Unable To Install Windows 7 - Computer Sees The Disk As Being Blank
Oct 23, 2011
I have an odd problem with my Windows 7 installation. The computer I'm trying to install it on is running Windows XP, and any time I try to boot from the disk (I have it set to be first in the boot sequence), it seems to just skip over the disk altogether and run boot from the hard drive (into Windows XP). I looked into this further, and it turns out that the computer sees the disk as being blank (0 bytes out of 0 total bytes).
When I put it into other computers, it is read fine, and I have even used this disk to install multiple copies of Windows 7 on other computers. The computer that isn't working can read any other disk fine, and has never had DVD-drive related problems. I've even tried copying the files from the Windows 7 disk onto another DVD, as well as a portable USB drive, but those didn't seem to work either (it gave me some error about the disk not being bootable).

I have a W7 upgrade disk which I purchase when W7 was release and my l copy of Windows XP SP2. Is there any way I can just install W7 on a newly formatted harddrive.
Reason:
I have a trojan virus they cannot be deleted, it can only be quaranteen. Unfortunately while quaranteened, it still creates temp files...more than a 100. After trying numerous outlets: Symantec, my product is Syamantec Endpoint Protection., Mcafee on-line, Trend Micro House Call and Web Root Secure anywhere, I am afraid I will have to reformat the drive andi install from scratch.

trying to install Windows 7 on sony laptop with a copy that is different from the original copy of Windows 7.did partdisk, clean all, create partition, and dvd install gave the "can't install to disk, turn on disk controller in BIOS" error. there is no disk controller function in my BIOS.if partdisk clean all was successful, does that mean the HDD and its controller board are ok, that is, not physically damaged, and the problem is with software/installation/setup etc.?what should i do next, in order to have a successful install?

Originally got message - Disk read error occurred press ctl alt del to restart. Then tried plugging this drive using a USB connector into my desktop PC to see if I could run some chkdsk. Then my desktop PC displayed messages telling me my firewall and virus software had been turned off and the computer crashed. ROOTKIT? So I was left with 2 drives not working. I re installed windows on desktop but using ISO on flash drive BUT can't on the 500GB Hitachi HTS545050B9SA00 for some reason. Windows setup loaded and Deleted old partitions and formatted. When I tried to install, it froze. It now just boots up with a windows loading screen and I'm also unable to boot from flash drive as it freezes. This is on a Sony Vaio VPCEB4E4E.

My mom's computer started having issues booting a day ago, it seemed like something was draining all of her cpu's power. I verified that was not the case, and ran the computer in safe-mode. I downloaded Ccleaner and cleaned her registry with it (Yes, I verified that the registry values it removed/modified were safe, most of the having to do with programs I know were removed from the computer.) After a re-booting it appears the BCD has gone corruptit would be an easy fix, but her computer, (Bought at the store in a IVY Tech college.) did not come with a windows install disk, so repairing the BCD has proven difficult. Is there any other way I can do it? (I did ensure she made some recovery disk's when she bought it, but as far as I call tell, all they can do is fully restore windows.)

Just finished installing Win 7 64 bit on my Dell Inspiron 1545. It appeared the update was going along smoothly until it came time to reboot. After rebooting, the laptop showed that it was configuring Windows. Once the configuration was completed the system went into Startup Repair. Once completed and checking the Repair Details it shows a message indicating that ci.dll is corrupt. I was able to restore the computer to original state, but once I downloaded the 80 or so win 7 updates, I get the same problem.

Why a CD disk already of around 40 MB some Word files is wrongly seen as a blnak disk to be formated and burnt? It was not so before. Almost the day before yesterday I had no such a problem, and it worked normally, letting me to see and open the files on it. Today, inserting it into the DVD drive, the Autoplay dialogue window instead of offering "Open folder to see files" just offers choosing a way to burn it! I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

I have recently built a new computer, everything had been working perfectly however the ammount of RAM windows displays has dropped from 32 GB to 24 GB, also during POST it displays 24 GB, whereas it had previously been showing the correct 32 GB. When I run CPU-Z and look at the memory tab it shows 32 GB, so I think Windows could be allocating part of the RAM to something without me knowing.

