View 0 RepliesMy ST3500418AS 500GB died and took my Windows 7 with it, so I had to do a fresh install to another hard disk.
Unfortunately, Backup and Restore cannot see the backup location from my previous install, so I can't get my files back that way.
I presume that the VHD file I see in the backup folder is the system image of the previous install.
Is there any way I can extract my files from this VHD using some software package, or even convert it to another format such as ISO and extract my files that way?
There's a lot of great pics and stuff there that I don't even remember where I got it from, so I'm pretty desperate to get it all back.
Computer management -> Disk management -> attach VHD The VHD attaches fine, and it is the correct file. But when it attaches I get the message: "you need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" I clicked cancel, and then tried to right click -> explore. I then got the message: "F: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."Out of all the tutorials I have read, the file should open just fine and let me explore it. Why is it asking me to format the disk? And is it safe to do so?The file system is listed as "RAW" and the status is "Healthy(primary partition)"I don't want to lose everything on the system image! Can I/should I format the disk?

That opens up the directory of C: which is the external hard drive. Under WindowsImageBackup the computer name is identified followed by three entries:[CODE]It seems to me the Recovery and System Restore discs are not functional. View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently reinstalled windows 7 and the programs that I like and created a system image which I burned to a blu-ray and also placed on an external HDD.I just purchased a 120 GB SSD to replace my 250 GB old-skool hard drive which contains my windows installation. Can I use the system image to reinstall windows to the new SSD or would it be better to do a fresh install? Does windows configure itself differently during setup on a SSD rather than a traditional HDD? If so, will that cause any problems by restoring the image onto the SSD?I only ask because using the system image to reinstall everything would go a lot faster than reinstalling windows + all the programs I included on the recovery image.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have this laptop with Windows 7 as the operating system and with a capacity of 500 GB. My HDD was making loud noises and weird noises so I brought it to the shop and they told me to change the HDD because it might die anytime. So I did a full backup on my external hard disk, meaning that I cloned my laptop. I changed my 500gb HDD with a 240gb SSD. And when I tried to restore my backup files into the new drive, there's an error: "no disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found".
So I did some research on the internet and found out the reason of the error: it's because the image created was from a bigger drive than the new drive I put into my laptop. Even though my backup files are only about 100gb, I still cant restore it to my 240gb SSD because the image created was from my 500gb HDD. I am going to copy my backup files into an external hardisk with a capacity of 200gb and then backup from that drive and then I will restore it into my 240gb SSD. Will the backup file be considered as a backup from the 200gb drive or from the original 500gb HDD?
I don't know if this is a harware issue with my SSD, disk controller (motherboard), power supply or something else, but depending on what I'm doing, the computer will operate for a few minutes then freeze and eventually reboot itself. When it reboots, I get the "Bootmgr is Missing" message until I cycle power a couple of times. I've tried booting from the Windows 7 repair disk and typing "bootrec /fixboot", but the problem eventually returns.I can't get a full image update from Acronis because it hangs in the middle of the image, even if I say to ignore bad sectors. If I run the HDTune diagnostic on the SSD, it seems to always stop after about 3 minutes and always in the same spot, at 15,432MB. Is this a problem with the SSD or the disk controller?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried using 7-zip, but I don't have it in the menu when I right click which it's supposed to be. So I went to the series of iso files and extracted them to a new folder but 4 minutes later all the files were in just one big iso and when I tried to extract that, it said the archive couldn't be accessed. I'm not trying to make a bootable disk; I need the files within the iso and I would rather not waste DVDs unnecessarily.

View 3 Replies View RelatedA few months ago I went on a rampage (stupidly) trying to get rid of TuneUp Utilities. I'm not sure but I believe it was during some registry cleaning-up that I must have screwed something up.Ever since my System Restore hasn't worked right, I've not bee able to have a successful system restore since.Wasn't an issue until now when I very much want to restore. (I uninstalled Steam and I'm hoping a restore will reverse that so I don't have to download my game library again.)I tried to restore to a point created yesterday and got teh same error I've been getting:Quote:"System Restore failed to extract the file(C:$Extend$RmMetadata$Txf) from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during system restore.(0x80070005)" I've been trying to research the problem but have heard everything from "It's Norton!" (I do not run Norton nor have I ever) to "Unplug all your USB devices" to "Your accout doesn't have proper permissions."Does anyone know what this actually is and if it's fixable without formatting the system?

