Stop Windows From Trying To Scan External Drive?
Nov 16, 2010
How can I stop Windows from asking whether I want to scan and fix an external drive, whenever I turn on that external drive. It gives me the choice to scan and fix or continue without scanning. The annoyance is that when I turn on the external drive, I may be doing something else and the notification will pop up or rather pop under all the other programs and windows I may have open and won't see the notification until I click on the taskbar and Windows Explorer is waiting for some response

Whenever I plug in one of my external USB drives, Windows automatically pops up a window asking me if I want to scan it for errors. Where do I change settings so that it does not automatically do this every time.

I've just had a new mother board installed in my tower, now it's a Pent 4 3.4g. I used to have my two external HDD's connected to the old system configuration but now at startup, when it gets to Auto-Detecting External HDD's it takes for ever to do anything. I have to unplug them, then do a reboot and all is fine, but then have to plug them back in again.
I know from reading some post's that it's in the BIOS startup sequence but I'm not quite sure where and what to change in the startup.
In the BIOS Boot Device Priority I have: 1st - Floppy Drive, 2nd - [3M-ST3200800AS], 3rd - [ATAPI CD-ROM], 4th - [Disabbled].

How can I stop Windows 7 from growing all over drive C! It starts out as a nice small install, add a few extras, then a month later 40gb is gone! its mostly growing in the appdata folder and other temp area's its most annoying, I ask this as I am looking at using Windows 7 on my latest CarPC install instead of XP, although I must admit i prefer XP as I was looking at using HORM and have a fast booting system (Hibernate Once Resume Many)(can 7 do that. So, can I set up the system with a drive C, and a drive D, and shuffle the paths/environment variables to make all the annoying stuff grow on D, that way when I back up drive C its not going to keep making my backups get bigger and bigger every week

I have three external drives, and every time I boot now, they show up as "found," as if I'd just put in a USB drive.....meaning I have to close them all each and every time. Not a serious issue, just an annoyance I'd like to avoid. How can I set it so that they are not "found" each time?

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path. The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject. How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

Why do files moved to an external drive not behave the same as those same files in an internal drive? I noticed that if I do anything to a file that is in an external drive, that file can not be saved under the same name (read only). In order to do so one must save it internally and then copy or move it to the external drive. So I did just that--I copied a file from taken from an external drive, saved it in the internal one and then copied it back to the external one. Now if I r-click the propeerties of these 2 same files and then go to the 'Security' tab a difference is immediately apparent: The internal one has -1- System & -2 My-computername (user-PCuser and -3- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators) with all 3 accounts allowing all (full control, read, write, etc..). While the external drive has in Properties; -1- System -2- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators) and -3- Users (user-PCUserrs) with this final 3d one (and different one) with no Allow for "full control, or modify or write. So how does one have all its files in this external drive behave and be equal to all the same files in the internal drive?Since -3- Users (user-PCUserrs) in the external drive is that which is differnt from the internal drive I was wondering if it is OK to delete this Permission or 'attribute' or whatever it is called and create instead one equal to the one in the internal drive -3- Administrators (user-PCAdministrators)? ANd of course doing so in one go and not file after file after file individually?

I am running Windows 7 Pro. Have a external dual dock connected to a estata port. One of the drives assigned letter K often comes up as E and I have to change as application is looking for K. Another disk in this dock works fine. No problems. why this might be happening or anyway to prevent? Seems like when I go to disk management and assign K it should stay that way.

i got a new processor, the o.c software and teh bios filed to set on auto, so i had to do it manually..over and over and over and over again. around 8 am i started to tweak the setting on the o.c software and in my slep deprived state i did something very stupid..i set the o.c software to load the last setting on startup.afterward i hit a setting the crashed the computer, so now i can't boot it, cuase the o.c software is loading those com crashing setting on startup. so i when to use a back up harddrive which was empty, so i am now using teh computer with a fresh hdd. the other hardrive is as it was when i screwed up royal.all ihave to do is load internal harddrive on my external hdd dock, in a virtualized environment which i looked for help threw google, which lead me to virtual box..which was 3 hours of wasted time, then i ran another search which lead me here eventaully, which referred me VMware, so i went to VMware only to find a god awful amount of crap i don't need and getting support from them was a joke, put in a ticket and await..wait..wait..wait, two hours later , i come back here. i had no idea what api from VMware to go and get most of it seems like its meant for servers, and im not running a server.i have a hdd thats good, in a external dock, i can load its internal working threw my computer, but i need it virtaulized in order to uncheck that box in the o.c software so it doesn't load on startup, thats it >.<

My 1.5TB USB( using the EZ-dock adapter) drive is about full, and I'm looking at a 3GB drive to replace it. My system is a Netbook with USB 2.0 as the only external drive interface so that limits my options considerably if I want to keep it to something I can throw into my suitcase easily when travelling.

