Changed Boot Priority Now Cannot Reset It Back
Jan 22, 2013
I recently ran a memtest86 program to check my ram so I had to change my boot priority to get the program to work. Now it seems I cant change it back. I've changed it and saved it but my cdrom still wants to boot up first. I even reset the bios with no luck.

Right before a fresh install of Windows 7, I go into the BIOS and set the boot priority to boot from the CD first. So at what point during, or after, the installation do I go back into the BIOS and set the boot priority to boot from the Hard Drive?

I recently installed an old game. I'm running Win 7 Pro x64 and the game was for XP. I messed with the compatibility settings and I think something went wrong. The folder icons have changed everywhere but on the desktop. The desktop shows the regular aero styled icons. Everywhere else the folder icons are some dumbed-down picture that looks low tech even for XP. Its bright yellow and has no 3D effects. To make it even more frustrating, it only does this when the view is set to details, list, or small icons, which are the only views I ever use. What button did I push and how can I fix this?

Originally I had a small solid-state hard drive on this set up. I added a non-solid-state hard drive later. Recently, my solid-state drive, the C Dr., became too full to upgrade certain software programs such as Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I purchased a second solid-state hard drive.I "mirrored" that second solid-state hard drive. To make sure that Windows was operating appropriately, I rebooted and hit F10. I then showed the new solid-state hard drive. Everything booted perfectly and the new solid-state hard drive was noted as the C Dr.When I rebooted into bios to change the hard drive boot order so that the new second solid-state hard drive would be the first in the priority, when I highlighted it and exited from it,it still showed the original solid-state hard drive as the first hard drive.I have never had this problem before. I now have to go into F10 every time I boot into my computer and highlight the new solid-state hard drive.

I have a wireless adapter in my desktop that connects by default on start up. I moved my PC somewhere I can run a cable from the router directly. Now my question is how do I make the Ethernet connection the default /start up connection, besides just taking the wireless adapter out of the pc.

HPE-400f Pavilion has been crashing to black screen with cursor with problems booting windows 7. Was getting BIOHD4 error code, then BIOHD3 -- Warning: No Active Partition. Installed 2 spare hard drives to alleviate crowding but problem continues. In troubleshooting have noticed the boot-up priority order keeps changing, so that the HDD group is not first, and also so the main - OS C: - hard drive is not on top of the list. Correcting these problems allows windows to boot up just fine, but then random crashes or bootup failures continue (constantly).Have taken everything out and reconnected, done a clean install from HP disks (reformatting and wiping the HD), system repair, virus scans, etc., yet problem continues. How can I fix the boot-up routines so the computer keeps them as they should be and doesn't keep rearranging them on its own thereby causing Windows to hang up?

I went to Control panel->Default programs->Associate a file type with a program and changed the association to file .BAT to explore.exe.Now, when I click on a bat file with the mouse, the whole desktop starts shaking. I think it goes into a loop. The problem, when I go back to Controlpanel-> Default programs->Associate a file type with a program. The extension .BAT is no longer there! It is gone. And when I examine the file property of some .bat file, there is no option to change what to open it with. There is no open with... only OPEN option. There is also no way to add a new file extension in Control panel->Default programs->Associate a file type. I can't add .bat again.I did Control panel->Default programs->Set progream access and computer defaults but still the .bat file association is broken, and when I double click on it, same thing happens. Now when I right click on a .BAT file from exploer, I also do not see the EDIT option any more.

i needed to pawn my laptop for a short time and didnt want my files to be viewed by anyone while it was not in my possesion, so what i did i changed the file permissions of my c: drive so that only admin had fulll control and no one else. well now i cant access my c: drive with my admin accrt. nor will it let me change the file permissions either. also a hand full of other things will not work such as the internet explorer icon on the task bar or start menu but i can open i.e. from the recently viewd submenu from the i.e. icon on the start menu. also i can open files on my c: drive from any old shortcut icons i had left on my desktop but i cant acces them directly from explorer. so i found some work arounds but really need to get full control of my h/d.

When there is a Restart required after a software upgrade, the BIOS on my system (Win 7/64) will go to an external HDD (I have three for storage and backup). If I force it off and go into the BIOS on startup, it will show any of the other three HDD's in the boot priority. I reset the priority to the correct drive, save and start (repeat this process several times) and finally it will start from the correct HDD. I thought it might be the CMOS battery but with a new battery in place I still ran into this. This system (HP desktop) is less than a year old.

I changed it was because I tried to optimize (my mistake) by reducing it. My router is set to 1365 MTU manually after a support tech from Linksys asked me to change it for a previous problem. I used the "netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Wireless Network connection" mtu=nnnn store=persistent" command to change it around to find what MTU Windows uses automatically. It was set at 1500 (for both LAN and WLAN). I set the WLAN to 1365 to see how it would perform, didn't see a noticable change I believe so I switched back. Now I see a slight lag when loading sites. I also compared the time against another pc that I did not tamper with (which by default was set to 1500) and that one worked normally.I fear I may have overridden Windows defaults for handling MTU since after manually setting it to 1500 (was originally 1500 when it was untouched) it lags a little. For the time being I set it to 1365 to get the performance that I normally got with default settings.
My question is if it's possible to get the original performance back with the MTU set back to what it was originally (1500)?Also I learned my lesson and won't be trying to change settings without first making sure they are completely reversible. Also I'd like to do this without using System Restore.

