Windows 7 Will Not Start...startup Repair Does Nothing
Sep 3, 2012
I have a Toshiba Satellite that started freezing up after some windows updates. It would run fine in safe mode but now it gets stuck on the windows startup screen. If I choose startup repair it just keeps searching. I had tried to restore when in safe mode but the computer old me it. Could not find restore point. I have been trying to backup files that I needed before doing a factory restore but now I am lost...

I changed explorer.dll in Windows 7. Then explorer wouldn't start when I tried to do so from task manager. So I tried to reboot. After also being unable to make headway in safe mode (using msconfig), as that also requires explorer, I launched startup repair using my windows 7 CD. Then after it said that it would reboot and fix any additional problems, it has kept rebooting and failing. I can't get to safe mode using f8 either, it just comes up with boot options 'Boot from CD' and 'Boot from HDD'.f I can get out of startup repair, that would be tremendous. At least then I can activate word from task manager and save my coursework!'m going to try using Ubuntu's explorer to change the files back. I'll post back any progress! I'll be checking this wall at least 5 times a day until a solution is found.

with my custom built desktop. My custom built has been acting up like mad only a month after creation. It worked perfectly at first, but then I suddenly found that half of my services were disabled randomly. As well, my computer kept connecting with limited access to my household wireless connection, quite simply meaning I couldn't connect to the internet.Eventually, after throwing all the solutions I could find on the net at it (sfc/scannow, system restore, enabling the systems manually through and elevated control panel and even upgrade installs (with the original OEM system builders disc), I gave up and did a complete reinstall, wiping everything on my hard drive and starting again.Unlike the upgrade install I attempted, this actually worked and my computer worked perfectly...until I updated windows. After downloading the 53 updates windows update thought I needed, when I booted up my computer the next time, the internet stopped working again, with half of my services stopped (including Diagnostics Repair). Now every time I boot up my computer, I come to a Startup Repair screen that fails every time. Here is the message I get: Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automaticallyProblem signature:Problem Event Name:StartupRepairOfflineProblem Signature 01:6.1.7600.16385Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385Problem Signature 03: unknownProblem Signature 04: 21200686Problem Signature 05: AutoFailoverProblem Signature 06: 3

I left my computer - which is an Acer Aspire One, that I purchased, refurbished, a few months ago from a local dealer and came preloaded with Windows Starter 7 - closed, but without turning it off, for a few hours while I ran out to a cafe with a friend (which I've done hundreds of times before. But, when I came back, it was frozen on the firefox tab I had open when I left. So, I figured, I'll just turn it off with the power button and turn it back on. When I did this, Windows stalled out while opening and wasn't going anywhere, and then the screen went black and it went back to the Acer splash screen and told me that Windows had failed to start and suggested I run Startup Repair. So I did, and, after about 5 minutes, it went to a blue screen with a white hummingbird and some curly bits behind it, and a slightly distorted cursor that moves on the screen when I use my keypad and hasn't moved since. That was about 20 minutes ago. I'm really stressing out, because I don't know what to do, and there are files on there that I need for work.

Windows won't start. I get a a black screen saying some hardware or software has changed and the only options are to press enter to continue, or escape to exit. I tried booting my Win 7 64 bit recovery disc (aka system repair disc) but in the second screen where it tells you to select an operating system, it is blank! I attempted to add hard disk drivers but i couldn't figure out how. So i pressed next and got to the screen with various options. I selected "Startup Repair" but that won't work. It says that "startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically".

If I shut down my machine it can only start after a startup repair. However, if I hibernate it starts normally. What this means therefore is that I am no longer able to install new updates successfully especially those that require a shut down for a complete successful installation. What should I do?

I am pretty sure that a virus cause this, right before my computer shut down on it's own my anti virus popped up and said that a Trojan was found but I didn't have to do anything. Then the computer shut down and when it restartrd started to load files and then go into startup repair, only it couldn't fix it. I tried a restore, but again it said that the startup files wern't there. I just quickly scanned the diagnostic details and noticed something that said "boot critical file C:CI.dll is corrupt".

