I recently purchased a dell inspiron 14 5000 with a windows 8.1 preinstalled; I would like to reinstall the operating system and partition the hard, but I didn't get a copy of Windows (and a disc would not be actually useful since the laptop doesn't have a CD unit) which is the easiest way to reconfigure my laptop?

View 15 Replies View RelatedI recently called Dell support about my Inspiron 15R SE not booting and they determined my hard drive had crashed. They shipped a new hard drive to me and got me to install it but I had problems installing windows 8 as it was factory installed using UEFI.
Windows 8 setup would start but immediately gave an error about missing a media driver. The driver and utility discs I was provided did not seem to work at all. I called Dell support again but the guy I was talking to just told me that UEFI was confusing and told me to go into bios and change to legacy boot, which worked and I am now running windows 8 in legacy boot mode.
But is there a way I can reinstall in UEFI? From my brief research, it seems to be more efficient... Is there a driver I am missing that wouldn't be on the windows or driver and utilitys discs?
Doesn't seem like phone support people know much about UEFI ...
I have a 1TB hard drive with a lot of free space, and I would like to use some of this space to set up a home server that I will eventually publish a web site to. I'm very new to setting up home servers but I read something about setting up a storage pool in order to set up a server.

A user that works at our company brought their personal laptop in, the hard drive failed hard drive tests so we have put one of our spare hard drives in and now we need to re-install Windows 8 x64.
Where do i get the installation media from if the users doesn't have a disc? Is it possible or do we need to order a disc?
I have a newer Toshiba laptop that I tried to clean reinstall Windows 8 using the "reset" feature. I wiped the hard drive completely deleting all partitions. Now I cannot boot into anything. Short of ordering recovery dvds from Toshiba, is there a legal way to reinstall Windows 8 back on this laptop?

