Moving System Files To New Disk?
Dec 16, 2012
My system disk is about 80% filled up and I am looking to move the system files to a new disk for increased efficiency. I believe the way to go is diskcopy, creating a clone of current system disk to a new disk.smI am looking at EaseUS Disk Copy Home Edition 2.3.1 and MiniTool Drive Copy both freeware.

I've bought a Toshiba STOR.E D10 Zwart 1,5TB so that I can use e-SATA to connect it to my laptop. I've got a HP Probook 6555b with Windows 7 64bits. When I use the USB connection (this hard disk has both USB an eSATA) all works fine, no problem at all. When I connect it with the eSATA cable I can find the external hard disc and brwose through the files that are on it. However when I try to move files from my laptop onto the hard disk (or the other way around) after about 10 seconds it slows down and stops half way copying. Next Windows Explorer is not responding.

Today my Windows 7 laptop wouldn't boot, returning a persistent Windows Boot Manager error 0xC00000e9. It recommended allowing Windows to start in a diagnostic state, which didn't work. I pulled the hard drive and put it in a USB adapter which I plugged into another Windows 7 system. I was glad to see all the normal directories off the root. When I tried to change directories to UsersFrank to copy off some critical files, it said I didn't have sufficient permission. What I need to do to accomplish this? I thought I was logged in as Administrator on the second system while examining the drive. Later I may try putting the drive back into my laptop and booting off a CD to try to repair the disk, but my highest priority is to get some critical files off the drive as soon as possible.

Computer management -> Disk management -> attach VHD The VHD attaches fine, and it is the correct file. But when it attaches I get the message: "you need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" I clicked cancel, and then tried to right click -> explore. I then got the message: "F: is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."Out of all the tutorials I have read, the file should open just fine and let me explore it. Why is it asking me to format the disk? And is it safe to do so?The file system is listed as "RAW" and the status is "Healthy(primary partition)"I don't want to lose everything on the system image! Can I/should I format the disk?

Right now I've got a dual boot with xp and windows 7 on an IDE disk. I want to clone my windows 7 installation to a brand new, empty (Sata) disk. If I restart the system after the cloning, will the SATA disk have a boot record? What boot options will I have? 2 former ones and a messed up 3rd one?

I have 3 Virtual Machines on my 2TB drive, but it's close to full already and most of them are right at the end of the disk, where the drive is slowest. This doesn't make for an overly enjoyable experience when in use so, if possible, I'd like to move the VMs to the start of the drive in an effort to speed them up somewhat.I've got Auslogics Disk Defrag Professional, which allows for system files to be moved to the start of the drive, but I can't see an option for moving files of my choosing.Getting another drive and copying files across isn't an option either, as I don't have one to hand.

So, I have a disk with Windows 7 installed on the 3rd partition of that disk. I want to move that installation to the first partition of the disk.Repartitioning and boot settings aside, is there a way to do that? (besides using sysprep)Last time I tried that, windows would load slowly and after ''Preparing your desktop'' screen it would just show the one-color desktop, no icons, no explorer shell loaded.Alt,Ctrl, delete works, for running ''explorer'' from task manager, but computer, control panel or anything system-related does not open, instead it pops up an error window with, (e.x.)''{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}'' not found.

I am going to move the Docs that are on my E: partition on a HDD and put them on my SSD. I am going to take the HDD out of my PC. If I call the SSD partition E: also, will my Library still connect or do I have to make a new path?

I have a server (HP Proliant ML350 G5) that has a hard disk with Windows 7 Enterprise and Ubuntu (I'll talk about that on UbuntuForums, though). I recently acquired a Dell Dimension 9150. I moved the hard disk from the server to the Dell. Now Windows won't boot. It gets as far as the OS selection. I select Windows 7 from the OS choices. I don't even get the Starting Windows screen. If I try Safe Mode, I get the driver loading screen, but nothing more than that. When I try Startup Repair, it hangs at "Loading Windows Files".I cannot re-install windows because of programs and admin tools found on that hard disk.

I had to do a reinstall of a Win 7 32bit pro OS for a user, but before I did, I moved her data to my machine, did the reinstall on her and then moved her data to her profile.
I logged in as her, and verified that her "my docs" and favorites were there and that I can access them. However, all of the data icons are transparent (folders on her desktop and the actual data in her mydocs).
Most of it is pictures and movies and I can access them, but everything is clear. I did notice that even the favorites are transparent and they do not show in the browser (IE) even though the link is in fact in the Favorites directory in her profile.

Can any one tell me a good reason why when I move a folder of folders and files any executables in those folders loose their compatibility and administrative settings?
Is there any way to prevent this happening?
If not, is there any way to apply this setting for a collection of files rather than one by one?