Ever since I bought my new computer and installed Windows 7 64 bit Pro I have noticed that sometimes when I start my computer the startup locks up or crashes, requiring me to restart or it takes me to the system repair screen and running this process does nothing.

I have a Dell Inspiron and a while ago I shut down my PC and the next morning I was faced with options to repair my computer. It hung on the screen for ages before it actually came up with startup repair and supposedly fixed the problem. A few days later, everything got very slow and started to freeze a lot and before long, booting the computer got very slow as well as it hung for about ten minutes on a black screen after the 'welcome' screen before finally starting up. I decided to reinstall the operating system (I did NOT reformat the C drive), so I borrowed my Grandma's external hard drive and copied my files. After reinstalling using a Dell Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium Re-Installation DVD, I copied and deleted the files off the external hard drive onto my PC (I didn't know it would create a Windows.old folder) and started installing programs. Then I left it overnight to install quite a big program. This morning, somehow it had turned off. I turned it on and it gave me the safe mode options and a 'start windows normally' option. I chose the latter and after typing my password it hung on the welcome screen again. I left it for ages and it just went back to the user login screen again. I pressed the red button in the corner to shut it down but it just hung once again on an empty screen so I did a hard shutdown (held down the power button). I turned it on again...startup repair. It gave me the option for system restore, which I did (then realising when it finished that I hadn't made a backup). I booted it, and again it wouldn't start properly. At this time, safe mode booted fine. After trying various things (even using a compressed air can to get rid of dust) and a few hard shutdowns, suddenly every option from the advanced boot menu took me to startup repair except 'Repair your Computer' which gave the normal options for repair (although now it only gives me 2, Startup Repair and DataSafe Restore and Emergency Backup. Now when I do startup repair, some times it says it has fixed the problem, and sometimes it says it cannot be fixed automatically and gives me information on the problem (a few things it said were: 'StartupRepairOffline', 'AutoFailover' and 'CorruptRegistry').
I can't reinstall my computer because then I would lose my precious files.
Is there some way I can save my files and reinstall or even just save my files somehow or am I screwed?

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655-S5132 that just shut down & now will not boot Windows 7. Just goes to black screen w/blinking cursor then goes to 'startup repair' (which I'm postiive this is a virus of somekind) & will not allow me to do anything. Just repeats itself. I downloaded Windows 7 repair to a CD-R, chgd BIOS settings to CD/DVD to boot first, saved changes, and will NOT pull/boot up from disc. I've tried 2diff repair discs, both do not work. 'F8' does not do anything for me, not able to get to 'safe mode'. Computer is only 2yrs old.

I hate it when this happens and so far, the startup repair has always been able to fix the problem. Today, I'm not so lucky.
I'm using my other built right now coz I have to work. I don't remember what updates I did last night but I do remember the dvd drive firmware was updated.I popped in the system restore disc, start it up and the same page appears: Start with windows start up or Start windows normally. Tried both and neither one of them would bring up system restore. This built was only a month old and was hardly used so far so no system restore point was created at this point. I have files in it that I would like to keep but I can't get to them right now so a clean fresh install is needed but I can't get it up.

Last night I was on my computer and then I shut it down. Today when I came home from work it keeps saying windows failed to start. I tried hitting f8 and loading to the last good configuration doesn't work, safe mode same thing, repairing nothing, so my last resort was my windows 7 cd. So I went into bios and made my configuration boot from cd/dvd popped it in and restarted, a black screen came up saying windows is loading files, then the windows 7 menu came up, picked my language, next, and first I tried repair my computer, I get the little circle meaning its loading for like 5 seconds them it does nothing, rebooted again but this time I chose, install and I've been on the setup is starting for like 20 min. And forgot to mention, when it boots seem like it does good then comes to the screen where it says windows failed and gives me two options repair our start normal, if I pick repair it just reboots and start normal takes me to like the pick your user screen but its just blank no users, so I can't even restore our access the computer.

I know its not a faulty hard drive because its newly fitted and this problem occured previously on a different hard drive aswell.

