Physical DVD Burner In Virtual XP

Jun 17, 2009

Has anyone been able to get the VirtualXP environment to see a physical DVD burner as a burner, rather than just a DVD drive?

I've configured the setting to use my physical F: drive which is a LG DVD burner. However any software I have loaded into VirtualXP does not recognize this drive as a burner.

I can put a DVD in the physical drive and access it via the virtual environment. That part works just fine. But no burning capability.

I guess this would be moot if I could get Nero to install on Windows 7/64.

Can Load A Physical System As Virtual PC

Feb 8, 2011

I finally got Virtual PC installed and checked out XP Mode. I also have recovered the harddrive from my old laptop (dual boot XP and Ubuntu), and am wondering if it is possible to load one of these systems into Virtual PC via USB, instead of creating a virtual drive with a completely new system and re-instaling all applications.

Physical To Virtual Machine & Share Boot Drive?

May 31, 2012

XP: Physical to Virtual & Share Drive w Host? Disk2VHD vs VMWare P2V? Physical-to-Virtual - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia My Thinkpad X61T with recent 8GB DDR2 Upgrade:I have an XP Pro 3 instance on a HDD able to use 2.99 GB RAM. I can backup bunch of data files to make size smaller.I have a Win 7 x64 instance on another HDD that can use most of the 8GB RAM. Now, I'd like to do two things:

1. Virtualize the XP instance and create a Virtual Disk/ Virtual Machine, with all of the Programs & Settings intact.

2. Run this XP on top of Win 7 x64 Host and "Slowly" Migrate Files/ Settings/ MetaData etc. from GUEST XP to HOST machine.I'd prefer to be able to SHARE "the C: or Boot Drive" between the GUEST & HOST machines (as it is mounted/ running) and be able to COPY some Specific Files/Folders using ROBOCOPY/ RICHCOPY to maintain attributes that could/ easily get lost with any other copy method.Thoughts/ suggestions, experiences, comparative reviews on using Software/ Tools out of the above listed page and how could go about doing both the things.do let me know UPDATE: Some advise/ suggestions I got on another forum was. Quote: If it were me, I'd use DISK2VHD on the XP hard drive, copy it to the Windows 7 machine, install XP Mode, and fire it up like that.An alternative, in some ways better, would be to use VMWare's P2V converter on the XP machine, install VMWare Player on the 7 machine, and load the virtual machine on there. If you're just worried about docs / settings / etc, I'd suggest skipping virtualization and just use Windows Easy Transfer to make a clean break. I've used VMWare and Virtual PC a LOT in the past, but not used in a long time. I know some functionality for items 1 & 2 exist but wanted to get a comparative idea between the various options LISTED in the Link. I guess I was a little out of touch when I realized so many products existed just to do P to V. I remember only VMWare had that for a while. For me the ability to "share" & "copy" these files is critical. PS: Also, I may or may not have enough storage on the Win 7 x64 drive so I'll have to run the guest VM from a USB 2.0 HDD. Would that work okay? For now, if the suggestion give by someone from the other forum still holds. What are the pros vs cons of Disk2VHD vs VMWare? (Given the specifics of my scenario?)Esp Sharing Drive & Copying using RoboCopy/ Richcopy (To maintain Modified/ Created Dates .. Wish there was way to keep Accessed Date)

DVD Burner Problem

Nov 4, 2009

I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit from a DVD with no problems. Once Windows 7 booted, Device Manager saw the drive and the proper model number. Says it was working properly. I could even flash the firmware. What I can't do, is eject the tray or see the disc. I can't eject manually or via Windows 7. And Windows 7 doesn't see the Windows 7 Ultimate DVD stuck inside.

I flashed the firmware w/ Vista 64-bit firmware, Vista 64-bit from the previous version, XP, Vista 32-bit...didn't matter.

So I bought a brand new Sony drive people on Newegg had zero problems with in Windows 7. Just installed it and I have the same problem!!!!

Both drives are SATA. I have 2 SATA HDDs as well. The order shouldn't matter with SATA right? Still I changed the DVD drive to be first in the chain, rather than 2nd, but that didn't help either.

