I have recently built a new computer, everything had been working perfectly however the ammount of RAM windows displays has dropped from 32 GB to 24 GB, also during POST it displays 24 GB, whereas it had previously been showing the correct 32 GB. When I run CPU-Z and look at the memory tab it shows 32 GB, so I think Windows could be allocating part of the RAM to something without me knowing.

I have installed 8gb of memory and bios reports only 4gb, windows sees 8gb with 4gb usable. I have tried all the usual fixes, updated bios, swapped sticks(reseated) install 1 stick at a time to no avail.I can not seem to find any memory remapping switches in bios setup, but something is locking out 2nd 4gb.
View 30 Replies View RelatedReplaced HP laptop 250GB SATA HDD (Vista) yesterday with new 320GB SATA HDD Win7.Reason for replacing was having to run CHKDSK and Startup Repair a couple of times recently, thinking the old HDD could be wearing out.Win7 sees old HDD connected externally via USB but cannot access. It wants to format the external HDD, but the whole reason for accessing it is to recover data.USB ports are working.Status bar in Windows Explorer says Bitlocker status:off External HDD cable is Y configuration and have tried it with just one and both plugged in.(H > Properties > Tools > Check now > Tried to run CHKDSK on the external HDD but it says "Disk check could not be performed because Windows can't access the disk." Under the Hardware tab it shows the two WD HDD and each says "Device is working properly."Under Change Settings, Quik removal policy (default) is enabled.Under Drivers > Update driver > it has the latest driver.Win7 AutorunKiller said external HDD is safe.Avast and Comodo are running but no security message has appeared. Might it need an exclusion anyway for Comodo?There is no security tab under (H > Properties so not sure if UAC or permissions is involved. BTW, the light on the external HDD blinks rapidly while opening Properties but it takes a long time to display.So, there is where I am at the moment and if you have time to consider a path of resolution for this anomaly.Additional info: I have just connected an old ATA HDD via USB and migrated some data with no problem. Also, I have just connected an older laptop HDD via USB and migrated some data. I swapped the cable from the older laptop to the new recently replaced Vista HDD and it gave the same message wanting to format the 250 GB Vista HDD.

It seems to have found the NIC (evidently an Intel Pro/100 VE) just fine: [URL] .. but I'm not picking up an address from my equally-vanilla Linksys router. With the cable unplugged the network window looks like this:[URL]... and as soon as I plug in a cable it starts doing stuff:[URL]... further confirming my belief that the NIC is working and Windows 7 can see it just fine. But then it doesn't pick up an address. [URL]'ipconfig' in a CMD window confirms that it's using a self-assigned (169.x.y.z) address. This machine was online 2 hours ago with XP, so the NIC, cable, and router are all fine.

The computer I'm trying to install it on is running Windows XP, and any time I try to boot from the disk (I have it set to be first in the boot sequence), it seems to just skip over the disk altogether and run boot from the hard drive (into Windows XP). I looked into this further, and it turns out that the computer sees the disk as being blank (0 bytes out of 0 total bytes).
When I put it into other computers, it is read fine, and I have even used this disk to install multiple copies of Windows 7 on other computers. The computer that isn't working can read any other disk fine, and has never had DVD-drive related problems. I've even tried copying the files from the Windows 7 disk onto another DVD, as well as a portable USB drive, but those didn't seem to work either (it gave me some error about the disk not being bootable).
I run Win 7 64 bit with Virtual XP. I loaded HP 5400C software into Virtual XP. I attached Scanner and was able to scan/print and scan/pdf. ie everything worked as it should. A week later Virtual XP requested I run 7 updates. Since 7 updates the Virtual XP sees the scanner. When I request "attach" it goes ding dong. When I check again the wording does not change to "release" I think the problem lies with the recent updating. The scanner software reports the scanner can't be found.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI used to be able to access the internet on this computer - on a small business server 2003 - on the Network Sharing center, it shows that I am connected to the network (doesn't matter if I'm on wireless or wired same issue) it shows an x on the display for internet. I checked the gateway and it is the same for the other computers that are on the internet. No problems anywhere else connecting to internet. I don't have any spyware/viruses. I can access files on the server and other pcs no problem - just won't let me on the internet. I read somewhere that it could possibly be SP1?

I have a Razor mouse ( the Lachesis) which has the ability to store profiles -of polling rates and DPI- and switch these profiles as it sees the desired program. I use two profiles. One is for the "Steam.exe" for my on-line gaming. When I launch Steam, the mouse sees the exe, and switches to this max polling/DPI profile. The other profile is the "Normal" profile which is set at a much slower, less twitchy speed. On XP, I was able to find the Windows "Explorer.exe" in CWindowsSystem32. I set this as my switching exe.and it caused the mouse to switch to the "Normal" profile when it saw the desktop. I can't find the "Explorer.exe" in System32 in Windows 7. Is there no such thing in Windows 7 (Enterprise) or is there another exe. I can use for the same purpose of switching, on seeing the desktop?