Whilst looking for a keygen for Microsoft Office 2010, I must have got a bad file.. yay. When I clicked on the app, my computer immediately went to the Startup Repair window and has been relentless. I've tried opening in SafeMode thru F8 for a system restore, no good. And attempted to start windows normally through F12.
Finally, the Startup mode is over and I'm attempting to turn it back on ... and we're right back into Startup Repair.

the Startup screen. So I went to the Startup repair tool as was recommended, but after few tries nothing has changed. So I tried to recover to previous recovery point, but also nothing. Then I tried booting to Safe mode, and I saw that during the loading process there was no file shown as succesfully loaded. I might also know what could be the cause of this problem, because yesterday when I was shutting Win down, there was a blackout so obviusly some files are corrupted.

Usually I can resolve most issues myself but this one appears to have stumped me so I am graciously turning to you in my time of need.I am unable to boot Windows 7 on my Acer Ferrari One F0200 netbook. It has Windows 7 home premium 64-bit installed but due to an unknown problem or possibly persistent virus I have been unable to boot into windows.
below is a list of things i've tried up til now:
Tried to boot in all safe mode options (failed)
Tried to boot from last known good configuration(failed)
Tried to system restore from all available restore points (failed)
Tried multiple Startup Repairs(all failed)
"Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically"
Problem signature:
Problem event name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem signature 01 : 6.1.7600.16385
Problem signature 02 : 6.1.7600.16385
Problem signature 03 : unknown

while writing this I managed to get a blue screen message(disabled the option to automatically restart on system failure) which had been flashing for a nano second previously.A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. it says to check for viruses on your computer remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run chkdsk /f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.I had already ran the chkdsk /f before I saw this message and no files were corrupted/no bad sectors. So this is where I'm at, at my wits end hoping that I dont lose all my data.

I've been having trouble trying to get my computer to boot; I'd noticed a drop in performance (still unsure why) so decided to boot up in safe mode and poke around - it was not my original intention to install AC 5.3.0 but somehow it happened. I ran the 'deep-care' utility and everything was working fine, my computer rebooted and performed a disk check: there weren't any errors that I can remember apart from [something along the lines of] 60 reparse files. Following this my computer restarted and Windows failed to load, restarting to show me startup repair - this isn't the first time this has happened, a similar thing occurred following previous attempts at boosting speed, though before I was able to get Windows up and running using an Ubuntu installation disk... still don't understand why - no need to say that it didn't work this time. Startup repair refuses to work and my system restore points have vanished; I would try doing a repair install if I had a copy of the disk. I built the computer myself a few months back, borrowing a Windows 7 installation disk from a friend (who has now conveniently lost said disk), startup repair does tell me something about 'Problem Signatures'. I am having a problem with windows 7, when i start the computer it says loading files and then goes directly to startup repair. I cant even get into the computer in safe mode or anything else by pressing f8 when istartup. It just keeps on this startup repair loop. Its states startup repair checking for problems, it attempts repairs but then it says it cant repair this computer automatically. I have tried system restore, sytem image recovery and tried to restore the computer to its factory state. when i try that i get a error 0x4001001300001002. I didnt get any recovery disks when i bought the computer either.

I have a Sony Viao with Win 7 Home Premium and I just deleted some form of Trojan with MS Security Essentials and then I ran windows updates before I restarted the machine. Windows update installed some security updates along with Service pack 1 and IE9. Now the computer will not load Windows. It goes straight to the startup repair but cannot fix the problem. There is not restore points other that when SP1 was installed and I gives an error every time I try to restore it. I can get to a command prompt and I have tried to run sfc /scannow but it tells me there is a system repair pending which requires a reboot and then does nothing. I also tried check disk(just as a last chance) but that didn't do anything.

As of yesterday whenever I start the computer, it says "Windows Error Recovery - Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. If windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, startup repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose start windows normally."it then gives me two choices: Launch Startup Repair (Recommended) or Start Windows Normally. When I launch startup repair im left with a black screen with no cursor. Ive tried just leaving it alone but after 5hours it stayed the same so I just gave up and just turned it off. When I start windows normally it tries to load up windows but after a few seconds Im brought back to the first screen with the same two choices.I have also tried running safe mode and last known good configuration. Both of them lead me back to the first screen with the two choices.
