Can Load A Physical System As Virtual PC

Feb 8, 2011

I finally got Virtual PC installed and checked out XP Mode. I also have recovered the harddrive from my old laptop (dual boot XP and Ubuntu), and am wondering if it is possible to load one of these systems into Virtual PC via USB, instead of creating a virtual drive with a completely new system and re-instaling all applications.

Physical DVD Burner In Virtual XP

Jun 17, 2009

Has anyone been able to get the VirtualXP environment to see a physical DVD burner as a burner, rather than just a DVD drive?

I've configured the setting to use my physical F: drive which is a LG DVD burner. However any software I have loaded into VirtualXP does not recognize this drive as a burner.

I can put a DVD in the physical drive and access it via the virtual environment. That part works just fine. But no burning capability.

I guess this would be moot if I could get Nero to install on Windows 7/64.

Physical To Virtual Machine & Share Boot Drive?

May 31, 2012

XP: Physical to Virtual & Share Drive w Host? Disk2VHD vs VMWare P2V? Physical-to-Virtual - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia My Thinkpad X61T with recent 8GB DDR2 Upgrade:I have an XP Pro 3 instance on a HDD able to use 2.99 GB RAM. I can backup bunch of data files to make size smaller.I have a Win 7 x64 instance on another HDD that can use most of the 8GB RAM. Now, I'd like to do two things:

1. Virtualize the XP instance and create a Virtual Disk/ Virtual Machine, with all of the Programs & Settings intact.

2. Run this XP on top of Win 7 x64 Host and "Slowly" Migrate Files/ Settings/ MetaData etc. from GUEST XP to HOST machine.I'd prefer to be able to SHARE "the C: or Boot Drive" between the GUEST & HOST machines (as it is mounted/ running) and be able to COPY some Specific Files/Folders using ROBOCOPY/ RICHCOPY to maintain attributes that could/ easily get lost with any other copy method.Thoughts/ suggestions, experiences, comparative reviews on using Software/ Tools out of the above listed page and how could go about doing both the things.do let me know UPDATE: Some advise/ suggestions I got on another forum was. Quote: If it were me, I'd use DISK2VHD on the XP hard drive, copy it to the Windows 7 machine, install XP Mode, and fire it up like that.An alternative, in some ways better, would be to use VMWare's P2V converter on the XP machine, install VMWare Player on the 7 machine, and load the virtual machine on there. If you're just worried about docs / settings / etc, I'd suggest skipping virtualization and just use Windows Easy Transfer to make a clean break. I've used VMWare and Virtual PC a LOT in the past, but not used in a long time. I know some functionality for items 1 & 2 exist but wanted to get a comparative idea between the various options LISTED in the Link. I guess I was a little out of touch when I realized so many products existed just to do P to V. I remember only VMWare had that for a while. For me the ability to "share" & "copy" these files is critical. PS: Also, I may or may not have enough storage on the Win 7 x64 drive so I'll have to run the guest VM from a USB 2.0 HDD. Would that work okay? For now, if the suggestion give by someone from the other forum still holds. What are the pros vs cons of Disk2VHD vs VMWare? (Given the specifics of my scenario?)Esp Sharing Drive & Copying using RoboCopy/ Richcopy (To maintain Modified/ Created Dates .. Wish there was way to keep Accessed Date)

Laptop Crashed With Physical Memory Dump Now Won't Load

Dec 28, 2011

Tonight right before bed and about 30 seconds before I was going to hit the shut down command on my laptop (specs below) my computer did a BSOD with a failed physical memory dump and shut down. Now it won't load and the recovery won't attempt any more. Since the BSOD it has a click and single beep. I have a second hard drive in the computer but I can't even access that either. I can enter setup menu and multi boot menu. If I let it sit for 20 minutes to load it brings up a notice saying my windows 7 isn't genuine and loads a factory set up. It is genuine, came from toshiba and I havent had a problem till now.

Spec I know:
Toshiba qosmio x500
Windows 7 professional
Intel I-7
Nvidia video ( not positive on model)
2 hdd

I don't know what's wrong but I need my laptop, Can I recover? Is it a driver issue? Hard ware? What?

Windows 7 Refuses To Load And System Repair Wont Load

Jun 25, 2012

I dont know if this is posted in the right area but I'm so desperate to get my laptop working its unreal. First it started off with my laptop crashing, I had totally forgot it needed to do a windows update and turned off my laptop in hopes that it would work properly. After that my laptop has not been working. The machine turns on and gives me two options. Start windows normally or do a repair. Upon starting windows normally, it loads so far before sending me back to the two options of start windows normally or repair. On the second time I clicked repair. My laptop then goes so far before presenting me with a blue screen that is usually the screen where my accounts are. The cursor still moves but it loads no further even after leaving it an hour. I decided to make a repair disk, hoping that the problem was because of windows. the disk loads, gives me a choice on the keyboard language then does nothing. I honestly have no idea what to do, I want to keep all the files safe on my computer as I havent backed them up and I have worked so hard on the projects.

I have installed VM Workstation 8 and wanted it to load windows 7 or XP at the Start-up like when you turn on the computer it loads/boots automatically in to the virtual OS. The reason I want to do this is that so i can set up the OS and take a snap shot of the machine and when my brother breaks his computer again i just restore the snapshot of the machine.

Accessing The File System Of A Virtual Application?

Dec 7, 2012

I have setup some monitoring software in an XP Virtual Application. More specifically I used the "Virtual Applications: The 'Invisible' Third Mode" method described here.

