Windows 7 Recovery Disk (usb) Won't Start

Dec 4, 2012

I had a external hard drive that was no longer recognized by windows. I have an old(er) desktop without a hard drive sitting around so I plopped the corrupt drive into it (SATA2)

I have a bootable usb drive with the windows installation disk that I want to use to run chkdsk on the drive. When I start the computer I get the usual "windows loading files" with grey status bar then the "starting windows" splash screen. Then the screen goes black and I can hear the mechanical drive spinning in my case.

why I can't get the installation/recovery disk to fully load? I have tried booting without the hard drive connected and I am able to get to the windows 7 recovery console running. Boot order is set to boot from usb first

Startup Recovery Corrupt Registry?

Jan 15, 2013

I have a computer with a corrupt registry to the point where it will not boot. I do not have a good system recovery and the backup registry files in RegBack don't help when I copy them over to system32.

I can't use any of the registry repair tools that I have found because they all require booting into windows to run them and I can't boot windows.I am able to copy the files in RegBack to a flash drive, so I did that.My question is whether there is a tool that I can run on ANOTHER Windows 7 computer that will scan the registry files on the flash drive instead of the files of the computer I am running windows successfully on?

Windows 7 Won't Start, Always Ends Up At Window Recovery Error Screen

Oct 27, 2012

I have a dell desktop computer with windows 7. As soon as you turn it on it goes straight to the "windows error recovery" screen where it has the option to either start system recovery or start windows normally. If I choose system recovery, it just gets stuck on a screen that looks similar to the backround of the loggin screen, but it's just the backround and my mouse. It will stay on this screen for hours until I turn it off. If I start windows normally, it will have the regular "starting windows" screen then it will flash back to the "windows error recovery" screen. If I try booting into safe mode, or loading the last good configuration, it will always bring me back to "windows error recovery". I have the 2 recovery disks I made when the computer was first bought, but when those are inserted, nothing happens and I'm not sure how to open them, it just always ends up at the "windows error recovery" screen. This computer is only about a year old and I have no idea what to do. I just need it to start up again.

Windows 7 Home X64 SP1 Repair Disc - Unable To Start Recovery

Nov 10, 2011

I have successfully created a Windows 7 Repair Disc using the "Create a system repair disc" from Control_Panel->Backup_and_Restore

When I attempt to reboot, using the Repair Disc I have just created, everything appears to work - Loads files, Windows wavy flag, etc. however; just as I am about to get into the real stuff I receive the following message:

This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair.

This is exactly the ssame message I get if I boot from the original Window 7 DVD and elect Repair option

This is really important to me as when I use F8 during Post I do not have the options to repair the system here either and it freaks me a bit to be unable to repair the system should anything happen

Constant BSODs On Startup - System Recovery

May 22, 2011

[Using Windows 7 64-bit]. My computer has been working fine for months and out of nowhere I get a BSOD. I think it may be a one time thing so I just let it restart but I get a BSOD again. This keeps happening for 3-4 times. Afterwards I think a system restore might fix the problem. When I went to the startup repair screen, right when I'm about to click the system restore button I get a BSOD again. I think it may be something on my drive so I burn a recovery disk. When it's searching for my Windows installations, I get a BSOD again. All of the recovery methods I know of get blocked by this annoying BSOD.

Removed Windows 7 Recovery Malware, But Start Menu Items Still Missing?

Jun 2, 2011

so somehow I caught the malware program known as Windows 7 recovery. As per its standard operations it made my computer seem like it was having a bunch of issues, hid all the files on my hard drive, removed my background, etc. I followed a removal guide I found here on bleeping computer and it did rid of me of that annoying malware. A lingering problem I am still experiencing is that all my start menu items are missing. For example there is a folder for Microsoft office, but when you open it it shows as empty, but if I open a Microsoft office file like say a word file the program opens as normal. I have run the unhide.exe file a couple of times, and shutdown my firewall and maleware protection, but to no avail the start menu items still seem to remain hidden.

Windows 7 Will Not Start, Goes Straight To Startup Repair?

Aug 4, 2011

I changed explorer.dll in Windows 7. Then explorer wouldn't start when I tried to do so from task manager. So I tried to reboot. After also being unable to make headway in safe mode (using msconfig), as that also requires explorer, I launched startup repair using my windows 7 CD. Then after it said that it would reboot and fix any additional problems, it has kept rebooting and failing. I can't get to safe mode using f8 either, it just comes up with boot options 'Boot from CD' and 'Boot from HDD'.f I can get out of startup repair, that would be tremendous. At least then I can activate word from task manager and save my coursework!'m going to try using Ubuntu's explorer to change the files back. I'll post back any progress! I'll be checking this wall at least 5 times a day until a solution is found.

