Windows (7 Ultimate X64) Boots Into A Blank Screen With A Cursor
Feb 11, 2012
I was all good working on my computer when I decided to restart my computer because "rocketdock" (a dock program) didn't open a folder and gave me the "open with" dialog instead.
Background:- I've installed a lot of updates recently, including SP1. The windows is customized i.e. some files are edited. I used tune up registry cleaner, which caused a problem in Chrome, so I used a command found on the Internet, it made tons of errors (which was mentioned by the one who suggested the command) and the computer CPU was fully loaded, the command was replacing files, or something like that. When I remember the command I'll post.
PS: "Ctrl+Alt+Delete", "Ctrl+Shift+Esc", and "Ctrl+L" don't do anything. PS2: Safe Mode loads into the same screen.
Basically I woke up this morning to my computer sitting at a black screen with the cursor visible I'm able to move the cursor but do nothing else I rebooted my computer my manually shutting it off and then it started up as it would normally but did this disc check:[URL]from there it moves back to the black screen with the cursor I again restarted and booted in safe mode this time I was then able to reach windows and tried to do a system restore to an earlier point When i did this i was greeted with this error [URL]Finally here is my harddrive just in case [URL]I exported my full system info so please let me know if more info is necessary

I turned on my computer tonight and before booting it started scrolling text saying deleting corrupted files and scanning files etc...this went on for at least 10-15 minutes and then when it was done it said "Starting Windows" like normal, then brought me to a black screen that said "Preparing to configure windows...do not turn off your computer". That message disappeared after a few seconds and left me with a black screen with a mouse cursor. In the bottom right hand corner of the screen is a power button, bottom left is ease of access button and bottom center it says Windows 7 Home Premium.
I can't do anything with this. I've restarted numerous times, and I've tried restarting in Safe Mode and it still brings me to this point every time. I've also tried using system restore and startup repair through the advanced settings from pressing F8 during boot up.
PS. I did not upgrade my version of windows or anything...Windows did install some updates last time I turned off the computer I think.
Windows boots and starts up, but at some point I get a black screen from which I cannot exit unless I reboot. Since my video card has 512MB, and my board's maximum memory is 4GB, I suspected Windows would not have the full 4GB to play with, and, sure enough, the Windows properties screen shows I have 3584 MB available. Also, the POST screen seems to test 3670016 KB, which I believe is the same thing. In fact, even the memory test programs report only 3584 MB memory. I have been running Win 7 x64 for several months on my Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 motherboard using 2GB memory (4x512MB). I decided to upgrade to 4GB (4x1GB), the max the board can handle.
Installed and tested using Memtest-86, Memtest86+, and Memscope with several passes of each -- all good. On the other hand, one of the advanced tests for Win Mem Diagnostic failed, but since it was making lots of artifacts on the screen, I suspected it was confusing video memory with RAM. So I thought Windows knows about my memory and vid card and is reserving things apprpriately, but maybe not. I boot and go into Win 7, and enter my password, but some time later the screen goes dark as if it has gone to sleep, except it will not wake up.
Most of the time just before it goes dark, I see several colors on the screen, which make me think it has something to do with the video, and I wonder if the computer is getting confused about which memory it can use for what purpose. I looked in the BIOS for something obvious, but I didn't find anything, except (maybe?) the setting for "Init Display First" which was set to "PCI slot," and which I changed to "AGP," but I don't think that worked. I looked for but did not find something about memory mapping, so maybe that is on already.
Basically I woke up this morning to my computer sitting at a black screen with the cursor visible. I'm able to move the cursor but do nothing else. I rebooted my computer my manually shutting it off and then it started up as it would normally but did this disc check: [URL] from there it moves back to the black screen with the cursor. I again restarted and booted in safe mode this time. I was then able to reach windows and tried to do a system restore to an earlier point. When I did this i was greeted with this error [URL]. Finally here is my harddrive just in case [URL]. I exported my full system info:

After leaving my comp on overnight i wake up to non-responding programs, i shut down manually and then as i restart this happens. 5minute lag on welcome screen and then it turns blue with a moveable cursor. i have used system restore and created a new user but neither works. i can run perfectly on safe mode.
my computer boots up to a black screen with a mouse. The problem is, when I boot from anything or into any option I get this. Safe Mode gets me black screen, so does booting from a Win 7 Recovery disk, everything puts me in a black screen with cursor. At first it will show Windows logo on the screen, with loading bar, then cuts out, and cursor pops up. That's it.Also, when I try to boot normally, it hangs at Windows logo, then flashes a quick blue screen then reboots.
