View 0 RepliesComputer management -> Disk management -> attach VHD The VHD attaches fine, and it is the correct file. But when it attaches I get the message: "you need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" I clicked cancel, and then tried to right click -> explore. I then got the message: "F: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."Out of all the tutorials I have read, the file should open just fine and let me explore it. Why is it asking me to format the disk? And is it safe to do so?The file system is listed as "RAW" and the status is "Healthy(primary partition)"I don't want to lose everything on the system image! Can I/should I format the disk?
View 2 Replies View RelatedTrying to figure out why everything I have tried to download is unsuccessful because there are plug-ins missing or else they need extracting and I can't figure out how the heck to do the extraction thing and it is seriously stressing me because I got stuff I need to do and all I'm doing is spending time trying to get the software i need to do my "stuff" but I can't because they all need extracting.Used to be you just downloaded something and it installed and that was that. How the heck did I end up with this program thing that has tools including extraction and lists all the sub files? Where did it come from? it doen't say what it is so i tried to get a screenshot of it and attach it here but the attachment wouldn't work and so then I lost all what I typed looking for that and now I'm back retyping and i'm being technologically challenged and up until today I never though maybe I have alzheimers because i'm getting nowhere?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI got me a new 1TB HD and Windows 7 Pro 64 bit (not USB install, actual new DVD. I was trying to install it. The initial parts were painfully slow but they worked.I got to the part where it Copies Files. Then it goes to Extracting Files and it stayed at 0% for about an hour (before I gave up). I could still move the mouse and I clicked on cancel (and then it did very little again).

View 0 Replies View RelatedI have backed up all the files and emails from a faulty hard drive before inserting a new one and setting up Windows on it. However, because the drive was in such a bad way, I did't run Outlook to extract the email account settings - and now realise that these are hidden in the registry. I have tried importing the registry files (after doing some research on this), but cannot find the registry section which contains it.
Now that the the new drive is fully running (apart from the email account settings) - Windows Vista upgraded to Windows 7 - would it be too risky to re-insert the drive in the laptop to run Outlook and get the settings recorded ? I am concerned that it will cause error messages when I re-insert the brand new drive. I have thought about booting up a computer from the faulty drive, but think it may refuse to load because it's a different PC to one it came out of (Dell XPS M1530) - is this the case ?
I am trying to extract the files from Sysinternals Suite to my command directory in the System 32 file. However, WinRAR keeps giving me the diagnostic message "Cannot create blah.exe Access is denied". And I am running as the administrator. Is there any work around to this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have what I thought should be a relatively straightforward question: What do I type in the command prompt in Windows 7 to extract all the files from inside an .exe? I remember doing it once a long while back, but I forgot how and Google is being especially unhelpful. One result instructed me to navigate to the file's location and type:
filename.exe /A /P C:destinationfolder
but that didn't work. I assumed it was for an older Windows version. Google got its hit from a comment saying it didn't work on Windows 7...
I have an SSD as my OS drive and HDD as a storage drive. If I setup any program to save downloaded files to my storage HDD (specifically the program Newsleecher for Usenet downloading) and allowing it to extract the downloaded rar files into the same storage HDD, would the files still "go through" the SSD before finally saving/extracting to the HDD?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (RC). I cannot seem to figure out how I can have the virtual PC I've created boot from an ISO image. It was really simple in VPC2007, so I hope I'm just overlooking something.
Slightly OT, but can anyone who did not actually work on this product explain why it seems to be such a horrible step backwards from VPC2007? It seems to be slower, more complicated, and less-capable in many areas.
For those who want to try out SUSE LINUX 11.4 (KDE version) without hassle of install etc then you can download a vmware version with a lot of apps already installed. The link also gives a few other Linux distro choices. These should also work with VMPLAYER too if you don't have vmware workstation.VMware image and appliance download Use the Bittorrent download to keep the server load bandwidth down -- BTW this is a 100% TOTALLY LEGAL and GOOD use of Bittorrent - all torrents aren't illegal / pirated software. Loads of linux distros are supplied this way as well.(Hope not against Forum rules - but I do know lots of people have an interest in trying out / learning Linux and by running as a VM on Windows seems to me an EXCELLENT way of not only learning about Linux but also discovering the great use of Virtual Machines too).

