I have a 120GB SSD for system etc. I have a 1TB HDD for everything else. How do I change the default program files folders (x86 and regular) so that when I am installing a program the first choice is on this second drive instead of C?

However, I want to some how put my users folder and program files folder onto my 500GB HD. Ive tried multiple times to mess with the registry settings but it doesnt seem to work..? Ive also tried an application but that just meant when I restarted my PC it diddnt recognise my user account meaning I couldnt log in at all forcing me to reinstall again. I basically want only OS & a coupel of aps on SSD while having my desktop/users/prorgam files on my 500gb.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently uninstalled itunes. When i restarted my PC i noticed that my internal secondary drive was missing. Reboot and still nothing. Powerdown wait 30 sec and swjtch back on: still missing. I finally opened it up unplugged it and replugged it and it found it again.
I then rebooted again and again it was missing repeated steps above same result.
Dont know what to do ant its a hassle to open it up every time. Windows 7 ultimate. Sata Seagate barracuda 2tb
I have a bit of a strange question about installing the Windows 7 upgrade. I'll try to keep it as simple as I can. Firstly
1: I currently have Windows XP SP3 Home Edition installed (and activated) on my 160GB WD Caviar Blue hard drive, which has 8MB cache. It's getting a bit full now.
2. This hard drive is one of the few remnants of a Dell machine I bought a few years ago.
Surprisingly, the restore disk still works and activates, even though I've changed the motherboard and a number of other things over the years. My last reinstall was about a year ago, and I had no problems reactivating whatsoever - I didn't even need to phone Microsoft.
However I doubt it'll install and activate on a new hard drive - particularly as I've also changed the DVD drive since my last activation (as the old one broke), literally the only things remaining from the old system would be the RAM and the processor.
2: I have purchased a 500GB WD Caviar Blue with 16MB Cache
3: I intend to buy Windows 7 Pro Upgrade from TheUltimateSteal for £30. I'm a student, but will be graduating soon, so it seems sensible to take advantage of this offer while I can.
4. Clearly I can install Windows 7 in the normal way onto my current drive and use the 500GB drive for backing up my files, which I'll do if that's the only option.
5. However, if I did that I would not be taking full advantage of the extra cache of the new drive. It would be nice if I could use that for my primary installation to speed things up a bit.
So here's my question:
If I start the upgrade process having booted from the 160GB drive, but during installation select my 500GB drive as the target for the installation, will Windows 7 install and activate correctly? Will it recognise the pre-existing installation, even though it was on a different drive?
If not, then:
If I install my Dell restore disk on the new drive, and don't activate Windows (which presumably I won't be able to), and then run the Windows 7 upgrade on THAT drive, will Windows 7 install and activate correctly?
Basically, is there a legitimate way of installing a Windows 7 Upgrade onto the 500GB drive, on the basis of there currently being a valid XP installation on the 160GB drive?
I have no intention of continuing to use XP after the upgrade, if I am able to install and activate Windows 7 to the new drive, then this will serve only as a backup for my files.
Has anybody tried something similar and succeeded/failed?
I've already read the tutorials on here about doing a clean install of Windows 7. I'd like to avoid dodgy workarounds, as I'd rather not run into problems further down the line when it comes to updates and that sort of thing.

I tried to repair start up from the install disk (3 times) it did not work. when I plug the second drive I am able to start up again. I would like to remove the storage drive and replace with a larger. I bought a wireless seagate 2tb free agent goflex hard drive and wanted to put the 2 tb hard drive into the computer and take my 1 tb drive from the computer and use it in the wireless system.

Specifically, I use FF as my default browser, but I would like to use IE for a couple specific links. I know I can just open IE but it would be convenient to create an icon/link on the desktop to the location, and when opened, to be opened by IE rather then the default program for that extension (FF).I just realized that I could make another extension, a new one not used by any program, and just make that extension opened by IE by default then rename the link on the desktop, I think that would work, but is there a way to edit the link and tell it specifically what program to use when clicked rather then the default?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently ran into an issue where this installation on Windows 7 Pro 32-bit is trying to open up all my programs in Word, they all have the MS word icon as well, so for instance, when I click on Nero, it will try to open it up in word and we get an error because it is not a word file. This is on all Program .exe files. There are no options to change the file association in the default programs in control panel. I have only seen a few fixes for this which involve the registry, I have checked these, however, all registry keys are correct. System restore fails as well, have tried multiple restore points to no avail. We have also ran norton, and malwarebytes on the system is it runs clean.

