System Mirror Onto Non-NTFS Format HDD?
Jan 30, 2012
I have a new windows 7 64-bit computer and two 4-year old external Western Digital HDDs. They connect fine and transfer data okay except when i try to do a Windows system mirror. All was well with XP Pro and the same HDDs but Windows 7 tells me the HDDs are not formatted to NTFS.Firstly, what does this mean as i would really like a system mirror and secondly, is there a way round it withpout formatting the HDDs and losing all the data?

My drive passed SMART extended self test that scans the entire disk surface. Is the full format with command FORMAT FS=NTFS overkill?

I have a second hard drive that is formatted FAT32 and I need to reformat it to NTFS so I can install Windows XP as a dual boot option. It shows 146GB of 148GB free space; however, when I open the drive it says "This folder is empty". I once had Ubuntu installed and reformatted the drive, but it may be hidden somewhere on the drive. I have tried to reformat by right clicking the drive letter and using the format command, but I get an error message "Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.". When I check the drive for contents using CMD it says "Volume in drive is New Volume Directory of D: File Not Found". When I try to format D: from the C: prompt, it says "Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode." I am logged on as Administrator

I have Windows 7 on my main machine and am using a spare drive right now. Power went out and when I turned my computer back on, it wouldn't start so I removed the HDD and plugged it into test computer which was when I found it had become a RAW file system.Alright, so basically I'm wondering how I should convert my RAW drive back into NTFS so I can use it again and I'm not interested in retrieving information as I had nothing of value on that drive, because all important stuff is on my storage drive - which is 1TB in size. I have tried a variety of methods including.
1. Using Disk Management, even though it recognizes it and shows it as a RAW format - I am unable to format it as it gives me a "Format could not be succesfully completed" error message, also deleting and making new partitions has no effect.
2. Tried using DOS to convert it from RAW to NTFS
3. Tried using programs like PTDD Partition Table Doctor and EASUES Partition Master to rebuild the partitions, fix the Master Boot Record and then convert to either FAT32 or NTFS (if it's FAT32 I'll convert it to NTFS afterwards)
4. Tried to format from the "My Computer" window via right-clicking and selecting "Format"
5. According to TestDisk I have 0 partitions and when I do a deep search it forks of a load of read errors. :
As far as I know, PPTD Partition Table Doctor tells me that there sector count is incorrect and that the MBR is in the the wrong section. If you want my system specifications, Here:
Windows 7 64-bit
AMD Athlon X2 6400+ 3.2GH
6GB DDR2 RAM 667
BFG GTX 260 (216) OCX
1TB Green Cavier Western Digital
80GB Seagate Barracuda (Now in RAW format)

I had to use my thumb drive to upload files to a Mac, so I reformatted the drive to FAT32. Now I'm trying to get it back to NTFS so I can use again on my Win 7 machine, but the drive is not even showing up in My Computer.
The Drive shows in Device Manager and in Disk Management, but offers me no option to format.

Disk 0 contains two partitions: System Reserved (active) and C: Disk 0 is dynamic
Disk 2 is unallocated Only the System Reserved partition can be mirrored, "add mirror..." on C: is greyed out. If I mirror System Reserved, I still can't mirror C:
I am guessing if I make C: active, my system won't boot?

This is an issue with trying to use the Windows Backup utility with an external hard drive (Seagate GoFlex Desk) with more than 2TB of storage (in this case 3TB). I have looked into this and found that this is a common problem related to the backup utility being unable to deal with drives that have a 4kb allocation unit size. The typical advice is to reformat with an allocation size of 512B, which it will be able to work with.
The problem is that Windows will not let me reformat with that size. The smallest unit it allows is 4kb, which is exactly the problem. If I initiate the format dialog on other NTFS drives I have, 512B shows up as an option. Just not on my external. And yet, this solution appears all over the place and people have claimed it solved their problem. I have even (twice) tried creating a second partition on the external (1.5TB and then 1TB), neither has allowed an allocation unit size less than 4k, even though my 1TB internal drive did allow this.
I am not really interested in third party backup or imaging programs. With my old 500GB external, I used the Windows Backup utility to make a few system images and there have been at least two situations where a bad driver or something has resulted in having to go back to a restore point, but finding no suitable ones available, and thus restoring to the backup image. This has been the simplest way of recovering from these disasters and it has worked every time. For normal file backups, I have a number of cloud storage systems and I can use the software Seagate included with the drive. However, the one and only reason I got a hard drive this large is that it would allow me to make a lot of Windows system images, and that is the one thing I am unable to do. I do not understand why I cannot use the one fix everyone online recommends. I have emailed Seagate tech support about this but they have not responded.

I have Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit installed on DELL desktop (Optiplex 990) i7 Core. I have two HDD: Disk 0 contains the operating system 500GB. and Disk 1 empty 1TB.
I want to make a partition on disk 1 to mirror the operating system partition and keep the remaining for data storage. I tried to do but I had the following error message: "All disks holding extents for a given volume must have the same sector size, and the sector size must be valid."
I tried to attach a screen shot but couldn't.

