just installed an asusM5A97 mobo. hdd and everything else stayed the same. problem is, it will only make it to boot screen no matter what. i tried repair and open normally but it still will not let windows boot.
View 4 RepliesI was working on setting up a PC for network usage with the understanding that it hadn't been used muchpreviously.Unfortunately I found that it had a PC name already existing on the network and went to change the PC name and IP address as needed for a static IP environmentHowever, after selecting to "restart" the system never rebooted up and I cannot seem to access the CD drive to place a restore CD or basically do anything with the PC.Any ideas on what happened?I've unplugged the computer and waited a few seconds to plug it in.Once replugged it returns to having the basic lights on it blink about once every few second and appears to be otherwise disabled.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently built my computer and installed a ssd and a hdd, the OS is on the ssd which is the c drive but since it is smaller than the hdd I tried to change the letters around and make the hdd the c drive using regedit because the default install location seems to be the c drive and after restarting the computer it boots up and says preparing your desktop then goes to a blue screen with just the cursor. I tried booting in safe mode and all I get there is a black screen also
View 9 Replies View RelatedYesterday I was attempting to wipe my hard drive as I was putting my laptop for sale. Whilst it was wiping my laptop crashed and would not re boot properly but I was able to access the BIOS . I stupidly changed some settings following some advice on a forum I now cannot find and when I tried to re boot it stays on the philips page for around 10 minutes. None of the keys work, like F12, F2 ect. After ten minutes it give me a screen thats says 1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".3.Click "Repair your computer."If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.Status: 0xc000000fThis is how I understand it as my system is in Polish and Polish is not my first language and with technical language I am not fluent and I beleive thats how I made the mistake in the first place in the BIOS.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI needed a good backup program so I downloaded a trial of MirrorFolders. I have two identical 750GB drives in my laptop: C (my main drive) and Z (my backup drive). MirrorFolders made an identical copy of C onto Z. That wasn't what I really wanted, because C is partitioned into D and E, and MirrorFolders didn't mirror the other two partitions. The backup methodology wasn't exactly what I was looking for, so I uninstalled the program. After uninstalling MirrorFolders, the machine is now booting to the Z drive, which means I can't format it and try another backup program.
Is there a simple way to restore the boot ability of my C drive? I read a great deal about copying boot folders and such, but I wasn't exactly sure if these were the right answers and I didn't want to screw things up any worse. I figured I could go into the BIOS and disable the Z drive, but no luck. The machine couldn't find a bootable drive, even though C supposedly has the same files as Z.
Spy hunter was installed and never fully installed. I removed from system but, when I startup the pc i get messeage fdisk cant find dev.sda no medium found.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed a new motherboard, CPU, memory, and video card into my computer. I'm not looking to salvage my old OS install, and have all important data backed up, so I planned to just put the hardware in and boot off my windows disk to do a format and reload. However no matter what I do I can't get windows setup or an OS to load. When loading the installer it locks up at the windows splash screen. I've tried booting off the hdd and it does the same thing. I tried it in safe mode and it locks up before it finished loading all the files. I also tried booting mini XP off my Hirens 15 disk and that locks up at the splash screen too.
So at this point I ran memtest to see if it was my ram causing problems but it all tested ok. how to boot off my disk so I can format and reload?
I'm not sure what the trigger was but my C drive where my os is installed apparently took the drive letter of an external drive that I use for backup. It is now the X drive and I cannot boot. I do get the repair screen but cannot repair as there is no operating system to choose. Booting from windows disk makes no difference here.My bios (uefi) can see the disk, I can also see it from the command prompt?

View 9 Replies View RelatedAll I did was open a video strored locally with no connection to the internet. Shut down computer properly. I go to start it up and start up repair kick in. I have let the thing run on startup repair over night and a total of 12 straight hours. It reboots once, maybe even twice. Then it just sit a says attempting repairs. I just did a hard shut done. I was able to pull the data off using Uburba (not sure of the spelling). The USB 2.0 is not recognized in start up repair command prompt. I had a image saved to a CD. I can't get past the username password. The one I had wrote down does not work. System restore fails because I can't it doesn't have a .DDL file or it says something. If I could get the USB 2.0 to work I have an external that has a couple of images that would be better than re-installing. I tried moving the image into the computer then using the image restore, but I learned that doesn't work because it somehow tracks were it wrote the image to. This is way I need the usb 2.0 to pull the image from my external HD.What is the default password of HomeGroupUser$?

