Re-placing Hard Drive With The Same Copy Of Windows 7?
Feb 22, 2011Recently, my Laptop which is running a student offer Windows 7 Home Premium decided to mess up on me by telling me that "Windows detected a hard disk problem" asking me to start the backup procedure and replace the hard drive. The problem began occurring when I started to install my old Sims 2 collection. Whenever I start the laptop and log-on, I receive the message about the hard drive every time. I also get a Blue Screen Of Death when trying to install the rest of my Sims which I'm halfway through installing.I do have slight suspicions that the problem is malware related but I've checked using,Kasperski's tdsskiller application;Malwarebytes' Anti-malware,And AVG Free 2011,None of these applications really indicate that the cause is malware so it's probably safe to say the hard drive really has met its premature end. Especially seeing as its only a year old. However I need to find out if I still have a warranty and that the hard drive is covered under it.It would also be useful to know if there are any good diagnostic tools to check the hard drive with. I've used SeaTools by Seagate and It failed a "short DST" test. The information from other diagnostic tools would also be useful to know to determine the cause of the problem.I have selected a hard drive replacement which has a better storage capacity and I think the same interface type. Samsung HM500JI 500GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache,Samsung HM500JI 500GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII.The next problem is actually swapping the hard drives and putting my copy of windows on the new one. The copy of windows I'm currently running was one bought with a student offer online and the product key was emailed to my old college account which has now been removed from their databases. However, it may be on record with my bank and with Microsoft that I bought it. Is it possible to retrieve the product key and deactivate windows, replace the hard drive, then reinstall windows with that same product key? If possible I intend to swap the product key so I can have a key for 64bit windows if required then possibly put the old hard drive in an external enclosure.

Dec 5, 2011I have some perfectly good USB flash-card readers from Transcend. They work just great on my XP office machine, and on my home machine if I dig out my XP boot drive and boot XP. But Win7 can't use flash in this device. Disk Management shows the correct size but can't show Properties; no drive letter is assigned, and I can't see the drives. They all work just find under XP.
I hesitate to go buy another brand of reader; USB is supposed to be plug-and-play.
Windows 7 System Repair On USB Flash Card
Feb 8, 2012I have a laptop without CD/DVD burner. Tried to create System Repair Disc from Windows Backup Restore tool but it does not recognize virtual CD drive, networked CD drive, or flash memory as a target to write the Repair disc. I do not have an external USB CD/DVD burner and don't want to buy one just to do this (I can normally read/write CD/DVDs via network to my tower PC). I've researched many sites and have found no clear solution. I've created a bootable USB flash and can bring up the Norton tool, but can't find the files to even copy over to create a repair tool. Would appreciate if someone has actually done this to share how they built a USB flash version of the Repair disc.

May 17, 2012I recently bought an MSI Twin Frozr III 7850 OC and whenever I open any kind of Flash video (x64 BTW) the computer freezes and sound becomes distorted. The only way to regain control of the system is to reboot it. I have no other troubles with it, plays games great, runs quiet, etc. I am running AMD catalyst 10.4, reinstalled driver multiple times, to no effect.

When I tried them in my new Win 7 PC, it assigned a different drive letter and description to each, under Devices with Removable Storage. Even though "Hide empty drives in the computer folder" is checked in my Folder Options, it's not working -- they're still listed under Computer, grayed out. Worse, when I fire up Windows Explorer, it occasionally (but not consistently) gives me a series of errors about the drives not being available -- and this continues to happen even after I uninstall them in Device Manager.
