Program Files (x86) Folder Is Corrupt And Unreadable

Dec 22, 2009

I have a dual boot machine, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and Kubuntu 9.10. Everybody was getting along just fine.

Today I booted from Windows, no problem; booted Kubuntu, no problem; then later rebooted to Windows. I now get a message that my Program Files (x86) folder is corrupt and unreadable. [While in Kubuntu I did nothing other than look at the list of files using Kubuntu. No file was opened or modified.]

- I tried dropping to a command prompt to run chkdsk (as recommended by the error screen) but cmd is corrupted

- So I booted off the Windows 7 disk and was able to run chkdsk - no problems found (with the /f and later the /r switches)

When Windows 7 opens, all my 32-bit programs are unusable, and I can't explore the Program Files (x86) folder. Properties lists it as 0 bytes. However, when I browse the folder from a Kubuntu boot, everything seems normal and is accessible.

I (gently) used some Kubuntu ntfs tools (such as ntfsfix to flag the volume as dirty so Windows would check/repair the volume on boot) but got nowhere. [I have no idea if this is useful, but I included the ntfsinfo output from both my Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders.]

Recover Files From A Corrupt Unreadable NTFS Harddrive?

Jan 31, 2012

I'm in desperate need to recover things from my corrupted D drive. When I click on it, it says D: is not accessible. The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable. When I restart it always does chkdsk for that drive, but it can't repair the corrupt master file table, and it's the same result where the drive is unreadable. I used the Getdata recover my files software to recover the drive. It didn't find the things I desperately need, and I noticed a bunch of files it recovered is now corrupt. The most important thing I need to recover is a windows movie maker project that I've spent hours upon hours upon hours on for a music video. I so desperately need that .mswmm file. This software found just about all of my windows movie maker projects except that one, just my luck.

The second most important thing I need is my Adobe Audition session files along with the wav's for the sessions. I have a new computer I should be getting today, and my friend will be over in 2 days. I need to figure something out quickly cause he will need to format the drive which will make it lose everything. He is pretty sure that the drive will be unreadable on his laptop which he's bringing over.It recovered 2 936gb files and a 465 gb file with no file extensions that were labeled $BadClus~$Bad_1 $BadClus~$Bad_3

Boot Corrupt And Unreadable, Repair/re-install Of Windows Fails

Nov 26, 2012

It's my daughter's computer. A little e-Machine, 250G HD, Windows 7 32-bit on it. Out of nowhere her computer wouldn't boot up. I can get it to try to boot using the Windows disk, it gets so far, and then the repair fails saying:

The file or directory C:/Boot is corrupt and unreadable. Please run chkdsk utility.

I try to re-install. she had backed up everything on my external just days before. It gets near the end, and then the same error comes up. I cannot get into anything else. Nothing else will load. I don't even know how I can run chkdsk. Unfortunately the computer is about three years old and she can't remember the specifics except there is only one HD in it. She had no internet at her place so it's not because she suddenly installed something. She was using it to watch movies and listen to music mostly. I'm at wits' end, can't figure it out.

Program Files X86 Folder

Feb 2, 2013

I've noticed that I have two program files. One just states Program Files and the other Program Files (X86). I believe that the one with (x86) pertains to the Win7 64 Bit however, is the other program file necessary? Since I have Win7 Ultimate 64 Bit don't you think that all files and folders should go to it?

Hidden Program Files Folder

Jul 18, 2009

I had a virus, which I deleted with Spybot S&D and Eset Nod32 antivirus (it may not have been removed completely). For now the infected PC is not connected to the internet.

I found the virus and started scan by looking into msconfig. I saw two objects:

element: _scott_-{97BAE4-4CF2-5FFC-B9DB 1D 1D324E}
localisation: C:UsersMikakaAppDataRoaming\_scott_css.exe

element: _scott_vrc
localisation: C:Program Files\_scott_svchost.exe

The program files folder is hidden by the virus, you go to C: and it is not there. What can I do about it?? Its not hidden through the standard windows hidden files (I have showing of hidden files enabled, and I still cannot see it).

I tried combofix but it doesn't work for OS higher then XP, how can I restore my Program Files folder??

The Program Files is still there (programs that are installed there are working, and you can find things there through search in start menu, but you cannot see the folder itself).

Here is a screenshot of my C: drive

64-bit Software Installs In (x86) Program Files Folder?

