I am stuck at a black screen with a white arrow you can move with your mouse. right click does nothing. heres what i tried so far just linking to another forum so its easier to see where i am at. really want to avoid having to reinstall windows.

I've tried restarting and making sure my gfx card wasn't loose! I even updated the drivers for it but nothing is working!
View 6 Replies View RelatedBeen having 9 RootKit issues popping up on our Laptop found by the AVG scan for about a month now. I wanted to just do a complete Restore to get things running normally again. Problem is I have a huge amount of pics on there that are not backed up. Been trying to come up with a quick & easy way to do it.Did a Google search the other day & read that I could use a Bridged USB-USB cable & transfer the pics to our PC. Went to Best Buy to get it & they told me that the Belkin Easy Transfer Cable would do it. Well, I attempted to run the thing last night (I don't think it was even doing what I wanted) and now the laptop will not boot at all.There was an error message (that I didn't write down) on it when I got up this morning & now all I get is a black screen with the arrow cursor on it.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from Vista64 to Windows7 64bit final (not a clean install) on an HP M9300T desktop.
Everything worked fine, until the final restart. System will start, I get the colored thingees, I get the Welcome screen, when it should go to my desktop, I get only a black screen with the arrow in the middle. Even if I boot into safe mode, I still only get the black screen...
I've tried reinstalling x4.
I can hit CRTL+ALT+DEL and get to the task manager, and I can run task, programs go on-line etc.
Ran the Nvidia control applet, the monitor is set to native resolution @ 59hz. Don't know if that is causing a problem, I've changed it but it doesn't seem to stay set.
Other than the DVI output I've tried VGA and HDMI outputs to several different screens from the GS 9800 video card, no change.
I even browsed to the Nvidia site and installed their latest Windows 7 64bit WHQL drivers. I've disconnected everything except the keyboard, monitor and mouse, I've pulled every card out of it except the video card, no change?
My computer was attacked by Antivirus 2010. Thank goodness that my son is an IT guy. He removed the program; however, my desktop is now black with white text. There are no icons. When I hit a folder or document, the background is grey. What can I do to restore my desktop to color?
View 3 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I made a clean wipe on my Toshiba laptop, and installed Windows 7 Home Premium x86 as my OS. After installing the OS on my laptop, I proceeded to let windows update check for automatic updates and install them. After installing some updates, I clicked to have my computer reboot. After rebooting it showed the Toshiba screen with the F2, F12 options but after that it goes straight to a black screen with a white underscore. I pressed the power button to turn off then back on my computer and proceeded to press first F2 but it went back to the black screen with a white underscore, then restarted again pressing F12 went to the black screen again, restarted one more time pressing F8 for safe mode but nothing works.

If I try to start it normally, it resets after the starting windows screen. If I try to use the other boot options (safe mode, etc), I get 'Windows is loading files' and then a black screen with a movable white cursor. The repair options all end up at the same black screen with cursor.
If I boot from the Windows 7 disc, after the 'press any key to boot from the DVD' screen, I don't get any options to install Windows, or select a language, I just get either the same starting windows > black screen with cursor, or the same list of repair safe mode options, all of which end up at the black screen with cursor.
If I boot from the Windows 7 recovery disc, after 'press any key to boot from the dvd' I get 'Windows is loading files', and then... the black screen with white cursor.
I turn on my computer to eventually get a black screen with white cursor that will move around. The Toshiba insignia comes up beforehand as well as the windows four square icon then it is to this black screen and white cursor. I cant seem to get the computer to boot up from Windows 7 installation disc. Sometimes I also get a BOOTMGR image is corrupt. The system cannot boot. message as well. I imagine there is a solution of sorts as it seems many people have had a similar problem. I have a freind who maybe able to fix it seeing he is a computer programmer but that is not until the end of the week.

Here are the facts: [code] After the final stage of the setup where you enter PC name, set the password, enter time settings etc, the setup restarts the computer for the 'final' time, final indeed.What happens is that after the Bios / device scan, Windows won't boot and it won't continue past the black screen with the white blinking _ showing in the top left.Could this be because C: has been 'occupied' (or set as master partition) by the 1480GB partition and won't boot from the 105GB partition where Windows was installed?It's so weird because the first two reboots go without problem, no need to F8 and manually select the disk rather than the USB pen or anything.. But on the final reboot, nothing.

So I tried going in by every type of safe mode, But it doesn't work, I just go to a black screen with moving cursor and I can't Open the Task Manager.So I tried system restore, failed with the CD. Then I tried the Grub4dos thing It failed as well. It just brings me to the black screen with white cursor.Also when I start in safe mode, it stucks at classpnp.sys and after awhile It goes to BSOD and reboots. By the way this all started when I installed a game, Dishonored.
View 1 Replies View RelatedToday I started up my pc and after the BIOS screen (the place where you can press f8-f11 for various options) it went to a black screen with a blinking underscore in the upper left corner and stayed there indefinitely. It did this even after reboot.
I tried using the diagnostic tool and everything it tested passed (including HDD). I did this test twice and the same results were produced.
I also googled for similar problems (one topic mentioned that the op disassembling his computer and physically tapping a chip on the motherboard caused it to work) but I have no experience with taking apart my computer and i do not want to break it accidentally. I did however chance upon a topic advising him to do a CMOS reset which apparently helped that op, so i looked through the various options on the BIOS page. There was one option (f10 I think) mentioning CMOS on its fourth sub-window, so i pressed the reset option but I'm mot entirely sure if I used the right function.
I uninstalled kaspersky pure and replaced kaspersky pure for kaspersky anti-virus yesterday, dont know if this was the cause. I am using windows 7 64 bit.
I tried Linux yesterday, and wrote over my previous Windows bootloader files with GRUB.
I later that day (as I could not boot into Windows 7), I deleted the Linux partitions with Windows 7 DVD. Now, after BIOS I just get a white blinking border on a black screen.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron, not always but sometimes on start up it restarts to a black screen with a white cursor. Safe mode does work.I don't know why it sometimes does this or what makes it stop. I have tried just letting it try to load up for as long as an hour with no change, sometimes restarting has fixed it but sometimes (like now, it has done nothing no matter how many times I've tried).