DVD Burner In Windows 7?

Nov 12, 2012

The drive will recognize a recorded disc and display and pla ythe contents. If I put in a blank disc, it will pop up the "What do you want to do" window and will start the process by allowing you to choose as USB or Data disc and will allow you to name the disc. The DVD window opens but you can not Drag and drop. Highlighting the files and clicking burn, copy and paste or send to options do not work either. The computer will just ding like it received an incorrect command. I do have a CD/DVD burning software program installed and it works to burn discs. I had not used it before today. This came installed on the system. I have not installed, deleted, downloaded or made any changes to my system. One day the disc burning function in Windows 7 worked and the next day it didn't. I ran the troubleshooter for burning discs and it said everything was fully functional. I prefer the Windows 7 option to running a separate program. I have rebooted and I also tried a rollback to a previous date. Nothing has worked.

The computer is HP and is about 1 yr old. It came with Windows 7 home premium. This is not an upgrade from a different operating system. I am very technical, but this has me stumped.

Windows 7 Virtual PC: "Cannot Attach The Virtual Hard Disk ..." Error?

Sep 6, 2012

Got a new Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit machine, found that it did not come with virtual PC. Downloaded the critical patch Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu and installed it. Windows Virtual PC shows up in my Start Menu. Good so far. I go through the steps to create a virtual machine and use the option to 'use an existing vhd file' and when I click 'Create' I get the above pop-up message "Cannot attach the virtual hard disk to the virtual machine. Check values and try again". A factual message but completely useless as with all error messages from Microsoft. I have tried the following:1. When I attach that vhd using Disk Management, it mounts in drive E:, I can see the files and browse the dirs in E:. In the Disk Management View, the drive shows up as 127 Gigs but 107 is unallocated space. The physical size of the vhd is only 25 Gigs2. Others in my company were able to create the virtual machine with the same vhd, checked the byte size and timing, so nothing is wrong with the vhd file itself.

3. Tried to create after shutting down all virus protection including the Micorsoft antimalware protection service. No luck4. Tried Vhd resize to resize the vhd to a smaller size (since it showed up in disk management as 127 Gigs, I thought maybe it was that size), but VHDResizer could not open the input file, gave an errors "Can only load fixed or dynamic drives"

Burner Acting Like A Storage Device?

My uncles laptop burner is acting like storage device. The icon on computer is a storage device icon. Every time he inserts a DVD movie it doesn't auto play, in windows media player you would usually see the DVD on the side but you see it as storage device icon which you can't play it. The only way to play it is by playing the .vob file on the DVD. I checked device manager and i found the burner is in the disk drive section which is really strange. Any ideas on how solving this?Details: Toshiba Satellite Pro L500

IDE DVD Burner Connection To SATA Motherboard?

Oct 1, 2011

By mistake, I purchased an Sony IDE DVD burner/writer with no cables from a discount store in Toronto. I can't return the item. I got an IDE to SATA adapter, connected everything and fired up and I get the power to the drive as I can open the DVD drawer, but the machine first gets stuck at the HP splash screen on my HP Compaq dx2300 mini tower, offering me standard options to enter the BIOS setings. If I don't do anything, machine continues to boot into Windows 7 with no further problems because secondary booting device is hard drive right after CD which is primary (as set up in BIOS by HP factory), but you can't use that brand new Sony IDE DVD burner.

How to make the machine recognize it? I set the jumper on the IDE DVD burner to MASTER, but some people on internet say you should remove the jumper completely and let the machine sort it out. Also, in control panel under 'Device Manager' it says I have IDE ATA/ATAPI channels 0 and 1 working properly. To me, it seems also like I have an IDE 40-pin connector on the motherboard. In BIOS however, all I see is 4 SATA ports although if I go into any of them, there is an option to auto-detect IDE hard drives. The only thing is that I don't need IDE hard drive detection, but IDE DVD-RW drive detection. Are there any differences between setting up IDE optical drives versus setting up IDE hard drives. Do I even have to be concerned about BIOS?
