Set The Default Program To Open Media Files In Windows 7?
Jul 24, 2011
Does anyone know how do I set the default program to open media files in Windows 7On WinXP it was right click -> open with -> checkmark "set as default program for opening this type of file" -> double click program. I did the same thing on Windows 7 and it has absolutely no effect. I do NOT want to play music/movie files with Windows Media Player, yet every time I try to play any music file (.mp3, .wav, etc), it ALWAYS open with Win Media Player, even though I have clearly set the default program to open these files as something else... same thing applies to movies
I have VLC Portable as the default program for opening some video files, like .mp4 and .avi. And I have Foobar (portable) as the default program for .mp3.Usually the icons on .mp4, .avi, .mp3 files get updated with the icons of the assigned media players. But on this PC it's not working. They're still the same icons as if WMP was the default player.Does it have to do with the Standard user account? (Because on other PCs I run from an Admin account and I don't have such problems.)
I wanted to ask if it is possible to set Windows media player to open as the default player inside media center. The reason that I ask this is that I find media center sound is very low quality. I am using it inside windows 7 ultimate X64. I also use Media Browser and have set it to use media player as an external player but it loses some functionality after something is played I have to restart media center and media Browser to play anything again because it will go back to menus but not play anything untill
I can't find a way to have Media Player 12 open in full screen every time I open a video, mp3, wmv or whatever. I don't want to mess with the registry. Is there a setting that I am missing somewhere? System is Windows 7, Home edition 64bit, 12GB ram, Intel i7 6-core 3.2GHz, 2TB hard drive, ATI Radeon HD5570 graphics.
Okay so I am not computer savoy at all! The other day I turned on my computer and all my files have switched to windows media player with the logo on file. Ex. Click on Internet Explorer and Windows Media player comes up. This is in all my files> Is this a bug or virus?
I upgraded to windows 7 through a clean install. I just reinstalled itunes but when it prompts me to change itunes to the default program to use for audio files, I click yes and nothing happens. It prompts me every time I open itunes. I went to control panel -> programs -> default programs -> set default programs and itunes wasn't there. I then went to ->associate a file type or protocol with a program but when I tried to change the default program for .mp3 the following happened:
- I double click .mp3 - I click browse - Secondary Drive -> Itunes -> Itunes.exe - I arrive at the screen that popped up after I double clicked .mp3 and itunes isn't on the list.
I tried going to a random .mp3 file and changing its default program but the same thing happened. I googled what to do and I looked for a software that would change the default program for filetypes and I used both. They didn't work. I tried the following:
a. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. b. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionpoliciesExplorer c. In the right side of the screen double click on "NoFileAssociate". d. Change the value of "NoFileAssociate" from 1 to 0. If the value is not present, create a DWORD value and enter the valaue data as 0. e. Exit Registry Editor and Restart the computer and check.
But I didn't seem to have the nofileassociate part in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionpoliciesExplorer
My father has windows 7 with new computer. all files and programs have ended up 'in' media center and cannot be opened. Card games, excel, word, IE, printer, etc. All icons have which used to be recognizable for the file or program now have microsoft icons. Any attempt to launch from the control panel etc are directed into the media center. Games are in 'extras' ie, exel, word, printer are in 'tasks'. NOTHING will work. If we removed media center im afraid all files and programs will disapear. he says he tried to removed it and the error message said: microsoft cannot perform this function. Ive looked at it and must admit, Im baffled. Media center has absorbed every file and progrfam on his computer
Is it possible to make a link on the desktop, or elsewhere, and when opened, to open it with a specific program rather then the default? Specifically, I use FF as my default browser, but I would like to use IE for a couple specific links. I know I can just open IE but it would be convenient to create an icon/link on the desktop to the location, and when opened, to be opened by IE rather then the default program for that extension (FF).I just realized that I could make another extension, a new one not used by any program, and just make that extension opened by IE by default then rename the link on the desktop, I think that would work, but is there a way to edit the link and tell it specifically what program to use when clicked rather then the default?
I have Windows 7, and I accidentally set my default program for a video game to open with as Windows Explorer... I know, long story. Now, every program and icon is Windows Explorer and I can't figure out how to get everything back to normal.
I recently ran into an issue where this installation on Windows 7 Pro 32-bit is trying to open up all my programs in Word, they all have the MS word icon as well, so for instance, when I click on Nero, it will try to open it up in word and we get an error because it is not a word file. This is on all Program .exe files. There are no options to change the file association in the default programs in control panel. I have only seen a few fixes for this which involve the registry, I have checked these, however, all registry keys are correct. System restore fails as well, have tried multiple restore points to no avail. We have also ran norton, and malwarebytes on the system is it runs clean.