How do I transfer my license to allow a reinstallation on the second hard drive? That's the best option, so I can go back to the first drive if I want to.
Second option: If I wipe the current windows partition clean, will that enable me to reinstall on the second hard drive?
I just upgraded my Dell to windows 8 because I just recently bought my computer and at the time windows 8 was not out yet. I've upgraded my computer and I have no DVD/CD drive detected. I cannot use my CD/DVD drive on my computer at all. Nothing is showing up, what's up with that? This is the drive that came with my computer so why can't I use it? I put a CD/DVD into it and nothing happens. I go into my computer and there is absolutely no CD/DVD drive detected. What do I do now? I need my CD/DVD drive to work. What I can do to make it work? View 2 Replies View RelatedMy wife got a new Dell XPS laptop from her employer. A very impressive bit of kit with Windows 8, 64 bit, masses of RAM and many, many processor cores (dreadful touchpad though ). And 1TB HDD.
She asked me to set up it the same way as her existing Windows 7 laptop, so a fun few hours discovering how the charms bar works (before giving up on that and going for Start8) and installing various bits. I then decided to partition the huge drive so the OS and program files are on one partition which can be imaged and restored with Acronis as required while all the jpgs mp3s docxs etc remain safe on the second partition (every computer in out home is set up this way and I've found it to be the best method).
I shrank the partition as much as possible and ended up with 400 GB before immovable files put a stop to that - needlessly large I thought so I installed EASEUS partition manager which I have used with W7 without problem (can you see my obvious mistake yet?) and set it for a 200 GB partition, started it going and popped back five minutes later expecting to find everything as desired. Instead the laptop no longer believed it had a HDD. The current situation is that the machine is pretty much as wanted except the partition sizes aren't as required and no Acronis image has been made.
So, the questions this experience raises are:
1. Did the drive fail or did EASEUS break it? (If it was just waiting to fail my opinion is that it's good to find out so early on and not when it was full of data that hadn't been backed up).
2. Which partition managers are safe to use with the combination of Windows 8 and UEFI that Dell have produced? I'm somewhat nervous of just experimenting on this point.
3. Is Acronis safe to use with Windows 8 and UEFI.
I have an Inspiron 14Z 5423, and my hard drive crashed, after running the dell diagnostic tool, it pops up an error code 2000-0142 when it starts analyzing the hard drive, but despite this, i can still access the hard drive using Ubuntu Live DVD ...
Any ways, i noticed there is a second hard drive/partition of 32 GO which i think is supposed to contain the OS image or something similar, so if i buy a new hard drive, could i recover my original windows OS ?!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just received my Inspiron 15z with 32GB mSATA and 500GB HDD, and I was disappointed to find that Windows 8 is installed on the 500GB (presumably 5400 RPM) HDD. For performance sake, I expected that the OS would be installed on the mSATA drive.
I'm not sure the best way to fix this with the Recovery Media, as I've never done this before. I don't want to run into Windows activation issues, but I want to do a clean installation using the mSATA drive as my OS drive.
I don't really care about the recovery partition, since it's apparently configured incorrectly (in my opinion). I just want the OS on the mSATA drive.
I got the replacement hard drive from Dell that I was told would come with Windows 8 and drivers preinstalled. Well I installed the hard drive and it tells me that NO OS can be found. I didn't have a chance to make backup discs of my own but Dell sent a Windows 8 Recovery Media CD with the laptop and now with the replacement hard drive.
When trying to install Windows 8 onto the new hard drive I get to the part where it tells me to choose a partition to install Windows 8 on and none of them will let me. There are 5 to choose from and I don't know what to do to get past this. The biggest partition which is 5 has about 934GB of space left out of 1TB but as I mentioned I can't choose it or any of the other ones for installation.
I've never had trouble like this reinstalling other versions of Windows.
I have a Dell Inspiron 7720 Win 8 x64 PC which includes UEFI (described in Microsoft link below). However, UEFI is accessed on Win 8 from Settings Charm > "Change PC Settings". This requires that you have booted the system already. In case of a main disk crash, you need to boot from another drive, like a thumb drive.
During restart my Dell PC displays "F12 Boot Options" in lower right of screen during restart, but multiple presses of F12 during startup are ignored. Likewise when I try F1 or F2 during startup. So I have no way to specify an alternate boot drive.

I used a program to extract the keys, but it seems that the media center add-on has overridden the pro key and it wont let me install windows. I noticed it gave me an internet explorer key that was different from the win8 key, but it rejected that too.
Is there a way to extract the original win8 pro key? I couldn't seem to find anything with google.

It runs Win7 just fine and I believe it will run Windows 8. My new laptop came with 8 installed so I don't have a box to check the low end specs for running 8. I have Linux on it now and I would like to run both. It boots in to Linux in 20 seconds, about the same time as my new Windows 8 laptop.

Windows was booted ones and it was all fine but when i restarted the computer it consistently led to the screen "your pc ran into problem and needs to restart...." I tried turning back to ISRT and same, I reinstalled windows and turn the acceleration of but after installing the driver an error was occurred says "your computer does t meat the minimum requirements....".
I turned back to ISRT and tried to install the windows again but it could not find the hard drive even after browsing through usb (it was loading and loading but didn't find anything) and now i really don't know what to do...

No matter, I had the recovery media... I made a full system restore... and nothing... it still does not boot.

Dell Diagnostics accused no trouble whatsoever, all the tests performed successfully.
After a lot of tinkering, I managed to go back to Windows 7, the system runs fine, but I am running a trial license of Win 7, as I have not yet bought a license (I actually tried restoring the system using the Dell generated backup disks AND the Windows 8 OEM Disk, provided after those did not work).
What could be preventing Windows 8 from booting, since neither the installation fails, nor the HDD acuses any problem?
I have an Inspiron One 2305 All in One with touch display and was planning to upgrade to Windows 8. However, I just noticed on the Dell Support site that they do not support the upgrade, and thus, don't recommend owners of this computer doing the upgrade.