Jun 7, 2011

I'm new to the forum, just signed up.I have a few questions about installing software on 64-bit.I am running windows 7 ultimate 64-bit and noticed some thing. Some of the software are installed in the program file (x86) folder, some of them in the program files folder by default.I made sure that i found and install 64-bit compliant software.

1. Why are 64-bit apps being installed in the (x86) program files folder when they are in fact 32/64-bit versions?

2. When i get prompted to choose the destination folder, can i manually select the program files folder and will it change or compromise windows?

Write Protected Sub-folders Below The Program Files Folder?

Sep 19, 2012

I recently reformatted my hard disk and re-installed Windows 7, and when I try to edit any files in the subdirectories off any on the directories in the C:Program Files directory, I get 'protected' errors. I found that I could not create files or edit files anywhere below these directories. It turns out that everything in the Program Files folder and below is write protected. I tried changing one of the subfolder's properties and marked everything as Not Read-only, but I still couldn't create/edit files there.I was running Windows 7 before the hard disk crapped out, and I was able to modify the au3.propertied file with no problem.I know that Microsoft wants to put all data files in the C:User... directories, but the program I'm trying to change is AutoIt (SciTE), and I don't think here's a way to change the location of the properties files.I Googled in the Windows 7 support site and found a link to a video telling how to work around this. You have to change permissions of the parent folder and all files/folders below it.

How To Display Files Inside "Program Files" Folder

Aug 5, 2010

I have a program that uses it's own library. The path to this library can't be changed, and it's inside the "Program Files" folder. And the software itself has to be installed inside "Program Files" too, otherwise it won't work correctly (it's a new release and still a bit buggy). Now, when I add something to this library, it's supposed to be present in the library folder. BUT Win 7 doesn't show me any files that have been created by programs inside the "Program Files" folder. The folder where the new library is supposed to be is empty. But the library is there inside the program, so it has to be somewhere. Now, how am I supposed to backup those files if I can't access them?

File Explorer, One Corrupt Folder?

Aug 30, 2012

There is one specific folder in the Documents library, which when opened directly (like from a shortcut on the dekstop) only shows "corrupted" files with unusable strings for all file names and extensions. However, when opened in tree view, the files appear as they should. So at least it's reassuring that the folder contents are still there and can properly be read and changed. But the issue is still inconvenient and worrisome.I have already tried chkdsk /f on the partition and even mirrored the whole volume to a new harddrive, but that didn't help. I also tried copying the whole folder to another location, it shows up just fine that way as well.

Cannot Remove Corrupt Folder In My Documents

Jan 25, 2010

I have windows seven home premium on a lenevo 3000 N100.I was running Super Anti spyware free edition and it said that a folder in my documents which contained 2 MP3 files and 2 image files was corrupt. I know it was not like that to begin with as I downloaded it on Jan 7 and have listened to the songs a few times since then. I can't delete it because it is corrupt. It recommends I run chkdsk. I go to it by going to my computer, drive c, properties, tools, check disk. Then it says it can't run it when windows is in use and asks if I'd like to schedule a scan the next time I turn on my computer. I have restarted and shut down my computer atleast 5 times now and it will not start that scan, it'll just boot up like it normally would.

Corrupt Program File...unable To Be Fixed?

Nov 12, 2011

The laptop (which was running) was OK (battery just kicked in, obviously). (Win 7 32bit)But the PC (I was working on) wasn't !!! (Win 7 64 bit)When the power came on five minutes later, I restarted the PC.Everything appeared fine, however the program which was open and that I was working in, wouldn't "fire up"....and "windows was trying to find a solution to the problem"....as it does, or rather doesn't.FYI The program (.exe) is a data mining, bridge program (between a data feed to a financial platform. (also "firefox", which also was open, couldn't open either).First I looked at "System Restore" and noted that it said that "Rapport" had updated (at the date and time of the power outage), so I contacted Trusteer via their online chat facility. They said that they have indeed had put an update out recently but knew of no conflicts.

I therefore (with fingers crossed) thought it may just be a conflict with "Rapport", so from "programs" I removed "Rapport", then rebooted, then tried to "fire up" the program again....but it again failed to open or run.Next, I did a "System Restore" that put me back a few days (from the 11th of Nov to the 3rd of Nov).I then once again removed "Rapport" and rebooted. Then (with fingers crossed again) I tried the program once more.Again it failed to open and run.I also tried "firefox"...and this also failed to open and run.Next I removed the program from the computer, rebooted it, then re installed the program...and rebooted. ...but still nothing.

