I would like to know how I can set up a default folder in windows 7 when opening up Office workbooks. If I open up Excel 2010, It defaults to to My Documents. However, if I click on a folder "Fixed Assets" to open up a workbook, Excel looks at the latest folder when wanting to open up further files. I want Excel to always default to My Documents
I read somewhere how you can choose the default program to open a folder with, but now I cannot find it again, and I also cannot find how to do this.
I had done it and changed the default file manager, but I want to reverse the change. I can't get to a window or dialog box that lets me change the file types windows displays, or that lets me edit the default program when I click on a folder icon.
Whenever I try to open a pdf file the file opens in Photoshop 7 - the file icon is also Photoshop. HP laptop, Windows 7. Adobe Reader X is installed on my computer. How can I have the files default to Adobe Reader?
I recently ran into an issue where this installation on Windows 7 Pro 32-bit is trying to open up all my programs in Word, they all have the MS word icon as well, so for instance, when I click on Nero, it will try to open it up in word and we get an error because it is not a word file. This is on all Program .exe files. There are no options to change the file association in the default programs in control panel. I have only seen a few fixes for this which involve the registry, I have checked these, however, all registry keys are correct. System restore fails as well, have tried multiple restore points to no avail. We have also ran norton, and malwarebytes on the system is it runs clean.
I have several DVD's with 60,000 files on them. (these come from a vendor) When I try to open them it takes an hour before I can view the files. I think it is because it tries to index the DVD before it opens. If we open it on an XP computer, it just opens.
Recently I've noticed that some '.tmp' files have been created in default 'Downloads' folder of Win7 which is located at 'C:UsersUSERNAMEDownloads'. Here's a pic:
I don't use the default downloads folder for storing my downloads and I have configured all my browsers to save files to another location. But since last month, I noticed these small ".tmp" files being created in default downloads folder. I've been using Win7 Ultimate for almost 3 years now and I've never encountered this before. Or is there any way that I can see what program has created these temp files.
BTW, I use multiple browsers, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and sometimes IE8. I'm pretty sure it's not IE8 and Firefox coz I've been using them for a long time and they've never created temp file in 'Downloads' folder. I've recently installed Chrome and Opera and right now Chrome is my default browser. I went and cleared all my browsers' cache files using their own method withing the browser, but they are still there. Really annoying. I know I just can delete them, but I want to know which program has created them.
I have a 120GB SSD for system etc. I have a 1TB HDD for everything else. How do I change the default program files folders (x86 and regular) so that when I am installing a program the first choice is on this second drive instead of C?
I am using windows7 Home premium and for some reason when I insert a flash card in the slot the menu for which programs to use no longer opens up. I have looked in the default programs set up and they are all set to ask me. I think I have tried about everything I can think of to get the menu back but nothing seems to work.
Having upgraded my desktop PC to Office 2010, I need to import three seperate letter template files for use in Word. These were lost during the upgrade but are on my laptop, which still runs Office 2003, as .dot type files and I also have them copied to a memory stick. However, I am at a loss as to how and where to save them into the new programme on my desktop PC. If it makes a difference, I should add that I do not use Libraries and have disabled them.
This is a on and off thing, but when we open a document on a users personal drive (which nobody else has access too), it opens as read only and they cant make changes/save the file.Selecting "notify" when the document is ready to be edited doesnt respond.Document has no read-only attribute, nor does the folder level they have full access to it.This particular user is connected via wireless but the issue occurs on desktops aswell. We have tried restarting the computer and ending the process. Also closed the document via server but she still receives read only error. The weird thing is, if the document is closed and opened 2-3 times on the 2nd or 3rd time it will be in editing mode.

I now have a new problem, before I managed to open 2007 files by opening Office 2010 and then from inside the application choosing to open a file. The problem I have though is if I just try to open an Office 2007 file then I can't open it, and I can't change the default program to open it. How do you get Office 2010 to open all the Office 2007 files such as word, excel etc?
since I installed SP1 for Office 2010 I have problems with opening some (not all!) older Word documents created with Word 2003 (*.doc). I get a message that Word can't read the document and it is probably corrupt. On a other client (same OS, Office 2010 without SP1) I can open the same document without difficulty.