After I turn on my laptop Dell starts and it says her resuming windows and then goes to a blank screen with my cursor. I removed the battery and held the power button but don't know what else to do. I don't have a restore disk. I'm running windows 7.
two day ago i turned on my pc as usual. But it did not boot, instead i got a black screen with blinking cursor, so is there any way to make my pc recover from this issue.
I've tried the f8 , it has No effect I even re installed the os but it does not work.. It does all installation work asks for my name and pc name . Then it does the video and perfomance testing . Then it restarts and i again get the blank screen with blinking cursor.
I thought I would start to describe this issue by telling you what I screwed up on and how I made it happen: I accidentally set my backup drive as my primary (set the partition as active in CMD, it has no installation on it). Then when I went to boot my device, it would tell me that Windows was not installed. I put my C: (main, primary) partition as my default again (with CMD on installation disk) and I was able to get Windows to boot. Then I messed with the MBR to try to fix it and now this happens:
Current problem: When I boot Windows, it give me the old Vista-looking boot scroller (Not "starting windows" with the traditional animation). This animation only lasts for about 3 seconds, then it goes to a black screen with the cursor. That is all. Nothing loads, yet no error message. I tried using a few bootrec commands to fix it using the installation CD's CMD but no luck.
I am using w7 ultimate with a GT 9600 Nvidia GPU, connected to a samsung 22" wide screen via a HDMI cable, when I boot up the OS loads the startup screen in the old Vista format instead of the new W7 screen. It appears that my issue is the initial low resolution output via the HDMI cable. I have tried a DVI cable onto anther screen and the issue is not present as the new 3 ball bootup screen appears. Is there any way that I can tell the OS and or the GPU to start up immediately in a higher resolution which will enable the W7 newer boot screen.
have Windows 7 Home edition on a HP dv4 series laptop. Couple of days back I was browsing through a website suddenly the the windows was shutdown. I assumed it was some virus workWhen I try to restart windows it is taking me upto the HP boot options then I get a blank screen with a cursor at the top left corner. The following did not work,1) Booting via the recovery disk2) Booting via recovery hard disk3) I created a USB boot with Ubuntu and even the USB is not getting detected
Everything shows up fine until the welcome screen after that it normally used to fade to the desktop but now it goes blank. The screen in Black with only the mouse pointer. Its not hung, i can move the mouse pointer. Then after a minute or so it advances to the desktop. Everything on the desktop loads up in less than 5s. The PC runs fine, it is really fast as there are only a few programs, but only boots slow. My total boot time is about 3-5 min. I think it should be like in a minute or so.I have not tweaked much with the system but have installed a few programs like MS office, Nero, Acrobat and Photoshop. These are the only heavy programs in the PC right now. The only games on the PC are AC1 and AC2. I have uninstalled my graphic driver and reinstalled. I already minimized the programs in the msconfig>startup to the minimum. I have run ccleaner, spybot s&d, Antimalware and i also have a trial copy of Kaspersky AV (upgrading later to 1-year license). there are no peripherals attached during boot except the USB keyboard and mouse. A printer is attached too but is most of the time turned off.
Just today I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. This was a problem I had a few months ago with Vista on this same laptop, and I was hoping it would be fixed with Windows 7, but apparently it hasn't.
I just finished the installation and final reboot and everything, and I logged in, only to have the Welcome spinning circle on the screen for about 30-45 seconds, and then a blank screen with a moving cursor, but nothing else. After using Ctrl-Alt-Del to log out, I logged back in, and this time after 25-30 seconds of the Welcome spinning circle it logged me in.
Like I said, this was an occasional problem I had with Vista as well, but if possible, now that I'm using Windows 7 I'd like for it to not be a problem at all.
I'm running a 5 month old HP G60 laptop. During the upgrade process today I had to update my BIOS and everything else, so I think those should be fine. I just thought this would be the best place to ask if others have had the same problems and if so, what they did to fix it.
my son has a toashiba satellite pro L450D-12x it goes past set up screen then to a blank screen (in black ) with a flashing line in the left corner how can i get it to load properley? before it did this it said media cable fail or something like that and i restored bios back to restore settings and it was also turning itsself off now and again.