I checked (just in the off chance)that the program had not changed since I last installed it (some 10 month previously) by installing it on the laptop....and it installed just fine, opened and ran as it should. So then I looked looked to investigate futher and ran " sfc/scannow " (as administator), thinking that this would throw up some corrupt files in the system, which would give me a starting point from which to work from........but nothing was found. Everything "appeared" to be clear. By that I mean it came up with no faults at all.I rebooted the computer after this scan (just to add a belt, to the braces, so to speak)....and again, the program will not open or run.So...to recap.I have removed "Rapport", which was the only "update" that had happened.I did a "System Restore" to a date where everything was clear....and everything was running. (and removed Rapport) I removed and reinstalled the program which was (is) affected.

Allow Installed Program To Rename Files Under Program Files (x86)

Jun 18, 2012

I have a program installed under "C:Program Files (x86)CompanyNameSWName". When the program runs it's supposed to copy some files, say FROM "C:Program Files (x86)CompanyNameSWNameDrivers*.abc TO "C:Program Files (x86)CompanyNameSWNameDrivers*.xyz

The program works on every machine it's been installed on, except for one (customer's) Win 7 64-bit machine. On that machine, nothing happens.

It's noteworthy that on that same machine an "insufficient access privileges" (or some such) message pops-up when an administrator trys to copy a folder to "C:Program Files (x86)CompanyNameNewName".

why this particular Windows 7 machine is being so picky? What should I have the installer do so that the application will be able to copy/rename its own files?

Corrupt Files On USB Drive?

Dec 14, 2010

I have a bit of an odd problem, I have an external USB 640gb hard drive (Freecom ToughDrive with Password encryption software removed using Freecom tool), I use it at home (on a new dell Windows 7 64 bit PC) to store all my dataIf I take the drive into the office and plug it into my machine there (Windows XP) I can read all the files, copy them off, no problem, same with my Windows 7 (64 bit) laptop that I have at home as well and on my Mum's (windows 7) laptop. The problem is that if I open a file on any of the non home PC's (a word document or a JPG etc) if I then save changes to the file, when I try to open it on the home machine it either says it is corrupted/unreadable or that in the case of a folder of documents I copied on yesterday in the office - that the folder contents were not accessible.

I have just tried opening a word (2003) doc that I saved on the drive in the office yesterday on my home machine and word shows that it is goobledygook, I have closed the file (without saving or editing on the home machine) unplugged the drive and plugged the drive into my windows 7 laptop and when I view the folder with the word file in, the file has now gone...I have also noticed that when I have created this 'corrupted' file situation, when I then plug the drive into a different machine I get the windows "scan and fix" option. I have done that in the past and it has 'found' all the files that I corrupted on the other machines and stuck them in a $found folder as though there was actual hard drive corruption.Until about 6 months ago I had a Windows XP machine and have been working with an external USB drive for years switching it between many different machines - I thought it was the drive (I originally had a freecom toughdrive 320gb) at first so I replaced that about 2 months ago when I realised what was going on but it hasn't made any difference.

Windows 7 Won't Boot Up - EXE Files Corrupt

Feb 5, 2012

I was getting notification bubbles in W7 about many of my .exe files being corrupt, including chrome.exe and a few other programs. The notifications recommended that I run Chkdsk, so I went to the C: properties and chose Disk Cleanup, or whatever Chkdsk is called in the menu, I forget at the moment. Well, when I did that, I got yet another notification, this time saying that Chkdsk.exe is corrupt, and recommending that I run Chkdsk (lol). Well, I apparently chose to schedule Chkdsk to run on next startup. But after I shut down to let it run I booted up and after my Dell screen I get....nothing.

Just a blinking horizontal bar, looks like that little input cursor flipped on its side, in the top left corner. I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 on a USB flash drive at the moment, what can I do from here? Until this happened I've never used a Linux OS before so I'm not very savvy with it yet, but when I view my partitions on here (500GB HDD) I see that 451GB is Unknown, in a partition manager there is a red flag notification saying that I have bad sectors, which I already knew. I've heard a lot about running a program called ntfsprogs, but I can't find it. Is there any way to recover my Windows 7 boot without losing any of my data on there?