Yes, it's crappy design, but it's a game editor for an older game, and I'm evidently the last tech-savvy admin. That, or a sucker.I copied them onto the desktop, and am trying to copy them from there into the system32 directory. I hit the UAC prompt, and select continue. I don't use the default downloads folder for storing my downloads and I have configured all my browsers to save files to another location. But since last month, I noticed these small ".tmp" files being created in default downloads folder. I've been using Win7 Ultimate for almost 3 years now and I've never encountered this before. Or is there any way that I can see what program has created these temp files.
BTW, I use multiple browsers, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and sometimes IE8. I'm pretty sure it's not IE8 and Firefox coz I've been using them for a long time and they've never created temp file in 'Downloads' folder. I've recently installed Chrome and Opera and right now Chrome is my default browser. I went and cleared all my browsers' cache files using their own method withing the browser, but they are still there. Really annoying. I know I just can delete them, but I want to know which program has created them.
I would like to move data files from the C Drive to the D Drive and make the D Drive the default drive.

I made 2 partitions C being 30gb(supposed to be 450gb) and D being the 450gb(supposed to be 30gb). How do I switch partitions? Make C become D and vice versa?
Also, how do I make everything I download and install in the future use
I've noticed that I have two program files. One just states Program Files and the other Program Files (X86). I believe that the one with (x86) pertains to the Win7 64 Bit however, is the other program file necessary? Since I have Win7 Ultimate 64 Bit don't you think that all files and folders should go to it?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a computer with three partitions, the first with 100GB exclusively to Windows 7 (already installed), a partition for applications and another partition for personal files (photos, text, music, movies, etc.). I wonder how to configure the location of "My Documents", so that all users have only their personal files on drive of personal files. In Windows Explorer changed in each of the users the location of the Documents, Music, Video and Pictures.
- After changed the location of the folders above, there is still the same folders in C:users , and there are user settings that are there defined, eg Desktop, in C:Users. Is there any way to move all settings and folders to another drive?
- Is there any way to do this operation automatic? for future users I will have to repeat the same operation, how can I indicate that all future users will have their settings and documents specified in this specific drive?
I installed some applications and found that some applications did not demand that the location where it was set to be installed the application, having been installed in C:users and C:Program Files, intended that all applications (except for windows and Office) were installed in drive applications. How do I specify that this is the default drive for installation applications? Keeping the installations of Windows + Office in this drive. Applications installed by the administrator are available for all users or must be given access to other users ? How done? In the drive file, which should contain the users and shared files, meant that each user only gets access their documents and shared. Where and how can make this configuration?
I noticed that there were 2 program files folders. After installing a few programs, I noticed they were all going to X86 folder, so I thought this was an install error on the shipping companies part, and deleted the unnumbered program files folder. Is there a way to fix my messup ? will it affect performance ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a virus, which I deleted with Spybot S&D and Eset Nod32 antivirus (it may not have been removed completely). For now the infected PC is not connected to the internet.
I found the virus and started scan by looking into msconfig. I saw two objects:

The program files folder is hidden by the virus, you go to C: and it is not there. What can I do about it?? Its not hidden through the standard windows hidden files (I have showing of hidden files enabled, and I still cannot see it).
I tried combofix but it doesn't work for OS higher then XP, how can I restore my Program Files folder??
The Program Files is still there (programs that are installed there are working, and you can find things there through search in start menu, but you cannot see the folder itself).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm new to the forum, just signed up.I have a few questions about installing software on 64-bit.I am running windows 7 ultimate 64-bit and noticed some thing.Some of the software are installed in the program file (x86) folder, some of them in the program files folder by default.I made sure that i found and install 64-bit compliant software.
1. Why are 64-bit apps being installed in the (x86) program files folder when they are in fact 32/64-bit versions?
2. When i get prompted to choose the destination folder, can i manually select the program files folder and will it change or compromise windows?
I have a dual boot machine, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and Kubuntu 9.10. Everybody was getting along just fine.
Today I booted from Windows, no problem; booted Kubuntu, no problem; then later rebooted to Windows. I now get a message that my Program Files (x86) folder is corrupt and unreadable. [While in Kubuntu I did nothing other than look at the list of files using Kubuntu. No file was opened or modified.]
- I tried dropping to a command prompt to run chkdsk (as recommended by the error screen) but cmd is corrupted
- So I booted off the Windows 7 disk and was able to run chkdsk - no problems found (with the /f and later the /r switches)
When Windows 7 opens, all my 32-bit programs are unusable, and I can't explore the Program Files (x86) folder. Properties lists it as 0 bytes. However, when I browse the folder from a Kubuntu boot, everything seems normal and is accessible.
I (gently) used some Kubuntu ntfs tools (such as ntfsfix to flag the volume as dirty so Windows would check/repair the volume on boot) but got nowhere. [I have no idea if this is useful, but I included the ntfsinfo output from both my Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders.]