Startup Repair Loop--after Recovery To Factory Defaults?

Oct 13, 2011

EDIT: This is added by moderator. The problem system has been "restored" to factory defaults, so you can skip to post # 11 and be missing only some history. I have also at this time moved the thread from Networking to Windows 7.Okay, this is my boyfriend's laptop. He's left it with me to see if I can fix it. I'm at work right now, and it is at home, so I can't try anything until I get home tonight. Here'e the situation, as best I can tell:He has 2 laptops...one is old, and connects fine, the other is probably 6 months old - a Dell - Windows 7, and this is the one that is having problems. The other laptop has no problem with its connection - it is just the Dell laptop. He brought it over to my house last night, and it is doing the same thing. It finds and connects to my network, but it states that it is a "limited access" connection, which essentially means you have no internet connection (apparently).

So here is what I have found out. For one, his laptop came with few months subscription to McAfee...and apparently that is now expired. He's never renewed it. I did put MalwareBytes on there for him, when he got the thing, but I don't think he runs it unless he thinks there is a problem. I've told him to keep it updated, but I guess he thinks I can fix it if there is a problem. Again... (Once we get this fixed, he WILL keep this stuff current..darn it.) Anyway...he said he kept getting some popups - the ones that ask if you want to "allow a program to make a change to your computer"...and he always said no. I think he got several of those in one night. He ran the MalwareBytes, and it found and quarantined some malware (I don't know what sort of things - I was not there when he ran it) and then when he tried to access his network again, he got the "limited access" thing. So...something has happened, just on that laptop. I messed around with it a little last night, but I couldn't get anything working.

[64-bit] Missing BOOTMGR On The 2nd Screen On Startup, F11 Or ESC Can't Open Recovery

Jun 15, 2012

I want to switch my graphic (I have dual graphic one is intel and one is ATI mobility Radeon), I click okay to switch to power saving graphic intel, and so the screen blacks out. It never respond after black out, I made hard restart and screen freeze at the win 7 icon. No luck, give me a choice of to do a HP recovery or system recovery, some how I must have accidentally click on HP recovery and preceded to click through all the warnings, til it was at 1% then I realized that it was going to delete all my DATA!Well, I was still very sleepy when I decided to terminate that recovery...by power shut down.So power up: "BOOTMGR is Missing Press Crtl-Alt-Del to restart"I went through F11 system recovery to try and see if I can still recover, but no luck, later i tried some steps in cmd window:

bootrec/fixmbr
bootrec/fixboot
bootrec/rebuildbcd
bootrec/scanos
got error says I have zero OS installed!

Bcdboot c:windows also give me failure when attempting to copy boot files I restarted, try and try again, but now it won't even let me into system recovery says "BOOTMGR is missing" now I can't even access my command to try some recovery without totally deleting my files.... I tried burning a win7 ultimate iso to a DVD and try boot from there but it says no OS system found. My computer is HP touchsmart with switchable graphic, HP has a recovery partition that can restore my computer but I don't know how to access it now. Can't get pass the screen of BOOTMGR is missing...I learn my lesson don't touch computer til im fully sober. I may have done the DVD bootable wrong. And now I NEED EXPERT HELP! MY NOVICE SKILL HAS TAKEN ME NO WHERE, PLEASE EXPERTS REPLY WITH INSTRUCTIONS..........

My original system is win 7 home premium 64x, but all I have at my disposal is a copy of win 7 ultimate 64x.Some specs of my computer: HP touchsmart with switchable graphic, intel i5 and ATI mobility Only has one OS: Windows 7 Home premium 64x Has HP recovery partition, and 300GB of other space.have this InsydeH20 Setup Utility Rev. 3.5 and currently all I can do is do some random scans.. Primary hard disk self test, and then memory test, I don't expect to see any problems since I have this done with in the HP system recovery environment.

Stuck On Startup Recovery Loop / Can Backup My Files

Mar 1, 2012

I have a pc that is setup with a 60 gb SSD for Windows and a 2TB RAID 0 for the rest of the stuff. Last night I decided to partition some of the RAID to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview and see what the fuss was about.I partitioned it just fine, and everything was going smoothly, until I decided to use the windows tool to make my pendrive bootable with the Win8 ISO.In the middle of the process, I was doing something else (unistalling firefox to be more exact) and suddenly a blue screen comes up!Now my PC is stuck on the famous startup recovery loop, and I cant find a way to make it boot.

