Feb 22, 2011Recently, my Laptop which is running a student offer Windows 7 Home Premium decided to mess up on me by telling me that "Windows detected a hard disk problem" asking me to start the backup procedure and replace the hard drive. The problem began occurring when I started to install my old Sims 2 collection. Whenever I start the laptop and log-on, I receive the message about the hard drive every time. I also get a Blue Screen Of Death when trying to install the rest of my Sims which I'm halfway through installing.I do have slight suspicions that the problem is malware related but I've checked using,Kasperski's tdsskiller application;Malwarebytes' Anti-malware,And AVG Free 2011,None of these applications really indicate that the cause is malware so it's probably safe to say the hard drive really has met its premature end. Especially seeing as its only a year old. However I need to find out if I still have a warranty and that the hard drive is covered under it.It would also be useful to know if there are any good diagnostic tools to check the hard drive with. I've used SeaTools by Seagate and It failed a "short DST" test. The information from other diagnostic tools would also be useful to know to determine the cause of the problem.I have selected a hard drive replacement which has a better storage capacity and I think the same interface type. Samsung HM500JI 500GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache,Samsung HM500JI 500GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII.The next problem is actually swapping the hard drives and putting my copy of windows on the new one. The copy of windows I'm currently running was one bought with a student offer online and the product key was emailed to my old college account which has now been removed from their databases. However, it may be on record with my bank and with Microsoft that I bought it. Is it possible to retrieve the product key and deactivate windows, replace the hard drive, then reinstall windows with that same product key? If possible I intend to swap the product key so I can have a key for 64bit windows if required then possibly put the old hard drive in an external enclosure.

After reinstallation, most software will crash when double click, including media player etc. But If I run these software as administrator, it is OK.And double click IE 9 64-bit is good, no need to run as administrator, but IE 9 32-bit and Chrome will crash if they are not run as administrator.After the software crash, sometimes it will show some error message such as "the instruction at 0xxxxxxxxx referenced memory 0xxxxxxxxxxx. The memory could not be written."It is weird that I can not double click a mp3 to automatically open the media player to play the song, and constantly need to right click the player to run as administrator and drag the mp3 into player, too much trouble.I have done all updates of windows 7. Mar 18, 2011I am using window 7 pro. with MS office 10 and other non Microsoft programs. On Monday while I was updating my iPhone OS using ITunes, ITunes gave me an error message stating that it lost connection with my iPhone. I rebooted the Laptop and too many problems started to pop up since then. For starters, my iPhone was wiped out, where the only way to restore it was by going to the Apple store. Now, ITunes gives me Error 50?! The Apple Store tech avers that ITunes has nothing to do with the problem.
Since then, the majority of my programs are not working those that run require my permission to execute including Windows components such as control panel, security, uninstall, program install, etc. Excel and MS Word are working, but Outlook, Outlook safe mode, OneNote, ITunes, Skype, Adobe, windows troubleshoot, McAfee, Chrome, etc. are not working. They all missing important files or give me an error message. In contrast, I created a new user account without Administrative right. I can run all programs without any problems using this account, except for having to reconfigure everything all over again and having to provide an administrator's permission virtually after every click. I ran chkdsk, desk defragment and McAfee scans from the new user's account and all ran flawlessly and reported that my system is clean with no virus or bad sectors. I have 180 GB of free space. Note: I broke the screen on my lap top, and I used the HD in an exterior HD shell to retrieve some files while I was waiting on my LCD replacement. I had no issues before hand. The ITunes problem started after I reinstalled the HD in the Laptop.

Mar 10, 2012I have recurring "not responding" programs in Win 7. The affected programs are MS Office, Cad programs, Photoshop, etc. I tested my ram and all is good. Processor and temps are all excellent. Hard drive has no bad sectors. All drivers have been updated. Problem usually (but not always) goes away after reboot. Velocity Micro running Win 7 64, 8 GB ram, Intel core i7 870, nvidia gx 275.

Dec 8, 2011I installed Google Chrome, AOE 3 and a number of other programs on the Administrators account. After reading that its not secure and is a best practice to create a second account for daily use I did that. I created the 2nd account with Administrative Rights, then reduced permissions to the first. However, I see that very few programs are available on the desktop of the newly created desktop. I want to share Chrome, AOE3 etc. for all users.Any ideas, am I missing something. I shouldn't have to reinstall all to the 2nd desktop right?
