Make Windows XP Mode Use A Virtual HD For Virtual PC 2007?
Dec 14, 2012
I upgraded to Windows 7, but I have a few software I installed on Virtual PC 2007 before. I use XP mode but can't find a way to use the virtual HD created with Virtual PC 2007. Is there a way to convert the virtual HD so that XP mode can recognize?

I'm currently building a Server as well as in the market to snag a new laptop. How would I go about making my computer a virtual machine so that I could port over to my new gig.
Reason for this is that eventually I would love to get myself more "Organized" with where I keep important documents versus random crap. Stored all over my various machines.

I'm interested in buying a laptop, one of the main uses will be running vmware with potentially server 2008 and/or a couple of Windows 7 workstations. I was wondering if vmware or hyper-v utilize an i7 to its full potential or will I not really notice any difference if I opt for an i5 instead.

Got a new Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit machine, found that it did not come with virtual PC. Downloaded the critical patch Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu and installed it. Windows Virtual PC shows up in my Start Menu. Good so far. I go through the steps to create a virtual machine and use the option to 'use an existing vhd file' and when I click 'Create' I get the above pop-up message "Cannot attach the virtual hard disk to the virtual machine. Check values and try again". A factual message but completely useless as with all error messages from Microsoft. I have tried the following:1. When I attach that vhd using Disk Management, it mounts in drive E:, I can see the files and browse the dirs in E:. In the Disk Management View, the drive shows up as 127 Gigs but 107 is unallocated space. The physical size of the vhd is only 25 Gigs2. Others in my company were able to create the virtual machine with the same vhd, checked the byte size and timing, so nothing is wrong with the vhd file itself.
3. Tried to create after shutting down all virus protection including the Micorsoft antimalware protection service. No luck4. Tried Vhd resize to resize the vhd to a smaller size (since it showed up in disk management as 127 Gigs, I thought maybe it was that size), but VHDResizer could not open the input file, gave an errors "Can only load fixed or dynamic drives"

I am just starting using Virtual PC - XP Mode in my office. I use it mostly for using a remote access application to connect to other PCs which are still in XP. The remote access application is not compatible with 7, hence XP Mode. With my Network Monitor tool, I noticed VPC drains bandwidth, and quite huge too within a short time range.

I have the latest (with all necessary updates) version of Virtual PC and XP Mode. I am running Windows 7 Enterprise. The XP virtual machine seems to work fine, except for the internet I tried the VPN connection, and tried the network adapter card, but still I can not get Internet on the XP Virtual Machine.

I just purchased a SYX Mid-Tower ATX Computer from Tiger Direct and it has the capability to run the Windows XP mode and the Virtual Mode. I have an OEM Windows 7 Professional 64 bit OS.My problem is that I only a dial-up internet connection, the XP mode file alone is > 500Mb in size. I calculated I would have to tie up the phone line for over a day and I only have one line.Is there a way to get the files on my work computer, which has a T1 line. However it is running Vista not Windows 7.I live 40 miles from my home computer to my work computer. and is a real pain to go all this distance. Microsoft is paranoid as usual. They forget that not everyone has a fast internet connection at home, or can even get one, especially in the country.I can not fathom that one can not get a CD/DVD that can check if your OS is a real one and not a fake ,along with a copy on the needed files. I have validated my computer at home.

At my work we are in the process of upgrading our network from server 2003 and xp on the clients to server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 on the clients. We have some productivity software that will not run on windows 7 64 bit so we have installed the XP mode virtual machine in order to run that software. The software installs fine and runs fine. The problem we are having is some of the software is used to program PLC's and so we need to be able to talk with these devices over the network at their IP addresses. I have configured the "virtual" ethernet adapter and windows 7 ethernet adapter the same. From the cmd prompt in win 7 i can obviously ping the devices and communicate with anything on the network however when I am running the XP mode I cannot access anything on the network. The virtual mode isnt recognizing any of the physical computers resources. Is there a way to make it so when running XP mode and the programs in XP mode the computer can communicate with other devices over the network?