Im having a problem with opening files I use to open with two programs. One is mkv, vob and divx files with homecinema. And snes roms with an emulator. Basically win 7 would let me select the program and it would show up on the list of programs to use. I would select always use and I'm done. But I moved the folders containing the files to a different folder and now my two programs I use will not show up in the open with list. I now have to go to the program itself and search for the files. Its a pain because I could click on the files and get right to them.
I have a 120GB SSD for system etc. I have a 1TB HDD for everything else. How do I change the default program files folders (x86 and regular) so that when I am installing a program the first choice is on this second drive instead of C?
After I most recently restarted my computer, every program or file I try to open prompts me with a window asking for which program I want to use open the file, followed by a list of programs. Normally this would just be an inconvenience, because I can always just search for the same program I'm trying to open, but for some reason the "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box is grayed out. I recently recovered from a virus, so I suspect this may be a side effect
I have a computer with three partitions, the first with 100GB exclusively to Windows 7 (already installed), a partition for applications and another partition for personal files (photos, text, music, movies, etc.). I wonder how to configure the location of "My Documents", so that all users have only their personal files on drive of personal files. In Windows Explorer changed in each of the users the location of the Documents, Music, Video and Pictures.
- After changed the location of the folders above, there is still the same folders in C:users , and there are user settings that are there defined, eg Desktop, in C:Users. Is there any way to move all settings and folders to another drive? - Is there any way to do this operation automatic? for future users I will have to repeat the same operation, how can I indicate that all future users will have their settings and documents specified in this specific drive?
I installed some applications and found that some applications did not demand that the location where it was set to be installed the application, having been installed in C:users and C:Program Files, intended that all applications (except for windows and Office) were installed in drive applications. How do I specify that this is the default drive for installation applications? Keeping the installations of Windows + Office in this drive. Applications installed by the administrator are available for all users or must be given access to other users ? How done? In the drive file, which should contain the users and shared files, meant that each user only gets access their documents and shared. Where and how can make this configuration?
How exactly do you reset the program files open with, as some idiot in my family has decided that they don't know what a zip file is and that they may get somewhere with it by setting all zip files to open in power DVD... yeh. but now im faced with he problem of I can't extract any zip files, so how can I reset it so windows will open them as normal in explorer when I double click them, and let me extract them as normal, preferably without a system restore of any kind.
I can't open any files in any Office or OpenOffice program going through File>Open. I can double-click a file within a folder and it will open fine.
I don't have this issue in any other program that I regularly use. Just anything Office or OpenOffice. Here is an image of what I wind up with if trying to attach an image in Outlook. In Outlook I cannot attach a file to an email or Save an attachment. I can double-click in Outlook to open an attachment.
Anyone run into this type of issue before or any suggestions of where I can even begin to look to resolve?
I was downloading a screen recorder called camstudio and once I downloaded it it asked to choose a programme to open it with, so I chose winrar because most of my other files were opened with this, but then once I chose this all of my icons in the bottom bar were changed to the winrar programme logo, so I thought if I uninstalled the winrar software the problem would be solved, so I did but now all the icons are gone and every time I try and open something it asks me to choose a programme to open it with!
have been setting up all the *.wma files on my music web site to stream as directed by *.wax files. everything was fine in XP Pro...but now I've gone over to Windows 7; & noticed that when I click on one of the *.wma's at my site...it doesn't stream...Windows 7 instead asks me if I want to open or save the file. no matter which option I choose...it treats it as a text file (opening the *.wax in 'Notepad')
We have Windows 7 on one of our office computers. However, I cannot figure out how to get the computer to automatically choose the appropriate program to open files. Every time we get a file in with a new extention, we have to browse and look for the program..
I tried to open a program using the open with option and it changed the icons for every program on my laptop. I changed the desktop (network, my computer etc) icons back to default but can't manage to change the others. If i go into properties for the program and change it that way it doesn't do anything.
When moving or renaming files I frequently get an error messages informing me that "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program". This typically happens with the second or third folder I try to rename or move. Navigating away to another folder and then coming back or closing explorer and reopening it usually helps but on the second rename or move I'm back to square one. I've been reading and searching on the forum and this is what I have tried so far:stop the windows media player network sharing servicepause indexingtemporarily disable antivirus softwareused the system file checker to check integrityall to no avail. This is without a doubt the most annoying "bug" I have run into so far as it makes it virtually impossible to get anything done or organised. Has anyone found a real solution to this problem that does not involve manually unlocking every single folder before working with it (using 3rd party software
my problem is that Windows media centre will not allow me to open any programmes it seems to have taken over as my default, I have tried going in to control panel, programmes, to turn off windows features but as soon as i do up pops windows media centre, I have tried removing windows media centre but cant find it on un-install programmes, most of my desk top programmes have the windows media centre icon on them like it must be that which opens them.