Everything works properly but when I boot from XP, it is in C drive and I see Windows 7 in D drive, when I boot from Windows 7, I see win 7 in C and winXP in D drive. This is due to an overheat problem I have been experiancing since my Win 7 upgrade.I have created a new user account that I would like to run an application really smoothly so have taken some performance tweek advice and turned off the aero peak function, and most of the fancy visual apperance settings, set some services to manual and assumed it would only apply these settings for the current user, but it applies the settings to all users registered on the computer.Is it possible to set up two (or more) different accounts so one could have all the default features and visual apperance settings as standard (for email, Web browsing, media centre, gadgets, all that nice stuff), and onther user account be bare bones, no nice graphics and visuals, less defautl services but run high demand programs better?

I have tried safe mode and launching the Self launching fix which has sort of fixed the problem however it take about 40 minutes to progress from the start page to the desktop. Furthermore the toolbars don't has changed into almost a windows 98 equivalent. I launched norton and it told me my computer was at risk with problems being intrusion Prevention.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Avast AV when Norton expired. In order to activate the internet security stuff, I had to install the upgraded library file, blah, blah, blah. In order to do this, I had to show hidden folders. Having only recently begun my foray into Windows 7 (coming from XP), I was flying a bit blind. I must have hit the wrong thing. After I was able to see hidden folders, install the library file to Avast and continue on with the reboot, the desktop came up wiped clean of my documents/pics, etc and my C:\Users\Susan folder has disappeared and is now called Public. Next, I thought I may have switched my user from Susan to Public, but I have not.

What is even more stupid is I did this by making it "Load Optimal Defaults" so I dont actually know what has been changed.As a result of this windows 7 now cannot start, it brings you to the error fixing part where it searches for errors, cant find any and offers you some more options including system restore. Ive done a system restore but that has also not fixed it. I have little idea how to fix this, windows 7 was working perfectly until I changed the BIOS, but not knowing what was changed means I cant change it back.The BIOS version is: 4core1600twins-p35 p1.40.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly technical and was a network and tech Director for a few years so have some familiarity with prior Windows versions but Win 7 is a bit new to me. I went to login today, and my login picture had been changed. Looking in Windows Event Viewer under Security, I can see it occurred at 12:25 in the morning. I was on another computer at that time, and running a utility from Microsoft on the PC in question that just collects system information.I was trying to figure out why it changed and reviewing the event logs. I don't see the reason, only that an account change occurred. I replicated it by changing my picture again to another one, and the same system event occurred confirming its identity.So basically, I had a flower as the login picture. On its own, it changed to a fish. I didn't make the change. I wasn't even using this machine at that time; however a Windows utility from MS was running -- but -- I reran that same utility tonight (it's one that just reports system usage) and it did not change the picture so I believe that is coincidence. why would Windows 7 change the default logon picture for a user on its own to something else? To help with information the utility that MS had me run was the Microsoft Product Support Reports.
There are also multiple instances on this computer, the one where the picture changed on its own, of another PC that was running Windows 2000 logging into it as a SYSTEM, and then logging back out, then in and out continuously but not in a pattern that would make me think it was a process. My other machines on the network do not have that issue in the log file.I checked the McAfee Firewall, and it was enabled. It has been catching attempts to login to VNC but they've been denied. VNC is also disabled.
My System OS: Win 7 x64.All ICONs for MS apps, Snagit, UltraEdit/Compare , Adobe got wacked when I installed Solarwinds Advanced Subnet Calculator v9.0.6.I have a request out to them to see if they have any knowledge.How do I get the original icons back?I had this happen a short while back but did not know when it happened and after trying the myriad ideas that I came across on the web and thru this form learned that this seems to be a known issues and has been since Vista but no fixes surfaced.As it has been some time since my last post perhaps someone has uncovered a fix.I just tried using the restore point back to before the Solarwinds App was installed and no change so it seems that whatever files got smacked by the application install did not get changed back by the restore point operation.
