View 1 Replies View RelatedEvery so often i find that my desktop icons have moved from where i positioned them. The right click menu for auto arrange icons and align to grid are both unticked. My wife uses PC as well but she doesnt move them!I dont understand how Windows 7 might be moving them! i have AVG free, Spyware doctor and WIN 7 firewall all operating and never usually have any probs but theres a worry in the back of my mind that it could be an infection that is causing this as a "joke" virus.?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI set the desktop icon in a logical order, but.Every time I reboot or startup ,one or two of them have moved to a different location.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI play a game called starcraft 2, when playing this game you drag the mouse off the right side of the screen in order to move right. I just setup an extended desktop with one screen to the right of the primary. When playing this game and trying to move right the mouse just moves onto the extended screen. Is there a way to stop this happening so when I am running the game to lock the mouse into it so that it wont move across to the other screen (so I'd have to alt + tab the game to do so).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop that's set up with the background of an office with empty shelves, and I put my icons on the shelves to make it look cool. Due to this, I don't have my icons set to be aligned to any sort of grid, I just move them where I want, making it frustrating to move them back into place. Now, I notice that from time to time some of the icons or folders on my desktop will be out of the place I put them in, and will have moved themselves back to the place they were prior to moving them into the place I want them to be. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I notice it happens with icons and/or folders that have recently been updated or had something new put in them.
View 9 Replies View Relateddoes anyone knows a tweak or third party program that will prohibit the desktop icons from moving? i've tried desklock 1.2 and descklocker, they are good but they also have some personal issues that does not match the exact thing i need. i just want to prohibit the users from moving the desktop icons,
View 6 Replies View RelatedI originally only had a HDD for my computer with Windows 7 on it. I got a 180 GB Intel SSD today and installed Windows 7 on it. When I installed I made sure to unplug the data cable on the HDD. After everything was installed I plugged the HDD in and made sure it booted the SSD in the BIOS.
I went into the HDD to open Steam thinking that it would open fine. It wanted me to update everything so I went ahead and did that. Then I noticed a ton of random icons on my desktop. I realized all of these were from the Steam folder. I have no idea why they're on my desktop. When I try to delete them off my desktop it won't let me, saying Steam is using it. Is there something I have to do to make my SSD and HDD work together?
Also with Steam; after I updated it none of my games were installed. They are all installed on the HDD but when I try to click on a game it wants me to install it again. One more thing, whenever I open a program in the HDD it wants to update and install it into the SSD
How do I get Windows 7 to stop automatically re-arranging my desktop icons?
View 1 Replies View Relatedall my icons on desktop and computer have turned to notepad icons... and they open with some text on notepad... looking for a solution to go back to normal settings...
View 3 Replies View RelatedEarlier today I accidentally turned off my pc at the switch as it was loading a game by resting my foot on it. When I turned it back on it could load to desktop and load the icons, but I couldn't open anything. Infact, the only thing that did run was Hamachi, and that appeared to freeze (although I could exit it with no problems). The computer runs normally on safe mode, and my first instinct after discovering this was to reinstall the video card drivers (fixed a similar problem for me about 2-3 weeks ago where the desktop froze upon loading), but this has not worked, as you could probably gather.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 64. I have various programs 'pinned' to the taskbar, and this works great. However, if I have more than one Internet Explorer 9 window open, they often rearrange at random. The other open program icons stay in the same order, it's just within the IE9 windows that they get rearranged. For example, My Documents icon is the left most, then IE9 window 1, IE9 window 2, IE9 window 3, then a Word document window. If/when I go into one of the IE9 windows it will rearrange the order: I will still have My Documents on the left, but then IE9 window 2, IE9 Window 3, and IE9 window 1, and then the Word document will still be on the right. These IE9 Windows will randomly get rearranged throughout the day. I use these for work and would like to keep them in the same order.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis has been a pet peeve of mine on Win7 ever since I upgraded months ago.
I'm real big on using Windows Explorer to navigate around my drives, looking at files, photos, movies, whatever. There are two things that the folder list, on the left side of the screen, does differently from it's XP predecessor that bug me:
1) It doesn't auto-expand a folder when I click on it. I have to double-click. Years upon years of doing things one way, and they suddenly change it.