On Windows 7 Home Premium, I have three external HDD drives as well as the standard internal HDD, where the OS itself is installed. One of the externals is a WD MyBook, which reserves a partition as a system recovery disk for the MyBook. I never access that system recovery partition, which is assigned drive letter F:, and it's been fine for months. Now, suddenly Windows has decided it's a CD drive. When I boot the PC, an autoplay dialog comes up for this F: drive, asking to scan for and launch media files. In software like Power DVD, this F: drive is showing up as a removeable media source for files for Power DVD to play, and there seems to be some general conflict going on that I haven't quite pinned down yet -- for instance, if I'm playing a Blu-ray from my actual optical disk drive, and doing things with files on the G: drive, which is the actual data partition of this WD external HDD, sometimes the Blu-ray disc is suddenly and spontaneously ejected from the Blu-ray drive and the faux-CD drive tries to take over Power DVD and find files for it to play.I'm certain I don't have a virus or other malware. I've been through the system with my virus buster (Avira), with Malwarebytes, and with heavy-duty malware and rootkit detectors like Hitman Pro and TDSSKiller, and found nothing.I tried removing the two partitions of the WD drive completely from my Device Manager, rebooting the PC and letting them reinstall, but Windows just put the F: drive back as a CD drive.

I noticed that Windows 7 takes a bit longer to read my photo & video files specially those in my external hard drive. I have to wait for that green bar on top to completely fill-up before accessing my files. Usually takes about 2-3 minutes for each folder. My other laptop which runs on XP displays the files quickly.

I've got a XP Pro laptop I'm about to decommission but I've got programs I don't want to lose. I know there are programs that claim to be able to bring programs over from one machine to another but the results don't live up to the claims. I was wondering if I could take the hard drive out, place it in an enclosure and boot from it on my new Win7 Home Premium laptop when I want to use my existing XP programs. Alternately, I have my old laptop C drive backed up using Acronis. Could I "restore" it to a new partition on my Win 7 machine. I know that certain things like hardware drivers etc. won't work as it, but if the programs worked, that'd be fine with me. The rest could be worked on as needed.

I recently plugged in a Corsair Voyager USB stick which turned out to be faulty. As part of confirming this (after not being able to access it in Windows) I checked if it was visible in the BIOS which it was but seems to be dead. I removed the Voyager drive but upon the restart Windows failed to load, it gets to the load screen and just as the animation starts it BSODs for 0.5 of a second and then restarts. It does this without fail in safe mode and does the same with the HDD plugged into another PC.Nothing in the Recovery Console fixes the problem, CHKDSK says there are no issues, for some reason Sys Restore isn't functioning in the RC etc etc. I managed to get the stop code:stop: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A98E8,0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)This suggests to me that there is probably an issue with the SATA / chipset drivers and I can only assume that they have somehow been corrupted when Windows was trying to detect the faulty USB stick. I know that SATA drivers can be installed separately on a Win install but surely you can also re-load them or load default drivers in the Recovery Console from either the Windows 7 disk or chipset drivers from another location

When I plug in a USB flash drive, it's creating 2 files: file.db and recent.db These database files will open in notepad. File.db seems to be a list of all files on the flash drive and recent.db is a list of recently accessed files on the drive. If I delete them, it just recreates them. I don't see similar files on my C drive. Also, my work computer running Windows 7 Enterprise does not create them when I insert a USB drive. As a matter of privacy, I'd rather not have lists of my files on the drives.

Windows backup is set up to not allow backups onto the C drive (or whatever drive windows is installed on), which generally makes sense. But I have a C drive with a lot of empty space, and an external hard drive that I need to back up. So... is there any way to get around the default behavior so I can back up FROM the external drive TO the C drive?
