how can I activate windows 8 on Dell i5 laptop
I have Latitude 10 tablet that now has Enterprise edition of Windows 8 installed and this has removed the Dell Picks section in the Microsoft app store. Is there any way to get this back? I have an app installed on another device that is Dell exclusive and I cannot find any way to get it installed on the Latitude 10 even though it is a Dell device.
View 2 Replies View RelatedA couple of weeks ago I upgraded my computer from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. Just recently I haven't been receiving audio. I have tried to uninstall the driver and reinstall it. I have performed a clean boot. I have even tried system restore. Nothing wants to work. I have tried updates for drivers through Dell Support, but Dell doesn't detect Windows 8.1.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've started to like the new operating system a lot, but one thing puzzles me. If I open up an adobe file, or use a media player, I'm left in a screen that seems to have no "X" or exit button in the upper right hand corner. If I search through the settings I can't see anything that would close the app. Does going back to the desktop or the metro screen automatically shut down the window and process for the particular app?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm well aware that the gx270 is an older machine but I've upgraded it several times now with various hardware so I'm happy with it's performance. What Ii'm not happy with is it's inability to run W8 and Dell's lack of interest to keep up it's bios upgrades to adjust to new os or software. I've tried installing W8 and found that i hadn't got NX bit enabled on my processor.
I looked for it in the bios but couldn't find it so I ran coreinfo.exe and found my processor has nx bit capabilities but i can't turn it on or off in the bios. I've tried installing W8 from the setup in sources file but it failed on reboot with the same nx bit error code.
My Dell Inspiron All-In-One came with Win8 preinstalled. Purchased from Staples I have the pc for about a year and was forced to do the 8.1 upgrade. The upgrade went ok but now I'm seeing a message that Windows is not activated. I call Microsoft and they said it is a volume license key and I need the retail key. I called Staples - no luck.

The one I can't try is the system refresh because the windows tiles don't work which mean I can't open PC Settings to get that started.
Is there a way I can do this without having to open PC Settings which wont actually open.
i have windows 8 installed and would love to upgrade to windows 8.1 but because the tiles dont work i cant open the windows store. Just like most people out there the other tiles work like chrome etc just not the standard windows 8 ones. no i dont have any additional antivirus or firewalls turned on. Yes I've tried to reset the tile service, yes I've tried the app diagnostic tool. Nothing is working.
Which partition should be active partition in windows 8....out these 5 partitions C:OS, pbr image , WINRETOOLS ,DIAGS and ESP??
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust purchased a new Inspiron Desktop from Dell and the Windows 8 setup was all going well...
1) set up computer account OK using existing hotmail account - accesses email Ok
2) reach stage of wanting to transfer user files from external hard disk
3) notice that top-level user directory and below on new machine are all read-only so figure I should turn that off
4) system starts changing attributes for hundreds(?) of files - I was only expecting a few directories to be affected so I cancel that process and set all back to read-only and load user files
5) BUT... accessing email from the start page now just hangs - sits there with the rotating circles - everything else functioning OK
6) ran out of time so figure I'll investigate later - turn off system
7) now try to login on startup and after accepting account password it just sits there. Occasionally the start screen (with blank icons) is flashed up very briefly.
8) Do some of the files under the user directory need to have write access? But how can I now gain access to them if I can't get into the machine?
I can't upgrade to 8.1 as it is not in the store.
I occasionally get a banner message telling me I can upgrade to 8.1 and I should go to the store, but there is no update
On my v131, I newly installed windows 8, then I can't find the quickset for win8, so I installed quickset for win7. It partially works, because when I press the "wrench" button, it will trigger dell support center, but when I press the "gears" button, it won't trigger the quickset.exe but as the action as "winkey+x".
how to make it work again?
I'm thinking of buying a new Dell desktop but not interested in Windows 8. With my current Dell desktop I have the Windows 7 OEM disk for reinstallation. Could I use that disk to install Windows 7 on a new Dell PC (or maybe even just a partition of it) or will it refuse to install because it's a different machine?