I recently dualbooted Linux Mint and Windows 7 on my laptop. Yesterday I removed the Linux partition without thinking, and forgetting about the GRUB bootloader. I'm at a stump now. When I try and turn on my computer, the Toshiba logo appears, then the screen goes blank with a blinking cursor. I searched the internet all of today and most of yesterday, all that did was tell me to do the bootsect /nt670 /fixmbr and all it's variations[CODE]
I have a HP netbook running Windows 7 Starter edition that I only had for about 2 months anyways this morning I started it up and got the HP logo screen briefly and then a black screen with a white cursor in the top left hand corner. I can get to the BIOS menu and I have tried restoring to default but that didn't do anything. I then unplugged ac adapter and battery and help power button down for a min. and then put battery and ac adapter back in and started it.
i read a lot about this problem "Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Black screen with Cursor hang".i dide clean install Windows 7 ultimate 64x " and the same for 32 " and i still have the same probable , after complete instal and do restart or shutdown there is no booting ! after motherboard logo , there a black screen with cursor. [code] today i try win 7 professional 64 bit and its work fine and i try win 7 professional 32 bit , the same !! only ultimate hang in booting and alt+ctrl+delete not work at all , also F8 didn't work i mean i cant reach menu for save mood or last good ... etc.
Formatted Windows 7 loads shows Win 7 Logo and Screen blank with cursor
I have an Acer laptop 4551, got hit by nasty viruses and on top no restore intact. I formatted the hard drive which gave me an error 83% and stopped. Today I turned on laptop to install fresh genuine Windows 7, I popped in the DVD and done everything in BIOS selected Boot from CD. Everything was Ok I hit enter to Continue then comes the Windows 7 logo and after that a blank black screen with Cursor, that's it! I done that some 5/6 times but no luck.
My old HDD was fried so I decided to use my External HDD to boot off. Afterreformatting the drive I have installed it into my laptop and have attempted to install Windows 7 64bit and its all going great until after the starting windows screen and then it just turns black with the cursor. What I have tried so far....- I have reset the BIOS to defalt-Cleared the CMOS- Checked the RAM (even left 1 2gig stick in and tried that?)
I'm having a reoccurring issue with Windows 7 that always presents itself some weeks after I install it. I've run into this issue of installing windows updates only to have a blank screen with only the cursor present after I login from boot many times and have always had to reinstall. I'm wondering why this issue keeps happening, and what I can do to fix it.Ive tried sfc /scannow /offbootdir ..... several times but it either says it will do it on the next restart (which it doesnt) or it just says it can't run it.
On booting up today, there was no mouse cursor in the centre of the screen. I discovered that if I operate the mouse quickly, the cursor would appear from the top right corner of the screen but as soon as I stop the mouse, the cursor moves quickly back to the top right corner and disappears. I do not have the time to click on anything. Is there anything simple that I can do without calling in a computer technician? oldherper has chosen the best answer to his/her question.Click here to view the answer that was selected.
I've been using my laptop for a while now and had a friend install Windows 7 onto it (because i'm quite rubbish with this sort of thing) and everything has been going great until a few weeks ago.
I loaded it up one day and everything is going fine until it reaches the part where it's supposed to load the log on screen. Instead of a log on screen all i am getting is a black screen with the cursor. Now i can't give you specs to my computer or anything of the like because i simply don't have access to it but i can give as much aid as possible to help find the problem.
One of the things that happens is that when the black screen & cursor appears if i move the mouse or push any buttons the screen goes VERY dim as if i've put it into a lower power mode or i've taken out the power cable. If i push the power button to turn it off even if it's just a tap on the button the screen will go off immediatly even if the laptop is still running.
One of the green lights that i believe is showing if the hard drive is busy or not flashes during the process but after a minute or so of the black screen it'll stop flashing altogether.
I've tried all three safe modes with all the same results, F8 to system repair has given me no love with startup repair finding NOTHING wrong, memory check running through the process only for the same thing to happen and system restore has no restore points to go to.
I've looked for answers in several places and some say i have to use sticky keys to get the screen to come on but the problem is that as of last nights use i turned sticky keys off for a few minutes so i could play a game and forgot to turn them back on afterwards. I've taken a look around the net and can't find a fix to my problem. Reinstall simply is not an option under my current circumstances so i really need a favourable reply.