I have a triple boot system: XP 32 bit, XP 64 bit, Win7 Pro 64 bit, each on a separate partition on separate hard drives. I can backup each of the XP OS partitions with a program I wrote that basically does a file and folder copy to a folder in a spare partition on one of the hard drives. The copy program I wrote tries to preserve time stamp and short file name info, otherwise, it's just a file and folder copy program. I use windiff to verify after a backup (or restore). For a restore, I can quick format a partition and copy the files back (using the program I wrote).
I tried doing the same with the Win 7 OS partition, backup, quick format, restore, but some of the information (metadata?) is lost. All of the actual data is there, and windiff doesn't show any differences, and Win 7 boots up, but then there are issues. ATI video driver catalyst control center fails to run (don't recall error message). The publisher information for many (or most or all) of the programs is lost, causing User Acess Control dialog box to appear anytime I tried to run a program, which should be Microsoft, but shows up as unknown. Internet Explorer 8 will state that a program has corrupted the default search provider repeatedly (even after selecting one).
So something is different between Win 7 NTFS and Win XP NTFS, or I need to enhance my copy program to copy addtional file information when doing the copies. If I get the time, I'll try a drag and drop from windows explorer in XP to see if that makes any difference. So currently I'm stuck using Win 7 system image backup for the Win 7 OS partition (it also images the C partition which contains the boot files like bootmgr).

something needed to be updated on his computer, so it was, then his computer crashed.then when it was starting up, when it started loading Windows, it would do a startup repair thingy. I tried everything I could to fix it, nothing worked. I reset/reformatted the hardware or whatever (the one that saves personal files) then when it reformatted and restarted, it would start reinstalling Windows (7 of course) and I keep getting an error message on a screen with the words 'Setup is starting services' that says 'Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this, computer, restart the application.' so I do, and then the same error message pops up after a split second again. He has a Dell (I believe,) Aspire, Intel Pentium t4500, intel GMA 4500MHD. That's all I can find out by looking at the sticker stuck inside the laptop.I wouldve come here before the format, but I barely found out about this website 20 minutes ago. Also I can run the system checker application thig for obvious reasons,

So to give an idea of whats going on: D: Drive is where Vista USED to be. C: Is where I put 7. E: Is a small drive I dropped in for XP.
Now that 7 is on C: I have no real use for Vista and want to format D: for storage of all non-system files. However its not letting me delete all the files (it shows about 50+ GB os files in D:Program Files and D:Windows from the old installation) OR Format the drive because it treats is as a system drive. Any way around this?

Computer management -> Disk management -> attach VHD The VHD attaches fine, and it is the correct file. But when it attaches I get the message: "you need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" I clicked cancel, and then tried to right click -> explore. I then got the message: "F: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."Out of all the tutorials I have read, the file should open just fine and let me explore it. Why is it asking me to format the disk? And is it safe to do so?The file system is listed as "RAW" and the status is "Healthy(primary partition)"I don't want to lose everything on the system image! Can I/should I format the disk?

So, I installed windows 7 ultimate with 2 drives. I'm running on a MB with an AHCI (ICH10R SATA controller - No extra drivers needed. Windows 7 sees the drives fine during install). It did the normal thing on 1 drive of making a system reserved partition with all the bootmgr and BCD stuff. I'm not able to mirror it. But, I was able to mirror the main installation partition.
Forward a few days - Drive 1 (the one with the "System" (BCD and bootmgr) and the main installlation) dies. Now I have another drive with just the main installation. Of course, I can't boot anymore.
OK, I think - I'll add the missing boot files to the still working drive. I boot the install CD, go into a CMD prompt. Break the mirror, and make the working partition standalone. I copy bootmgr onto the drive's root, create a "Boot" folder. A run diskpart and mark the partition as active. I run bootrec/rebuildbcd (which works and finds my installation), bootrec/fixmbr (also works) and bootrec/fixboot (also works). Great, so now I can boot?
Wrong. I just get a blinking cursor on trying to boot. I've run through the GUI repair, and still no go. I cannot figure out what's missing.
So, the bottom line is - If you're using a mirror thinking you're safe - Think again. Your data will be safe, but forget ever booting that installation again.

Im getting a new harddrive, after being annoyed endlessly by loading objects in games (5400 rpm/uber slow). However I only have the upgrade version of Windows 7 Professional. So my question is can I use Windows 7 backup image to restore the image on a different hard drive to boot from? I do have multiple computers available incase I need them.
I know the best way is to use a Drive image utility, however I am not fond of paying extra $$ since I am on a strict budget at the moment. I need alternatives to fresh install because it would take me days to redownload or reinstall all the setup.
Mostly CS4 is what concerns me (legit). Now I could have it reinstalled but I won't be able to for a while due to the missing key/discs.

I have an external harddisk that is encrypted using TrueCrypt. Each time I plug it in Windows prompts me to format the disk because it doesn't have any recognizable file system. Vista didn't use to do this. I suppose it's because of the UAC changes and a user couldn't normally do this in Vista. How to disable this prompt in Windows 7?
