View 1 Repliesi upgraded from xp to 7.So i am now on windows 7.The first thing i did is download and install Avira,I updated it and did a full system scan.It found around 20-30 viruses, trojans, malware, irc bots in "C:System Volume Information\_restore{5E03FC9B-BBC4-4FA8-96F7-D40CC10DBA4A}RP7" So i let avira delete all the detected files in RP7 folder.I went to the folder and found like icons,.dll files, etc from xp..So i deleted every file in the RP7 folder..Is it safe to delete the folder "System Volume Information" located in my C: driver?
View 4 Replies View RelatedLet start off saying I know what this folder is for (System Restore) and know how to typically get rid of the space it takes up (merely disable system restore). However, in this particular case, it's not working and need to figure out how to make Win 7 delete it.
In this particular situation this is an external hard drive that I hook up to other PCs quite often in transferring data and imaging PCs (I'm a PC tech). As such, the hard drive has accumulated quite a few restore points on it from these various systems. Disabling system restore from mine does not remove these other restore points.
Windows XP I remember would let me remove it if I took ownership of the files, Win 7 will not (although it does not kick back any error messages). So... how do I get rid of it? Or at the very least, the multiple restore points within?
I copied the "system volume information" folder from my C: drive to my external hard drive in order to back up the restore points. Now I want to delete the folder, but no matter what I do, I cannot delete it. I always get an error "an error occurred while applying security information to"..... usually F:MediaID.bin.
I click 'continue', and then try to delete the folder or some files within it, and nothing happens.
I am an administrator I am the owner I have full access
my local disk drive contains a highlighted named program data, i'm i allowed to delete it?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been attempting to delete files from Norton Internet Security, which has been inactive for a long time (we are not going to renew our account) and has been bugging us constantly. I assumed it would be an easy task, and I couldn't have been farther from the truth.I went into the C:Program Files (x86)Norton Internet Security where the data for the program is found, and I couldn't delete the files. A dialogue saying "You need permission to perform this action You require permission from administrators to make changes to this folder".I thought it weird, since I am one of the computer's administrators. Next, I logged on to my dad's profile (at his insistence, though there shouldn't be any difference in the administrator powers of our profiles). The same result followed.Next, I looked online in a Google search and found this site, which told me to use the command prompt to first give me the ownership of the files, then give me complete permissions to the files, and then delete them. All three of these actions failed. The command prompt said "Access denied".

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhile looking for solutions I seemed to come very close to finding someone with my exact problem, but not quite. Here goes:
I had a hard drive with Windows 7 installed. Everything worked, etc. Got a new hard drive, and installed 7 on there as well without making changed to the old hard drive (prompts displayed during new installation saying "old" windows files would be saved). I've been using it for a while now, however I want to use the old hard drive strictly for storage, so I tried to format it to clear the space out. I got the notice "Windows cannot complete format." Went to the forums and looked thru several suggestions, which brought me to try deleting the files individually.
Included in all this were attempts to give myself (the only user on the computer) full control of all files (which was already the case), to take ownership (via right click options AND command prompt "takeown" and "cacls"), to change permissions/ownership via "properties" for the drive/folders, command prompts to remove the "active" status of the old hard drive, as well as removing "boot" status from old drive (while making sure the new drive had "boot" status), tried everything I can think of using Disk Management AND the DiskPart utility, as well as countless other suggestions that I can barely remember. I'm still getting the "You need permission to perform this action." What I don't get is, if I'm THE administrator (and the only user), how do I not have access to this?
I'm sure there are some details I'm leaving out, but I've been at it for hours. Let me know if there's something you need to know. Running Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit, 4GB RAM, 3.2 Ghz AMD Athlon II.
While doing a thorough scan with Malwarebytes I found it slogging through a folder under 'Windows' named 'winsxs'. In it are hundreds of similar files, all beginning "amd64_microsoft. followed by a long string that varies a bit from the previous ones. This is on my HP laptop 64 bit Win 7 machine. Can I delete these files and do do no harm?