So yesterday I turned off my PC. Nothing was wrong, everything was fine as it always was, nothing unusual, no random slowdowns, errors, etc. The next day I went to turn on my PC and that when it happened... the infamous Black Screen of Death. Just a black background with my cursor. I don't have the original disc with Windows because my friend upgraded my Windows XP to Windows 7.
- Task manager doesn't work. (ctrl + alt + del, and all the other ones that have to do with opening a window) - Safe mode doesn't work, none of them. - Tried PervX fix, didn't work. (Though I did it through Windows XP by booting to earlier version of Windows, so it probably wouldn't effect Windows 7 anyways.) - Tried Malwarebytes on both of my HDD's, one containing Windows XP, the other containing Windows 7. - Tried ALL options through the Repair Windows boot using F8. - Tried most options I could think of in command prompt through the Repair Windows boot. - Tried ALL other boot options in F8. - Tried a lot of other stuff I can't remember, but I'm more than happy to hear replies with possible fixes, even if I tried them but didn't list.
rite i've managed to make a pig's ear of my boot. my windows still boots ine.....butmy boot menu is blank in msconfig boot tabis blankeasyBCD cant see any boot info and asks me for it, it wont write any boot info.bcdedit constantly says the store import operation has failethe device is not ready"in repair also when i try to do anything i.e. importbootrec.exe in repair also doesnt recover it.what im trying to do is have a boot menu, where i have the option for win 7 then a pen drive with a linux disto on it then also CDrom as i normally chop and change between all them 3 onthis pc and im sick of going in the bios 4 times a day to change these options.
When I try to do a clean install of Windows 7 I get the loading files white progress bar you normally get during an installation, it then goes directly to the scrolling progress bar that would normally appear before a Windows startup, and then goes to a blank Windows 7 desktop with only a cursor (that I can move).I have a computer with the following specs:[CODE]I have tried to install with every version I can get my hands on, both 32 and 64 bit. None of them are upgrade versions. I've tried installing on a fresh WD Raptor and an Intel G25 SSD. All other drives have been disconnected. I've moved my memory around and tried with one stick. My mainboard has the latest official BIOS, although there is a new beta.
I ran the Windows 7 compatibility test and didn't see anything that would cause this problem.I have searched the internet and have not been able to find a solution sonstalling Windows XP has never been a problem, just Windows 7, always with the same problem. This is one of the few times when I have not been able to look around a find an existing answer to a problem and I am stumped.
I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit onto my blank harddrive via usb that was setup with the microsoft application for doing so.
It adds new windows files to about 80% then give me this error: Code: Windows cannot install required files. The file does not exist. Make sure all the files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code: 0x80070002 Phenom x4 9850 6GB ram nvidia 9800gt seagate 7200rpm 750gig baracuda 460W PSU m2n78-la viola
I just purchased a new motherboard, processor, RAM, and power supply for my Desktop. I have been trying to boot the computer using my hard drive from my old setup which had Windows 7 on it. Whenever the computer boots it goes from the bios screen to the Windows Boot page with the logo but then it goes straight to a Blue Screen. When the Blue Screen comes up it only flashes for a tenth of a second and then restarts so I can not read it. The same thing happens when I try to boot the computer in safe mode.
I recently formatted my main drive (upgrading from Vista to Win. 7), and it worked perfectly. It asked to install some updates, including my graphics card and everything else. Then it restarted, and updated a few registry settings ( I think somewhere around 5600-56000, alot more than a few lol), and it black screened when it came to the login screen. I tried logging in, and I could hear the sounds and everything else, so I think it's the graphics card that's the problem.I tried booting into safe mode and uninstalling/reinstalling the graphics driver, but it still black screened.I checked almost every other topic about this, and I tried everything but it didn't work, but i'm still open to more common suggestions.
Right now, i'm just running on the on-board graphics in normal boot mode.System Specs:OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bitProcessor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 7Processor Count: 4RAM: 6078 MbGraphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, 1024 MbHard Drives: C: Total - 280139 MB, Free - 253850 MB; D: Total - 420255 MB, Free - 420153 MB;Motherboard: Acer, EG45MAntivirus: None, I will be adding Kaspersky later.
