Moving Virtual Machines To Start Of Disk?

Nov 1, 2012

I have 3 Virtual Machines on my 2TB drive, but it's close to full already and most of them are right at the end of the disk, where the drive is slowest. This doesn't make for an overly enjoyable experience when in use so, if possible, I'd like to move the VMs to the start of the drive in an effort to speed them up somewhat.I've got Auslogics Disk Defrag Professional, which allows for system files to be moved to the start of the drive, but I can't see an option for moving files of my choosing.Getting another drive and copying files across isn't an option either, as I don't have one to hand.

Virtual Machines And Devices / Drivers

Oct 25, 2009

I see a lot of questions on drivers and devices for Virtual machines. (Hyper-V, VMware, "XP mode", Virtual PC, etc)

Its important to understand that the devices the virtual machines see are not the actual hardware in the machine.

That is to say...the virtual machine might know that there is a network card available to use, but it doesn't know that the physical network card is a Broadcom 3c905 (for example). The virtual machine thinks that it is a pre-defined device that is written specifically for use in the virtual machine.

Same goes with other hardware, your Nvidia 9800 GTX would show up in the VM as a totally different piece of hardware. And this virtual piece of hardware does not have the features or power of the 9800 GTX nor does it require its device drivers.

Virtual machines use 2 types of devices. Emulated and Synthetic.

Emulated - Drivers/Devices that require a lot of physical box overhead to process for the virtual machine. Basically there is a lot of translation that the hypervisor (virtual pc, hyper-v, etc) must perform for the virtual device to utilize the physical device. These are the types of devices/drivers you will see used in Virtual PC and MS Virtual Server 2005 and some others.

Synthetic - Virtual Devices/Drivers that are highly optimized to perform very seamlessly with the underlying physical device. Hypervisor intervention/translation is kept minimal and therefore performance is greatly improved. Virtual machines using synthetic drivers are often said to be "enlightened". These are generally seen in bare metal hypervisors like Hyper-V and ESXi.

The important thing to take away from this post is that the actual physical devices in your computer are NOT what the virtual machine sees.

The network traffic from your virtual machine is passing through the physical network card, but the virtual machine will "see" a totally different device than what is actually in the computer. This goes for any device.

Windows 7 Virtual PC: "Cannot Attach The Virtual Hard Disk ..." Error?

Sep 6, 2012

Got a new Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit machine, found that it did not come with virtual PC. Downloaded the critical patch Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu and installed it. Windows Virtual PC shows up in my Start Menu. Good so far. I go through the steps to create a virtual machine and use the option to 'use an existing vhd file' and when I click 'Create' I get the above pop-up message "Cannot attach the virtual hard disk to the virtual machine. Check values and try again". A factual message but completely useless as with all error messages from Microsoft. I have tried the following:1. When I attach that vhd using Disk Management, it mounts in drive E:, I can see the files and browse the dirs in E:. In the Disk Management View, the drive shows up as 127 Gigs but 107 is unallocated space. The physical size of the vhd is only 25 Gigs2. Others in my company were able to create the virtual machine with the same vhd, checked the byte size and timing, so nothing is wrong with the vhd file itself.

3. Tried to create after shutting down all virus protection including the Micorsoft antimalware protection service. No luck4. Tried Vhd resize to resize the vhd to a smaller size (since it showed up in disk management as 127 Gigs, I thought maybe it was that size), but VHDResizer could not open the input file, gave an errors "Can only load fixed or dynamic drives"

Cannot Start Virtual Application, The Application Is Blocked From Running As A Virtual Application

Oct 26, 2011

Our office has an old program that we still need to use when upgrading our PC's to Windows 7. The program will run fine if you start a windows virtual PC and install and run it. However, based on the needs of our office, I need to be able to run Windows XP mode and simply have an icon for our users to click to take them to the application. If I install the program in windows XP mode, and then add a shortcut to the file under all users/start menu, a shortcut is placed in the appropriate place on the windows 7 machine and I can copy that shortcut ot the desktop. The program runs fine until you restart the computer. Once you restart the computer and double click the link on the windows 7 desktop to the program running in windows XP mode, it says:

Cannot start virtual application. The application is blocked from running as a virtual application.

I read some other posts saying to put a new shortcut in the all users/start menu folder. This works, but only until our users restart their computer. The next time the computer is up, the problem happens again. This is not an acceptable solution to have to create a new shortcut for each workstation each time the computer is restarted.

Desktop Will Not Start After Moving?

