Dell :: Restore Installation Disk For Windows 8 From Corrupted HD

Jul 24, 2014

Running Windows 8 on an Inspiron 15 and the hard drive crashed (cannot boot).  Of course, I did not make backup Recovery DVDs, and I am beyond the warranty period so cannot get them from Dell.  However, I was able to boot the system running Linux, create a RAW image file of the OS partition, and then was able to recover my data files.  Which made me wonder--are there files in separate partitions that could be recovered to create a recovery/restore disk?  My goal is to replace the hard drive and reinstall Windows 8 on the new drive (assuming that the product key, which I do not have, will reactivate automatically.)

I haven't seen anything in the forums about this approach to generating reinstall disks.

My alternative, since I have been able to recover my user files, is to purchase a new laptop.

Windows 8 On Dell Inspiron - Boot To Repair Disk To Restore Image?

Dec 26, 2013

On my friend's Dell Inspiron laptop, Windows 8 will not boot. I want to boot to the repair disk to restore an image I had created. F12 on boot does not show the DVD drive as an option. I went into Setup/Boot and disabled Secure Boot, still did not show the DVD as a boot option. I went back to Setup and selected Boot List Option>Legacy. Now it shows the DVD drive as an option to boot. I booted the repair dis, went through all the dialogs to select the image I had created, but when it goes to restore it it says it cannot because the image was made in UEFI, and it is now set for BIOS.

I went back into Setup/Boot and I see that the option Load Legacy Option ROM is now Enabled, it did it on its own. As a test I set it back to the defaults and re did it as above, and again it automatically changes Load Legacy Option ROM, which I assume is what is creating the problem.

So my question is what do I need to do to boot from the Windows Repair Disk?

Security :: All System Restore Points Are Corrupted

Jan 1, 2014

I have a .dll which I use to Show sort headings in all views (Win 8, File Explorer)?

I recently had to reset my Internet Explorer settings to remove Conduit Search hijacker. This stopped explorer7fixes.dll from working in File Explorer, because it was loaded into IE as an 'addon'. Now I cannot get it to work no matter how much I unregister and re-register the Explorer7Fixes.1.0.0.2 version of the .dll, and this is even after restarting explorer.exe/restarting/shutting down.

System Restore fixed this problem for me the last time it happened (I restored back to a time when explorer7fixes.dll was working), but it appears that won't work this time as my restore points are corrupted. Gives the error code (0x81000201)

Setup Installation :: Dell XPS 8300 - Restore Or Obtain Recovery Partition?

Dec 8, 2013

I have Dell XPS 8300 and made a set of dvds when I got the machine. I don't remember if I made them before or after a Dell tech deleted my recovery partition.I have since made a Win 8 dvd from the downloaded iso file and using the library, moved to Win 8.1.

I am asking if there is a way I can restore or obtain the recovery partition.I have the original Win 7 cd, the 2 dvds I made when I got the pc and the Win 8 dvd I created. If the recovery partition is not in the Win 7 dvds(as I said above) is there any way to get that partition back?

When I moved from Win 7 to 8 with the disc I did not see any opportunity to create this recovery disc. I thought if I selected 'custom' after 0 unallocated space, then 'drive options adv', 'new' and 'apply' it would be automatically created.I never saw anything like that so just 'next it' to Win 8.

P.S. I have a Dell Laptop which is similar to the desktop and it has the recovery partition.

Create Repair Rescue Disk Windows 8 To Restore Registry ONLY?

How create a repair rescue disk Windows 8 to restore Registry ONLY?

''Have a new HP Envy 15t-J100. Has a Recovery Partition. I created a Boot USB stick. Fine

I recall with other Windows versions & and such you could create a repair/rescue CD that basically allowed you to restore your settings to an earlier Registry Restore Point.

Will the Recovery Manager (on USB) do this as well?

Dell :: Windows 8.1 - Seeing More Restore Points

Aug 31, 2014

I am running Windows v 8.1, would like to go back more than one restore point, and cannot do so.

When I click System/System Protection, click the [System Restore] button and choose the "Choose a different restore point" radio button, I am only offered a single restore point. I understand that some users also see a radio box reading "Show more restore points," but I have no such option. Is there a download available or some other way to see more than one restore point? I tried restoring in the hope that I could then see a prior restore point, but not such luck. The reason I need to do so is that I'm getting an annoying malware pop up in my browser and going back a restore point (or two) seems to be the only way I can find to make them stop displaying.

Network / Sharing :: Restore System Image From Disk That Is Not Shared?

May 15, 2014

I have two hard disks, and I have a system image that I made of the OS, it is stored on the second disk, the one without the OS. Both disks have sharing turned off.

What happens if I can't boot into Windows, and I want to use EaseUS backup to restore my system? Will I be able to access the system image, if I boot from the EaseUS live CD? Or will I be denied access, because it is not a shared disk?

And generally speaking, is it advisable to have sharing turned off, or on? I am not on a network, but I have several user accounts on the same OS. What security settings are good for my situation.

Okay, experience is the best tutor. I booted from the CD to see what would happen, and yes, it can read the system image file off of the hard disk. But I would still like to know what are the security settings for sharing etc.

Dell :: How To Add SSD As Boot Disk On New XPS 8700 With Windows 8

Sep 19, 2013

I just got a new XPS 8700 with Windows 8.  I have an SSD drive from the Windows 7 system that it is replacing that I want to use as the boot and C drive of the system.  The XPS 8700 is new, so I don't need to preserve any data on it.

