I am thinking of installing a new hard drive to my Dell XPS 8500 (replacing the one that came with my system).
I have made DVD's that will install the factory image using Dell backup. If I install a new hard drive can I use these DVD's to install Windows 8 (the factory image) to my new hard drive?
I have a Inspiron 3521 laptop and I am doing a factory restore as mentioned in this article. [URL] .....
But in the Step 9, 'select the backup you want to use in the list below', I get empty list. Does that mean my laptop doesn't have a factory image?
I have a XPS 8500 with preinstalled windows 8. I tried to install Ubuntu 12.10 on it. When I partitioned the disk, I accidentally format the whole disk. Then I could not restart to Windows 8. I didn't make any backup or recovery media. How to restore factory image?

I know there is good software out there to clone/image my hard drive and restore it to a new SSD drive. I'm just wondering though, since my laptop is brand new, I made a full recovery to a USB drive and included the OEM recovery partition.
Couldn't I just swap out the old HDD with the new SSD and boot with the recovery stick and do a full recovery back to the new SSD?
Also, however I do this, recover or image backup/restore, do I need to do some type of SSD alignment? I can't find a clear answer on that.
I am selling my Acer acer m5-481pt-6644 and want to do a factory image restore so the buyer can set it up for themselves.
I have done plenty of image restores on Win 7, but always gone all the way through.
Can I turn the laptop off at some point before I fully set it up, so the buyer will get to set it up for themselves?

I have a new XPS L521X that came with Windows 8. I hate Windows 8 so I decided to install a generic copy of Windows 7 the other day. I'm now having issues with Windows 7 and would like to factory restore the system, but since windows 7 overwrote the MBR, I am not able to access the Dell recovery. The hard drive still has the PBR Image partition, I just don't know how to boot from it. How I can boot into the Dell recovery and restore back to Windows 8? Is there some sort of UEFI boot option I can just add in the BIOS?

This resulted in my external hard drive being partitioned into DBR_Master (F), which used 31.5 GB of the 1TB hard drive; and, DBR_Boot (G), using 23.6 MB. What is DBR_Master (F) all about? What is DBR_Boot (G) all about? In the event of an OS crash, will I be able to re-boot from the external hard drive? How often is it recommended to do a full system backup?
Since a system backup does not backup applications like MS-Office, is the purpose of periodic backups to capture future fixes & revisions to the OS? Since there is still a lot of unused space on the external hard drive, is it ok to save my daily data backups to the external hard drive? I tried to save data backups using File History to the DBR_Master (F) drive but it would not let me. I created a new folder in DBR_Master (F) but that didn't work. I receive a message that the destination was not connected. Where should I save daily data backups? Last question - does it matter whether I use File History or Dell Backup and Recovery to do daily data backups? On my friend's Dell Inspiron laptop, Windows 8 will not boot. I want to boot to the repair disk to restore an image I had created. F12 on boot does not show the DVD drive as an option. I went into Setup/Boot and disabled Secure Boot, still did not show the DVD as a boot option. I went back to Setup and selected Boot List Option>Legacy. Now it shows the DVD drive as an option to boot. I booted the repair dis, went through all the dialogs to select the image I had created, but when it goes to restore it it says it cannot because the image was made in UEFI, and it is now set for BIOS.
I went back into Setup/Boot and I see that the option Load Legacy Option ROM is now Enabled, it did it on its own. As a test I set it back to the defaults and re did it as above, and again it automatically changes Load Legacy Option ROM, which I assume is what is creating the problem.
So my question is what do I need to do to boot from the Windows Repair Disk?
I have 2 hard drives in my computer, my main Windows 8 C:, and a win7/game/data drive, the second of which is failing. reports show it is failing a smart short test, and although it has been running fine for months, i figured i would replace it with my tax return.
My question: If i create a system image of C: and D:, would it be possible to just restore the D: portion of the image, or do I have to restore both, then delete the second C: on the new drive? i do not have the resources or courage to test this on my system now because I am not sure what this reformat, and with my luck, the drive would die during the restore.
Recently i upgraded my system to windows 8..N after clean install i backed up the copy of my C drive (Includes System Image) to my external 2TB Hard Drive.. It took around 250GB of hard drive space..Now since i am running out of space i decided to delete the back up copy from My hard drive.. I deleted WindowsImageBackup and all associated files using control panel..But around 150GB space is missing(not visible) from my external Hard Drive..
As You can see from attached pic that 125 GB free out of 1.81TB..But size of all files including hidden files is 1.53TB..
Win 8.1 ProThe system allows system image backup done on either external hard drive ( which I do every week ), or on DVDs. Why it does not allow USB flash drive ? I tried to use a 32 GB flash and it refuses to do backup on it.

