esata ports? I'm running Windows 8.1 with all the latest drivers and I am also running the BIOS f7e provided by Gigabyte to see if this would resolve the issue but it's not worked. If I connect USB 2 devices to the Esata ports they work ok, but could they possibly be faulty as they are not working correctly with USB3 devices?
I have Silicon Power Blaze B20 flash drive, which is not recognized by my desktop PC's both USB 3.0 ports. The flash drive's light blinks when pugged in, but no reaction from PC's side. I have tried to plug cord between flash drive and PC, but no change. It does recognize the device when plugged in any other USB 2.0 port. And the device is being recognized by other computer's both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, so I assume it is PC's fault, but what it is. My PC's USB 3.0 ports do recognize any other USB 3.0 devices - my external HDD, other USB 3.0 devices but this drive.
I have recently bough a new PC. Now that everything is put together and installed I am facing only ONE problem.
I own an Adata Nobility NH13 External HDD which is USB 3.0. When I plug it into any USB3.0 port using a USB3.0 cable, the drive does not show up in My Computer, nor in Device manager, regardless if I use the Front or Rear USB3.0 ports.
The USB2 ports work just fine with it but what is the point in having a USB3.0 device if you don't use it the way you should ... If I plug in USB2 devices in the USB3.0 ports the work great, and even if I connect the ExtHDD with a USB2 cable it does work.
Now, the first thing you would think is that the USB3.0 drivers are missing but in the Device manager, unser USB controllers, there is a Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller-0100(Microsoft).
I'm using Win 8 on my laptop Lenovo G580. I have some problems with it. When I restart my laptop it takes too much time to restart and sometimes all USB ports doesn't work properly, means it shows Modem, USB Mouse, Pen drive connected but doesn't work. Here is the link of Dump file on Skydrive..
My work PC was dead. Not sure what happened, but after replacing the PSU it worked again. But I have two weird issues:
1. USB Ports: Plug and play doesn't work. If I connect a USB device in Windows, nothing happens. But if it's plugged before I boot, both the BIOS and Windows recognize it.
2. Internal Sound Card: It's enabled in the BIOS, it's recognized in Device Manager, but there's no sound. I've tried uninstalling and updating the drivers with no luck.
Specs: OS: Windows 8.1 Core x86 Motherboard: Asus P5KPL-AM SE (latest BIOS) PSU: Generic 500W (the old one was 450W, and everything worked fine).
Well mine certainly does.. When it quits I simply turn the mouse off and then on again. Doesn't figure as it worked in Windows 8 but, it refuses to work correctly in Windows 8.1. And more than that my mouse is a Microsoft Sculpt Touch mouse.
I have had this windows 8 laptop for half a year now. I didn't have any problems with it until AFTER the 30 day warranty expired. My issue is the right parenthesis key, the underscore key, and the question mark key stop working every now and then and it is getting more and more frequent. I haven't done anything to this laptop at all, It hasn't been dropped, hit, spilled upon or anything.
for whatever reason windows defender decided to stop working e couple of days ago... whether a quick scan or full scan it stops about 2/3 the way through and reports the following error. i have no other av installed, no remnants of another av on my system, scannow shows no problems, dism health test checks out just fine, etc., etc. also, fwiw, there is nothing in defender's history files, all clean... as a result windows defender has an orange format, instead of green, which is apparently the default color scheme when it is not able to protect the system adequately.
When I've been running certain programs on my computer, I keep getting the message, program has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. This has happened to me in Internet Explorer when I try to play movies, Windows Media Player, Norton Internet Security and when I try to run Windows Experience index.
Some programs wont even open. My computer has been running fine since I purchased it 8 months ago. This started happening after a windows update a couple of weeks ago. I've refreshed windows 8 twice, ran a full system virus scan, ran malwarebytes and it found nothing. I also tried sfc /scannow and used dism /online /cleanup-image /restore health to fix component store corruption and fix corrupt system files and also tried gwscan from Hirens boot cd. I generated a system health report and this is what the report came up with:
I uninstalled Intel Smart Connect Technology after experiencing a BSOD that seemed to be caused by a related driver. When the uninstallation tool asked if I wanted to restart now/later, I chose to restart now, which was followed by another BSOD.
Now I can boot into Windows just fine but neither my mouse or my keyboard are working. They work in the BIOS but as soon as Windows is loaded, they stop functioning. I've tried resetting my CMOS but this did not solve the problem. I've also checked that they are enabled in the BIOS.
I would try a system restore but Windows 8 doesn't seem to allow me to boot into repair mode without actually going into Windows first, but I can't do it from Windows because of my malfunctioning peripherals.
I can't use the Windows 8 installation disc to repair because as soon as the message that says "Press any key to continue" comes up, my keyboard stops working. However, it seems I can force the PC to boot from the CD which after a bit of a wait gets me to the Windows installation screen, with my only option being to completely reinstall Windows.
I am able to enter Windows Repair Mode with the Installation disc, but there is no option for Safe Mode and when I attempt to System Restore, I get this error message: "To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore."
Trying Windows 8 at work and bought new Samsung 700t tablet. Windows 8 works fine with local user (linked to live id) and all our software including Symantec Endpoint 12.1.2. As soon as I join to domain (server 2008) and reboot the live tiles no longer function. Have total reset several times and tried refresh and restore points. My guess is that has to be default behavior of Win 8 GPO compared to 2008 domain GPO. We are very plain on our policies and so far have not found anything on local computer or GPO that can correct issues.
So recently the sound on my machine will randomly stop working- no apps produce sound, Chrome doesn't, not even the system sounds. I posted about this on another forum which told me to check for hardware changes in the device manager, but that doesn't seem to be working, or at least not consistently.
From what I can tell, the sound won't cut out if it's playing. It will only stop when there's nothing playing at all. After that, it just comes back when it feels like it it seems. I've tried updating my sound drivers and everything, nothing is muted, so I'm at a loss.
I purchased a new computer in the last few days, pre-installed Windows 8. I was having the odd error message where Chrome would stop working and reload. Or sometimes an error message saying my computer would restart. They are different messages:
Memory Management IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Special Pool Detected Memory Corrupt
I downloaded all updates for Windows 8, then updated to 8.1 and downloaded all but one update available (Bing Desktop). I am still getting these BSOD. Sometimes in Chrome, sometimes in Steam, and sometimes randomly
I've run the Memory diagnostic tool in Windows, and it found no errors. I've attached the SF Diagnostics folder which was created.
My computer was beeping on start up and would start beeping randomly while the computer was on.Sometimes it would beep non-stop and I would have to disable the internal speaker. I updated the bios and that fixed the problem, but my webcam driver and internal mic driver isn't working anymore.
