I format a write-once disc (UDF format) but it write something to it (about 137 MB) so when i try to create a system repair disc it says 'disk is not blank- erase disc', but as it is a DVD+R i cannnot erase anything on it.What does Windows write to the Disk?
View 1 RepliesI have a toshiba satellite L750 running Windows 7 home premium, when trying to burn anything onto a blank disc I get as far as selecting my items and asking it to burn but it keeps telling me to insert a blank disc (which obviously I have). I have tried several different types of blank disc but it dosnt seem to recognise any of them.

All of them work fine on my husbands desktop, which I believe may be Vista (I cannot remember ), but not on my new laptop. I just bought an HP Pavilion with Windows 7. When I put the discs in, my autoplay options are for a blank disc. I decided to go into My Computer and go into them from there and it is saying there are "702 MB of 702 MB" remaining. View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm currently in the process of buying a new laptop and one of the ways that I can save money on it is by getting it without an OS installed onto it.. I'm able to get windows 7 off of MSDN for free because my university has some sort of partnership with them or something, but obviously this is just a download and not a disc.
Therefore I was wondering if it is possible (and how is it possible) to install an OS onto an internal blank HDD without having a disc (i haven't downloaded it yet but i'm guessing you download it as a zip or maybe .iso and they send you a key as this is how it worked for other software I've got off of them)
I have Dell computer with HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H73N SCSI CdRom Device...never had a problem with it now all of a sudden it wont recognize a blank disc...it will play a dvd movie with no problem...I uninstalled and then reinstalled the drivers which did nothing...also uninstalled the drive completely which didnt help either

My cd/dvd writer just seemed to stop working. I can burn photos or music onto a disc but when I try to look at it it just says disc is blank.

Almost the day before yesterday I had no such a problem, and it worked normally, letting me to see and open the files on it. Today, inserting it into the DVD drive, the Autoplay dialogue window instead of offering "Open folder to see files" just offers choosing a way to burn it! I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy dad and I are working together trying to fix these problems on his HP Pavilion P6277c Win7 machine. We finally decided that a complete wipe and reinstallation of the OS is the only way to go. It was so fargone that we had to use Knoppix just to back up files to an external drive. (I don't know how it got this way; I can only guess a bad driver installation because it seems like it was after a printer driver was installed that this started.)But there are three recovery disks, and the first one is blank. He made the three disks when he got the computer, I'm guessing using HP's automated program, and when we tried to start the reinstallation, the first disk is just nothing. We put it in another computer and it said "Blank medium."
(I'm going to use this opportunity to vent, because it's infuriating to me that HP refuses to provide a normal reinstallation disk, and instead uses these "Recovery" disks that don't work and include the same bloatware that comes with it. Ok, now I'm back to being civil.)We have the Windows 7 install disk for my computer because it's custom-built and I bought the license separately, but it's the OEM copy from Newegg and we really don't know if the license stuff is going to let us install on another computer. And that won't include the drivers. It's a possible solution that we're going to try, but it's not optimal in my opinion
I have a W7 upgrade disk which I purchase when W7 was release and my l copy of Windows XP SP2. Is there any way I can just install W7 on a newly formatted harddrive.

I have a trojan virus they cannot be deleted, it can only be quaranteen. Unfortunately while quaranteened, it still creates temp files...more than a 100. After trying numerous outlets: Symantec, my product is Syamantec Endpoint Protection., Mcafee on-line, Trend Micro House Call and Web Root Secure anywhere, I am afraid I will have to reformat the drive andi install from scratch.
I have an odd problem with my Windows 7 installation. The computer I'm trying to install it on is running Windows XP, and any time I try to boot from the disk (I have it set to be first in the boot sequence), it seems to just skip over the disk altogether and run boot from the hard drive (into Windows XP). I looked into this further, and it turns out that the computer sees the disk as being blank (0 bytes out of 0 total bytes).
When I put it into other computers, it is read fine, and I have even used this disk to install multiple copies of Windows 7 on other computers. The computer that isn't working can read any other disk fine, and has never had DVD-drive related problems. I've even tried copying the files from the Windows 7 disk onto another DVD, as well as a portable USB drive, but those didn't seem to work either (it gave me some error about the disk not being bootable).
I managed to fix the cd/dvd drive at first and now it reads cd/dvd with something stored in it. However my problem comes when I try to burn something on blank disk. My computer( dell dimension e521) wont read the blank disk at all.
* I tried the Upper and Lower filter and cleaned the disk lens and saw that all SATA cable are good.
My toshiba satellite wont start. goes straight to blank screen with flashing mouse no cursor. on blank screen no error messages wont start from recovery disk

But I decided I needed Windows still, so I dual-booted Windows 7 Pro and Ubuntu, since I get a Win7 Pro key for free from my university. I'm trying to sell the netbook now, and I want to erase my data but keep the OS (I don't need to keep Ubuntu on it, just Windows). I would just erase the whole disk and re-install the OS, but I don't have the product key anymore, and product-key retrievals I've tried haven't been able to give it to me for some reason.

After erasing with this program I go to "computer" and right click on DVD. Then I right click on properties. Most of the time it shows as not having erased the dvd. By shutting down the computer and restarting I then get the correct figures.

I have tried to reinstall and repair the HDD but the disc fails to recognize my HDD (Western Digital Scorpio Black 500 GB). My HDD is Basic, has 3 primary partitions and 1 extended (3 logical). View 6 Replies View RelatedI've got a 3TB HDD. So far I had it in my desktop(Win 7 Ultimate 64bit). I made backup copies of my dvd collection on it. Now.I decided to move the HDD to a Sahrkoon mobile rack. I pluged the rack into my laptop (Win 7 Home premium 64bit). It did not show up in the explorer and it asked for initialisation. On the first screen it asked to choose from MBR and GTP as it was a brand new HDD. I chose GTP as I did befor, but still did not show up in the explorer, it wants me to create a new volume. I did not do that.
So here are my queations:
Did I erase my data by doing this?
How can I get them back and make my laptop see my hdd?
Is it recommended to use the Secure Erase, often ? Once in 2 months ?Before i do the Fw update, should i Secure Erase ?i want to make a fresh install of Windows 7, today. Should i use Secure Erase before that, or not ?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a failed hard drive that I'd like to send back to get replaced but obviously want all my data wiped first. The problem is that the drive has failed so miserably that it won't even mount to any system in order to perform any sort of wiping. I've connected it to my system directly, via a USB to IDE adapter, and via an eSATA adapter in both Windows and Linux to no avail. Sometimes it will show up in the Device Manager under Hard Drives, but that's as far as it gets - it's never assigned a letter and doesn't show up in Disk Manager. It doesn't show up in Ubuntu when I perform an fdisk either so I can't perform a DD.
This is a bit of a catch 22 as the hard drive has failed to the point where it can't be read, but I'm not sure what measures are going to be employed to attempt to validate and read the data at the manufacturer when they test it for failure. If the drive all of a sudden starts working, there is too much personal data on there for me to just hope doesn't turn up.