- Manual CHKDSK
- That tutorial on this forum where you mess around with the prompt wnidow
- restarting 1 billion times
- booting up from the windows DVD and trying to repair the hard drive

And as you can imagine nothing happened and I am still stuck with my har drive being unbootable. Now I cant help thinking that this was due to my pen drive being in the middle of that process in some way, but I have since removed it, burned it and buried in a forest, and still my problem persists.Since I havent found another solution online, I think now that the only way for me to get my PC back running is by reformatting my SSD (while hopefully keeping all my RAID files intact) and reinstalling windows. BBUUUTT!!! I have 100s of hours worth of Skyrim in that drive, and if I loose that I will seriously freak out! While I dont play it a lot anymore, when the expansions come, Dovahkin will rise again! Can I copy my files from my messed up SSD to somewhere else, before formatting it and starting a new life?

Windows 7 Recovery Virus - Unable To Restore Start Menu Programs List

Jun 10, 2011

A client of mine (I'm an IT summer temp in a production facility) recently contracted the Windows 7 Recovery virus and contacted me to fix it. Having encountered the XP version recently and resolved the issue, I was able to easily remove the virus and associated rootkit. The difference this time was that unhide.exe failed to restore the start>all programs menu shortcuts, although it did manage to restore the folder structure. I read through and followed the instructions of another thread here: [URL]. Which did not resolve the issue. The output given by SystemLook is as follows:

Windows 7 Won't Start Up, Startup Repair Faliure On Every Boot Up?

Nov 27, 2010

with my custom built desktop. My custom built has been acting up like mad only a month after creation. It worked perfectly at first, but then I suddenly found that half of my services were disabled randomly. As well, my computer kept connecting with limited access to my household wireless connection, quite simply meaning I couldn't connect to the internet.Eventually, after throwing all the solutions I could find on the net at it (sfc/scannow, system restore, enabling the systems manually through and elevated control panel and even upgrade installs (with the original OEM system builders disc), I gave up and did a complete reinstall, wiping everything on my hard drive and starting again.Unlike the upgrade install I attempted, this actually worked and my computer worked perfectly...until I updated windows. After downloading the 53 updates windows update thought I needed, when I booted up my computer the next time, the internet stopped working again, with half of my services stopped (including Diagnostics Repair). Now every time I boot up my computer, I come to a Startup Repair screen that fails every time. Here is the message I get: Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automaticallyProblem signature:Problem Event Name:StartupRepairOfflineProblem Signature 01:6.1.7600.16385Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385Problem Signature 03: unknownProblem Signature 04: 21200686Problem Signature 05: AutoFailoverProblem Signature 06: 3

While Running Startup Repair After Windows 7 Starter Won't Start

Feb 5, 2012

I left my computer - which is an Acer Aspire One, that I purchased, refurbished, a few months ago from a local dealer and came preloaded with Windows Starter 7 - closed, but without turning it off, for a few hours while I ran out to a cafe with a friend (which I've done hundreds of times before. But, when I came back, it was frozen on the firefox tab I had open when I left. So, I figured, I'll just turn it off with the power button and turn it back on. When I did this, Windows stalled out while opening and wasn't going anywhere, and then the screen went black and it went back to the Acer splash screen and told me that Windows had failed to start and suggested I run Startup Repair. So I did, and, after about 5 minutes, it went to a blue screen with a white hummingbird and some curly bits behind it, and a slightly distorted cursor that moves on the screen when I use my keypad and hasn't moved since. That was about 20 minutes ago. I'm really stressing out, because I don't know what to do, and there are files on there that I need for work.

Windows won't start. I get a a black screen saying some hardware or software has changed and the only options are to press enter to continue, or escape to exit. I tried booting my Win 7 64 bit recovery disc (aka system repair disc) but in the second screen where it tells you to select an operating system, it is blank! I attempted to add hard disk drivers but i couldn't figure out how. So i pressed next and got to the screen with various options. I selected "Startup Repair" but that won't work. It says that "startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically".

Laptop Running Startup Repair In A Loop, No Recovery Disc?

Jun 29, 2012

I am having a nightmare with my Dell Latitude E4300 laptop. At the moment it runs a continuous loop of start up repair and will not allow me to even attempt to get into Windows 7 until this has been done. When it runs the test it stops, giving the error message no OS files found on disk. Everytime I restart this process just continues. It is a work laptop, so I do not have and windows recovery disks. To make matters even worse, before the startup repair loop the laptop wouldnt even let me into the Windows system, even in safe mode. After attempting to get into safe mode it would stop at the driver classpnp.sys. Further tests would also show up the error message 2000 0146.I am not technical at all, so am hoping this is going to make sense to someone who can explain it in very simple lanuage.Just to reconfirm, I do not have any windows recovery disks - and cannot access safe mode at all.