Since then I started seeing the green ribbon of death when I was browsing folders on my D. It was always getting worse and worse, until one day I couldn't move/copy/delete any files that was on my D. Then I rebooted and my D drive disappeared?I was able to remove it, 30 minutes in the freezer, then I was able to connect it and save some files (maybe 75% of the files), then can't access it anymore.I bought a new HD from newegg (Seagate Momentus ST9750420AS 750GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive - OEM) and put the new one to replace the one that died.So far so good, but now I see that green ribbon again, but only on my D and only in my "Downloads" folder, the other folders on the D seems to be fine. I can't delete or modify any files in the Download folder.
*Scanned with Superantispyware
*Scanned with AVG2012
*Replaced AVG2012 with AVAST (Had issue with AVG before and I read it could be the cause of the issue)
*Scanned with Avast
*Scanned with SlimDrivers and updated the 15 drivers that were out of date
*Scanned with Emergency Kit (scan never finishes scanning, get stuck at 97% on 3 different files on the D drive so far)
*Checkdisk on both drives (C and D) 3 times (when booting the PC) 4-5 hours each time
*Defraged both disks
*Uninstalled Camtasia + many other softwares that I installed when the issue started (approx.)
*Used CCleaner and cleaned the registry and other files
*Tried to use Xplorer2 instead of windows explorer = same issue
I've recently gotten windows 7, so I am still getting used to it. I have downloaded an old mmo game I used to have on winxp. But I can't install it. When I left click it locks up and says "not responding" and the same happens when I right click it. Which means I can't even delete it.

View 14 Replies View RelatedDue to a NTFS hickup, a folder (1,3TB) ended wrongly up inside the system volume information (win7) folder. Wanted to move it back to it's root, but to no avail...
Tried take ownership, cacls, safe mode, tools etc.
Need to to really move it, because the 2TB disc had no room to do a copy. It's really a FAT/NTFS table issue.
I noticed that there were 2 program files folders. After installing a few programs, I noticed they were all going to X86 folder, so I thought this was an install error on the shipping companies part, and deleted the unnumbered program files folder. View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a virus, which I deleted with Spybot S&D and Eset Nod32 antivirus (it may not have been removed completely). For now the infected PC is not connected to the internet.
I found the virus and started scan by looking into msconfig. I saw two objects:
element: _scott_-{97BAE4-4CF2-5FFC-B9DB 1D 1D324E}
localisation: C:UsersMikakaAppDataRoaming\_scott_css.exe
element: _scott_vrc
localisation: C:Program Files\_scott_svchost.exe
The program files folder is hidden by the virus, you go to C: and it is not there. What can I do about it?? Its not hidden through the standard windows hidden files (I have showing of hidden files enabled, and I still cannot see it).
I tried combofix but it doesn't work for OS higher then XP, how can I restore my Program Files folder??
The Program Files is still there (programs that are installed there are working, and you can find things there through search in start menu, but you cannot see the folder itself).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm new to the forum, just signed up.I have a few questions about installing software on 64-bit.I am running windows 7 ultimate 64-bit and noticed some thing. Some of the software are installed in the program file (x86) folder, some of them in the program files folder by default.I made sure that i found and install 64-bit compliant software.
1. Why are 64-bit apps being installed in the (x86) program files folder when they are in fact 32/64-bit versions?
2. When i get prompted to choose the destination folder, can i manually select the program files folder and will it change or compromise windows?
I have a dual boot machine, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and Kubuntu 9.10. Everybody was getting along just fine.
Today I booted from Windows, no problem; booted Kubuntu, no problem; then later rebooted to Windows. I now get a message that my Program Files (x86) folder is corrupt and unreadable. [While in Kubuntu I did nothing other than look at the list of files using Kubuntu. No file was opened or modified.]
- I tried dropping to a command prompt to run chkdsk (as recommended by the error screen) but cmd is corrupted
- So I booted off the Windows 7 disk and was able to run chkdsk - no problems found (with the /f and later the /r switches)
When Windows 7 opens, all my 32-bit programs are unusable, and I can't explore the Program Files (x86) folder. Properties lists it as 0 bytes. However, when I browse the folder from a Kubuntu boot, everything seems normal and is accessible.
I (gently) used some Kubuntu ntfs tools (such as ntfsfix to flag the volume as dirty so Windows would check/repair the volume on boot) but got nowhere. [I have no idea if this is useful, but I included the ntfsinfo output from both my Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders.]
whats tthis new restriction and how can i get around it....i am on my admin account initially installed with the OS.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently reformatted my hard disk and re-installed Windows 7, and when I try to edit any files in the subdirectories off any on the directories in the C:Program Files directory, I get 'protected' errors. I found that I could not create files or edit files anywhere below these directories. It turns out that everything in the Program Files folder and below is write protected. I tried changing one of the subfolder's properties and marked everything as Not Read-only, but I still couldn't create/edit files there.I was running Windows 7 before the hard disk crapped out, and I was able to modify the au3.propertied file with no problem.I know that Microsoft wants to put all data files in the C:User... directories, but the program I'm trying to change is AutoIt (SciTE), and I don't think here's a way to change the location of the properties files.I Googled in the Windows 7 support site and found a link to a video telling how to work around this. You have to change permissions of the parent folder and all files/folders below it.