View 5 Replies View RelatedIts a bit complicated to state my situation, anyways, I have 2 HDD, and the PC won't boot if I removed the old HDD even though I've formatted the old HDD and win7 is on the new HDD.I have 2 physical HDD in PC
(1) 80GB old hdd and noisy. (not SATA)
(2) 500GB SATA hdd and sexy.
My powersupply only supports 1 SATA connection, and I don't have a DVD-Rom.I've unpluged the (2) and replaced it with my dad's SATA DVD-Rom to clean install Win7 64bit on the old (1), after I've finished, I removed the SATA DVD-Rom, I plugged back the (2), installed Win7 64bit ISO again from the (1) on (2), then I organized everything and split the (2) to E: and F:.
Everything's fine until I wanted to remove the old noisy hdd. When I did that, the PC started to bitch on me and didn't want to boot from (2).I've tried to rename (2)'s letter to C:, but it gave me 'invalid parameter' error. I doubt that it'll work by itself since it'll need to rename all the softwares' locations and stuff.so I went through another way, renaming (1) to a random letter like K: and wishing that'll work, I've restarted, shutdown'ed, and unplugged (1), didn't boot from (2).So it left me with only and only solution is by clean install, -but- I can't do it since I don't have an old dvd-rom nor do I have 2 SATA PSU cables... so I go back to the begging and...know that I have only 1 option by installing the win, is by the iso.
Now, what I'm thinking is that there's a possible way(maybe?) that I can replace Disk 0 box by Disk 1 box. Here's a picture to clarify it.So that's it, notice the 2 boxes down there? I'd like to switch Disk 0 by Disk 1 and then remove the old crappy 80gb hdd.
After adding two new SATA hard drives in my computer, I noticed that Disk Management lists SATA Drive C (which contains Win 7) as Disk 2. The other two drives are listed as Disk 0 and Disk 1.Since I connected SATA Drive C in SATA port 1, I was expecting to see it listed as Disk 0. SATA drives D and E are connected to SATA port 2 and 3 but are listed before the one connected in SATA port 1. And since the computer seems to work fine, I'm wondering if the disk numbers listed in Disk Management matter at all?

View 4 Replies View RelatedToday my Windows 7 laptop wouldn't boot, returning a persistent Windows Boot Manager error 0xC00000e9. It recommended allowing Windows to start in a diagnostic state, which didn't work. I pulled the hard drive and put it in a USB adapter which I plugged into another Windows 7 system. I was glad to see all the normal directories off the root. When I tried to change directories to UsersFrank to copy off some critical files, it said I didn't have sufficient permission. What I need to do to accomplish this? I thought I was logged in as Administrator on the second system while examining the drive. Later I may try putting the drive back into my laptop and booting off a CD to try to repair the disk, but my highest priority is to get some critical files off the drive as soon as possible.

The only option available is my hard drive partition on which i also had saved a system image. Though windows recommends External hard drive for backing up image when backing up the system.
I had a problem with Win7 not starting and the local shop I bought my computer from performed a Win7 reinstallation. I've just noticed a change in Disk Managagment which I'd appreciate clarification on. I'm running Win 7 Home Premium (64-bit)/TWO hard drives each 500Gb/8Gb of RAM, I also have TWO DVD-Rewriters.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just ran into what appears to be a bug with Disk Management under Windows 7. THe problem seems to go back all the way to OS reporting themselves as NT 5.2 or greater. XP x64 has the problem, Win2K3 server does and Windows 7 does. I don't have any version of Vista to check, so I don't know for sure but I'd bet its there as well. THe 32-bit version of XP which reports itself as NT 5.1 doesn't have the problem.
At any rate, the problem is Disk Management seems to count all Linux partitions as primary, even those which are logical volumes inside extended partitions on MBR drives. As such, if this erroneous count exceeds 4, it will refuse to create any more primary partitions, even though there are less than 4 actual partitions in the MBR table.
who dual boot with Linux could confirm this behavior. I've reported it on some of the MS forums, but no one seems to be interested.
In the Disk Management, I have an extra 0 MB GPT Protective Partition. Is that normal?