2) This is the one I'm posting about... As I'm browsing down the list on the left, burrowing into sub-folder after sub-folder using the arrows.. right as I'm about to click on a folder that I want to view.. Suddenly the list will SNAP back to the top of the page as if it still thinks I want to be looking at whatever other folder I used to be in (usually the default Libraries folder). So I'll sit there and flip my mouse wheel a few times to get back to where I was.. and it'll SNAP BACK TO THE TOP AGAIN. It also happens when I've selected a particular folder, but I'm trying to navigate to one of the many sub-folders. It'll SNAP back up without warning, putting the root folder that I've selected at the very bottom of the screen, forcing me to scroll down. Again. Also happens when I'm trying to use Explorer to open a file from inside of a program.. File>Open, search, scroll, SNAP, scroll, SNAP, scroll, STOP IT, scroll, there it is. Frankly, it's pissing me off.
If there's one thing that bugs me the most about computers these days, it's when they try to do something "helpful" that I honestly don't want it to do. I know better than Windows what I'm trying to do when I'm using this computer. I am not the AOL-using end user that doesn't know what he's doing.. Technical Support? Yeah, been there, done that.. now I train tech support.. believe me, I know what I'm doing.
Is there some option somewhere to tell Windows to leave Explorer the hell alone when I'm browsing my drives? Get it to play the way I want it to play?
i turn off the auto arrange option but the icons sort over to the left side of screen every time i turn off the computer or restart

View 5 Replies View RelatedAll my desktop and start icons have changed to paint icons on my other laptop. When I click on any of them they try to open in paint program.
View 7 Replies View RelatedAt start up the icons are back on the grid and pushed to the left.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSome of the icons normally showing what a program type is are missing now. I HAVE all the DESKTOP icons and those in the system tray. But in Windows Explorer lists or in Word Perfect and Word lists of file names, many of the small icons that normally appear next to a program's name, or showing what type of document or file it is, are now missing. Not all, just some. I have mostly open square boxes. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking at a list of files I've created, or looking at the items in various system folders: most are just empty open squares instead of the individual icons. I have Windows 7 64-bit OS , both Mozilla 17 and IE9 browsers.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a server (HP Proliant ML350 G5) that has a hard disk with Windows 7 Enterprise and Ubuntu (I'll talk about that on UbuntuForums, though). I recently acquired a Dell Dimension 9150. I moved the hard disk from the server to the Dell. Now Windows won't boot. It gets as far as the OS selection. I select Windows 7 from the OS choices. I don't even get the Starting Windows screen. If I try Safe Mode, I get the driver loading screen, but nothing more than that. When I try Startup Repair, it hangs at "Loading Windows Files".I cannot re-install windows because of programs and admin tools found on that hard disk.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop computer. It has a phenom x6 1045t, 4 gigs of ram, an hd 6870, and a 530 watt psu, running windows 7. A month ago, it was running perfectly here in my dorm room. I went on winter break and drove it home with me. It was running perfectly there, too. I have just come back to school from winter break and I cannot get it to start properly. Literally NOTHING has changed with the hardware since about 4 months ago, when I first upgraded my video card to the 6870. It is plugged into the same surge protector in the same outlet it was a month ago, when it was last here. Here's what happens when I try to start it: It goes through the initial ASUS booting screen, then onto the starting windows screen. Then, out of nowhere, my monitor says it's "going to sleep," the lights on my keyboard flash, and it restarts the booting cycle. However, if I tell it to boot into safe mode, it starts without any issues. I need some help identifying the problem here. My first thought was a power issue, but again, it worked fine a few days ago, and it was working fine in these outlets before. I was very gentle in the move, so i doubt the PSU was damaged. The fans are all spinning and the LEDs still come on. Hard drive must be fine, otherwise it wouldn't work in safe mode. Ran a memory test, RAM is fine too.
Additional info: Actually, it successfully started yesterday too, in my dorm room. I used it for about half an hour then let it hibernate, and only now am I having issues. Also, the fan on my video card was going crazy, but after I re-seated it, it calmed down. I rechecked all the wiring as well and everything seems fine.
I'm running Windows 7 Home premium 64 bit Every time I bootup my icons have changed size to medium and are shifted to the left of my screen. The auto arrange in un checked so i'm really stuck
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been looking around for something that can hide my desktop icons (or basically anything except my background & bottom navigation bar) if I'm not viewing the desktop. In other words, when I have a (not full screen) window open, I want to be able to see my desktop background but not the icons on it. When I "view" the desktop, or don't have anything on top of it, I want the icons back.
