I can right click and create a new folder or text file on my desktop, I can move folders onto my desktop, but I can't move files from anywhere else on my hard drive to my desktop. Attempting to move a file to the desktop does not return any error, it just does not move from its location.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI decided to run ccleaner again and make a virus scan. Some viruses were found and a lot of crap was deleted with ccleaner, I also disabled some things in the boot menu with ccleaner (or what is it called?). After that I turned my pc off but first Windows had to do some update. The next time I started my pc the taskbar and desktop were gone, the only thing that is there when it starts is a window with the drives etc.
- ctrl-alt-delete -> run -> explorer.exe -> normally the taskbar should show up but it opens another window with the drives
- replaced the explorer.exe file, nothing changed
- installed another anti-virus program, deleted some malware
- some other things I already forgot
EDIT: Forgot to mention, if I go to the control panel and click on "Taskbar and start menu" nothing happens, it doesn't open any window. Also, if I set a background and reboot the pc again, the background will be gone.
is there a program to toggle the items on a desktop?

However, if I load any pictures from anywhere else they don't crash. I also downloaded a game to my desktop and when I went to open it up I got an error stating the game was incompatible with my OS.when I know it wasn't.

My wife uses PC as well but she doesnt move them!I dont understand how Windows 7 might be moving them! i have AVG free, Spyware doctor and WIN 7 firewall all operating and never usually have any probs but theres a worry in the back of my mind that it could be an infection that is causing this as a "joke" virus.?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop computer. It has a phenom x6 1045t, 4 gigs of ram, an hd 6870, and a 530 watt psu, running windows 7. A month ago, it was running perfectly here in my dorm room. I went on winter break and drove it home with me. It was running perfectly there, too. I have just come back to school from winter break and I cannot get it to start properly. Literally NOTHING has changed with the hardware since about 4 months ago, when I first upgraded my video card to the 6870. It is plugged into the same surge protector in the same outlet it was a month ago, when it was last here. Here's what happens when I try to start it: It goes through the initial ASUS booting screen, then onto the starting windows screen. Then, out of nowhere, my monitor says it's "going to sleep," the lights on my keyboard flash, and it restarts the booting cycle. However, if I tell it to boot into safe mode, it starts without any issues. I need some help identifying the problem here. My first thought was a power issue, but again, it worked fine a few days ago, and it was working fine in these outlets before. I was very gentle in the move, so i doubt the PSU was damaged. The fans are all spinning and the LEDs still come on. Hard drive must be fine, otherwise it wouldn't work in safe mode. Ran a memory test, RAM is fine too.
Additional info: Actually, it successfully started yesterday too, in my dorm room. I used it for about half an hour then let it hibernate, and only now am I having issues. Also, the fan on my video card was going crazy, but after I re-seated it, it calmed down. I rechecked all the wiring as well and everything seems fine.
My Desktop ICONS keep moving around. Not every time I log on, just enough to be a PITA.

Due to this, I don't have my icons set to be aligned to any sort of grid, I just move them where I want, making it frustrating to move them back into place. Now, I notice that from time to time some of the icons or folders on my desktop will be out of the place I put them in, and will have moved themselves back to the place they were prior to moving them into the place I want them to be. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I notice it happens with icons and/or folders that have recently been updated or had something new put in them.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI originally only had a HDD for my computer with Windows 7 on it. I got a 180 GB Intel SSD today and installed Windows 7 on it. When I installed I made sure to unplug the data cable on the HDD. After everything was installed I plugged the HDD in and made sure it booted the SSD in the BIOS.
I went into the HDD to open Steam thinking that it would open fine. It wanted me to update everything so I went ahead and did that. Then I noticed a ton of random icons on my desktop. I realized all of these were from the Steam folder. I have no idea why they're on my desktop. When I try to delete them off my desktop it won't let me, saying Steam is using it. Is there something I have to do to make my SSD and HDD work together?
Also with Steam; after I updated it none of my games were installed. They are all installed on the HDD but when I try to click on a game it wants me to install it again. One more thing, whenever I open a program in the HDD it wants to update and install it into the SSD