I made a set of recovery DVDs. I disconnected the hard disk and installed the SSD.  I followed the instructions on the youtube video "Windows 8 Restoring From Dell Recovery Media ."  I choose the factory refresh option (only restores system partition) when it appeared.  It went through the entire restore process and appeared to work.  It took a long time, no errors were reported and it said recovery completed.    When I rebooted, the system was running Windows 7 from the old system the SSD came from.

There are only two partitions on the SSD, a 100 MB boot partition and a 80 something GB system partition.  If it didn't put Windows 8 on the SSD, what was it doing all the time it said it was "preparing your hard drive", restoring your system" and "finalizing"?

I then booted from a Partition Wizard bootable DVD and deleted all the partitions on  the SSD and wiped it (overwrite the disk with 0's).  I tried the recovery process and this time it did not give me the choice of factory refresh or factory recovery.  It just says "your drive size is not supported for this process.  Please use a hard drive of at least 931 GB in size."  Why on earth does it need such a large disk size to recover?

How do I get my SSD set up?

Updates :: Windows 8 On Dell Laptop Fails To Update / Repair Or Restore

Sep 15, 2014

I am attempting to repair a Dell Inspiron 5520 Laptop for a friend of mine.

He's been having issues updating it for sometime and when he called me he was having a "Windows update hasn't been able to check for new updates for 30 days" pop-up appearing every few seconds that was rendering the laptop almost unusable.

I managed to stop that by disabling automatic updates. When I attempted a manual update I got the message :

Windows could not search for new updates: Error Found Code 80070BC9

Other times it would say it needed to be restarted and would go into a restart loop that was generally
Restart one - no message
Restart two - configuring updates - 33%, 67%, 100%
Restart three - failed to configure updates - reverting - restarting
Then would go to the normal login screen

I tried SFC /Scannow which seemed to work and say a restart is needed to implement changes but then fails on restart

DISM didn't work when attempting to run it from the machine but got to 100% when I ran it from my own Windows 8 install disk but then failed and needed a restart to undo the changes.

I also tried a repair and a restore of the current Windows installation but got : Error Code: 80070490 both times

The laptop didn't come with an install disk or serial so it seems restoring it from external media may be out of the question?

Dell XPS 12 Running Windows 8 X64 - Disk Checking Endless Loop

May 18, 2013

Dell XPS 12 running Windows 8 x64. Had it for about six weeks, and I had two problems I with it:

- every so often (maybe once a week), when I would turn it on, instead of booting into my normal startup screen, it would say 'Preparing Windows', then boot into, like, a generic account with none of my programs or files or anything... shutting down and restarting fixes that problem. A little annoying, but no big deal.

- every so often (maybe twice a week), I I'd shut it down, and I'd get the BSOD, with 'SESSION_HAS_VALID_POOL_ON_EXIT' given as the problem. I bit of Googling seemed to reveal that this was a fairly common issue with Wi8 on this particular machine, so I never worried too much about it.

I'm describing these problems because they might shed light on the NEWEST problem, which is as follows:

Did a Windows 8 update yesterday, and today I discovered that when I turn the machine on, I get 'To skip disk checking, press any key within 1 second' at the Dell startup screen... I didn't press anything, but it didn't seem to go into disk-check, booting normally into Windows instead. I tried to do a disk check, and right away, it told me 'Windows has found problems with your disk', telling me I had to restart to fix them... so I did, and got the same 'To skip disk checking...' message, followed by an immediate boot into Windows instead of any disk checking. I tried to do a system restore, thinking one of the updates might be causing the problem, but when I try to do a system restore, it tells me that I have to run check-disk first (but every time I do, I get the same routine I just described above).

Dell :: Windows 8.1 Stuck On Gray Wait Screen - Auto Repair And System Restore Won't Work

Jun 8, 2014

I have a Dell laptop Inspiron 15R 7537 that came with Windows 8. Yesterday I upgraded to Windows 8.1. Everything seemed to work fine after the upgrade. I shut down and re-booted several times with no issues. When I turned the computer on as usual today, I got the log in screen, then it briefly went to the desktop, then came a gray screen that blocks 99% of the desk top. This gray screen says "please wait" and has a cancel button at the bottom. It hangs forever and the cancel button doesn't work. It gives no other information.

I read several threads on the Microsoft Windows forum and this seems to be a common problem. How to boot using the Windows 8 recovery media disk that came with the Dell computer. I selected Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, then Automatic Repair. I got a message that it couldn't do an automatic repair, so that didn't work. Next I tried System Restore, but I got a message that there were no restore points available from which to restore. Just to clarify - the Recovery Media Disk I have from Dell is for Windows 8 - not 8.1 - so maybe that's the problem.

The computer is totally worthless the way it is now, so unless there is some fix for the hanging gray screen in Windows 8.1, I would be happy just to reload the original Windows 8 Operating System. At least that worked.

Dell :: Inspiron N5010 - Error 0x400110020000100a During Restore

I wanted to restore my laptop back to factory settings before passing on to a friend, but when running the DataSafe restore software something went wrong and the laptop will no longer boot...doesn't seem to recognise that the hard disk is there.

BIOS settings recognise the disk and going into Boot Options (F12) I can get to diagnostics which gets as far as the memory tests then the processor overheats and the laptop shuts down (which was why I got a new laptop in the first place!)

Fortunately (I thought) I have the Recovery DVD that I created when first used the laptop, that boots fine and but when try to restore to factory settings it produces the error 0x400110020000100a as soon as the formatting screen comes up.

The laptop is an Inspiron N5010 if that makes any difference.