I am running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. Whenever I try open outlook or anything in office 2010 I receive the following error message: please wait while windows configures microsoft office single image 2010.
I am running windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Whenever I try open outlook or anything in office 2003 I receive the following error message: please wait while windows configures microsoft office single image 2003. The above error message is an identical message sent to this Forum by "drumstik59" but was for Office 2010 instead of Office 2003. This was solved by the reply given by "Irene" which is. paste the following commands one at a time and press ENTER.
i have installed microsot office 2007 but its not opening word doc, before myn was windows vista, now i updated windows 7, i cant open word file after downloading from internet, my resume, etc.
I don't know why this is happening! My Mozilla Firefox (newest version) since yesterday keeps opening up in a default homepage (bankofamerica) and I don't even use Bank of America~! When I go to change it to use it a different default page, it sets it as the different page (or even default) but then when I reopen FireFox, it goes back to the default B of A page.
I ran virus scanner and windows defender and there appears to be no virus or anything wrong with my comp in regards to that..
Is there a way to change the directory that automatically opens when opening explorer? Instead of having libraries come up I want to have my home folder.
Whenever I open Google Chrome, it opens really close to the bottom of the taskbar, and I always have to manually drag it into the center of the screen and maximize it. How can I set it so that automatically opens in the center of the screen?
When I open Explore, it opens at Desktop/Libraries. Since I do 99% of my work in a single folder C:/Work, I want it to open there.(Also similar problem on my Vista 64 machine... opens to Roaming/Windows/Microsoft/StartMenu?
i accidentally switched my default setting for opening all programs to 'windows photo viewer', but the programs are not opening now because of this. what is the default setting of windows for opening all the programs, and how do i restore it to the original settings.?
Whenever I open anything from microsoft office 2003, that can be outlook, that can be a word document, that can be a powerpoint presentation or an excel sheet, my windows 7 taskbar and the computer in general slow down considerably, but expecially the taskbar lags for at least 3 seconds whatever I do (like moving the pointer over several icons so that the aero-thingy shows up takes 5 seconds to pop up the little windows or opening a new explorer window). So when did it all start? At first everything was fine, office 2003 was running fine with w7x64, then I installed the cisco system vpn client (64bit of course) because i need it for university. After that the problem occured and I haven't been able to make it go away since then.
1. I uninstalled the vpn client -> no changes 2. I uninstalled office 2003 and reinstalled -> no changes 3. Office is updated with the latest patch -> no changes 4. I tried to turn of aero (who knows?) -> no changes

Just started using a new workstation with Office 2010 installed by OEM. Everything worked fine for a few days, and then every time i attempt to open a Word file or Excel file i get the MS Office dialog box that states "please wait while windows configures Microsoft Office 2010". The dialog box stays visible for 30-45 seconds and then the program opens and works fine.
Ran a repair, four times, didn't fix it.
All of my research leads me to a solution of uninstalling and re-installing. I'm not buying that if everything worked fine for several days, that a bad install will make the program stop functioning properly.
I also noticed, while visiting help within outlook, that the product was still a trial version and not currently activated. I have entered the activation code numerous times with no luck.
My wife has Windows 7 home premium x64 on her laptop and is using Word 2007. The problem she is having is she will open a word file, change it up, save it, then re-open it later and its the old file not the new one. Where as I can open the edited file on my desktop running the same OS but with Word 2010 and the file that opens for me is the newest version.
My computer has Windows 7 Home Premium Operating System, 32 bit system type and I use Office 2010. Microsoft Office 2010 has an embedded default font "Calibri" which I do not like. I go through the motions of changing the default using the "Options" section in all Programs, i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, OneNote, etc. Most of the time whatever font I set as default in each program it changes back to Calibri after exiting. I changed the normal.dot file to reflect my new font. I even deleted Calibri from the Fonts directory in Windows 7 but it still shows as the default font. How can that be? It was DELETED !!! Is there a way to change the default font once and for all?
This issue was solved in this thread:[URL]...However, I am completely clueless as to how. I found the relevant file but double-clicking it merely opened my libraries folder (again).Step by step, what do I do?