I had Dell XPS 8300 Desktop & had bought & Installed Windows-7 ( Ultimate ) on it's 500 GB HDD.I gave that system to my relative except Hard Drive.Now I bought Dell T-7500 Workstation with only DOS installed on it's hard drive to save some money & because I already have Windows-7 ( Ultimate ) DVD.I took out the hard drive with DOS from the workstation & replaced it with the hard drive that I had in XPS with Win-7 already installed.I then tried to boot it in the workstation but it wouldn't boot & gave error messages.So I formatted the OS Partition & fresh installed Windows-7. Now it does load Windows -7 but first it goes thru some other commands as follows when I start the system.

Then it loads Windows-7.All of above happens on its own, I didnt touch anything.So what is going on & what do I have to do get rid off those initializing commands ? I have never had this happen to any previously owned Dell systems.Also I haven't installed any drivers yet but Sound, Video & Internet does work.Do I need to install any drivers & if yes, which ones ?Here is the configuration of Dell workstation T-7500 :

Several times now in the last several days I am getting a BSOD: Driver Power State Failure. Stops codes are

This just started happening a few days ago and I can't seem to determine why? I also cannot seem to run the perfmon report as my system won't stay running long enough to generate it and I can't seem to run the report tool from safe mode.
I am stuck at a black screen with a white arrow you can move with your mouse. right click does nothing. heres what i tried so far just linking to another forum so its easier to see where i am at. really want to avoid having to reinstall windows.

I just setup an extended desktop with one screen to the right of the primary.When playing this game and trying to move right the mouse just moves onto the extended screen. Is there a way to stop this happening so when I am running the game to lock the mouse into it so that it wont move across to the other screen (so I'd have to alt + tab the game to do so).

I recently acquired a Dell Dimension 9150. I moved the hard disk from the server to the Dell. Now Windows won't boot. It gets as far as the OS selection. I select Windows 7 from the OS choices. I don't even get the Starting Windows screen. If I try Safe Mode, I get the driver loading screen, but nothing more than that. When I try Startup Repair, it hangs at "Loading Windows Files".I cannot re-install windows because of programs and admin tools found on that hard disk.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWe are using some Lenovo Q180's as media players for digital signage. For the most part they have all been working fine except for 2. Randomly, the signage presentation will re-size itself and move into the upper left corner. This happens randomly and not at the same times each day. They are hooked up to a LED tv via HDMI. I have tried switching the HDMI cables, ensuring all drivers are current and tried most all the basic troubleshooting. A simple re-start will get everything back looking and running fine. Again, this is a digital signage application so we cannot tell if this has occurred until the client calls to let us know which is not good for us.

As a personal preference, I run with the taskbar positioned on the left side of the screen with autohide set. In all previous versions of Windows, when I set the width of the taskbar (usually about 1 inch, so I can see more than just the icon for each task and the quick launch area is three or four icons wide) it stays that way, whether the taskbar is locked or unlocked. With Windows 7, after I set the width, any time the system restarts, whether from Hibernation, reboot, initial startup, what-ever - the taskbar is back to the narrowest setting.

When i select a photo for the wallpaper it stretches it out even if the photo is a potrait one, which means it cuts off heads of people and so on. I have tried going into control panel> appearance and personalisation> personalisation> desktop background> and tried to change the picture position to fit or centre or anything other then stretch but it wont change anything, the wallpaper stays the same. Anyone have any ideas? i have a feeling it may be a problem with windows or something. My dad is running windows 7 home premium on his home pc and i can change the wallpaper settings on it no problem.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded my PC from Windows XP on an intel Q6600 to WIndows 7 on an AMD 1090t processor. I have my new Hard drive (C) with windows 7 and my old hard drive (D) has Windows XP with all of my files.I would like to image the old drive and store it as a "just in case" measure. The old drive has a 500GB capacity with only about 150GB used. When I image the drive the image file is ~500GB.
1. If I resize the old hard drive using "Windows 7 Disk Management" will I still be able to put that drive in my old computer and have it boot up?
2. Will the image file be only the size of the new partition?