I got a Canon Printer which have no Vista support from official site which I wish to use it in Windows 7. I know it's an old AIO printer but sometimes the scanner comes in handy, but problem is I only get hold of XP driver for it. I tried installed the Virtual XP mode beta and I try to setup my printer, but my driver setup won't go through, it said it can't detect my printer.
So just want to ask is it actually possible to install XP-only device in Virtual XP mode so I can use the device in Windows 7 environment ? I didn't use much of Virtual PC so I am not quite sure.

Ok, i have windows virtual PC with xp installed inside of it. I use it for work. works great no complaints. Except I had to disable Integration features in order for it to allow my Secure VPN to connect. Now my 4th and 5th mouse buttons do not work. Is there a way to make them work w/o enabling my integrated features OR is there a way to make my secure VPN work without having to disable integrated features?

Does anybody know where I can set the printer redirection in Windows 7 Virtual PC? I cannot find it and the Virtual XP Mode does not have the printers that are installed local on Windows 7.
I see everywhere on the internet that one of the features is printer redirection, but I can't find where to set it.

I've taken on a migration project for an SMB. They have an ancient application that they use and cannot find a replacement for.
The problem is that the application writes to the root of C: when creating mail merge documents, while this wasn't an issue on XP with the correct permissions its a problem with 7 due to UAC not letting standard users write to that location.
The software vendors have come back with the standard answer "turn UAC off" ... nope .. not prepared to do that.
I've managed to get a copy of the application so I could do some experimenting with Virtual XP mode. While this allows the application to run and create the mail merges correctly it seems to require the creation and setup of a VM every time a new users logs on.
Is there anyway to share a single VM between multiple users or could it be done by assigning published applications to all users on the host?

I am running virtual XP mode in WIn 7. In XP I am able to map a drive G: that is from Win 7 mapped drive (Microsoft Terminal Services). Great, in Explorer you can see the mapped drive.I need to set up an ODBC connection to a database on that drive. No problem I thought. When I need to select a drive in the Select Database window, I cannot see that drive, only A:, C:, D: , the default drives, G: is not shown

I have a win7 64 bit pro system that I have created a win7 32 bit virtual machine in because of one program that won't operate in 64 bit. The program needs 32 bit video drivers installed but I can't figure out how to do that.
I opened the setup on the video card cd but it says "the graphics adapter installed in this system is not compatible with the current set of drivers" and it won't install the drivers. The opening screen of the setup cd says "installed graphics adapter: not found".

Our office has an old program that we still need to use when upgrading our PC's to Windows 7. The program will run fine if you start a windows virtual PC and install and run it. However, based on the needs of our office, I need to be able to run Windows XP mode and simply have an icon for our users to click to take them to the application. If I install the program in windows XP mode, and then add a shortcut to the file under all users/start menu, a shortcut is placed in the appropriate place on the windows 7 machine and I can copy that shortcut ot the desktop. The program runs fine until you restart the computer. Once you restart the computer and double click the link on the windows 7 desktop to the program running in windows XP mode, it says:
Cannot start virtual application. The application is blocked from running as a virtual application.
I read some other posts saying to put a new shortcut in the all users/start menu folder. This works, but only until our users restart their computer. The next time the computer is up, the problem happens again. This is not an acceptable solution to have to create a new shortcut for each workstation each time the computer is restarted.

I'm going to upgrade my pc hardware, pretty much all of it since it's been "a while" (try 2009 since last time).
Is there any way I can migrate my Windows 7 professional to the new PC? I would like to completely format my HDD before moving it to my new machine and then reinstall my OS on it. It is a downloaded version so I haven't got a cd but it is legit, I have got the key and it is activated. Would there be a way to deactivate the key for this pc and then reactivate it on the new one with the same key?

I have Windows 7 and for reasons of my software, I installed Windows Virtual PC, who I have use for more than a year now. Last week, technical support did some checking on the system and now, I cant get access to the virtual computer. I received a message telling me that I need to activate in BIOS this option, however, I cant get access to the BIOS either. I update BIOS, but still do not work.