The only option available is my hard drive partition on which i also had saved a system image. Though windows recommends External hard drive for backing up image when backing up the system.
Using preinstalled Win 7 Home Premium 64bit on an HP 6813w Pavilion. The original hard drive, a Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 1Tb crashed.1) System Recovery discs was made along with a System Recovery with System Image disc.2) A more current System Image was made on an external hard drive. The Hitachi was replaced with the same model. Checked bios to make sure it was installed correctly.Under System Recovery, Image Restore, Select a System Image Backup there is nothing in the table to choose from as far as a source (disc drive or external drive).A) System Recovery (3 discs) has the HP preinstall file folder on the 3rd disc but is not read by the System Recovery program.B) Under System Restore, Image Restore, Advanced, it asks for a network or driver to be installed. That opens up the directory of C: which is the external hard drive. Under WindowsImageBackup the computer name is identified followed by three entries:[CODE]It seems to me the Recovery and System Restore discs are not functional. Am not a technical person but I have taken this as far as I know how at this point.Printed out all the instructions from HP and Microsoft to follow step by step but the failed discs will not allow me to move forward.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI finally got Virtual PC installed and checked out XP Mode. I also have recovered the harddrive from my old laptop (dual boot XP and Ubuntu), and am wondering if it is possible to load one of these systems into Virtual PC via USB, instead of creating a virtual drive with a completely new system and re-instaling all applications.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI wanted to know what is the best way to install a bootable virtual operating system at start-up? I have installed VM Workstation 8 and wanted it to load windows 7 or XP at the Start-up like when you turn on the computer it loads/boots automatically in to the virtual OS. The reason I want to do this is that so i can set up the OS and take a snap shot of the machine and when my brother breaks his computer again i just restore the snapshot of the machine.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have setup some monitoring software in an XP Virtual Application. More specifically I used the "Virtual Applications: The 'Invisible' Third Mode" method described here.
My challenge is that I need to access the applications database file, and save it to a location on the host computer. It seems to me that the only way to save files from the Virtual Application is through the program itself, and because the program hasn't been designed to save the database file (e.g.: there is no "File - Save DB" command) I am stuck.
If I had setup a Virtual Machine and then installed the software into it I would have the advantage of being able to access the guest file system, however I would not have been able to start my monitoring software whenever a user logs onto the computer.
Is there any way of accessing the host system of a Virtual Application?
I'm using DVD Shrink to make iso's from DVD's and I've noticed that my ISO files are being stored in the VirtualStore folder. The file is fine and I can burn it back to DVD w/ no issues just strange how it doesn't store it in my root c: directory.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen i got my 500 gig internal HD, I messed up and the C: partition is too small. I can't move anything else outta the C partition into the much larger D partition. SO now I want to create a system image on my external HD, so I can re-install Win7 Pro, and not use any partitions. WELL, when i try to create a system image on this external, which sez only needs 396 gig,Windows tell me the external doesn't have enuff space for the shadow volume? There is nothing ON this external. Has 434 of 465 gig free. SO why is that NOT enuff space?

I ran a CHKDSK /R on the external drive and tried making a system image again, where it got about halfway and gave me the same message. What is going wrong every time?

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter my problems reported elsewhere, I decided to make a system image after I got things working. This was recommended by inference by one of the gurus who responded to my questions. So I got the system up again and I needed to learn about system images. So I hit F1 and read about creating a system image. Clicked here, clicked there, specified by external hard drive and told it to only include my system drive C:. Whir, whir, whir . . .. system image created. Now, I've cleaned the system of any possible Malware, so I want to create a new image of my system drive. So, I click here, click there and specify my external hard drive but NOW it won't let me include only drive C:, it wants to include my data drive, E:. The check box for E: is greyed out so I can't uncheck it.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI know how to perform a System Image, but now can't do so. I am using a Seagate Expansion External hard drive. Somewhere along the line there was a glitch and a red X (disconned) appeared on the drive icon in back up. I tried the same drive in an identical Windows 7 computer. Now I have red X's on both computers. The drive is fine, wiped and formatted, and the computer recognizes it. Still the red X on both computers. I can't get it off. The "start back up" tab is grayed out.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using 2 identical Dell Studio XPS 8000 desktop computers (wit Microsoft USB Natural Keyboards), 1TB hard drives, Windows 7, 64 bit platform) and I had no problem in the past making System Images. I have 2 separate external hard drives (1 is a 1TB Seagate Expansion External Hard Drive, the other is a 160GB hard drive.)It seems the System Image is approximately 149.GB, so will fit.I thought you had to erase the previous system image to put a new one on the same hard drive, but both computers said the drive was disconnected, and put a big red X on the drive location. Turns out I had to reformat the empty drives. I did, and the computers recognize both dries when they are connected, but the red X remains, and attempts to make a new system image fail. I am offered the "start backup" box, I can click on it, and all seems to be going well until the fill bar (green) stops about 1/6th of the way across, it stops there and j ust spins, not filling anymore, and if left long enough, it turns completely red and says the process failed.
View 4 Replies View RelatedDid a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit and all my apps, deleted Windows.old, defrag'ed and activated. Then created a SYSTEM IMAGE using Win 7 BACKUP and RESTORE, so far so good.
Win 7 and my apps take up 43.9 GB on the hard drive but the SYSTEM IMAGE it created on my external drive is only 23.7 GB. Tried it on my laptop with similar results ISO was about half the HDD. Does that sound right? Just seems the ISO should have matched the HDD GB-wise unless it compresses or something.