PC1 - no problem - I find and install the printer using the "add a printer" option under "devices and printers" that I have used without issue in the past.
PC2 - PROBLEM - when using "add a printer" the correct printer is identified but will not install. The computer seems to hang when searching for the IP address.
--- Attempt 1: manually enter the IP address for the printer. DOES NOT WORK PC hangs at install.
--- Attempt 2: downloaded Brother utility which correctly identifies the printer and its IP address but "add a printer" (through wizard or manually) still will not work.
NOTE: Printer is set to "share this printer"
I have an external western digital HD which is 2x 500gb sata drives that mount to 1tb, I assume there bridged to make the 1 TB possible my question is that ive decided to put these in my pc case(couldnt do it before) as media drives etc, I put both in, but my pc only sees the one 500gb drive is there anything I can do for me to see both.
EDIT also ive just noticved I can actualy see the non working drive in BIOS.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEvery now and then my WiFi stops working, and if I go to dev mgr, the General tab tells me that "No drivers are installed for this device" for device status. On the other tabs, however, I have all the details on the installed driver, and if I ask Windows to update the driver, it tells me that the best driver is already installed. The problem is solved by rebooting, but I find that annoying. I'd like to figure out WHY it does that. I've saved earlier versions of that particular driver from over the last three years, and the problem occurs with all of the drivers. This is a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit system. The driver is an Intel driver; the one installed at this moment (it just happened again, and I have not rebooted, since I had a powerline enet outlet handy), and the version of the Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN is 14.3.1. I have other versions of that driver saved, from 13.2.1.5 to 15.1.1_Ds64. I had reverted to the 14.3.1 because the more recent versions seemed to be worse about the driver disabling itself or whatever it is doing.Coincidentally with this, the event viewer shows that mmc.exe was terminated because it was hanging. I had just run sfc yesterday, and there are no corrupt files that Windows cannot fix, and there weren't even any corrupt files that it DID fix.

I just built me a new computer. I installed Win7 Ultimate. Everything is running pretty good. I went to look at the stats for my system and noticed the RAM. Windows sees the 8 gig that is in stalled but Im unsure why its only using 3 gigs.
Recently i bought windows 7 to install instead the xp im using now, the problem is after partitioning and installing, the moment when windows wants to start for the 1st time, it gets stuck in the black screen after loading windows remains and the only thing that can be seen is mouse cursor, no matter how long i wait, the user creation and windows 7 configuration never shows up!P.S: My pc specs are:HDD: near 160 GB...i gave 30 Gb 1st time, and saw the problem then gave 45Gb, and the problem remained..CPU: intel pentium 4, 3,20GHz 3,21GHzRAM: 1GB...I've noticed that 64-bit needed 2GB of rams, therefore i tried to install Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bitGraphics card: NVIDIA Geforce 7600 GS - 512 MB of ramptical Driver : Ofcourse. It is DvD Drive.

I think it told me the old files would be saved as something ".old" but I cannot find it anywhere and now i am running low on HD space and have nothing installed yet!

I installed Windows 7 on a brand new SSD and I go into windows explorer and its telling me 48.4 GB free of 111 GB, otherwise known as: Windows 7 and only Windows 7 is taking up 62.6 GB!

An ex coworker of mine installed Windows 7 Pro on a pc for one of our clients, which was never activated. Now it's 30 days later and it's asking for the key. The sticker with the Windows 7 Pro OEM key on the side of the box is rather illegible. I input the key in an attempt to activate, but it fails. My issue is I don't know if I'm putting in the wrong key or the Windows 7 Pro that was installed is not OEM version. Is there an easy way for me to tell if it is OEM or not without having to reinstall?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI would like to install windows 7 on my desktop. It is currently running windows XP. I'm not sure what i did but i wound up installing Windows XP "twice" on the C drive. I booted up windows 7 and installed it sucessfully but the windows XP is still on the drive.

FI have a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit computer with 6 GB of DDR2 and an Intel Core Quad processor. My problem started when the beta for Office 2010 came out. My computer came pre-installed with Office 2007 so I wanted to try the new and it wouldn't install. I didn't really care too much because I don't use Word or anything too much. But when I tried to reinstall Office 2007 I got the same error. Error 1935. Over a period of three days I spent with Microsoft Tech to just lead me to call Gateway about the problem. I figured it was a Microsoft Office thing, but recently, I tried to install Microsoft C++ and something else that another program relied on. Another error. And just today, I tried to update my Anti-Virus and I got this, "Installation of the Microsoft Runtime Redistributable Kit has failed.The probable cause is a Windows update running in parallel." So I updated my computer, with 2 unnecessary updates, and restarted. Same error.
So I made a repair disk and ran it, still the same problem. I've looked all over the web fornothing credible has worked. I have already deleted and un installed everything off my computer that isn't necessary for it to work. I just want to type up my essay with the comfort of not having to try to format things in WordPad.
How to get IE8 back on Windows 7 after IE9 was installed.
- Go to start > control panel > program and features > From the left menu select > Turn Windows Features on or off Deselect IE9
- When asked to reboot > reboot
- Go to start > all programs > windows update > on the bottom left in that screen you see Installed updates, click it Now search for the Internet explorer 9 and possibly the language pack
If you have the language pack installed deinstall this First (no need to reboot, continue your work) and then deinstall Internet Explorer 9, reboot. Now you have your Internet Explorer 8 back. Possibly updates will need to be installed.