Since then, I've been able to reboot it once, but it flips right back over to the Vaio screen. At one point, I was able to get to the Advanced Boot Options menu by hitting F8. I tried to restore to the last known good configuration. It got to the Windows logo screen, then went back to the Vaio screen, then went to the "Operating System could not be found" screen.The computer has a One Touch Web Access Without Booting Up feature.

I just setup an extended desktop with one screen to the right of the primary.When playing this game and trying to move right the mouse just moves onto the extended screen. Is there a way to stop this happening so when I am running the game to lock the mouse into it so that it wont move across to the other screen (so I'd have to alt + tab the game to do so).

View 3 Replies View RelatedFor the past few weeks I have noticed my laptop becoming slower and slower. As of a few days ago it has been ridiculously slow and is sometimes unresponsive to commands or keyboard. It used to go straight to a black screen with only the cursor after start up but now sometimes starts up, although very slow. Now my desktop started doing it too. I don't know what's going on with them. I had not had any virus protection for a while and recently installed webroot complete 2012 on both of them and scanned, finding nothing. My desktop sometimes loads into safe mode when I tell it to, however it still is extremely slow, SAme with he laptop. And if I try to start up the desktop on normal is stays on black screen. I have noticed that sometimes I will get the "Microsoft windows isn't responding" pop up. My control alt delete doesn't work on either of them either, it pos up suing something like " the control alt delete function could not be started blah blah blah".

Scenario is. Activated Windows 7 N Ultimate as host machine (in other room) Activated Windows 7 Ultimate as client machine, am using it now.
If I remote desktop in after logging in locally on the host, I get the black screen for approx 2 minutes at which point it closes with an error.
If I remote desktop in whilst the host is logged out I can connect and log in fine. If I detach from a running remote desktop session and try to relogin again, I get the black screen sympton again and have to logout locally on the host to be able to login again on remote desktop. If I try to login locally on the host whilst the black screen is up here I get rejected due to remote desktop service been busy. I have to wait for the window to close.
My desktop changed by itself and when I am online the screen goes to black every few minutes even though I am sure I disabled the sreensaver. My antivirus icon also disappeared from the website.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI connect to my work computer through a VPN and remote desktop, and often times remote desktop (I use NLA) works once, but after the first disconnect I can't login remotely. Power settings on the computer are set so it never goes asleep and never turns off the display.
In addition, when this happens, I find the computer has a black screen either before or after login when I go into my office to login directly to the computer.
This problem seems to occur on several computers, including on Win 7 Pro x32 and x64.

View 9 Replies View RelatedBack when it was released, I installed Windows 8 preview on a new partition of my Windows 7 laptop. Ive been switching back and forth no problem, but about a month ago when trying to log in, I typed in my password and was stuck at the black screen with a cursor. After a few restarts and startup repairs it sorted itself out. Now, it's happened again, but this time, startup repair isn't doing the trick. It reports no OS found in the error. I am dual booting between 7 and 8, and in trying to login to 7, typing my password, it again brings me to the black screen with a cursor. I cannot press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reach the task manager and manually start explorer.exe, and same thing happens in safe mode.
I have checked my C drive and saw there were backups of my explorer.exe, so I tried to switch them up with the current one. At one point, I could get to my desktop and see all of my taskbar icons, however hovering over the taskbar would show a loading cursor and I could not open anything. Restarting again brought me back to the black screen. I have tried fixboot, fixmbr, BCD editor, etc, to no avail. I have also tried "last known good configuration", system restore (which reports no restore points...) and checking the registry to verify explorer.exe is the only listing in the Shell file. Also, virus scan MBAM and others: No viruses.
Errors: At one point with the black screen, I let it sit, and a few errors came up after an hour or so... dwm.exe unable to start correctly error 0xc000185, explorer.exe unable to start correctly error 0xc000185, then when pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, "Failure to display security and shut down options". In viewing one of the error details, it reported problem event name InPageCoFire, damaged file name propsys.dll. I replaced that file and a clean one and no change. Right now I am using Windows 8 boot. I can see all of my files are still in the Windows 7 partition.
bought a dell touchscreen inspiron one 2320, thought it would be better than my two year old dell (don't see it yet). i am an average user and i am not impressed. anyway the question is why does the monitor go black after 1 minute? i have done all the normal stuff in power options. change power saving settings, change when the computer sleeps. choose when to turn off display. turn hibernation on or off. i upload to Internet and it the shutting down makes it frustrating....
