View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

I use the same password on all my computers and when I change one I change them all to the same p/w.Right now I am using Linux distro (Kubuntu) to ask for help here.I find that the change to the admin password on my Win7 drive is not happy with the new password. I went around and did them all at he same time. I can access every other OS on every drive with my new password but Win7 wont let me in. I have 3 of my daughters personal log ins and a guest log in as well as my own on win7 . I am the only admin user on the machine. Long story short, is there a fix for this or do I put a live Linux on the box and remove all my data, photos etc on to another drive and then re-install my win7. The Win7 disc is a genuine, legit paid for copy and other than this difficulty I don't have any problems with it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy idiot self put a password on my computer to protect it temporarially, then by gods sense of humor the computer shut down through loss of pwer. But the password didn't save correctly and now I can't get on my account. It's the only user, and whenever I try using safe mode with command prompt, it goes to the user log in screen, which defeats the purpose.In short, I need to reset my passdword, while not being able to log on in any way through the username. I would rather not have to wipe my harddrive, I have no recovery disc, nor partition for some reason. If I have to I will wipe my harddrive then download Windows 7 again, but I need to know how to do that first.

I thought it could be issue with key board. After login, I checked all keys are working fine.
#2.Due to issue #1, I created one more user and added it to administrator group. I am able to login to windows with this new user with password typed in keyboard. But after login when i type some characters, it displays other characters. For e.g., when I type '', it shows '#'
I recently installed Windows 7 64bit on the second partition of my main HDD. It worked flawlessly until I restarted earlier today. Now whenever I boot into Windows 7 the login screen shows up with my account, but when i attempt to enter my password the keystrokes are not registering.I have tried using all 8 usb ports in the back of my comp, but the keyboard still does not work. My usb mouse works fine. I can also boot and login to Windows XP, on the other partition with no problems, and the keyboard works fine.

->Win 7 Pro
->Boots up shows "press ctrl+alt+del" screen
->Once this is pressed, the prompt for the password does not show (mouse moves not frozen)
->Unable to recover from rescue cd
After toiling with this issue for some time I found that when the computer is shut down properly, the next login does not show the password prompt. If the computer is shut down via a 5 second power-button press, the password prompt appears the next time the computer is turned on after the "start widows normally" dos screen. I had an older image of the os on a harddrive (replaced HD with solid state) that I used to "restore" from. The issue happened again some 6 days later. I can not keep restoring/backing up all the time as it is very time consuming (there is a lot of changing data on this computer and having to back up like this all the time is not a realistic solution).
I am attempting to setup Homegroup for first time on new computer, I was asked to set a password. The first pw was only 7 letters. It was rejected as requiring 8 letters. Attempted to re-enter new password and program states its the wrong password.When I go to the homegroup page there is no link to see and change password.

It keeps reverting to the old password as the saved password, and I continually have to retype in the new password. I tried resetting the password to nothing, and rebooting, and the old password comes back again.There must be a preference file or an ini file that I can edit. Can I do that without loosing my address book, etc.?

This is due to an overheat problem I have been experiancing since my Win 7 upgrade.I have created a new user account that I would like to run an application really smoothly so have taken some performance tweek advice and turned off the aero peak function, and most of the fancy visual apperance settings, set some services to manual and assumed it would only apply these settings for the current user, but it applies the settings to all users registered on the computer.Is it possible to set up two (or more) different accounts so one could have all the default features and visual apperance settings as standard (for email, Web browsing, media centre, gadgets, all that nice stuff), and onther user account be bare bones, no nice graphics and visuals, less defautl services but run high demand programs better?

I have tried safe mode and launching the Self launching fix which has sort of fixed the problem however it take about 40 minutes to progress from the start page to the desktop. Furthermore the toolbars don't has changed into almost a windows 98 equivalent. I launched norton and it told me my computer was at risk with problems being intrusion Prevention.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Avast AV when Norton expired. In order to activate the internet security stuff, I had to install the upgraded library file, blah, blah, blah. In order to do this, I had to show hidden folders. Having only recently begun my foray into Windows 7 (coming from XP), I was flying a bit blind. I must have hit the wrong thing. After I was able to see hidden folders, install the library file to Avast and continue on with the reboot, the desktop came up wiped clean of my documents/pics, etc and my C:\Users\Susan folder has disappeared and is now called Public. Next, I thought I may have switched my user from Susan to Public, but I have not.

What is even more stupid is I did this by making it "Load Optimal Defaults" so I dont actually know what has been changed.As a result of this windows 7 now cannot start, it brings you to the error fixing part where it searches for errors, cant find any and offers you some more options including system restore. Ive done a system restore but that has also not fixed it. I have little idea how to fix this, windows 7 was working perfectly until I changed the BIOS, but not knowing what was changed means I cant change it back.The BIOS version is: 4core1600twins-p35 p1.40.