The only issue is that I want to be able to clear these settings when needed, so that i can fully access the features. I could not find any options in GPO that allows you to reset the settings back to default...

over the last 7 days Ive been experiencing unforced shutdowns of my system.I checked the event log and its related to a critical event: Kernel Power, Event 41, Task category (63).I had a look on the web and their are loads of "fixes", but I havent come accross a thread that led to someone saying the prob was resolved.
1. Possible driver problem - No messing about: reformat SSD and HDD - reinstall Win 7 and basic software (mobo/gpu) -
2. Possible Mobo/GPU/PSU problem - reset mobo back to standard settings - run OCCT test to check CPU/PSU/GPU - No errors -
3. Alter power management plan so pc doesnt sleep/hibernate -
4. Set power plan to high performance
5. Change power management on new gaming keyboard , swap keyboard to make sure (paranoia)
6. Check no duplicate audio drivers.
7. ran Unigine Heaven to give the sys a shakedown.
Its quite frustrating because I cant narrow it down to hardware or software. On the 3/1/2013 it powered down (and restarted) with this error 10 times between 01:25am and 10:52am, however it had stayed stable prior to that and hadnt powered down since 15:16 on the 2/1. So u see it appears random (nothing is random in computing) with the time stamps and no pattern emerging prior to Error 41.

So i returned to my work computer after lunch and the resolution had been changed to 800x600, very odd.Now i have spent 2 hours trying to get back my resolution to the 1680x1050 that is was before but i still can not choose anything higher then 1600x1200 under Screen Resolution settings. The one with the correct ratio i can choose is 1280x960 and i'd like to bigger one back.I have updated the driver for my graphics card (ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics accoridng to Device Manager). I have updated the driver for the Monitor (HP LE2201w), but the monitor still shows up as Generic Non-PnP Monitor under Device Manager and now i am out of ideas... I really have no idea what the hell happened when i was gone.(And yes, the computer was locked so it wasn't someone else changing something)Uninstalling the driver for the Generic device does nothing, it pops back up again after installing the correct display driver, or after a restart. It's like the display driver i downloaded from HP is not being installed, no idea why.

I'm currently running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit. I have two hard drives in this PC. One is an Intel SSD (on which my Windows 7 is installed and is the active partition), and a 1TB hard drive. This computer has been up and running for 1 1/2 years now without any issue.
Yesterday I updated Norton and ran its Registry Cleaner and might have started this problem.
So the problem is when I boot my computer, every thing is normal until before the Windows 7 logo screen. Prior to today, it just goes there without any issue. But today, I received an error: "CD ROM Boot Priority Error - No medium". I have an Asus motherboard, and it has the F8 option to select boot device. So I reboot my computer, hit F8 and select my SSD, and Windows 7 is able to boot correctly and without any issue. Then I check my BIOS to make sure the boot order is correct and it's set to
1-SSD
2-HD
3-CD Rom
But everytime it would display me that error. Yes, I have a workaround by pressing F8 during POST and I'm able to boot to Windows 7. But I'd like to get rid of this error. I ran the Intel diagnostic software on my SSD and the drive is okay and healthy according to it.

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path. The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject. How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

I needed a good backup program so I downloaded a trial of MirrorFolders. I have two identical 750GB drives in my laptop: C (my main drive) and Z (my backup drive). MirrorFolders made an identical copy of C onto Z. That wasn't what I really wanted, because C is partitioned into D and E, and MirrorFolders didn't mirror the other two partitions. The backup methodology wasn't exactly what I was looking for, so I uninstalled the program. After uninstalling MirrorFolders, the machine is now booting to the Z drive, which means I can't format it and try another backup program.
Is there a simple way to restore the boot ability of my C drive? I read a great deal about copying boot folders and such, but I wasn't exactly sure if these were the right answers and I didn't want to screw things up any worse. I figured I could go into the BIOS and disable the Z drive, but no luck. The machine couldn't find a bootable drive, even though C supposedly has the same files as Z.

I was working on setting up a PC for network usage with the understanding that it hadn't been used muchpreviously.Unfortunately I found that it had a PC name already existing on the network and went to change the PC name and IP address as needed for a static IP environmentHowever, after selecting to "restart" the system never rebooted up and I cannot seem to access the CD drive to place a restore CD or basically do anything with the PC.Any ideas on what happened?I've unplugged the computer and waited a few seconds to plug it in.Once replugged it returns to having the basic lights on it blink about once every few second and appears to be otherwise disabled.