My challenge is that I need to access the applications database file, and save it to a location on the host computer. It seems to me that the only way to save files from the Virtual Application is through the program itself, and because the program hasn't been designed to save the database file (e.g.: there is no "File - Save DB" command) I am stuck.

If I had setup a Virtual Machine and then installed the software into it I would have the advantage of being able to access the guest file system, however I would not have been able to start my monitoring software whenever a user logs onto the computer.

Is there any way of accessing the host system of a Virtual Application?

Use 2nd Physical Drive As Sole System Drive

Jul 7, 2010

1) i installed new Windows 7 to drive E in addition to the original OEM Vista installed in drive C of my computer (drive D is the original OEM restore drive). i want to do a SYSTEM IMAGE to backup drive E only (because the windows with all my files I now use is in drive E) but there seem to be some boot files/system files also in drive C (which i don't want to use) and Windows indicate the SYSTEM IMAGE must include both drive C and E. how can i make drive E (the 2nd physical hard disk that the computer got) function exactly as "drive C" with ALL boot files/system in it. so that my SYSTEM IMAGE only includes drive E without wasting space to include the entire drive C which i don't use now. ( OR i am asking, if I can only copy/clone drive E, when both physical drives failed, i want to make sure my copied/cloned drive E alone can function to boot up windows. right now, it seems to tell me I have to backup/clone drive C as well for drive E when i don't even use drive C now).

2) my computer does not go to sleep mode automatically even i set it so. it keep turn on in normal mode. i don't know why. the BIOS indicated it is from march, 2010, so should be update. is there anything i can do to make it sleep automatically?

Windows Fails To Load After System Upgrade?

Dec 4, 2012

Old office computer:

Dell E510
P4 3.4 GHz
4 GB RAM
Radeon x800 PCIE
Crucial M4 SSD 120 GB
Windows 7 x64

New internals:

CPU: AMD A4 5300
Mainboard: MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 FM2
8 GB RAM
Corsair 450 watt PSU
Cheap Cooler Master Case

After assembling the new computer, I ran it without the system disk installed to make sure everything was kosher, and memory timings, etc. were correct. After verifying that, I shut it down and put the SSD into the new unit and booted it up. The system posts fine, but once the Win 7 startup image shows, the system restarts and brings me to the "start windows in safe mode/start windows normally" prompt.

Acer Aspire Z5610, Cannot Load Operating System From DVD

Dec 4, 2011

I have recently purchased an Acer Aspire Z5610 it is a second user buy.Straight away i noticed that it just wasnt working right which is half to be expected im sure when buying second user equipment. After doing some research on forums i came to the conclusion of erasing the C drive and reloading the OS with the system restore disc i created on the computer.I was getting all the way through and it was failing and suggested that there was a fault on the memory disc. Ive managed to get into the back of the computer and removed the RAM sticks and tried loading with just 1 and with both and all the different combinations of being in different ports. Now it gets to 2% and just stops loading altogether its just sticks at wherever its stopped.

Regular BSOD's Under System Load (logs Attached)

Jun 3, 2012

Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit (retail) installed for about a week.

I am trying to troubleshoot regular BSOD's on my system. They seem to occur during HD video playback (XMBC) or under other system load like downloading large files (from newsgroups) where the speed is fairly high (apx. 2mbps).

I recently replaced my single core CPU for a dual-core thinking it may help, but it didn't. Now, I'm wondering if it could be the memory. I did the windows memory check, and it reported errors, but I don't where to find the log or what to do next.

Ntoskrnl.exe Threads Hosted By System Idle Process Load 100%

Sep 23, 2012

I'm experiencing very annoying issue. CPU loaded with System Idle Process always. Because of that there is serious lag in iterfase. Problem appeared almost sumultaniusly on there different PCs. Using "Process Explorer" and going to System Idle Process - Threads I've found processes with names: ntoskrnl.exe!KiDespatch Interrupt+0x650 (on one PC) or ntoskrnl.exe!KiCpuId+0x6a0 (on two others)

I have three diffenent machines - one old acer laptop, one modern desktop and wmware virtual machine running on macbook. All have same OS - win 7 ultimate sp1. All of them are in the same network.

I've tried to localise issue by removing services and applications from startup - nothing, I've scanned machines with microsoft security essentials, Dr Web CureIT and Kaskpersky virus removal tool. Still nothing.

CPU get loaded as soon as system starts. Number of ntoskrnl.exe instances equals to number of CPU kernels. 1, 2 and 8 in my case on different PCs .

Windows 7 Virtual PC: "Cannot Attach The Virtual Hard Disk ..." Error?

Sep 6, 2012

Got a new Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit machine, found that it did not come with virtual PC. Downloaded the critical patch Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu and installed it. Windows Virtual PC shows up in my Start Menu. Good so far. I go through the steps to create a virtual machine and use the option to 'use an existing vhd file' and when I click 'Create' I get the above pop-up message "Cannot attach the virtual hard disk to the virtual machine. Check values and try again". A factual message but completely useless as with all error messages from Microsoft. I have tried the following:1. When I attach that vhd using Disk Management, it mounts in drive E:, I can see the files and browse the dirs in E:. In the Disk Management View, the drive shows up as 127 Gigs but 107 is unallocated space. The physical size of the vhd is only 25 Gigs2. Others in my company were able to create the virtual machine with the same vhd, checked the byte size and timing, so nothing is wrong with the vhd file itself.

3. Tried to create after shutting down all virus protection including the Micorsoft antimalware protection service. No luck4. Tried Vhd resize to resize the vhd to a smaller size (since it showed up in disk management as 127 Gigs, I thought maybe it was that size), but VHDResizer could not open the input file, gave an errors "Can only load fixed or dynamic drives"