View 8 Replies View RelatedXPS-15 L521X running Windows 8 Pro. I have Intel Rapid Storage Manager installed and operating (thinking this may matter). I have tried 4 times to upgrade to 8.1, no-go. It completes the upgrade to the point of restarting after making all configurations (according to the message text), but on restart it goes from Dell logo to blank screen, though I can hear the disk churning, and the mouse shows when I swipe the keypad; mouse also shows a busy indicator. I tried leaving the system alone last night for 6 hours, but when I came back it was still churning on the blank screen. When I shut down the system via power button and re-booted, it restored the original windows 8 and gave me a message that the system could not be upgraded to 8.1.
I tried uninstalling my firewall/virus program and that didn't work. At this point I don't care to guess anymore... I may call tech support and see what they say. I see by others' posts around the internet that there seem to many problems upgrading to 8.1.
I am running Windows v 8.1, would like to go back more than one restore point, and cannot do so.
When I click System/System Protection, click the [System Restore] button and choose the "Choose a different restore point" radio button, I am only offered a single restore point. I understand that some users also see a radio box reading "Show more restore points," but I have no such option. Is there a download available or some other way to see more than one restore point? I tried restoring in the hope that I could then see a prior restore point, but not such luck. The reason I need to do so is that I'm getting an annoying malware pop up in my browser and going back a restore point (or two) seems to be the only way I can find to make them stop displaying.
I have old Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop. It had windows xp sp3 and I upgraded it to windows 8 Pro. After upgrading I noticed the brightness icon on the settings had unavailable written on it. I am unable to change the brightness setting. When I point the mouse on top of the brightness icon, it reads Windows cannot adjust the brightness on this display. Also the functions keys on the keyboard for brightness don't work. Is the problem with my Quickset Driver ?
Other than this issue the laptop is working fine. The audio is working.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a month old Dell XPS 8700 with Windows 8 (later updated to 8.1). The computer has been super. While running Acronis True Image, the computer crashed. Now, the screen shows only Dell logo. No Windows 8. Unlike Windows XP or 7, booting from CDROM is not possible unless wind0ows 8 is running. The computer came with "windows 8 Recovery Media" DVD disk. But it does not boot from DVD ROM. Shift +F8 does not respond. It seems that my computer is dead. I wonder how I can start Windows 8.

Have been on tech support three times still not solved. They sent a USB recovery drive and does not boot. They sent an optical drive and the windows recovery disc; still not working! Not a novice at this but fully stumped. Cannot get to a C prompt, cannot get into Safe mode. Am able to get into BIOS but is limited in what can be done there. Diagnostics says everything is fine. Am ready to go back to Windows 7 until they work the bugs out.
View 2 Replies View RelatedCant get any sound via built in speaker or headphone jack. Have checked settings through speaker volume icon lower task bar, Dell Audio control icon, and checked for audio enabled or not through device manager/soundvideogamecontrollers/Realtek high def sound etc. All looks perfect.
This loss of sound MAY have happened after running SUPERAntiSpyware that my ex-computer "expert" installed and instructed me to run regularly. I lost sound also when he last serviced my computer and installed SUPERantispyware (among other unknown things he did), but he somehow restored the sound through changing a power management option I think. I just tried that again to no luck.
But what it means when someone says "install new drivers" or "reinstall drivers" - my Windows 8 came preloaded and upgrade to 8.1 has failed twice so I gave up - nothing to do with this problem arising though.
Over the last several days I have been attempting to update windows to 8.1. It starts, tells me that it is installing. At this point I have been unable to stay through the length of the install to see the point that the crash actually happens.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a new laptop with Windows 8 and I really like it. I also have an older Dell Inspiron 1521 with an AMD 64 bit processor, 4 gig of RAM and a 160 gig SSD. It runs Win7 just fine and I believe it will run Windows 8. My new laptop came with 8 installed so I don't have a box to check the low end specs for running 8. I have Linux on it now and I would like to run both. It boots in to Linux in 20 seconds, about the same time as my new Windows 8 laptop.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy wife got a new Dell XPS laptop from her employer. A very impressive bit of kit with Windows 8, 64 bit, masses of RAM and many, many processor cores (dreadful touchpad though ). And 1TB HDD.
She asked me to set up it the same way as her existing Windows 7 laptop, so a fun few hours discovering how the charms bar works (before giving up on that and going for Start8) and installing various bits. I then decided to partition the huge drive so the OS and program files are on one partition which can be imaged and restored with Acronis as required while all the jpgs mp3s docxs etc remain safe on the second partition (every computer in out home is set up this way and I've found it to be the best method).
I shrank the partition as much as possible and ended up with 400 GB before immovable files put a stop to that - needlessly large I thought so I installed EASEUS partition manager which I have used with W7 without problem (can you see my obvious mistake yet?) and set it for a 200 GB partition, started it going and popped back five minutes later expecting to find everything as desired. Instead the laptop no longer believed it had a HDD. The current situation is that the machine is pretty much as wanted except the partition sizes aren't as required and no Acronis image has been made.
So, the questions this experience raises are:
1. Did the drive fail or did EASEUS break it? (If it was just waiting to fail my opinion is that it's good to find out so early on and not when it was full of data that hadn't been backed up).
2. Which partition managers are safe to use with the combination of Windows 8 and UEFI that Dell have produced? I'm somewhat nervous of just experimenting on this point.
3. Is Acronis safe to use with Windows 8 and UEFI.
