Oct 27, 2009I now realise i should of hit custom install, and installed it on another drive, is it to late to move them, the only things in there are what were installed by microsoft.

Moving Program Files From HDD To SSD?
May 17, 2012I currently have a HDD with my os and about 70gb of programs on it. I recently bought a 60gb SSD, and would like to transfer my os across to it. I also wanted to keep the programs working on the HDD they are on currently. If this is not possible i could just uninstall majority of the programs so that the os will fit onto the SSD, or i could completely reinstall all the programs, but this would take a lot of time. If so, i would like to know how much of my settings ect that i can save for the new os.

I imagine that restoring the data files will not be a big problem, but: She does not have all the original "program" CD's.It is a home pc and NOT networked. I read that a parallel cable could be attached between the two pc's and then programs "transferred" in this manner.Is there another way

Oct 24, 2011I have just moved back from mac to pc. I have a 4 year old LaCie External drive that has everything backed up from my mac. I know most of it will be useless but I need my budget spreadsheet and want my photos, and stuff like that. Trouble is when I connect it to my new pc, Gateway One, is shows up in Devices and Printers but not as a clickable drive in My Computer. It's been tried on several other computers and laptops, all running windows 7, with the same result. Could this be because it was used on a mac? I thought it would at lest show up, then I could get off it what was usable. The paperwork that came with the drive says it's good on either pc or mac. Or could it be too old for windows 7? I did go to their web site and download drivers, didn't help. By the way, my son tried it on his works laptop, running xp. He's not allowed to install anything so he couldn't let the windows drivers run. We thought maybe it still might show up in My Computer, but it didn't.

Apr 23, 2012I've had this laptop for a few months now and I got another hard drive called Data which is empty, my other hard drive called OS is where everything goes and I wondered if I can move games and other files to my Data hard drive without corrupting them. And if possible can I move a file called Program Files to my Data hard drive without causing any problems. My pc takes a long time to restart which I guess my OS decides. My OS got is 80gb of 238GB and my Data is 332gb big, with no files in it.

Nov 3, 2012I have 465gb of files and folders on a 500Gb hard drive that needs to be cut/pasted higher in the folder hierarchy.

The reason this happened is my HD broke down and I had to send it to a company (ChronoDisk) to extract the information to another HD. This is how they sent it.
I need to move those files because the path used by many programs/files are broken. Is it possible to do this without actually cut/pasting? My guess is it might crash half way or simply not work at all because there is not enough empty space to make a cut.
Moving C Drive Directories And Files After Re-installing?
Jan 6, 2013I've just re-installed Windows 7 64bit and am moving some files onto my "Programs and Data" hard drive. With the previous install I have moved a number of the Win 7 files onto the this HDD, and I want to do the same now. Since that drive now contains my previous copies of the these directories and files, and I want to keep them, how can I merge the contents. Is it as simple as copying what new content I want from the C drive, changing the location of the USER files in Windows to the HDD, then deleting what is on the C drive?

I know how to redirect personal folders, but how do I redirect the Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders to a different drive. These folders already have some data in them; should that date be manually moved to the other drive or are they OK where they are?Actually, the real problem I'm having is browsing my computer as Administrator. My current account is an administrator type, but it seems that that is not the same as actually being logged on as the account Administrator. I'm sure if I was right clicking on the folders I want to redirect as Administrator, the Location tab would pop up just fine.

I changed registry so that "Program Files" is default on the storage drive. May 9, 2010I saw on microsoft site that users would benefit by using ssd as boot drive and have users folders and personal data on second drive may be even installed programs. Making backups of personal data easier and also if you have to format the drive with the os you don't have to move personal data. They don't say how to do this (although one place on their site they say go to the folder go to properties and change location of folder, which many people have had issues with this and it doesn't allow you do do this with all folders and it doesn't let you move the users and programs with out issues or weird broken workarounds registry edits).
1.) What I need or what we need to make or find is a step by step guide on how to do a dual drive set up that doesn't mess up the os, and doesn't allow the OS or programs to write to the old location.
2.) Also make a list of everything that could me moved or stored on the 2nd drive instead of on the SSD so that it takes up less room. Or move things to the normal drive that make many reads and writes to the ssd, that would shorten its life span with no performance gain.
3.) Also make a list of the items and fils and folders that would be best on the SSD for performance reasons stability ect, temp files etc., things that would make the computer and OS and programs run quickest.
Additional Information : Windows 7 OS to install on SSD as boot drive or system drive, and have all user files and folders, and maybe some or all program files to install or reside on the 2nd drive normal hard drive. How do you make SSD your primary drive and all data and files on your second hard drive normal spinner hard drive with out registry edits etc.

Jul 3, 2012Currently my Windows 7 is on the C drive, now my question is this: Is there a way I can say put in a SSD, then copy my entire windows and the Programs Files, Program Files x86 and the users folder to it, then switch my old HDD to the D drive and the SSD to the C and have it work just fine? Is there an easy way to do this? or will it require me to reinstall windows to do it? Been thinking about getting a 120 GB ssd for my os/program drive, and using my 1.5 tb drive as storage.

Jun 18, 2012I have a program installed under "C:Program Files (x86)CompanyNameSWName". When the program runs it's supposed to copy some files, say FROM "C:Program Files (x86)CompanyNameSWNameDrivers*.abc TO "C:Program Files (x86)CompanyNameSWNameDrivers*.xyz
The program works on every machine it's been installed on, except for one (customer's) Win 7 64-bit machine. On that machine, nothing happens.
It's noteworthy that on that same machine an "insufficient access privileges" (or some such) message pops-up when an administrator trys to copy a folder to "C:Program Files (x86)CompanyNameNewName".
why this particular Windows 7 machine is being so picky? What should I have the installer do so that the application will be able to copy/rename its own files?

Sep 18, 2011I had to do a reinstall of a Win 7 32bit pro OS for a user, but before I did, I moved her data to my machine, did the reinstall on her and then moved her data to her profile.
I logged in as her, and verified that her "my docs" and favorites were there and that I can access them. However, all of the data icons are transparent (folders on her desktop and the actual data in her mydocs).
Most of it is pictures and movies and I can access them, but everything is clear. I did notice that even the favorites are transparent and they do not show in the browser (IE) even though the link is in fact in the Favorites directory in her profile.

But I had the details before, but it when I was copying files. Is this normal for Windows 7?
Moving Files With An SD Card?
Feb 23, 2012I bought it primarily so I could play Pokemon Black online with uber leet hax level 100 teams (PokeGen/PokeSav/etc) and such. I put the Kingston into the adapter, then put the adapter into the SD port, and then I can view the card on my computer.At first I was able to put the .nds file for Pokemon on there, and also the firmware for Wood. I was able to open Black just fine on my DS and play it for a while. I made a save file in-game that I was going to later edit on my computer (using the programs mentioned earlier), so I saved, turned off the DS, and put the card back in my computer. I can view the .nds file as well as the .sav file that I made, however when I try to bring the .sav file onto my computer, I get an error reading "Can't read from the source file or disk". I get this same error when trying to put files on it now (if it matters, it was just some random 1MB video file I found that I tried to put on the card this time)

Dec 28, 2012Whenever I move folders from my shared folders ( Users/public/public documents for example) it copies the files instead of just simply moving them. The folders are on the same hard drive/partition so there does not seem to be any reason it should start doing this. I dont know what I could have changed on the computer to cause this to happen either. it is quite a frustrating problem however because large files take a while to transfer when they should be moved instantly.