Jan 15, 2013

I have a desktop computer. It has a phenom x6 1045t, 4 gigs of ram, an hd 6870, and a 530 watt psu, running windows 7. A month ago, it was running perfectly here in my dorm room. I went on winter break and drove it home with me. It was running perfectly there, too. I have just come back to school from winter break and I cannot get it to start properly. Literally NOTHING has changed with the hardware since about 4 months ago, when I first upgraded my video card to the 6870. It is plugged into the same surge protector in the same outlet it was a month ago, when it was last here. Here's what happens when I try to start it: It goes through the initial ASUS booting screen, then onto the starting windows screen. Then, out of nowhere, my monitor says it's "going to sleep," the lights on my keyboard flash, and it restarts the booting cycle. However, if I tell it to boot into safe mode, it starts without any issues. I need some help identifying the problem here. My first thought was a power issue, but again, it worked fine a few days ago, and it was working fine in these outlets before. I was very gentle in the move, so i doubt the PSU was damaged. The fans are all spinning and the LEDs still come on. Hard drive must be fine, otherwise it wouldn't work in safe mode. Ran a memory test, RAM is fine too.

Additional info: Actually, it successfully started yesterday too, in my dorm room. I used it for about half an hour then let it hibernate, and only now am I having issues. Also, the fan on my video card was going crazy, but after I re-seated it, it calmed down. I rechecked all the wiring as well and everything seems fine.

Does Virtual box write to the disk or does it contain it within your host operating system?

I have tried to understand it but can someone pls confirm that what it does is that if your OS is windows7 then what happens is that all virtual OS you add are actually processed and executed by NTFS Windows7?

Reason I ask is b/c linux needs ext2/3/4 to work not NTFS so how can that happen?

Windows XP Virtual Won't Start

Feb 13, 2013

I recently downloaded and installed the necessary files to install the virtual PC on my computer. I'm running Win7 Pro, but needed XP in order to run a software program that is vital to my small business. I was able to accomplish downloading and installing the files in the order suggested. But here is where I am now: The software I'm installing for XP is old and is in 3 parts. You first install disk 1 (main program) then reboot (although it didn't tell me to reboot, that info is in my notes). then you have to install disk 2, followed by a 3rd disk that runs the hardware key. I was able to install disk 1. (or at least I believe it installed). I rebooted and could not locate my program. I went to the Virtual PC and selected WIN XP mode which said it was starting, but about 1/3 of the way thru - it stopped. I tried this several times and got the same results. I'm at a loss. Should I have enabled something somewhere that I neglected to do? I read another post that said enabling virtual computer in the BIOS. I didn't do anything with the BIOS since I'm an not very familiar with WIN7.

Virtual Disk Error On SSD - Cannot Clean

Jul 1, 2012

first time installer of an SSD here! I'm extremely excited to pop this bad boy in mainly for a faster overall boot of my computer. Recently, my friend gave me his Crucial M4 64GB SSD, which I am very thankful for. I plan mainly to put Windows 7 64-bit on it and that will be all. I was reading this guide: (SSD - Install and transfer the Operating System)

Once I opened up the command prompt, I did all the processes stated until I got to, "Clean" for whatever reason, after typing in the command a prompt came up that stated:

"Virtual Disk Service Error: Clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot, system, pagefile, crashdump, or hibernation volume."

So, what I'm asking is there anyway I can bypass or fix this problem so I can continue the process of putting Windows 7 on the SSD? And another question is, would it really be worth buying the $20 program that the guide offers?

Mounting Virtual Disk Triggers UAC?

Jan 2, 2012

I'm running Daemon Tools Lite, and have a conceptual problem. If I create a virtual disk, and then mount an .iso image of an OS on it, and then click on setup.exe to install the virtual OS, Windows 7 triggers a UAC warning.I don't understand why anything happening on the virtual disk would be subject to the host Windows 7's settings. It makes me fear that I'm not actually virtual, though the drive path certainly looked virtual.

Upgrade / Virtual Memory Service Can't Start

Nov 16, 2009

I am trying to upgrade my son's laptop from Vista to Windows 7. My son's computer is a Toshiba Qosmio and I ran the Toshiba Upgrade Tool with no problems. The problem I have now is that the virtual memory service is not starting so when I start the install of windows 7, I get the error "windows could not retrieve information about disks on this computer". I tried to manually start the service and get the error "service failed to start".

If I put it on automatic, it just stays on "starting". Obviously, this is not allowing windows 7 to see my disks. Disk management does not show my disks due to virtual memory service not being able to start. The computer is ready for the upgrade, just can't get passed this problem. I don't want to use the recovery disks if I can help it.