I bought it primarily so I could play Pokemon Black online with uber leet hax level 100 teams (PokeGen/PokeSav/etc) and such. I put the Kingston into the adapter, then put the adapter into the SD port, and then I can view the card on my computer. At first I was able to put the .nds file for Pokemon on there, and also the firmware for Wood. I was able to open Black just fine on my DS and play it for a while. I made a save file in-game that I was going to later edit on my computer (using the programs mentioned earlier), so I saved, turned off the DS, and put the card back in my computer. I can view the .nds file as well as the .sav file that I made, however when I try to bring the .sav file onto my computer, I get an error reading "Can't read from the source file or disk". I get this same error when trying to put files on it now (if it matters, it was just some random 1MB video file I found that I tried to put on the card this time)

I currently have a HDD with my os and about 70gb of programs on it. I recently bought a 60gb SSD, and would like to transfer my os across to it. I also wanted to keep the programs working on the HDD they are on currently. If this is not possible i could just uninstall majority of the programs so that the os will fit onto the SSD, or i could completely reinstall all the programs, but this would take a lot of time. If so, i would like to know how much of my settings ect that i can save for the new os.

I have a new PC (HP) that came with an OEM version of Win 7/64, I also purchased an SSD that I had planned to use for a boot disk with all libraries on a second 1TB HDD.
I successfully installed Win 7 on the SSD and was happy for a bit, until I discovered some instabilities. Long story short, HP does not release the drivers for their in-house products and I could not stabilize the system, so I moved the SSD to Drive D and re-installed from the factory image. All the drivers I need are there and system is 100% stable.
is there a way to move the System partition over to the SSD so I get the 10 second boot that was so nice?

My system CPU fan remains at high speed and the system won't enter BIOS. I got a duplicate HP system and tried to move my Windows 7 HD from the older system to the new one without any luck. Apparantly Windows 7 is protected with some sort of hardware hash. I can't use repair or restore. How can I get my Windows 7 HD to work in this new system? Everything is legit regarding my software keys, etc.

I'm in a bit of a predicament. I have a operation of servers which are all the same model (HP DL140) The units don't have an optical drive, so a CD installation is not one of the options. I fiddled around with the bios to attempt installing from USB, but I didn't have any success at that either. The bios of these units are very fickle and very uninformative. I'd prefer to simply access the boot menu and select the USB, but I haven't a clue which key brings up the boot menu. So, I tried my hand at a different method. I took the harddrive of a server with a working OS and popped it into a server which did not have an OS. To my surprise, it booted normally. So this brings the question: Maybe I can just copy over the files of a working server onto the harddrive of another? I'd imagine since the files transferred over are literally the same, there shouldn't be any problem.

Whenever I move folders from my shared folders ( Users/public/public documents for example) it copies the files instead of just simply moving them. The folders are on the same hard drive/partition so there does not seem to be any reason it should start doing this. I dont know what I could have changed on the computer to cause this to happen either. it is quite a frustrating problem however because large files take a while to transfer when they should be moved instantly.

I was moving my pictures to different folders, I was dragging and dropping rather than copying and pasting, but I realized after I was done that they weren't being passed to the folders and they're also nowhere to be found.
I don't know what to do and I'd hate to think my files are lost forever.
My computer is a Dell Inspiron 15, intel core i7.

Last night we purchased a new pc with Win 7 loaded. We have an old and dying XP. It has been backed up using the Win backup facility to an external hard drive (assesories/system/backup). I imagine that restoring the data files will not be a big problem, but: She does not have all the original "program" CD's.It is a home pc and NOT networked. I read that a parallel cable could be attached between the two pc's and then programs "transferred" in this manner. Is there another way

I have just moved back from mac to pc. I have a 4 year old LaCie External drive that has everything backed up from my mac. I know most of it will be useless but I need my budget spreadsheet and want my photos, and stuff like that. Trouble is when I connect it to my new pc, Gateway One, is shows up in Devices and Printers but not as a clickable drive in My Computer. It's been tried on several other computers and laptops, all running windows 7, with the same result. Could this be because it was used on a mac? I thought it would at lest show up, then I could get off it what was usable. The paperwork that came with the drive says it's good on either pc or mac. Or could it be too old for windows 7? I did go to their web site and download drivers, didn't help. By the way, my son tried it on his works laptop, running xp. He's not allowed to install anything so he couldn't let the windows drivers run. We thought maybe it still might show up in My Computer, but it didn't.

I am the equipment manager for a DJ service. I recently talked my boss into letting me build windows based systems for our DJ's to use instead of a prebuilt DJ console that would cost more than twice what my design would. One of the biggest concerns we have is the ease of one of our DJ's to simply bring an external HDD with them and copy our music library while they are at a gig. Licensing and legal use of music is a top priority to us. All of my searches online have not yielded any useful information. I need to find a way to restrict a user from copying and moving files, but still give them access to play the music files. Is there a way to do this without buying an extra security program?