My dad and I are working together trying to fix these problems on his HP Pavilion P6277c Win7 machine. We finally decided that a complete wipe and reinstallation of the OS is the only way to go. It was so fargone that we had to use Knoppix just to back up files to an external drive. (I don't know how it got this way; I can only guess a bad driver installation because it seems like it was after a printer driver was installed that this started.)But there are three recovery disks, and the first one is blank. He made the three disks when he got the computer, I'm guessing using HP's automated program, and when we tried to start the reinstallation, the first disk is just nothing. We put it in another computer and it said "Blank medium."
(I'm going to use this opportunity to vent, because it's infuriating to me that HP refuses to provide a normal reinstallation disk, and instead uses these "Recovery" disks that don't work and include the same bloatware that comes with it. Ok, now I'm back to being civil.)We have the Windows 7 install disk for my computer because it's custom-built and I bought the license separately, but it's the OEM copy from Newegg and we really don't know if the license stuff is going to let us install on another computer. And that won't include the drivers. It's a possible solution that we're going to try, but it's not optimal in my opinion

Replaced HP laptop 250GB SATA HDD (Vista) yesterday with new 320GB SATA HDD Win7.Reason for replacing was having to run CHKDSK and Startup Repair a couple of times recently, thinking the old HDD could be wearing out.Win7 sees old HDD connected externally via USB but cannot access. It wants to format the external HDD, but the whole reason for accessing it is to recover data.USB ports are working.Status bar in Windows Explorer says Bitlocker status:off External HDD cable is Y configuration and have tried it with just one and both plugged in.(H > Properties > Tools > Check now > Tried to run CHKDSK on the external HDD but it says "Disk check could not be performed because Windows can't access the disk." Under the Hardware tab it shows the two WD HDD and each says "Device is working properly."Under Change Settings, Quik removal policy (default) is enabled.Under Drivers > Update driver > it has the latest driver.Win7 AutorunKiller said external HDD is safe.Avast and Comodo are running but no security message has appeared. Might it need an exclusion anyway for Comodo? There is no security tab under (H > Properties so not sure if UAC or permissions is involved. BTW, the light on the external HDD blinks rapidly while opening Properties but it takes a long time to display. So, there is where I am at the moment and if you have time to consider a path of resolution for this anomaly.Additional info: I have just connected an old ATA HDD via USB and migrated some data with no problem. Also, I have just connected an older laptop HDD via USB and migrated some data. I swapped the cable from the older laptop to the new recently replaced Vista HDD and it gave the same message wanting to format the 250 GB Vista HDD.

I put Windows 7 (build 7000) onto a plain-vanilla Dell Dimension 4600. It seems to have found the NIC (evidently an Intel Pro/100 VE) just fine: [URL] .. but I'm not picking up an address from my equally-vanilla Linksys router. With the cable unplugged the network window looks like this:[URL]... and as soon as I plug in a cable it starts doing stuff:[URL]... further confirming my belief that the NIC is working and Windows 7 can see it just fine. But then it doesn't pick up an address. [URL]'ipconfig' in a CMD window confirms that it's using a self-assigned (169.x.y.z) address. This machine was online 2 hours ago with XP, so the NIC, cable, and router are all fine.

I'm currently in the process of buying a new laptop and one of the ways that I can save money on it is by getting it without an OS installed onto it.. I'm able to get windows 7 off of MSDN for free because my university has some sort of partnership with them or something, but obviously this is just a download and not a disc.
Therefore I was wondering if it is possible (and how is it possible) to install an OS onto an internal blank HDD without having a disc (i haven't downloaded it yet but i'm guessing you download it as a zip or maybe .iso and they send you a key as this is how it worked for other software I've got off of them)

I managed to fix the cd/dvd drive at first and now it reads cd/dvd with something stored in it. However my problem comes when I try to burn something on blank disk. My computer( dell dimension e521) wont read the blank disk at all.
* I tried the Upper and Lower filter and cleaned the disk lens and saw that all SATA cable are good.

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on my PC again, and came to a blank screen after the reboot. I have the PC hooked up to a TV using the S-Video output on my graphics card, and suspect that win 7 is using the DVI port instead. There is no way at the moment that I can use the DVI port because I don't have a monitor that supports it.
is there a way around this so I can use the S-video output for the rest of the installation?

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a new SSD, my old hard drive crashed. My video card is an onboard ATI Radeon HD 4250. Initial setup works fine, but when the computer reboots it comes back up blank. I'm already running two monitors, one VGA and one DVI, and safe mode doesn't work either, I've tried booting from a flash drive and a dvd with exactly the same results.

I just installed a fresh copy of windows 7, the setup process even took me far enough to create the account, time, homegroup settings ect. It seemed successful. Then it restarts one final time and results in a blank screen after the bios screen flashes. I've tried every setting in the BIOS with no avail. Pressing CTRL ALT DEL at the blank screen just restarts the computer, flashes the bios as usual, and then when you should see the windows loading sign it loads a blank screen with no mouse cursor at all.
I've already tried formatting twice and it results in the same exact issue. The computer was working fine before hand, didn't add any hardware or anything.

I run Win 7 64 bit with Virtual XP. I loaded HP 5400C software into Virtual XP. I attached Scanner and was able to scan/print and scan/pdf. ie everything worked as it should. A week later Virtual XP requested I run 7 updates. Since 7 updates the Virtual XP sees the scanner. When I request "attach" it goes ding dong. When I check again the wording does not change to "release" I think the problem lies with the recent updating. The scanner software reports the scanner can't be found.