The issue is that my solid state hard drive was reduced by about 20 Gigs! I even deleted the other restore points and rebooted, but my hard drive has about 136 gigs of space. Before the restore, it was 156.
Does windows restore really eat up this much hard drive space? Is there a way to get it back?
I recently installed a HD (WD25EZRX). it's been operating normally for about 2 days.
i was using my comp when i saw an alert that said something about a hard drive error and that my PC needed to be reset to fix it. so i reset the PC and saw another message saying something about restoring to a previous point. i wasn't really thinking and i clicked OK.
upon reset, i noticed the HD in question was now showing up as 1.36TB (it's a 2.5TB HD). it also has a bunch of files from another HD, which is odd.
i've used Error Checking under Tools of the HD's Properties, but the results showed no errors.
i'd like to regain the "lost" capacity w/o having to reformat my entire HD.

I have an Inspiron 14Z 5423, and my hard drive crashed, after running the dell diagnostic tool, it pops up an error code 2000-0142 when it starts analyzing the hard drive, but despite this, i can still access the hard drive using Ubuntu Live DVD ...
Any ways, i noticed there is a second hard drive/partition of 32 GO which i think is supposed to contain the OS image or something similar, so if i buy a new hard drive, could i recover my original windows OS ?!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently called Dell support about my Inspiron 15R SE not booting and they determined my hard drive had crashed. They shipped a new hard drive to me and got me to install it but I had problems installing windows 8 as it was factory installed using UEFI.
Windows 8 setup would start but immediately gave an error about missing a media driver. The driver and utility discs I was provided did not seem to work at all. I called Dell support again but the guy I was talking to just told me that UEFI was confusing and told me to go into bios and change to legacy boot, which worked and I am now running windows 8 in legacy boot mode.
But is there a way I can reinstall in UEFI? From my brief research, it seems to be more efficient... Is there a driver I am missing that wouldn't be on the windows or driver and utilitys discs?
Doesn't seem like phone support people know much about UEFI ...
I got the replacement hard drive from Dell that I was told would come with Windows 8 and drivers preinstalled. Well I installed the hard drive and it tells me that NO OS can be found. I didn't have a chance to make backup discs of my own but Dell sent a Windows 8 Recovery Media CD with the laptop and now with the replacement hard drive.
When trying to install Windows 8 onto the new hard drive I get to the part where it tells me to choose a partition to install Windows 8 on and none of them will let me. There are 5 to choose from and I don't know what to do to get past this. The biggest partition which is 5 has about 934GB of space left out of 1TB but as I mentioned I can't choose it or any of the other ones for installation.
I've never had trouble like this reinstalling other versions of Windows.
I recently purchased a dell inspiron 14 5000 with a windows 8.1 preinstalled; I would like to reinstall the operating system and partition the hard, but I didn't get a copy of Windows (and a disc would not be actually useful since the laptop doesn't have a CD unit) which is the easiest way to reconfigure my laptop?

I have restored the computer once using acer recovery media but there are still partitions from previous install and i have no access to the original factory recovery partition either. Id like to know how to fully reformat the entire disk and restore the recovery media back to 8.0 with the correct manufacturer drivers and then reinstall my purchased 8.0 pro upgrade without losing my drivers from acer... lastly then continue to and upgrade to the 8.1 Pro finally. As of now when i upgraded to 8.0 pro it deleted all my OEM ACER drivers and factory programs and now windows has replaced with best effort drivers and i dont know what drives should be there and what are incorrect at this point.

But during the install i had to delete all partitions and that was the recovery partition that had he recovery software on it. Well now I want to go back to Windows 8 and I don't really want to send my PC to Samsung for re imaging. But I have the image i made with the software before I installed Windows 8. All I need is to get the recover partition back with the software on it. I have 2 other Samsung computers that have the same software on it but I need to find a way to make a image of the recover partition so i can use my backup image for the computer.

I would like a FREE way of either putting a clean install of win8 back on or just removing all the info. Of course there are no backups on here either.
